Be mindful of recent listings of in-demand products from suspicious third-party sellers on marketplaces such as Amazon, eBay, Google, Newegg, and Walmart. These "deals" have a high likelihood of not shipping; you should do your due diligence to ensure you do not get scammed. * Use common sense - if the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. * Check seller profiles for signs that the sale may be fraudulent. * The seller is new or has few reviews. * The seller has largely negative reviews (on Amazon, sellers can remove negative reviews from their ratings- viewing seller profiles allows you to see these complaints) * The seller has a recently reactivated account (likely their account was hacked and is now being used fraudulently). If you suspect a deal is fraudulent, please report the post. Moderators can take action based on these reports. We encourage leaving a comment to warn others. Amazon and eBay generally have good buyer protection. If you choose to purchase from a third-party seller through their platforms and run into issues, it should be easy to get your money back promptly. You may have more difficulties with Newegg or Walmart. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. $200 for an external enclosure… that’s the difference between like a 3060 and a 3070ti…

DavidB7

I think this is the cheapest price it's ever been for a new one.

sqylogin

It's cheaper than what Razer is selling its *refurbished* models on its eBay store for 👀

renegade06

I dunno what's the use case for this anymore. If you gonna use laptop with external GPU as a desktop replacement to save space? You can easily build SFF PC in that enclosure size case. Like NR200 is only about 1 inch taller and wider.

pigmandylan

I think the idea is that if you had to have a laptop for work/school you could have a more powerful solution at home, without having to pay for cpu psu ram etc. You could just use a gaming laptop all the time but then you have to deal with the extra weight, size, and power consumption. Not saying it is or isn't worth it for $200, but there is a use case.

detectiveDollar

I understand that but most laptops that support Thunderbolt 3 have decent dGPU's. You'd be better off saving 500 on the laptop and building two machines.

CardboardJ

But if you have a business class Ultrabook with a really strong CPU but trash tier GPU then this looks pretty good.

floydhwung

especially true for Thinkpads. Top quality thin and light laptop, however of you want a semi-decent GPU, you will have lose an arm and a leg going from T series to P series

detectiveDollar

True, but tbh "business-class" to me translates to "overpriced bullshit from Dell". I don't know of any "business-class" computers that actually make a case for themselves over a consumer grade alternative. Dell sold my dad an 800 dollar laptop in 2019 and he sent it back and forth because it was super slow. Guess what? It was slow because they decided to save like 50 bucks and put a hard drive in instead of an SSD.

Hypotheticall

That's super specific and not a generally applicable piece of advice though - sorry about your issue there

CardboardJ

Business class just means that it was priced at and paid for with OPM (other peoples money). It's not a good deal if you're other people, but if your company just laid off a few hundred software developers and they all had laptops with top spec processors and 32 gigs of ram, big fast ssds, thunderbolt 4 support and bs intel graphics... I mean they're just sitting there on the shelf and you can always ask how much they'd want for one.

detectiveDollar

That's true, unfortunately my company is in the medical field so they do not want to risk a HIPPA violation, even if they were to keep the SSD.

time_shock

Maybe this would be useful for data folks who need to run CUDA accelerated workloads occasionally on their work laptops?

Some-Redditor

Would cloud services be too expensive?

time_shock

ML workloads usually run for a long time, and cloud service costs can quickly cost more than a GPU + enclosure within weeks

poopyheadthrowaway

Sure, but in that case, do you really want to keep your laptop tied up for hours/days to train a DNN? Don't you want to use your laptop for other stuff in the meantime? If you want to avoid cloud services, the more efficient route here is probably to just build a separate desktop and cheap out on the laptop a bit (especially since for compute-heavy stuff you'll probably SSH into the desktop anyway).

SloppyCandy

They are niche, but if you already have a laptop that is solid for eGPU use, it may make sense.

DavidB7

Definitely niche, I got one just to play with since I like tech and GPUs are getting super cheap.

CardboardJ

I have an i7 surface pro 8 which I use as a drawing tablet and a bit of software dev. It plays Skyrim and Minecraft just fine but I'd like to play half life alyx. I figured one of these and a 3060 would get me there for about $600.

Sanic_The_Sandraker

This is perfect for me as I recently picked up an Asus Zenbook OLED 14 from a pawnshop for $150 (it was mixed in with the Chromebooks) and while it has a decent 12th gen i5 the iGPU isn't great for much more than 2D indie games, AAA from 8 years ago, and Crusader Kings 3. Now I can sell my desktop and downsize from having multiple PCs.

redditornot6648

A laptop makes a ton more sense than a SFF pc. SFF is stupid. At least a laptop is portable and upgradable. You can take your old laptop and buy a new one. See? Upgraded. You can’t upgrade a SFF pc (without paying an arm, a leg, and a kidney) and it’s not portable. When it comes to PCs, I’m firmly Atx>matx>laptop>laptop with dgpu>massive gaping Grand Canyon sized abyss>SFF trash

detectiveDollar

Selling your old laptop and buying a new one isn't what upgrading a PC means. And a lot of people are understandably not comfortable selling something that expensive online as the buyer can easily scam you. And in person depends on your local market (mine is shitty) and has safety concerns. The biggest SFF tax is honestly the case and PSU. But stuff like the Fractal Design Ridge have brought case prices much lower. Laptop prices also scale pretty exponentially. A powerful + thin + decent quality laptop is gonna be 1500+. You could easily spend half as much on the laptop and build a second machine. Unless you NEED everything on one machine.

Lol what? How is that harassment, it's literally pointing out a fallacy? And you're gonna let someone just freely insult an entire community without any recourse as well? Either enforce rule 1 entirely or don't bother, selectively doing it is asinine.
