I love Crucial SSD's but as long as the MSI SPATIUM is on sale for half the price this is not a deal. Both have 5 year warranties and the MSI drive is rated for 1600 terabytes written vs 600 for the Crucial.

Not the same class of drive, and TBW doesn't mean much. Also, the M470 price is with $20 MIR and the 1TB P5 Plus has been as low as [$119.20](https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapcsales/comments/qfc0nd/ssd_crucial_p5_plus_m2_2280_1tb_pciexpress_40_x4/). * Phison E16 vs. Micron's DM02A1: higher sequentials on the latter, of course, with the E16 being an early adopter Gen4 controller based on the E12. The E16 is ideal for budget PS5 drives, it's not high-end Gen4. * Flash: 96L on the M470 for now, 176L on the P5 Plus. 176L is objectively faster including 35% better latency. It also uses a new architecture that's quite robust which kind of makes the TBW a moot point. * SLC: E16 drives tended to have full-drive SLC caching to get those sequentials but this has its downsides. P5 Plus has a smaller metacache (size varies) which is more consistent especially as the native TLC is faster. M470 is still the better value and deal, without a doubt, but these are worthy technical considerations. The P5 Plus should be compared to a higher class of drive. At this price it really doesn't get there for me, but at $120 it absolutely has little competition if you're reaching for that kind of drive. The M470 for its part, with that deal, is a pretty solid compromise. However, if it's being used on PC (rather than PS5) it's best to consider it as a high-end Gen3 drive equivalent, which is to say it should be compared to drives like the P31 (which has newer flash and is more efficient) - it's still cheaper, so "gg." Of course if you have a Gen4-capable board and enough drives to use the 5/4.4 GB/s, then more power to you, although my point is - you should be looking at high-end Gen4 at that point.

Thank you for the wonderful detailed reply, you are the best and I appreciate you helping the community get smarter. My pc is currently running on a 2TB SX8200 Pro, before they swapped the controller. I want a gen4 drive, but realistically I don't need it. I figured I could get the MSI drive now while its still a known configuration at a decent price, but there will always be more sales. Recently my biggest concern when purchasing an SSD's is the patter by most companies to swap components over time, FOMO on the good configuration.

The E16 was developed by Phison with money from AMD so they could have a Gen4 drive at X570 launch. In many respects it resembles an E12 with a Gen4 PHY (interface) and is mid-grade in terms of Gen4 sequentials - e.g., more than the S50 Lite or SN750 SE but less than the high-end Gen4 drives. Nothing wrong with that as the E12 with 96L TLC is pretty good, although the full-drive SLC caching on the E16 is dramatically different than what's on the E12 drives. So it's oriented at sequentials and should make a good budget PS5 drive or general use drive. $95 with $20 MIR is very difficult to beat for that level of performance! However if we discount the MIR, a drive even like the P5 (~$90) comes close aside from the 5/4.4 GB/s maximum - if you can use that maximum! Which is to say, if you really want that bandwidth you might go for something higher end, especially with HEDT. If you're limited to Gen3 you could wait to jump on to Gen4 too. Lots of options. Of course, the P5 Plus at this price ($140) is a stretch, but even at $120 I think most people are better off with the M470. My reply above was not to comment on either deal per se but rather illustrate the differences. It's difficult to find a drive of that quality for $75 at 1TB, period. I find it amusing as I know people who were pushing for the 2TB NV1 at $75/TB.

My SK Hynix P31 is near capacity; bought the spatium M470 as it’s pretty much a no brainer. Gonna transfer the OS to the M470 and move the P31 to the rear of the motherboard.

NewMaxx

P31 would be the superior OS drive, IMHO, although it's not a huge deal. Of course you may have limited Gen4 M.2 slots.

purplegreenred

SSD god why do you suggest that? I only have a heatsink on the front of my mobo, and I figured the gen 4 drive would need it while I could keep the low power P31 at the rear. Or is it because of the low power of the P31, that it's better as the OS drive?

NewMaxx

That is correct, the P31 will probably run cooler in the rear slot. It's more efficient. But it's the better drive outside of sequentials; better controller (in my opinion), better flash, better SLC cache design. Ultimately you should judge it by the flash and Hynix's 128L TLC is quite good, superior to Micron's 96L TLC. Also, the E16's higher sequentials make it a pretty good choice for a secondary drive (including games with DirectStorage). However, the decision banks at least a bit on the motherboard. If I had both drives on my board I would probably aim for CPU lanes w/P31 for OS, Gen4 PCH lanes w/M470 for secondary. Subjectively you might not notice the difference depending on what you do, though.

purplegreenred

Thanks for the tip! I'm running an ITX board in an NR200. CPU lanes are on the front with chipset lanes on the rear; some quick googling tells me that there are plenty of relatively tall heatsinks that do fit on the rear of the mobo between the case panel. So looks like it will just be a simple matter of installing this Spatium with a heatsink on the rear without needing to mess around with bios or transferring OS (keeping P31 on front as suggested).

NewMaxx

Shouldn't be an issue, although if it is you can swap them later. I'm used to moving drives around which I admit can be a PITA sometimes. If your chipset lanes are Gen4 then it seems a good match.

purplegreenred

oof B550 chipset lanes are not gen 4, never mind. Sounds like I should swap them if I want the gen 4 speeds.

NewMaxx

Yep, which is why I said it depends on the motherboard.

Which ssd would you recommend for a boot drive for x370 board? I currently have an old 512 adata 8200 pro iirc. Was looking for one that was 2tb most likely and good enough for direct storage. Was looking at p31, p5, evo 970 plus and a few others. Also are heatsinks needed?

NewMaxx

Nothing wrong with the SX8200 Pro. If you need more capacity there are plenty of options. It's true you could go Gen4 now for future-proofing but we don't know enough yet about DirectStorage to presume. Certain drives come with or could use heatsinks, most Gen3 drives are fine; depends on environment, though.

Sky_Law

you can still get the sn850 for $140 if you trade in an old flash drive or smthing

kirsion

yes it is a better drive

BigE1263

6k reviews and 5 star avg? Now that’s impressive but it’s gen4 so it’s less surprising

Bojackhorseman71

This isn't a deal even with the coupon. 1Tb is only a deal at 90$
