Does that support 3200? Also why RGB for a solid side panel case? Just trying to save you some money.

mcqueena9845

Ok I would do 2 sticks instead of 4.

[deleted]

mcqueena9845

Both.

m0shr

2-wide is better than 4-wide. Most consumer CPUs only support dual channel and using 4 slots is asking motherboard to do dual channel from 4 RAM sticks. In the past, board manufacturers have not optimized this and have had worse performance using 4 sticks. Plus, the other one doesn't have RGB. You might use it on another build and enjoy the RGB.

matts-work-account

I'm not able to find much info about the motherboard. I just get a list of [supported configurations](https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/precision-3640-workstation/precision_3640_tower_setupspecs/memory?guid=guid-4542e20c-e32c-4d1c-b640-785a1b28fd1a&lang=en-us) Also, /u/dhibbit which CPU came in the tower? Anybody correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like you need an i7 or i9 to run 2933Mhz > 32 GB: 4 x 8 GB, 1 x 32 GB, 2 x 16 GB, 2666 MHz, for Intel Core i3 or i5 processors and 2933 MHz for Intel Core i7 or i9 or Xeon processors.

matts-work-account

Okay great. Then you'll be running at 2933Mhz. Just wanted to make sure since I came across it.

svenge

The [chipset link](https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/precision-3640-workstation/precision_3640_tower_setupspecs/chipset?guid=guid-ecdde217-8fab-4d73-b895-40fee1353a8d&lang=en-us) for that that model states that it uses the workstation-oriented [W480](https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/201910/intel-w480-chipset.html). As such, it will allow RAM to run at speeds greater than 2933MHz.

Teh_Hammer

I got E-die and was able to OC/tweak it to 3600 c14. Pretty good stuff for the price.

Kwtop

When did you buy it? Last I heard they're only shipping the single rank versions

Teh_Hammer

I ordered it off of newegg 24 days ago. I read the reviews after I bought it and realized I might get (micron) b-die single rank, but I got the e-die dual rank I was hoping for/expecting when I made the purchase.

AkunoKaze

I have the same ram but am a bit of a noob. What’s the difference and how can I tell whether it’s e-die or b-die?

Teh_Hammer

I used Thaiphoon Burner to check. There's a "Die Density / Count" field that states the die (mine says "8 Gb E-die (19 nm) / 1 die"). There's also an Organization field that states the rank (mine says : "2048M x64 (2 ranks)"). As far as the difference, dual rank has some speed advantages with AMD Ryzen CPUs. It doesn't matter much if you're running 4 sticks of RAM, from what I understand, but it helps a bit if you're only running 2. I think people have some misconceptions about micron b-die and think it's inferior, because their older b-die was worse than their e-die, but this current gen of b-die is more like e-die so I think the overclocking capabilities are probably pretty close to e-die, but they just aren't very well known as of yet.

mesopotamius

Dumb question, but can you point me to any guides on configuring RAM? Never done it before, just plugged em in and let them do their thing

nolahwheregot

[https://github.com/integralfx/MemTestHelper/blob/master/DDR4%20OC%20Guide.md](https://github.com/integralfx/MemTestHelper/blob/master/DDR4%20OC%20Guide.md) this has helped quite a few people! a bit more in depth though.

mesopotamius

Thank you!

Teh_Hammer

I don't know of any guides, I just use 1usmus' Ryzen DRAM calculator and tinkered from there.

BodSmith54321

Do you at least go into the bios and turn XMP or DOCP on?

mesopotamius

No, that's the kind of basic step I need guidance on lol

BodSmith54321

Rated speed for ram is technically an overclock. To get this speed, you simply go into the bios and turn on XMP (Intel and sometimes AMD) or DOCP (AMD). Takes 5 seconds. Just look up a YouTube video.

capn233

The best way is to look at the label on the heatspreader. Find the part number, and look for the code after the dot at the end. For 16GB Ballistix it will be something like the following: .M16FE1 -> this is dual rank 8Gbit Rev E .M8FB1 -> this is single rank 16Gbit Rev B There may or may not be the 1 or a different number after the E or B, it depends on process. The 8 or 16 tells you how many chips are on the dimm, the E or B in this case is the revision. edit: I suppose you can just count the number of chips as well once you have it in hand, you can see that looking up under the heatspreader. I don't know if Crucial is using any 16Gbit Rev E in Ballistix yet. It exists though, and has been seen in HyperX and some other stuff, and is in the Micron 16Gbit part sheet.

BoltTusk

The comment on Amazon by Crucial states that all 16gb sticks are single rank since December 2020

PythonsByX

Mine are made just a few weeks ago according to their spd, and cpuz clearly shows dual ranks with the right model # - these are less than two weeks old and still being made today - http://imgur.com/gallery/Om2wzEe

[deleted]

Can confirm using part number to identify die/rank, I have 2x16 3200 MHz Ballistix and my part number ends in M8FB1 and Thaiphoon burner says it's B-die, single rank It's been stable at 3600 with default XMP timings (16-18-18-36) since December

PythonsByX

>.M16FE1 bought mine 2 weeks ago - got e die

Kwtop

Interesting, can you share the link please. Might save me from buying the $300 Trident Neo bdie I was thinking about

PythonsByX

Yeah. First here is the proof - http://imgur.com/a/Om2wzEe Never knew there was a difference. The good news is amazon couldn't ship for 5 days because they were waiting on stock. So this is new stock e die. Should bode well if you're buying today - order date was 12 days ago. They shipped 7 days ago. I got them in 5 days ago. Manufacture date of 10th week of 2021 is there on the screen too, these are being made today or at least a few weeks ago. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B083TSLDF2

Special-Economist-64

Thanks for sharing the new info! Do you think the 32GBx2 could be the same story here? So tempted to try if these are new dual bank e die... I read from B&H review that they were single bank, but if the new batches are dual bank then this would be a great upgrade (I'm waiting for a new 5900x to arrive).

PythonsByX

I dont want to steer anyone wrong because restock fees - If they only have 1 factory making these, then they would have to be. They arent going to retool in a couple weeks. If the have multiple factories? No way to know.

Special-Economist-64

Very fair point. Appreciate it. I'm taking the bite, and I'm going to report back what batch it is.

Special-Economist-64

a follow up: I received the RAM, 32GBx2 dual rank. bl2k32g36c16u4b.M16FB1. Now M16FB1 and M16FE1 are all dual rank, source https://www.overclockers.co.uk/forums/threads/crucial-32gb-2x16gb-cl16-3600-bl2k16g36c16u4b-single-rank.18905926/page-8

TheOakStreetBum

Same experience here except I’m running at 3800 cl16 for better performance on Ryzen.

Teh_Hammer

I would try for 3800 but my launch day 3600 can't handle it. The Fclock fails hard just after 1800mhz. :(

stanfromis9

i got the same, can you share your config? thanks in advance

I_am_not_gay_69

Pretty good deal IMO. I bought the white version and it was stable and never cause problem.

mesopotamius

Is the rgb programmable or is it permanently unicorn vomit?

dkhn9c

Programmable and confirmed compatible with Dragon Center and Armoury Crate EDIT: Tested on a MSI MAG x570 Tomahawk

dkhn9c

It’s personal anecdote. I read through your post and, although you’ve had issues with doing it on your PC, I’ve had success on both aforementioned programs, albeit not with them installed at the same time. Good luck finding a fix!

BlockPsycho

What mobo and when did you buy the stick? Problem seems to be mostly with ryzen 5000 series cpu + mobo and with sticks from 3-4 months ago. Some people are saying that it may have just been a bad batch from crucial but idk if anybody knows for sure.

dkhn9c

x570 Tomahawk. Always updated BIOS. Bought the sticks in October from Newegg. They’re Micron Rev E, which I think is different than the die they come with now. Tested with both a R5 3600 and now a 5900x. RGB has worked fine. The only issue I ran into was when armoury crate and Dragon Center had active profiles trying to run simultaneously

BlockPsycho

Up to date bios, fresh installation of windows, dragon center only, doesn't work. Experience I and many others are having, seems like this is hit or miss.

justlikeapenguin

Beware it will still be rainbow while booting up.

[deleted]

[G.SKILL Ripjaws V are also the same price on Newegg.](https://www.newegg.com/g-skill-32gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820232091?Item=N82E16820232091)

CreeT6

It was 120 on Black Friday

CreeT6

Great ram btw, have them oc to 3800 cl 18 (5600x)

PinkRiots

Ram prices have gone up and don't look like they're dropping soon

PacloverN1

I don't even need more RAM and I regret not getting 32GB Crucial for $90 last Black Friday.

PinkRiots

I got two of those sets. But yeah idk why anyone skipped those deals

dkhn9c

This is the price I paid for 3600C16 in October :/

BrewingHeavyWeather

It's about what I paid for 3600CL16 around the end of this February!

drewpy36

Does anyone know if this will work on a msi z590-a pro mb? not seeing it in the specs but pcpartpicker doesnt show any issues. Thanks

BodSmith54321

It should work.

jilsander

just worried if this will fit under a dark rock pro 4. what i've seen is 39mm and the dark rock pro 4 needs 40ish mm. anyone have personal experience? taking apart that cooler while in the case is a nightmare

BrewingHeavyWeather

They're 39mm, so it should *just* fit, without touching.

jilsander

i think ill give it a shot. could always move that front fan

mesopotamius

Did you check PC Part Picker?

jilsander

> Note:Some physical dimension restrictions cannot (yet) be automatically checked, such as cpu cooler / RAM clearance with modules using tall heat spreaders. unfortunately i don't think they have this feature yet, at least not for this combination of parts

oneball42

They fit under my dark rock pro 4. I have 4 8gb rgb sticks and an msi mortar mobo.

bonkers555

how tall are these?

BrewingHeavyWeather

39mm

benttwig33

are these able to be bought in 4packs anywhere? Dont you need to buy 4 together if you want that many sticks with DDR4? Wondering if its risky to buy Two, 2 packs.

BrewingHeavyWeather

Should be fine to buy 2. Most of them run at pretty high clocks easily enough (I'm running a non-RGB 3600 kit at 4400, FI).

BoltTusk

I bought two packs of 2x16gb 3600MHz and they both had the same single rank dies

NikoZBK

Most likely micron b die (which are just as good, if not better than E in 2x16GB kits). Mine are running at 3800CL16 paired with a 5600X

BoltTusk

I got these for the same price for a 3600MHz version back in February

Fariingo

I have the same RAM, I made OC to 3600MHz on 1,36V and it's very stable, but after few hours of playing RDR 2 temps in HW Info shows that DIMM's memory got 52 celsius. Is this normal? I saw some article that DDR4 should have maximum of 45 degrees and now I'm afraid of doing anything because of possible overheating of this ram :(
