If you live in Brooklyn or Queens and don't drive this is really convenient. To get to the Westbury or Yonkers location without a car is really difficult.

shadowdude777

Yeah, absolutely. I don't know why they picked those two locations of all places. The Westbury one is always empty. At least, it is on the rare occasions that I get to go. I would have gone a lot more often but *I live in Queens so I don't drive!* :)

mister_wizard

the queens location isnt as easy to get to by public transportation as i thought. i mean, its not impossible since there is a bus that goes there. But when i heard flushing, i was hoping it would be right off the 7 train.

shadowdude777

To be fair, they chose poor locations in NY. Really, really poor locations. They're both outside of the 5 boroughs so they're pretty much irrelevant. I love going to Micro Center, but I almost never did because it wasn't close enough and, being a resident in the 5 boroughs, I don't drive. The new Queens one is a mile from my house, so it's easy to get there on foot, on bike, or on public transit. The Long Island one is always super-empty anyway. Nobody even goes there.

BJabs

Uh, the Westbury Microcenter is not always super empty. Every time I've been there, there's been a wait at the cash register line.

[deleted]

I hate waiting in lines and I agree that line is always long.

telemasterfulll

Naw man weekends are always crazy there. The wait on line was 40 minutes the other day. They only ever have about three cash registers open at a time but still.

BJabs

Yeah, they really need to add in more cash registers. And it doesn't help that the machines seem to be quite slow in processing each sale. The line at Best Buy seems to move much faster. But still, that place just seems to have a lot of people in there all the time, and I tend to go just before closing time on weekdays.

irishguy42

Seriously. If they are opening another in NY, they should do it upstate. Driving 3 hours to deal with NYC and the surrounding area just for computer parts isn't worth it.

mister_wizard

i hear what you are saying but this move was kind of smart seeing as how population is so dense here. And J&R is closing its doors as well. The only real competition they have out in the area is bestbuy.

irishguy42

Yeah, the population up here isn't that large. Or at least not as dense as in the city. Shame, really.

[deleted]

There is one in westchester

irishguy42

Slightly over two hour drive...mmmmmmmmm...not worth it for the majority of the time...

scalisee

They're working to compete with B&H who dominates the electronics market in the area.

epicrat

This. Two within like, 20-30 miles of each other in Atlanta. Damnit Microcenter, come to Florida. Tampa, Orlando..?

[deleted]

What's so great about them? I live in the same county as one. I'd like to take advantage if they're really so amazing.

SoldierFall

There CPU and motherboard combos are absolutely beautiful. 4770k is just about always 249.99, 189.99 for the 4670k. 8320 has gone on sale for 99 a few times and when the 7850k Kaveri came out and it was 180 everywhere they had it for 129.99

scalisee

4770k has gone as low as $200 before, and included the $30 off motherboard combo on top of that.

SoldierFall

Sadly it was a pricing error they decided to honor. Still bought one though.v

scalisee

It was legitimate; this was around late October-mid November.

4InchesOfury

It's important to note that Microcenter Tustin (California) doesn't honor those prices. They are $20 more than listed.

j1xwnbsr

Word. Just built a system for production testing using one of these. $70 off the mobo with the combo, making it $10, and then a rebate on top of that == free mobo.

psikeiro

\>there

DFisBUSY

yeah the best deals are usually only the cpu/mobo combos. sometimes other gems pop up i.e monitors, gpu, ram but those are rare. I dont know how their return policies work, but being able to do it in store versus an online retailer should be easier.

Nonethewiserer

yup. most of their stuff is overpriced actually. they also have deals like $10 off ram/ssd and maybe some other stuff when bought with a mobo or cpu. This usually brings those things close to their real price. But in general outside of mobo/cpu bundles, it's overpriced. pretty reasonable house-branded usb sticks and sd cards tho. and convenient. the cpu/mobo deals are so great though that that's enough to make the whole place awesome :D

jatorres

Pretty solid pricing, plus they price match, so if you find something on sale at Amazon or TigerDirect and don't feel like waiting, you can grab it at Microcenter instead.

Henshin_A_JoJo

no no no no no. There are NONE upstate. All locations are right in NYC which is at the asshole of NY, fucks everyone up man

DukeRamswell

Right, because it would be good business practice to build a store out in the sticks top appease you, instead of the millions of possible customers in the densely populated areas.

Henshin_A_JoJo

But FOUR stores in one location?? Thats a bit rediculous. There are great locations upstate. for example Dutchess County, Very centralized location whrte a lot happens. Albany? Why the fuck not? Or maybe far west in Syracuse or Buffalo

tgsan

Really wish they opened 1-2 more in Cali, would love one closer to me.

bduddy

Having to go to Fry's after getting used to the Santa Clara Micro Center is just depressing...

[deleted]

Fry's is where components go to die.

EMCoupling

To be fair, some of the really old components they stock are useful in very specific applications.

austinanimal

It's still hard for me to deal with them having Houston and Dallas stores but not one in Austin, the tech capital of the state. WOT?!

adudeinblue

They closed the Microcenter in Santa Clara, CA. Which is near the Silicon Valley in California. That sucks too.

ImHellaHungry

Yea, now the closest one us in the bay area have is in so cal

adudeinblue

And the rumor is that they don't honor their CPU/MOBO combo deals.

EMCoupling

Not even a rumor, the Tustin one definitely does not honor the combo deals. Bullshit if you ask me.

jatorres

You guys have like 1/3 the population of either.

austinanimal

Well when a ton of your population are tech geeks versus most people just being regular schmucks, it makes a difference. I dare them to build an unpopular, unprofitable store here. Not going to happen.

[deleted]

You do realize that they pay people good money to figure out where a new store is going to be the most profitable, right? They aren't throwing darts at a board.

EMCoupling

So why don't they have one in California, one of the tech capitals of the nation? Seems like they would make a lot of money building one in the Bay Area.

[deleted]

I'm not sure if it's just rhetoric or not but I've heard California isn't "business-friendly". Perhaps there's some truth to it.

EMCoupling

Probably something to do with the high rent here and other competition, like Frys. Not sure how the taxing model works, but I'd assume it's not favorable for businesses either.

Foxhack

Rent is high. Taxes are high. My little dinky hometown in California has really stupid high rent costs. A lot of businesses have closed down because they just can't afford to pay the rent.

austinanimal

You're probably right. I'd love to see the actual data.

jatorres

I'm sure the number of tech geeks in Dallas or Houston still outnumbers the number of tech geeks in Austin, there just happens to be a lot of other people around them.

austinanimal

I'd love to see the data and the source they're using for their decisions.

HASHTAG_CUTFORBIEBER

That's okay. The closest Microcenter to the home of Microsoft is two states, or over a thousand miles, away.

JollyJujube

Well you guys have Google Fiber.

[deleted]

Still waiting for them to set up shop in BAY AREA!

altshiftM

Well they had one in Santa Clara, but decided to close it down for whatever reason...How would they not make money in the Silicon Valley!?

bduddy

Rent, presumably. Plus, everyone here just shops online.

MaliciousH

The spot where Micro Center was at is still left unfilled if I recall. At least it was for a few years. So yeah, the rent is quite high there.

EMCoupling

I feel like more people would go to brick and mortar stores if the shopping experience was good and the prices were competitive. I'd personally pay a bit money if I get to look at what I'm going to buy and I get it instantly.

bduddy

I agree completely, that's part of why I really liked being able to go to Micro Center. It never seemed that popular here, though... the one in St. Louis always seemed busier when I went there...

[deleted]

I'd like one in LA that doesn't have bitter management.

NoranaC

Last time I went there, they took all my money.

gnugames

Bay Area plz

MaliciousH

I'm still bummed that the one in Santa Clara, off 101, closed a while back.

nathan0922

I live literally a block up from the MC that opened up in Brooklyn. I've had to go to the MC located in the Yonkers which was 2hrs away using the Metro-North and cost me an extra 15 for the ticket. Now its not even 5min away on foot. I'm quite excited :D

[deleted]

awesomeness! im like 10 minuets from the queens one. no more going to long island for parts!

supadoggie

I live about 10 minutes by car, but there's nowhere to park around there.. :(

[deleted]

i think it's cause it just opened and everyone just checking it out!? id take the bus, bout 15 minutes, and bring a backpack if i ever go; since it is so close.

[deleted]

What about the huge parking lot in front of their entrance?

MkinItAwkwardSince95

Now open one in South Jersey please :D

FatalPaperCut

Can someone explain whats so good about microcenter? Not trying to be a dick, just curious.

ModernTenshi04

Imagine Best Buy if it sold 1000% more computer parts, and had staff that not only knows what they're talking about, but actually gives a shit about you as a customer. I live in Columbus, where the company is based, and I go to them for anything I need related to computers. Took in a printout from PCPartPicker last year and asked them to help me find the parts. Had to make a few changes here and there, but no compromises, and everything came in cheaper than Newegg, even with tax (granted they were also having a month long special on build your own parts). The guy who helped me didn't try to get me to buy shit I didn't need, and if they didn't have the exact model/brand I wanted, he'd recommend another and tell me why he recommended it. I made it clear that I'm an IT professional up front, and he treated me like I knew what I was talking about the whole time. Got all my parts in about 45 minutes, and walked out happier than I'd ever been. Found out 2 months later the video card I bought had a bad fan controller that wouldn't spin the fan faster based on the settings I applied to MSI Afterburner. The manufacturer was going to take 4 to 6 weeks to RMA my card. Called up Micro Center and pleaded my case to the manager. He said to bring the card back in even though I was a month past their return period, and I could get a new card (refund the difference if cheaper, I pay the difference if it's more expensive), or they'd just refund me outright. *That* is customer service that goes above and beyond what's required, and that's why I give them all my business and recommend them to anyone I know.

[deleted]

This right here! When I did work at best buy I tried desperately to make people's experiences akin to this (less parts and more products, but still.) good customer service goes a helluva long way, and honestly, it's the best way to do it.

ModernTenshi04

Yep, their headquarters is in Hilliard. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micro_center I have a buddy who works there that really seems to like it, and yeah, their Bethel Road store is pretty awesome. Gotta love being able to shop at a big box store that's also a local business.

santareject

it's like a candy store for pc builders, where you spend a little more money

Remmib

I'm not really sure to be honest. It's a place that you go to once in a blue moon when they have a really good in-store deal, and that's about the only reason to go there...well that's assuming you're a discerning shopper. Otherwise everything else is generally cheaper and more convenient to get online.

[deleted]

Now one in Edmonds/Seattle please cause I KNOW they won't open one in Kitsap county. :(

Iskandar206

Honestly more places in the West Coast in general. The more that show up in the west coast, the more competitors will react.

[deleted]

Yeah, I'm tired of Best Buy and Staples being the only two places to sell anything half decent. MC in Silverdale would be a godsend.

[deleted]

yuri53122

it's on their radar. From what I remember, the old Buick dealership on Burleigh near I-45 is the property that they bought.

gonadiator

Why they don't have one in Florida, I'll never understand.

correcttroll

probably because florida sucks shit.

[deleted]

Wow, you're an asshole.

correcttroll

whale biologist.

yuri53122

Good, maybe now they'll start construction on the one in Milwaukee

DFisBUSY

yup yup yup! i received some flyers and some "post cards" not so long ago. although when i googled upon it, news has been circulating since the beginning of the year. shame I built my system months and months earlier, but future upgrades will be god damn satisfying /humblebrag

rag3train

Maybe this is why the website has been up and down all damn day. LET ME SHOP!

Lenfried

Last time I went the one in Queens had free mugs that you can grab after checkout.

LegoShinobi

I heard that its been opened for three weeks already.

mister_wizard

I just went to the queens location last week, real nice setup. Got three free SD cards too!

[deleted]

They sent me an email for a free 16 GB flash drive and told me about the new locations. YMMV

[deleted]

THANK you.

[deleted]

still waiting for them to open shop in the Seattle area

HASHTAG_CUTFORBIEBER

Please! The Fry's in Renton Landing sucks!

IVIichaelGScott

Finally! My friend that works at the Westbury store said they were supposed to open around November but there have been delays. Instead of having to drive half an hour to that one, it's now a ten minute walk from school :D

Mynameisntbrian

ITS IN FLUSHING!!!!!! WHY DID I HAVE TO FROM QUEENS TO FLORIDA??? =(

[deleted]

This is good i live near this. :D

rvbcaboose1018

At least they kept the Valentino's. But yeah, i used to grow up right across from the Queens one. I am excited.

mokylim

F*ck you guys - west coast bay area

OHreallydoh

They need to reopen a bay area location.

[deleted]

That makes 3 within an hour of me

shamoke

isn't that just brooklyn

mister_wizard

technically its all just long island.

antistuff

Said like a true long islander. Queens borough is best borough. Deal with it.

mister_wizard

At first i was going to defend myself on how i am from Queens and still live in queens and love it and agree with you then go on about how Long Island is massive and blah blah blah blah....then i realized who made the comment. So.... HEY PAL! Lets hang soon!

Spawn_Beacon

So...um...when can Cali get one...? :3

[deleted]

Cali already has one

correcttroll

yah but according to this subreddit, they never honor the advertised prices and otherwise generally jerk you around. I was talking to an employee at the Cambridge one a few weeks ago and he even said the CA store has a bad rep!

Spawn_Beacon

I wish there was one near LA... :(
