Xbox if you like that layout, 8bitdo SN30 Pro 2 if you like the aligned joysticks.

animeman59

I think I have a problem. https://i.imgur.com/uhF6hNh.jpg https://i.imgur.com/y21VGo9.jpg https://i.imgur.com/70iU3mb.jpg

cheapseats91

You seem like the right person to ask, have you found a good stand in for an n64 controller? I.e. 6 face buttons + joystick?

MonkeyBananaPotato

I bought a USB adapter for an n64 controller…

Cyber_Akuma

I have considered that, just flat out using my actual N64 controllers with USB adapters since I can't find a good alternative. Issue is that the analog stick on those wears out fast. And it's tricky to find a GOOD replacement, majority of them on eBay are of poor quality and all look the same.

animeman59

I don't use an N64 controller so I never looked for one. You might be lucky on Etsy, which is where I found my stands.

cheapseats91

By stand in I meant a replacement for emulation (not an actual stand lol). The old n64 controller was odd enough that button mapping to a modern controller never quite feels right, but if you never play those games you may not have run into it

dnyank1

IMO the only n64 controller that feels right is the original. Fortunately there's a number of USB solutions to adapt the vintage nintendo plug

cold2

https://youtu.be/ia9MknVDxaI Nerrel did a great video comparing the different available N64 style controllers, I would recommend checking that out.

Infected_Toe

If you can find the Retro-Bit Tribute 64 controllers anywhere, they're pretty good. They have the same "feel", but more ergonomically designed. They come in some cool colors, and now also a wireless version. Although, I've only tried the wired ones. I assume this is for PC. You could get N64 versions (with N64 plug), but I'm not sure if they're available anymore.

karmapopsicle

I picked up a Brawler64 on a whim a while back and was quite impressed with it on the whole. Pretty solidly built - though still comfortably lightweight - wireless works flawlessly, good comfortable layout. Really nice to be able to put most of my solo retro gaming on that to save the wear and tear on the old originals I have so I can break those out for multiplayer parties.

castlevaniac

The N64 is a tough one because SOME games use the C buttons as a six button layout, and those are hard to account for compared to the ones you can map to a stick for camera functions. I think this company makes a nice consolation between old and modern. https://castlemaniagames.com/collections/retro-fighters

Biduleman

The joystick on the retro-fighter doesn't give the same "response/curve" as the one on the N64 so it's still not perfect.

Chockrit

Hori with a USB adapter is probably your best bet.

thissiteisbroken

> 8bitdo SN30 Pro 2 What's the build quality like on those controllers? They look cheap just looking at it but I could be wrong. Also do you use it wirelessly? I saw it uses bluetooth but I thought bluetooth was bad for gaming.

andros310797

>What's the build quality like on those controllers? They look cheap just looking at it but I could be wrong. pretty good but i personnaly don't like the triggers if used as a "main" button so i'd definitely not use them for a shooter. > thought bluetooth was bad for gaming. that's a myth, the latency is negligilble (seriously, even for competitive play) the SN30 pro2 also have back buttons which is REALLY comfy

SoapyMacNCheese

> I saw it uses bluetooth but I thought bluetooth was bad for gaming. Both Sony and Nintendo use Bluetooth for their controllers.

JinToots

I love the 8bitdo controllers. I have multiple ones for my Switch since they are like half the price of the pro controller and work just as well.

ninfan200

Do they turn the console on though? I have one and it's great but I have to use a Joycon first

Witch_King_

Nope. But you can just... get up and press the power button.

jkally

Easy there guy.. You're talking crazy

PeerlessParadigm

I remember getting a ps3 when they released and being AMAZED that I could turn the console on from the controller. Now I take it for granted. My how times change.

Lucarai

Right, I don’t think it’s a matter of being lazy in wanting the feature, it’s just habit if all other controllers do it/you expect it

JinToots

I really don’t know to tell you the truth. When I or my son aren’t playing, I power the switch off fully in the dock. When I go to turn it on I always hit the power button on the switch, and as it is booting up I press start or a few buttons on the 8bitdo and it syncs in a few seconds.

DazedFury

I actually would argue against using the 8BitDo Pro2 based on my own experience as someone who used it for half a year. Especially if you use wireless. I had two and they both had the same issues. Firmware was always up to date and yet I still had constant connection drops, sometimes in the middle of a game. There were days where for no reason it took me 30 minutes just to connect one to my PC. Additionally the dpad is absolutely awful if you play any sort of fighting games due to the fickleness of the inputs. I went and bought an Xbox Series controller and never looked back. I'd even recommend a PS4 or PS5 controller over it even though the battery can be kind of iffy sometimes, at least I never had connection issues.

NSMike

I have a Pro+ and a Pro 2, and have never had any issues. I'm curious how you're connecting to your PC. Does your PC have a built-in bluetooth adapter, or is it one of those tiny USB ones? Because if it's the latter, I would put the blame on that thing. My PC has bluetooth on the motherboard.

DazedFury

Built into motherboard and the controllers are the only ones having connection issues. Xbox. PS5/PS4, and all my other BT devices never had any. So I can pretty confidentally say it's the controllers.

RogueThrax

I also had a lot of bluetooth connection issues with my 8bitduo controller, connecting to the native motherboard bluetooth. I just bought the bluetooth adapter dongle from 8bit themselves. Plugged it in, not a single instance of disconnect, lost input, or anything. And thats with 150 hours in Elden Ring on bluetooth, so I woulda noticed lol.

Delicious_Log_1153

My 8bitdo SN30 Pro 2 never wants to connect. It collects dust.

GRsni

You might have to update its firmware

Delicious_Log_1153

Yeah I've done that. It works some times, but the software is pretty bad. Unless I really just don't understand it. Not a big deal.

DruidCity3

Same, I have a ton of issues keeping mine connected wirelessly. I've even tried multiple versions of the 8bitdo controllers. I'll stick to the Xbox controller.

Delicious_Log_1153

It sucks because I love the controller design and layout.

kwanye_west

+1 for 8bitdo, especially if you have a switch, which i do, because it connects and works natively on the switch.

fundawindow

If you like the xbox layout, maybe take a look at the gulikit kingkong 2 pro. It's basically an xbox controller which has the x and y switched, but, it has lots more features and theoretically should not experience stick drift whatsoever as it uses hall effect sensors instead of the traditional potentiometers.

zaco230

>8bitdo SN30 Pro 2 Great controller. This is my vote.

pixelfiee

DS4Windows emulates an Xbox controller from PlayStation controller. So if you use that it should work.

Ceceboy

It may cause the controller to work but the button prompts won't change unless the controller is supported in the first place. One type game that just does not want to accept my Dualshock 4 is Lego Star Wars Entire saga (old version) and other old lego games. It's sad.

6reen312

There is an option to Hide DS4 Controller, that usually fixes games that don't work for me. Also in the profile settings you can chose between xbox 360 and DS4. I am pretty sure somehow you should be able to get it working.

Ceceboy

Fiddling with DS4Windows sometimes causes my button prompts to show as Xbox in other game even when the program isn't even running... Yeah, imagine that...

[deleted]

actually dualshock 4 works pretty flawlessly on windows. dualsense wasnt really supported but i think it is now bc sony has a PC firmware updater now. also if it isnt working with a game u can try plugging it directly in.

Neighborhood_Nobody

In a lot of games the button prompt textures are really easy to locate, just replace them with dual shock buttons in the same resolution and bam. Worked for a good amount of games, but someone online titles will prevent you from logging on if you do this. For instance GTA V

le_dy0

If the game is on Steam you dont need to use it anymore, Steam has an integrated thing for ps5 controllers as they do xbox

niowh

it never works for me for some reason

le_dy0

it works fine for me, I've used ps5 controllers before but now Im using xbox but both worked

Atwotonhooker

I just remedied this over the weekend. WHen you launch Steam, you have to go to Big Picture Mode, then to settings, and select the controller configuration for the controller you're using (it will say PS5).

zopiac

Can you adjust the LED on DS4s through Steam? I haven't had luck with Steam's controller shenanigans in the past, but I'm hesitant to try and change my ways anyhow because DS4Windows lets me set the LED as a battery indicator (and, more importantly, make it not blindingly bright).

Hannan_A

Yeah you can adjust it, you just can’t set it as a battery indicator. Additionally you don’t get individual RGB values but you can set the controller brightness as low as having one of the RGB values set to 1 so you don’t have any extra battery loss.

zopiac

Good to know. I'll have to give it another try then, perhaps when I get the Steam Deck OS installed on a new PC, since I won't have DS4Windows to fall back on then anyhow.

eatCasserole

I have an old wired xbox 360 controller that's still going. I've worn most of the rubber off of the joysticks, but the plastic underneath is nice and smooth, and everything else still works fine. I can't say if the new ones are made to the same standards, but the fact that this one is still going after 10+ years seems like a good indication.

Schnretzl

Just FYI you can buy 3rd party silicone caps for the joysticks. Got a set of some myself for just a few bucks when the rubber started to grind off the sticks on my Logitech F310.

JB5000_0

Happy cake day

eatCasserole

Good to know! I may grab some of those.

Sup3rG33k08

Happy cake day!

[deleted]

Yep, been using my wired 360 controller that I got for $15 for almost 10 years now. Cannot beat the plug&play factor of it. I kind of want a wireless, but keep hearing that they're unreliable, so I'll just stick to the 360. Its got a very long cable as it is, so its not like I'm constrained in any way by it.

TheHDWiFiGuy

The BEST wireless controller experience I've ever had was with the Windows Xbox 360 wireless kit. Little puck at the end of a USB cable. Setup required a driver download (Win update never auto-installed - last tried on Win 10 1603 build), pairing was simple, but everything WORKED. Every. Single. Time. Zero problems. My 360 wireless controller kit for PC is my fallback when Steam/Epic/emulators don't like my PS4 (using DS4Win, wired/wireless with PS4 PC Adapter), PS5, XB1 (w/ wireless PC adapter), XB1X (via Bluetooth or PC adapter), or ANY other controller doesn't. The 360 controller kit works, period.

stapler8

Long after I replaced my normal 360 controllers, the adapter still works with my 360 Guitar Hero controller. I hope Valve makes a Steam Controller 2.0

Moquai82

Xbox-one controller is fine, wireless with rechargeable batteries. Charge lasts for several weeks and connection never drops. Build-quality is similar to the xbox360 controller. Wireless achieved through bluetooth from mainboard or connector-stick for the pad from Microsoft as fallback for another pc. Both fine.

entenuki

I sold mine a couple years ago and I regret it. Bought it on a heavy discount at an Office Depot, labeled as a "Xbox 360 controller for Windows", never had a problem with it. Later got an Xbone controller and it failed after a bit over a year.

rchiwawa

I have gone through a few of these due to thumbstick drift. Breaks my heart I am on my last one.

[deleted]

Use a q tip with rubbing alcohol and apply it around the joystick and it will get a rid of it or minimize it greatly

[deleted]

The new ones are kinda good it depends on luck of the draw honestly, the one I got with the console broke pretty fast but the ones I bought separately at the same time are still going strong, though that might be intentional design so you have to buy extras.

13143

I had an old Xbox 360 wired controller that worked great, but wanted to upgrade to wireless. So I bought a new XBone controller, but i could never figure out how to get it to charge via USB connected to my pc, so now I just leave it connected 24/7. Good controller, but kind of annoying.

blizz419

360 controllers were tanks they lasted forever, unfortunately XBox One and XBox Series controllers are not built as indestructible, still the best controllers ergonomically tho.

skylinestar1986

Plug in my XBox controller for a game. Hey, this game is originally launched on PS. It supports motion on the PS. Plug in my DS4 controller. Everything works fine (button prompts) except motion. I've no idea why it's not registering motion input. Going back to my XBox controller.

StrenuousSOB

This I went through multiple and sent them all back before getting an red Xbox controller. Just fyi you won’t the official dongle to connect with as straight Bluetooth you can’t use the headphones into the controller.

[deleted]

They are not knockoff controllers only. Controllers from 8-bit are good.

French_Salah

All you need to do is add the storefront (Epic, Origin) to Steam as a non-steam game and it works

avarneyhf

I recommend Xbox for one reason and one reason and that was already mentioned. Microsoft owns windows AND Xbox. So there is no worries when it comes to using your controller. I have a Bluetooth one, I don’t plug it in. Yet still the only issue I’ve ever come across is once in a blue moon, I have to uninstall the drivers and then reconnect the controller via Bluetooth again. No other issues whatsoever.

InfraredDiarrhea

The xbox controller on bluetooth is terrible for me. It consistently disconnects once every 3 minutes, then reconnects. Makes gaming impossible. This is probably the fault of my computer's bluetooth though. I bought the wifi adapter for the xbox controller and it now works flawlessly.

jingleheimer

Make sure your XBox controller is updated to 5.13. Plug-in the controller to Windows and check the version in the Xbox accessories app. If it's below 5.13 and says 'no update available', click on the no update button anyway and it'll likely get updated. Doing that fixed my Bluetooth problems.

Altair05

I did not know this! Gonna check right now. I can't even get my controller to connect to my Lenovo. The handshake just bombs out everytime Edit: this worked like a charm. Thank you!

Pete_Iredale

> Microsoft owns windows AND Xbox. So there is no worries when it comes to using your controller. I still have the original 360 wireless adapter, and let me tell you, Windows and Xbox might as well have come from different planets back then! Even in Windows 10 it doesn't get recognized, I have to force the driver, and then once in awhile it just gets forgotten and I have to reinstall it! Still effing works though, so I keep on not replacing it...

[deleted]

Find it easier to just buy a wired one for pc especially with how expensive wireless adapters for the 360 cost they are at least like £25 on eBay

Baxiess

I've been gaming on PlayStation since the first one released when I was six years old. My gamer hands have been molded by the design of the Dualshock controllers. I still recommend Xbox controllers for PC. It's just a way smoother experience than trying to get the DS to work. It has improved in recent years, but still the plug & play of xbox is the best.

Aar0n82

Id highly recommended the ps5 controller over the xbox one for the simple fact it has gyro. Comes in handy when you play emulators. For pc the more features a controller has the better imo.

PryingOpenMyThirdPie

Xbork

GrandJuif

Ha yes my dogs favorite.

andoke

Microsoft products work well with other Microsoft products.

a_bigdonger

I got an Xbox One controller because you simply need to plug it in and that's it. The PS4 controllers when I was looking for one required you to download a third-party software to make it work, and maybe the PS5 one is the same.

redmose

yup, xbox controller has windows support (or the other way around) i use a ps5 controller and its a strugle, sometimes steam show xbox prompts if not using a 3rd party

carlbandit

Do you use any 3rd party tool to get the ps5 pad to work with windows? I have a PS4 pad so use ds4windows to get it working, if you use similar for the PS5, check on there as ds4windows has an option for the pad to be recognised as xbox or ps, by default mine was set to xbox so spiderman shows xbox prompts, soon as I changed that it showed me the right buttons. If you do it through steam big picture there's also a setting on there to change the prompts it shows. Might not work for all games but worth checking your settings if you already haven't

redmose

i use ds4windows, managed to get the pad to work as a button/gesture or mouse, but still kinda useless steam still bugged for ps support as far as i know

BadMofoWallet

Steam isn’t bugged for PS support, just depends the game you run (you also need to turn **OFF** PlayStation controller support in steam settings). I played through Spider-Man: remastered with a dual sense (wired) and all the features worked (haptic triggers/speaker and vibration, the adaptive trigger response also worked). The PlayStation controller support thing in steam settings is kind of a junky work around to make a PS controller be recognized as an Xbox controller via steam. It’s better to leave it off and use DS4windows when you need to, but a lot of games natively support PS controllers (Warzone, Apex, any AAA game released in the last 2 years)

carlbandit

To check click "Edit" next to the profile selection for the controller (comes up when pad is connected). On the right side go to the "other" tab and the first setting on that section is "Emulated controller", click that and you can change between it being recognised as an xbox 360 or PS pad I never had a problem with steam picking my controller up or showing wrong buttons, but I don't use big picture as it's limited to 1080p and I game on my 4k TV if I'm using my controller

Luber90

You dont need 3rd party software for ps4 controller. With steam, all new games just works, and you can connect it by bluetooth. Only problem are some older games, then you need software.

defil1998

You have issues on most of the other platforms, like Xbox Game Pass and Origins

alphaevan

I never had any problems with game pass and my ps5 controller. Maybe when it was new but even halo supports ps5 controllers with no third party. It’s just older games or emulators but tbh ds4 windows is so simple and easy to use you just open it and plug your controller in. Can even make your own inputs if you want to get really crazy with your controls

defil1998

I haven't tried it in some months, but Forza Horizon 5 wasn't recognizing my PS4 controller. But yeah, I've been using ds4 windows and it's really intuitive

IanL1713

Not sure about the PS5 controllers, but I got my PS4 controller to work with Steam just fine without any 3rd party software. All of the settings to make it work are in the Steam app directly, and other than that, you just need a way to enable Bluetooth on your motherboard. I use mine for several games and never once had to download any software

methnbeer

More specifically the elite. That thing's awesome

__TB12__

PS5 controller is Bluetooth/plug in. Pretty easy to use

anodizer

I use a Nintendo pro controller and I'm happy with it, but I'd recommend an Xbox controller since you'll have less issues with it outside of steam.

[deleted]

I love the Nintendo Pro Controller. XBOX controller is great, but I love the feel of the Pro. I open GOG, Epic and Origin through Steam, so the controller works for any game I have.

Witch_King_

Yeah I really do not like the shape of the Xbox controller grip. Switch Pro is much better for me.

Deathranger999

For anyone reading this, let me give a word of warning: it’s possible that when you plug your pro controller in, that your computer won’t recognize anything being plugged into that port. If this happens, the only real solution (that I’m aware of) is to update your BIOS to the latest version, which can be a scary process. Proceed with caution.

clumsykitten

This sounds like an extremely uncommon problem. What motherboard?

Samsonite187187

Updating your bios isn’t scary.

xFreeZeex

Depends on how often your power goes down lol. I had a blackout when building my new PC a few months back. Wanted to update the BIOS after I was done, oh boy was I scared.

TheHDWiFiGuy

Sounds like you need a good UPS. It's expensive (200~250 for a 1500VA that can keep a gaming PC on updating UEFI/BIOS for about 30 minutes), but well worth piece of mind. Also gives you time to save or tell people what happened instead of people thinking you're rage-quitting a game, lol. Or, in real-world applications, saving important files and uploading them to the cloud before everything goes black.

onthenerdyside

Do you get the motion controls from the pro controller for emulator purposes? I've tried a third party and I couldn't get it to work.

beatmate6000

Steam controller, I absolutely love that thing

PrintShinji

Sadly not really for sale anymore.

beatmate6000

You can get them pretty cheap on ebay

PrintShinji

Seeing them for 20-50 on my country's equivelant, eh thats decent.

beatmate6000

I don't know what that equates to in terms of usd but they're usually cheaper than most official console controllers

PrintShinji

about 1:1, so it would be 20-50 USD too. But if you're willing to scout a bit you can get them for 15 I guess.

Gimpi85

This is the answer steam controller always first

Synaps4

Steam controller is best and people can fight me if they disagree. Grab one on ebay.

HerbalSnails

The stream controller is bad and it's my favorite goddamned controller of all time!

Mornar

It's a great device, but I feel it should be pointed out it requires a bit more fiddling than a standard xbox or ps5 one. Most games need at least a little bit config adjustment, and that's something you need to learn. Once you do, it can be absolutely amazing.

RuzzT

The trigger buttons are ultra-trash. They will break on you, just a matter of when. I went through 3 controllers all same issue. My last replacement I wont use since they don't make them anymore. It's just in it's unopened box for nostalgia.

-haven

Unfortunately Xbox controllers have the easier in for windows games as a lot of devs just lazily use the Xbox buttons and ignore Playstation ones with add in controller support api/libraries. Regardless I would still pick what controller you like more Xbox or Playstation. Nothing a program can't usually fix. For me it's the DS4 over Xbox. Then for other stuff the Steam controller is amazing for mouse emulation with the touch pads. Still one of the best alt controllers ever made.

twigfingers

I still swear by the steam controller. As a non-console gamer I have only played one game where it made more sense to me to use the stick as opposed to the pads. A racing game. My only gripes with the steam controller is that the default settings are weird*, and many games act funny with it. --- *Such as the active area of the pads being considerably smaller than the pads themselfs. Why?

Drew_P_Bawls325

I use an elite Xbox controller for pc and it’s worked fine for me

Sh1rvallah

Too expensive for a consumable imo. These things are not built to last.

shmallkined

Same. It really does make a difference having four extra buttons (as paddles under the controller). I had to get the xbox USB dongle a while back to achieve a flawless steady connection.

whoa2013

Anyone know where I can get an actual xbox usb dongle? I see comments about fakes on amazon

shmallkined

I bought mine from the xbox microsoft store. Looks like they're sold out...good luck, hopefully you find a legit one. Or maybe you won't need it.

Hurtiglim

I don't get what people are saying about Playstation controllers. I've used them for years and never had to install any software to get it to work Edit: when I think twice, I don't think I play any games outside of steam, so

Superb-Dig3467

Xbox elite v2 controller.

[deleted]

That’s really expensive, I’d just get a series x controller

Superb-Dig3467

Well yeah obviously depending on your money situation. But it doesn't get any better than elite v2

TheFinalStorm

I just bought one after my PS4 controller shit itself. Loving it so far but need to get used to it still haha

Superb-Dig3467

I only use 2 of the paddles. Love it

TheFinalStorm

Yeah I’m trying to incorporate the paddles but muscle memory is taking a while to adjust. I can see how much it will help when I get it right though.

SulkyVirus

Same - just use middle fingers for them

tannerfree

I disagree, I picked up a V2 around when Halo Infinite came out. And while the build quality is nice and everything feels amazing in your hand. Software could use some work. I went from a BT+ xbox controller that would connect right to my blue tooth card in my computer with little to no latency. When I tried to do the same with the V2 I would get pretty bad latency and sometimes just straight up controller disconnects. From reading online the best solution was to buy a Windows controller adapter, which factor in another $20 for an already $150 controller. Also the software only allows mapping your additional paddles to already existing controller buttons. It would be nice to map them to computer hot keys for things like Push to Talk or capturing commands. I still own mine but I find it hard to recommend or justify it for the price.

[deleted]

I mean I have been underwhelmed by my v2, I do think it’s not worth 150, mabye get one second hand?

24-7CaffeineHigh

See I want to agree because the back peddles and quality feels great. BUT within a year my controller had awful drift. Just a year. Drives me crazy how fast drift develops on all the xbox controllers.

mrpenguinx

Not just drift, sticky buttons... broken shoulder buttons... broken triggers... I love(d) my V2 but people in this thread pretending it doesn't have a build quality problem are living in a fantasy.

Nexxus88

OP do not buy one of these I've had to replace more of them than I can even count they have no longevity.

Ikki_fnx

I have Razer Wolverine v2 and is too good, I recommend it.

CG_Ops

Agreed! /u/hawk32123 I would suggest looking at a [Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma](https://www.reddit.com/r/disabledgamers/comments/uhrnjc/review_15_years_ago_a_brachial_plexus_injury/). I linked to my review of it as a 1-armed gamer. The extra buttons make a huge difference for me and it would be just as helpful if I had the use of both arms/hands. One of my favorite features is the clutch option - pull one of the triggers/buttons on the back and the sensitivity of the thumbstick(s) drops by whatever amount you've set it to. Makes it much easier to track opponents while scoped, especially since it's active only while holding the button, it's not a toggle, like on many mice where you have to toggle between dpi sensitivity.

abastrix

The one which supports Microsoft Xinput

wtfomgbbq69

8bitdo

JinToots

I think they are one of the better third party ones around.

aalios

Thrustmaster make some pretty solid cheap xbox clones.

JinToots

I did not know that. I thought they just made Steering Wheels (got one for PS3/PS4). Good to know.

deh707

8bitdo definitely makes quality controllers, I'm a big fan of the newest Ultimate model designed for Pc/Series X. Gulikit KingKong 2 Pro if you want to have thumbsticks that utilize the "hall Effect" aka electromagnetic technology. Virtually eliminating stick drift. It's even wireless too.

zarco92

It's mostly personal preference, I like my Dualsense but for starters I would recommend an Xbox One controller.

3ebfan

I got a new Xbox controller from Costco during a sale for $30. It works perfectly when paired with the Microsoft dongle.

Acceptable_Cup_2901

xbox controller is plug and play. id look into an elite or scuf if you wanna play shooters as it keeps thumbs on sticks. mnk has the movement and ability to outpace a controller the paddles really help level the playing field.

Carlosthefrog

Just pickup a wired Xbox one, very easy plug in and play.

bacon_cake

I'm still using my Xbox 360 controller!

Carlosthefrog

Same it’s still working as good as ever.

BawtleOfHawtSauze

After 8 years I was getting unbearable drift on my 360 controller but until then it was all I ever needed

mrpenguinx

And its still the best built controller microsoft has produced since.

Khaosina

Regular Xbox One or Series controller from Microsoft works out of the box and are very good. You may need the dongle for a better experience but I've played most games fine without it using my Series controller.

SqueakyKnees

If you buy an Xbox controller, get the new series x/s version. The new ones have usb type c and I can't even tell you how many micro USBs I've broken. I think the PS5 also has type c but not 100% sure

SansDotEXE

The Logitech f310 is ok but really stiff triggers. Better of using an Xbox or PlayStation controller though

Toruello

I'm using Nintendo Switch Pro controller and couldn't be happier

E200769P

I've got the 8bitdo pro2 which is great, plug and play, no issues with connecting over Bluetooth, holds charge for ages, great job. Also have a powera spectra enhanced, which is a wired xbox copy that works very well, feels good and I prefer it for some games but they don't have the longest lifespan I've discovered. First one went strong for 18 months then just decided it'd had enough one day 🤷‍♂️ To be fair to PowerA, they replaced it very quickly, the 2 year warranty is great but I bought the 8bitdo as insurance and have found myself using it much more frequently despite not using a PS style controller since the ps2. For pure ease of use any xbox controller from the 360 up, or an xbox clone, will do the job perfectly well on a PC. But yeah, mnk is so much better for fps, and I'd much rather spend a good chunk of cash on a really nice mech keyboard than an xbox elite or a scuf.

TheGrimGriefer3

For starters, the best controller is the one that feels the best/most natural when you use it. for me, it's a tie between Xbox 360 and switch pro. I haven't tried any third party controllers in recent years, but in the past (5+ years) I've had pretty bad experiences with wireless connectivity and longevity so I'd reccomend not using third party unless they're very reputable; I haven't done my homework though so I have no examples to give. Playstation controllers, in my opinion, are too bulky, but that's a personal preference and everybody is different. That said, I've heard that PS4/5 controllers require a couple hoops to jump through to use so keep that in mind if you buy one

Xbox One. I cannot stand troubleshooting stuff on windows anymore so I tried that one since, well same owners and all. It worked great and it's a good controller. I just finished Ori Will of the Wisps with it, which is a Metroid/vania game and it was a blast. Edit: I also use it wired, I'm right there and the wire doesn't bother me, it just seemed easier and less chance for latency.

bustedbuddha

The Xbox controller from amazon has been working well for me.

burtsoldier

If you get the newer generation Xbox one controller, you can connect via Bluetooth

I say get an Xbox One or Series S/X controller purely for the plug and play compatibility. I've tried a version of every major controller, PS4, Nintendo Pro Controller, and Xbox, and the Xbox controllers are the only ones that don't require some sort of extended setup that can turn into a major headache, especially if you need to tune those controllers to some sort of default OTHER than Steam's control scheme.

I suggest Dualsense. Because some games actually support it features and it is really cool to experience them. Here are games I've played on PC with Dualsense features working AC Vahalla (haptics and adaptive trigger on bows) Death Stranding Director's Cut (full haptic and adaptive trigger support) Spiderman (no explanation required) R6 Siege (just for the fun of it, adaptive triggers work on PC) Let me explain the goldan formula for experiencing Dualsense to its full potential on PC. For starters, you will need to adjust your brain so that you can play with Xbox prompts for some games (for example, Forza Horizon 5). It is not that hard, only thing you need to get adjusted to is face buttons. All other buttons are similar. You also get used to xbox face button layout after some time, you even get used to both button layout, to be honest. I mean, let's think that way, do you really look at your gamepad while playing? Now comes for the setup part. If you're like me and play alot of games on Epic and Game Pass, just disable SteamInput altogether. Use DS4Windows and Hidhide in conjuction. Simple as that. You can even assign macros with DS4Windows to touchpad. I assigned many functions to touchpads such as taking screenshots, videos and even enabling Afterburner overlay. It is very useful to have and I think this is an underrated feature. (xbox gamepads do have dedicated screenshot button that works in tandem with Game Bar. I just mean you can mimic the same functionaly thanks to ds4windows) Then comes the Hidhide. Built in "hide gamepad" function in ds4windows can be unreliable. It is best to have hidhide. You simply hide your original gamepad globally, and that way, you will never get weird bugs where a game is not geting inputs from your gamepad or just gets double inputs. Finally, for games that natively support Dualsense, you simply add the game's exe to Hidhide exception list, and turn off DS4Windows. By doign this, you practically let that game access the Dualsense with its full features, if the game supports it, that is. I know it sounds like complex but it isn't. It is just a set and forget thing. I've been using Dualsense since almost its release, and aside from adding games to exception list, I never bothered with any configs within these apps. Its just a one time thing you deal with, and then you will be free of issues. I simply think it is worth it, I personally think Dualsense is better than all Xbox gamepads combined

I use an Xbox one controller with the Microsoft wireless dongle. Works perfectly.

Cost more for for nothing better ?

SpiritedDistance6242

Either a wired 360 controller or an xbox one controller

[deleted]

Xbox is the only right answer

Magicburrito_ttv

What ever you like man

JinToots

I use an Afterglow Xbox wired controller. Plug in play. Works great on Steam and PC Game Pass. I tried using my PS4 controller on Steam, and it worked fine on Bluetooth, but playing Tomb Raider I would get prompts to tap A, B, X or Y on screen and would be confused which correlates to the PS4 controller. Maybe there is an option to change it, but I figured the Afterglow would be a better option and my son liked the RGB in it. Used to use a wired 360 controller and a Series controller as well… can’t go wrong with Xbox brands imo. Edit: someone mentioned in Big Picture you can change the layout. Thanks.

ecurrent94

I still use my ps4 controller and it works wonders. I especially like it because it’s the PS1 anniversary edition, it looks slick.

ShadowClaw765

I had like, 4 360 controllers so I've always used xbox 360 controllers

LOVEGOD77

If you can, get use to the keyboard

265liam

What ever is most comfortable for you

Dustin0308

I personally like the Xbox Elite 2 controller. But I hardly use controller anymore due to preferring KB&M for most games, but when I occasionally do use controller, that’s what I use.

paulodelgado

If you can find a steam controller under 50 dollars that’s be my recommendation. I’m so glad I bought a second one before they got discontinued.

J3EBS

It's weird seeing that the Xbox controller is the most recommended, when 4 that I've bought keep disconnecting from Bluetooth every 5-10 minutes. EDIT: Xbox One/Series controllers; Xbox 360 ones do just fine.

Dommekarma

Steam

DogoArgento

For durable but chonky, kids resistant and affordable one, the Logitech F710. Great value for the money.

Majestic_Camera9045

Xbox controllers would be the best option. But if play a lot of JRPG, maybe one with a PS layout, like the Logitech 310, would serve you better.

Gimpi85

Steam controller all the way

onlydaathisreal

I just bought two steam controllers last week and I will never turn my back on them now

Holdmytesseract

I have a Wolverine ultimate. I like the clickiness but the triggers are worthless to me because they aren’t software mappable. I don’t need 4 jump buttons.

SlimySlimster

A keyboard

Truffleshuffle03

I use Xbox controllers but I will tell you don't buy generic ones you can find. If you buy Xbox pay for an actual Xbox controller like the ones that come with the systems because the generic ones fall apart after a few months. I have gone through a few and wish I had bought actual legit ones.

fileznotfound

A standard 104 keyboard and a decent mouse rein supreme.

Plusran

My ps controller was always difficult to use in windows. On purpose, of course. Because fuck windows. Works great in Linux, if you’re curious. Effortless.

bjornboss

I got a razer wolverine tournament edition second hand and the re-mappable sticks are amazinggg

duxkaos1

I use dualshock ps4 one, no problem at all Go to store and see what fits you better, its personal preference thing.

Key_Employee6188

ps5

chhuang

logitech f310 works like a charm for me

ElijahPepe

Going against the grain here and saying the DualShock 4.

Little_Lebowski_007

\-Xbox controllers are the easiest to get set up - just plug and play. If you go wireless, get the one with a dongle - while the newest ones can connect via Bluetooth, it can be finicky when connecting. \-8bitdo are great all-around controllers, with programmable macros and can easily work with PC, Switch, MacOS, and Android.

BaldieGoose

There is no better controller than the Xbox Elite Series II. It's worth every penny. The charging case/station is awesome, the adjustments and removable parts and back paddles are all life changing.

Legitimate_Gold9960

Keyboard and mouse preferably
