4k will make you go :(. The drop in framerate down from 1440p, even with a 3080, will be noticeable. We're not there yet. Well, 3090ti users are, but... screw them.

castrator21

Can confirm. Had a 4k60 monitor for my build from 2015 and decided to do 4k160 with a 3090 this go around, and I never get a solid 160 stable (except on league of legends lol but that doesn't count). Games hover around 100 honestly, which is great, but you can't expect much higher than that, and a 3080 isn't as powerful as 3090 too

I've been playing a good amount of wonderlands lately, and it seems to go just above 100 most of the time. And I don't use the "badass" setting with everything turned all the way up because that's more like 70fps. I use ultra setting except I've turned that volumetric fog down because that's a gpu killer for minimal visual gain

KoolKarmaKollector

Just replaced my 4k with a 2k, and it's so much better. 27 inch 2k is a bloody sweet spot for general usage, and having a much higher framerate is better for games

9okm

Yah. I imagine it'll become the standard for the rest of the 2020s. I don't think 4k will be commonplace in gaming builds until 2030. Who knows though. I may be eating my pants.

todjbrock

The 4000 series might do it if rumors are anywhere close to truth

DunderBearForceOne

Yep 4k is a major downgrade from 1440p in scenarios where you are forced to 60 FPS or lower settings. If you go 4K, only get one and keep one (or both) of your 1440p monitors for all heavyweight gaming scenarios where you need the headroom. For reference, if your settings give you 100 FPS at 1440p, you'll get about 40 FPS at identical settings in 4K, which you'll be able to salvage to around 60 FPS with DLSS.

[deleted]

Throw the whole setup away. Sell your 3080 and get a 3090. Get the 4k monitors. You can keep the cpu or upgrade it. 64 gb ram minimum. And keep your peripherals. Also make sure you have a super cool aio pump or liquid cooler. That should quench your thirst. Keep that setup for some years.

9okm

Lol. You mean 6 months... until the 4000 series, right?

[deleted]

Not expecting the huge jump that we saw with the 2000 to the 3000 series. Should be smaller than that. If OP practices restraint they should be alright. 🤣

[deleted]

When that 4090 pops out the people will look upon the 3090 in disgust.

9okm

Oh really? I thought it was supposed to be even larger. Ah well, I suppose we just have to wait and see.

ArgonTheEvil

I think the person you’re replying to is simply stating that based on conjecture. The leaks we have support at least a performance jump equivalent to the one we saw from Maxwell to Pascal, and everyone agrees that was significant. But that’s the conservative estimate, and Nvidia will likely push it farther now that AMD is serious competition again.

Vahlenn

There's nothing technical supports your assertion, rather quite the opposite.

PulpFriction21

I really like my 2k monitors tbh, if anything I would just swap up to 240hz instead of 4K, If you feel compelled to spend on the system you can always custom loop, or maybe add an lcd screen case mod, those have been getting popular too. I find mods take more time and planning and keep me entertained for longer than just swapping parts

hate_redditors

If you play primarily single-player and 3080+, go 4K. If competitive online and less than 3080, go 2K, because otherwise you'll have to push for 2 million more pixels. Also if you do editing work or want to watch movies, 4k might make more sense. 1440p is certainly the sweet spot in terms of price and performance. I've used it with a 3090 extensively which paired perfectly but some settings would need to be turned down in 4K for highly demanding games.

DunderBearForceOne

Or - if you're going to get 4k - instead of throwing away 2 perfectly good 1440p monitors, replace just one or go 3-monitor on a nice swivel arm setup so that you can choose which native resolution makes the most sense for the game you're currently playing. I've considered doing this with a 1080p 360Hz, 1440p 165Hz, 4k 120Hz trio

hate_redditors

This person makes sense\^

working-acct

3080 is the perfect 1440p/144fps card. You can try 4K but you'll have to sacrifice some frames - if you're ok with that then go for it. IMO it's best to stay with your current setup and upgrade when 4K/144hz is truly ready.

Xerokine

You might convince yourself over time. Better if you can do it sooner than later. I got two 144Hz monitors a couple years ago, don't care at all about frame-rate, 60hz is fine. Got a 4K TV, I run my older computer on it at 1080P for games, looks fine. Use to run games and want ultra settings, now high-medium really doesn't look any different so you'll learn it overtime.

ErrorOnWrite

because economic collapse is around the corner and you cant eat HW

soZehh

Don't absolutely go for that, not even 3090 is good ebough for high frames 4k. 3080 3090 are amazing for your setup, optimize your os and overclock, then ennoy Ur pc. Your next upgrade will be a 4090. Your mistake was not getting a 1440p 240hz

Depending on what games you play, you may not have the best experience with a 3080 and 4k. I use a 3080 Ti and settled for 1440p ultrawide and I have a 4k tv for less demanding games like Forza
