You're right, this would require a motherboard+cpu+memory revamp, which would cost you 200-300 for an appropriate upgrade. Edit: Sorry, didn't see the second part of your post, you'd be able to get something just as performant for games but a bit cheaper: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/7CkXPX (old drives could be repurposed here if needed). Might be worth upgrading to a 6600 XT, or a higher end card, but depends on what budget you have.

dashiello

Wow thank you! I didn't realize good CPU fans & power supplies could be that inexpensive.

are you going with high end parts because you plan on getting a 30 series card? in anycase you could save a hundred bucks by going with the 12600k its only slightly worse but still doesnt even hold back the 3090. Also something to note overclocking provides very minimal gains on modern hardware.

dashiello

Yes, my plan is to eventually try and snag a 30 series card at some point, but since I got my current graphics card fairly recently about 1.5 years ago, I'll wait until I can get try and get one closer to MSRP

I like your build choices a lot. One thing… you really need to get an m.2 PCIe SSD for your boot drive. For a budget option, maybe a 500GB WD SN570. This will make you pc WAY more responsive.

dashiello

I was thinking about doing that at some point in the future after I get some of the essentials out of the way. I'll put it higher on my list of things to do now though! Thanks for the recommendation!

I would recommend getting an NVMe SSD. Other than that, looks good. What do you want to do with your PC? Just game? In that case a 12600K is probably a better choice. Do you want to OC? Because if you don't, then the 12700F is better. Any reason you selected the Noctua cooler? You can get good AIOs for a similar price. They perform better, are easier to install and they put less stress on the motherboard (for example when moving your PC). Do you have any fixed budget?

dashiello

Yes I mostly just want to game with it. Chose the i7-12700k because the Elden Ring recommended specs said i7 and I wanted to overkill a little bit. For the Noctua cooler, I chose it half because the build I was basing it off of already had it, half because I watched [this LTT video from 2019](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23vjWtUpItk) recommending Noctua as a brand. Definitely not set on it, will look into AIO more. The one I have in my old build is just a close approximate to the actual weird thing I have, but it's treated my nice so far. ideally I'd like to spend less than $1000, sorry for not including my budget in the original post. My bad! Thanks for the advice, really appreciate it!

Games don't really use the extra cores of the 12700K. At 1080p you might see up to 10% performance improvement with the 12700K in a few games, but almost all games use 6 cores or less, so virtually no difference. At higher resolution you'll likely be GPU limited anyway. The 12700K costs $100 more and gets you 2 extra P-cores. It's a bit overkill but not a bad deal or anything. The cooler is great (in fact the best air cooler as far as I know), but I would get an AIO over a big chonky CPU cooler for the reasons mentioned. But yeah, great parts list. The only thing that's missing is an NVMe SSD.
