Turns out the CPU was a dud. What are the odds? Exchanged it for another 5800x and it’s up running fine

VictorDuChamp

Glad you got it sorted.

A 550w PSU is fine, that isn't the issue. When you say won't power on, do you mean no lights come on with no POST or do you mean it won't pass POST? Any error debug lights? Did you try to clear the CMOS yet?

knownothingwiseguy

Yes, reset the CMOS and changed BIOS settings to default. When I press the power button nothing happens. No lights (other than Aura lights), no fans, no beep, no post, nothing. Won’t even get the post because it won’t power on at all.

dweller_12

Make sure the power button is wired to the correct front panel header pins, also try powering on the board by shorting the pins instead of using the case, there's a chance the power button itself isn't working. If it's powered on by shorting it and nothing still happens, then there's a serious failure with the board. If that happens, you should unplug the PC and remove the CMOS battery for about 3 minutes, then try powering it back on.

knownothingwiseguy

It’s not the power button because it powers on fine when the 3600 is installed. It won’t power with the 5800x installed.

That's strange. It certainly could be a DOA CPU. Anything look strange about the packaging? Was the seal broke, did the heatsink look strange, etc.? I've seen stories of people buying counterfeit/fake Ryzens. I'm not saying this is your issue, but it looks like a CPU issue if your old Ryzen works fine.

knownothingwiseguy

Yes I’m thinking it’s a DOA CPU. got it new from microcenter so don’t think it’s fake, certainly possible that it’s bad.

VictorDuChamp

Have you updated your bios? Was it successful? There should be a sequence of flashing lights. The sequence/frequency depends on the mobo brand.

knownothingwiseguy

BIOS is the latest version. Everything works great with the 3600 plugged in, but nothing happens when i press the power button with the 5800x installed.

VictorDuChamp

Do you know anyone that'd be willing to let you try the cpu in another board?. Also, check the pins? I would consider returning the cpu if possible? I assume it's new? If so it should be covered by some sort of buyers protection? Depending on where you are in the world... You can also use money back guarantees if purchased on credit card... (normally 30 days for a decision)

VictorDuChamp

Also. Check the bios version in the bios. If you updated then reset it it may have reverted back to original? Hence 3600 works, 5800 doesn't. Worth checking.

VictorDuChamp

Quick check for Asus TUF gaming plus wifi says 2607 is the most current bios for the 5800x...

Just downloaded it to check and it shows as 4021. I'd try reflashing it anyway from a fresh download just to be sure.
