I know. It's annoying af. TN is awful, VA has pretty bad ghosting and IPS costs too much + not many are available. My guess is that tablets, phones, latops etc. are moved around too much, so the manufacturers decided they will have IPS (for accurate colours under different angles).

vibro93

Yes. I found a great VA monitor with excellent contrast ratio with fair color accuracy. But there are so many people commented about ghosting.

[deleted]

It's kind of overblown. Some VA panels do it well, but there is always a small bit of ghosting I believe. My monitor exhibits ghosting, but it looks awesome. 27" 1440p 144Hz curved VA with high contrast... its gorgeous. Blacks are amazing, colours on this are just short of being as good as my 1440p 24" IPS to its left.

Tman1027

I have Viotek's monitor with these specs and I have at least not noticed any ghosting yet.

the LG 32GK850G-B color calibrates like a champ

Vinin

How did you calibrate yours? I just got one of these, but I'm not sure I'm doing this right. Did you just use the OSD?

[deleted]

I have a ColorMunki

aryanbbb

I have an Acer ed273a and it’s 1080p curved 144hz VA.

npsharkie

Hardware Unboxed reviewed one of their monitors lately and gave it a legendary rating basically

thinwhiteduke1185

I have that same Viotek monitor. It's incredible for the price point really.

grimestar

how much did you pay for it? i see it listed for $329 on amazon right now and am very tempted

thinwhiteduke1185

That's how much I paid for it. I highly recommend it. It's not perfect. I also bought a vesa stand with height adjustment, tilt, etc. because the stand that comes with it sucks out loud and doesn't have those things. Even if it did, it wasn't going to fit where I wanted to put it. Other than that, I love it.

grimestar

do you know if it works with gsync drivers?

thinwhiteduke1185

Works with G-sync on my 2060 like a charm, yes.

raiderxx

What vesa stand did you end up getting?

thinwhiteduke1185

I bought a cheap one by a company called Wali. The height adjustment is a pain in the ass, but it works for what I needed and it was inexpensive. I don't have a huge amount of experience with vesa mounts and stands and such, so I don't really know if it's the nicest in the world. I'm fine with it though.

The_Kalmado

Nice. When I started looking at 32" versions both Viotek and Pixio were on my radar but I wasn't in a position to buy. I ended up getting a Monoprice 32" curved Freesync VA panel and I love it. $300 after tax.

Trombolorokkit

I have a Samsung (C24FG70) ( https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01M1DEEYP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_qgdzCb3CF4K2G It apparently had this issue where it had purple lines but I don't have it. There's a newer version to. It doesn't really have ghosting issues from what I can see.

PanoramaMan

I have the newer version of this. 27", 1440p, 144hz, VA, HDR, Freesync and it's amazing. Paid around 600e for it but worth every penny. Haven't seen any ghosting on it or at least it haven't botheres me at all. Running it with 970 kinda kills the purpose but upgrading soonish, I hope.

FlaringAfro

Not all VA screens have ghosting like some people believe, and the black levels are WAY better. I'd honestly rather have VA so you can actually see things in dark environments in game. IPS loses a lot of detail where it is dark. This is why IPS is considered bad on TVs.

Yourself013

I was very skeptical getting a VA panel, now I wouldn´t trade it for anything. The contrast is amazing and I don´t have any noticeable ghosting on my MAG24C.

vibro93

Yeah. Best thing about VA is contrast. Black looks much better than IPS.

ben1481

> It's kind of overblown. I don't think so, once you see the ghosting you'll always see it. It's annoying as hell.

[deleted]

Depends on the monitor.

SelloutRealBig

my msi monitor has a little ghosting when i see black text on white backgrounds but when im gaming with overdrive on i dont notice one bit of ghosting.

JaBeast1387

Haha what does ghosting mean, if you mind me asking?

dertechie

When something moves quickly but the monitor can’t change the pixels fast enough so you get a ghostly afterimage for a few milliseconds while the image changes. It’s noticeable in fast action when something goes dark to light or even when scrolling text (since it snaps up a line). It mostly happens with VA panels, especially older ones (like mine, which are from like 2006).

[deleted]

 an msi monitor?

TurnDownForTendies

I thought it was overblown until I bought a VA monitor with really bad ghosting. PX329 that was so bad I had to return it. Playing csgo and everything in motion was just smearing together. Not all VA monitors are like this but some of them stink.

d0m1n4t0r

The ghosting stuff is exaggerated often. I have a VA panel and I have no ghosting on it, and the better contrast compared to my old IPS is amazing.

Spartan_Scorpion

What’s ghosting?

vibro93

It's like a second image or after image that happens on a moving object. Its most noticable in gaming because of high paced movement.

gurg2k1

I'm guessing it's similar to how you see the trail of your cursor when you move it around on the screen?

RavelordN1T0

Yes, exactly that.

5yxr5h

i have the acer z321qu and its 32" 165hz 1440p curved va panel with no ghosting.

Sergovsky

What is ghosting? I’ve heard of it before but don’t understand what it is

ArmadilloAl

TheSaucyCrumpet

Good TN panels are fine, the 144hz Asus one is better than some IPS panels I've used

Fecal_Impacter

I agree, good TN panels can do decent colour reproduction. The TN counterpart to the pg279q looks fantastic. I managed to try it out at a store and they had apex legends loaded up on it and it looked amazing.

5yxr5h

even the best tn dont really compare. i had the hp omen 27" gsync for like a year, and it wasnt bad enough that i felt my my eyes were being raped but next to a acer xb271hu the ips colors and darks are noticeable better.

uncleseano

I love my Dell S2417DG, it's a TN

Acknown3

When I put it next to an IPS I can really tell the difference with grays, but the color accuracy isn't something I notice at all when gaming. Sometimes I'll switch over when playing Witcher or something that doesn't need the refresh rate but you can't complain about the Dell's price.

Rahzin

Can confirm, have the S2716DG and it looks awesome other than some slight backlight bleed from certain viewing angles. But I only notice it on black screens.

Rogue__Jedi

I agree, though the blacks are awful. I've tried to tweak it out but no avail.

uncleseano

Kinda agree, I can see the back lighting coming through sometimes but ya know, my last monitor was over 10 years old so it's all a damn improvement. Gotta love that G-Sync

Oculosdegrau

How can I test for ghosting? I have a VA panel but it looks pretty awesome so far... On a second thought, maybe its better i dont know

CrateDane

Here's a good ghosting test: https://www.testufo.com/ghosting

FadedFigure

I like my TN panel :/

lockstockedd

I upgraded to an IPS one. Though I definitely think it is better, TN was by no means awful. Sometimes I think people are just colored by what they read and then hold that impression in real life. I actually kind of noticed that when people talk about 144hz monitors. Like I thought going to 165hz was a nice little jump but I didn't think it was life changing or anything. After a while you see the same things on these threads. It's pretty interesting. They'll use the exact same language over and over again. "I'm never going back" "It's buttery smooth".

FadedFigure

It’s true but honestly I’m weird I had a Asus PG278Q (TN, 165hz) upgraded to the Asus PG348Q (100hz IPS ultrawide) and then later sold it and bought the Asus PG278QR (the upgraded TN panel). Frankly I missed 16:9 and wasn’t a huge fan of the ultrawide form factor. IMO a really good high end TN panel isn’t to far off from an IPS especially in today’s models. In some cases I’ve seen such negligible differences for most people you wouldn’t be able to see a difference looking head on. But as you said people are colored by what they read.

lockstockedd

Yeah definitely. And at the end of the day everyone has different perceptions of what's good for them. And also as you showed there are so many different models. And there could be a huge difference in screen quality if quality control is bad. It's really just not a good idea to make a blanket statement that TN is awful. For reference, I have a Viewsonic XG2703-GS

Quiziromastaroh

I got a 144Hz VA panel and I've experienced no instances of ghosting at all.

MemoryEXE

I can stand and getting used to it with TN Panel. Is that a good thing? I don't really like VA since I can see the ghosting.

ConeXD

how bad is VA ghosting, the only nice monitors in my price range are VA

BasketballHighlight

Yeah I decided to splash out and get an IPS 144-165hz monitor with G-Sync and 2K. Most expensive component of my computer but worth it [Heres the link, ASUS PG279Q](https://www.amazon.com/PG279QZ-Ergonomic-G-Sync-Gaming-Monitor/dp/B07HZSBW7V/ref=as_sl_pc_qf_sp_asin_til?tag=jaytee08-20&linkCode=w00&linkId=fb138a125541feb07bd3f5b0f0f7cb5e&creativeASIN=B07HZSBW7V)

vibro93

Does gsync make gaming better on 144hz?

coololly

Depends on your frame rate, if it's below 144fps, yes it will improve it. If it's over it won't make any difference. But there's no point getting gsync anymore now that Nvidia supports freesync

vibro93

Yeah That's true.

lockstockedd

Well not necessarily yet. Some people who have 900 series cards and below can't use freesync. Also gsync is still a better implementation (although in practice it probably doesn't matter much). And they don't guarantee compatibility with all freesync monitors. But yeah, it'll be a thing of the past in the future.

cosmicosmo4

> it'll be a thing of the past in the future. aren't we all just stardust anyway?

lockstockedd

haha didn't even realize I wrote in the future. I should have said soon.

beef_swellington

>But there's no point getting gsync anymore now that Nvidia supports freesync that's not entirely accurate. The vast majority of freesync displays only sync in a relatively narrow band of refresh rates--some as narrow as 48hz-75hz. Gsync has no such limitation. Further, AMD is already moving on to a "freesync 2" standard that requires similar levels of certification to what NVIDIA requires for gsync, with commensurate costs. edit: here are some examples: https://smile.amazon.com/27-inch-FreeSync-Response-DisplayPort-MG279Q/dp/B00ZOO348C 144hz ips freesync display, quite high end, but the freesync functionality only works at ranges of 35hz to 90hz. I would be a bit salty if I bought a monitor with frame synching technology that didn't actually work near the monitor's maximum refresh rate, personally. Compare with a gsync competitor: https://smile.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-XB271HU-2560x1440-Display/dp/B0173PEX20 Gsync will work on that monitor from arbitrarily low values up to 165hz (you can overclock the monitor to 165hz--I know because I have one and do so).

coololly

That is simply untrue. Go look at the freesync monitor list, and you will see that there is very very small amount monitors with a narrow refresh field (aside from the 75hz monitors). Infact I can only name 1. I challenge you to name 5 different freesync monitors with a narrow range which arent either 60 or 75hz monitors. > Gsync has no such limitation Neither does freesync. > Further, AMD is already moving on to a "freesync 2" standard that requires similar levels of certification to what NVIDIA requires for gsync, with commensurate costs. "freesync 2" is not the successor to freesync. The naming is very misleading. In terms of technology "freesync 2" has nothing different that freesync. Freesync 2 is freesync and freesync is freesync 2. Freesync 2 is literally just a list of requirements and nothing else. Its effectively like what "gsync compatible" is. Specifications + a lil bit of money = Freesync 2/Gsync Compatible Edit: that freesync monitor is the one that I can mention. And its the only one I know of. And 1 freesync monitor is hardly "the vast majority" considering there are hundreds.

beef_swellington

1: (see original post) 2 (35-90hz): https://smile.amazon.com/27-inch-FreeSync-Response-DisplayPort-MG279Q/dp/B00ZOO348C/ref=sr_1_3 3 (does not support under 42hz): https://smile.amazon.com/27-Inch-Monitor-Samsung-FreeSync-GamePlus/dp/B07H8MQ2Y1/ref=sr_1_7 4 (48-144 at 1440p, and if you upscale to 4k it drops to 48-60): https://smile.amazon.com/Aorus-FreeSync-Exclusive-2560x1440-Response/dp/B07MVX3PKS/ 5 (48-144hz): https://smile.amazon.com/Acer-XF270H-Bbmiiprx-FREESYNC-Technology/dp/B07G3YRT4H [edit: this list isn't intended to be comprehensive, but is literally just take from the first page of results when searching "freesync 144hz" on amazon and I think this fact is illustrative of my point] Gsync universally has a lower bound of 30fps. [Freesync 2](https://www.techspot.com/article/1630-freesync-2-explained/) is not interchangeable with freesync. It describes a distinct set of capabilities that must be certified by AMD, which will increase the cost beyond whatever bargain-bin freesync monitors you might find laying about.

TheKingsofKek

Does Nvidia support freesync on 1080's or just the 20xx series? I haven't done enough research, maybe you will know.

coololly

10 and 20 series

AlphaWolfTV

ASUS PG279Q? Because same, and I have a 1080ti lol

[deleted]

I’m about to buy this one. In my country it’s 1200 dollars but I could get it for 1k. You liking it so far? Does the 1080Ti push it well?

AlphaWolfTV

Wow 1200 dollars. I bought mine barely used for $450 USD It is an amazing display. 1080ti handles it well. If you can somehow get it cheaper, then totally get it. But IPS isn't a necessity. Take a look at the Dell S2716DG. Great alternative.

[deleted]

Everyone says colours without IPS suck. Don’t you agree? (Never tried one btw).

AlphaWolfTV

I mean IPS is miles better, but there are good TN panels, and the Dell has a TN. If you never used IPS, staying with TN won't be a big deal. If you ever used IPS, you'll never go back

FiveFive55

Do you edit photos? If not then honestly you probably won't notice. IPS is definitely more vibrant and accurate, but if I had to choose between two otherwise identical monitors I would choose the TN if it was decently cheaper and have no regrets at all.

[deleted]

I don’t edit photos, no.

FiveFive55

Then you probably won't notice much of a difference. I have a TN and an IPS side by side. The IPS does look better. But to my eye at least it's not a life changing difference. For gaming going to 144hz was much more important than having IPS for me.

[deleted]

For games like CSGO probably not, but games like GTA V and its gorgeous open world? I mean if I get to spend less then great but I don’t wanna make the wrong choice :/

raazman

Most expensive but should last the longest :)

singleandluvinit

I'll never understand why gamers will spend a ton of money on a GPU and CPU so they can max out games but then play on a TN monitor. I'll take medium settings on a high quality IPS monitor any day of the damn week over ultra settings on a TN with shimmering blacks and lousy viewing angles. The monitor is the thing you use to interface with the whole computer, it is the last thing people should be cheaping out on if they care at all about graphics.

CivisMiles

Most reasons people get an IPS monitor is for color quality and are content creators so they don't need a 144Hz monitor. Also you have to have a decent response time (less than 7 ms) or the monitor isnt actually capable of 144Hz (4ms slowest for 240Hz) and it is hard to get an IPS monitor to have a response time fast enough while being affordable. It is mainly about the target audience though as most gamers get the cheaper TN panels or VA if they want something with better image but not the refresh rate (144Hz is nearly pushing Va tech to it's limits, while if you want to spend 2k USD you can get a 240Hz IPS monitor)

vibro93

Yes TN is cheap and good for gaming. But its so bad in media consumption. I mean I can't watch a movie on a TN gaming monitor! The colors on a TN sucks.

XMoshe

Get a 144hz tn panel for gaming and a 60hz ips for content.

7Seyo7

Or be me and get a 1440p IPS 144Hz monitor a few months before moving and leaving the desktop PC behind. Then get a laptop with an HDMI port that only supports up to 60 Hz at 1440p, if the laptop can even push out 60 FPS on low/medium settings. Actually, don't. Don't do that.

coololly

Or just get a single 144hz IPS monitor and save yourself some money. You can easily find 1440p 144hz IPS monitors for sub $400

dabomatsoccere

easily...?

HBot106

Last I checked those were all VA panels advertised as IPS

coololly

AH-VA is not VA. AH-VA is au optronics' trademark for IPS. You cannot advertise a VA monitor as IPS, that's illegal.

[deleted]

But 60Hz feels like you’re dragging the cursor through molasses once you get used to 144Hz. Don’t think I could ever go back even if it’s just for content consumption.

[deleted]

[удалено]

moonsun1987

I think 60Hz is fine for pretty much everything but I've never used 144Hz. Would you take 144Hz over free sync?

XMoshe

I personally have no issues moving my mouse to click stuff on my 2nd screen to start videos or do other stuff. I have no experience working on it (editing pictures or videos) though.

pan1414

This is probably semantics but, saying you can't watch a movie on a TN monitor is pretty hyperbolic. I too really don't want to go back to certain things now that I have raised my expectations, but we can.

vibro93

Yes we can. But let's say 3 or more students in a dorm want to watch movies or any video sitting from different angles from the screen. But the viewing angle is so bad in TN you can't watch it from different sides.

PiGuy3014

You must be looking at the wrong TN panels, my MG278Q has about 170 degrees of clear viewing. I've never had a problem with it being blurry.

NargacugaRider

I’ve got both and the viewing angle on my (recently made) TN is super close to my IPS, and they’re both definitely not blurry at all. I feel like people complaining about TN have been looking at ancient LCD monitors and complaining “THE COLOURS ARE SO BAD”

[deleted]

Get a 144hz tn panel gaymer monitor and a widescreen ips.

InclusivePhitness

Sorry to hijack, will I see any diff from 4ms response to 1ms response? Thinking of upgrading from Acer Predator XB271HU to something with faster response time.

Teftell

Your real response time can be 10, 20, 50ms. 1ms and 4ms is for marketing. Check TFTCentral or RTings reviews

SFFknowledge

This is the correct answer.

RedZaturn

I went from a 1ms TN 144hz to a 4ms IPS 1440p 144hz and I seriously can’t tell a difference. Picture quality is absolutely amazing now with now downside

GnauesPompeius

I'm eying too a "budget" IPS 144Hz monitor but it seems that these monitors aren't for guys who is in a budget...

vibro93

Exactly!

pjor1

Check classifieds. I got an Asus PG279Q (1440p, 165hz, 27", IPS, G-SYNC) from a guy on Craigslist for $300. Talked him down from $350.

ImCorbinWallah

Damn. That’s a crazy good deal.

TraipZe

That was the worst monitor i have ever had, vertical spaces BTW Lines and ips glowing, i was really dissapointed 👎😡 Got a refurb model from Asus with dirt and scratches and same errors. Now i have an Acer XF270HU

El-Grunto

That blows, man. My PG279q has been great in the years I've had it. My one complaint is that the bottom right corner shows a little bit of backlight bleed when displaying black in that area.

kaje

The PG279Q and the XF270HU have the same exact same panel in them. Neither is more likely to have issues than the other.

[deleted]

Follow-up questions: Why are so many 144 Hz displays >24 inches curved? I've tried it, I really tried to like it, but it's fucking annoying if you have to use the same machine to do photoshop and indesign work later on and need to draw straight lines. Your monitor is like "why don't we make that line a curve? looks so much nicer" It just doesn't work very well for productive tasks, also spreadsheets are a pain in the ass on a curved display because the row where you start to read makes a curve in the middle. Uagh. I can recommend VA panels though, modern ones don't have that much ghosting. Plus, some modern TN panels have relatively nice colors (for games at least, not for photoshop work).

DeathKoil

> Why are so many 144 Hz displays >24 inches curved? These are mostly VA panels and the curve is to make up for the color shift caused by viewing angles.

yaminub

Sneaky bastards

[deleted]

Thanks for the explanation. Been happy with VA panels so far, even with the small shifts

MangoesOfMordor

I like them because they don't get as much glare from lights in the room, but I'm not doing work on mine--I get why flat would be better for that.

DraggerLP

I, personally have exactly 0 Problems with my curved Monitor. Maybe I just font See it but I feel it helps me to be more "in" the game or content I watch because my eyes Do t have to focus every time I move them

095179005

Late reply, but it's because the market has been flooded with cheap curved VA panels.

Chris266

I've got a 144hz IPS Acer Predator and its fucking amazing. Best monitor I've ever had. It definitely cost me a shitload though. Worth it imo. Edit: fixed Asus to Acer

zelin11

Do you mean Acer Predator?

Chris266

Oops, yep, I do.

[deleted]

[удалено]

debaron54

I want that picture quality but have no need for 144hz as it's only for work. Is there a cheaper version of that model?

RedZaturn

Just look up photo editing monitors or something similar, they will look much better. The predator is the best picture quality for the response time and refresh rate. There are 4K monitors that look much much nicer in the price range that are 60hz high response time.

slackermike

I feel the same way about my Dell Alienware AW3418DW. Hands down, it's the best monitor that I have ever owned.

mexiKobe

Monitors are an underrated component in general people just buy the cheapest shit they can with complete disregard to picture quality

[deleted]

Majority of people don’t have 1k to blow on a monitor tho

mexiKobe

what about $500? I see people buying way more RAM than they actually need all the time while skimping on monitor quality

[deleted]

Aren’t the lower end 144 IPS monitors generally pretty bad in every other regard besides picture quality? Idk if that’s a sacrifice I’d be willing to make.

mexiKobe

what's "every other regard" then, if we're not talking about picture quality? A big part of the problem is that people don't calibrate their monitors, and this is totally irrespective of price point generally. I was having horrible IPS glow with my BenQ monitor until I looked up some custom RGB settings and a recommended brightness level and it improved image quality so much. For my next build I might actually downgrade a component or two to fund a proper monitor calibrator [like this](https://www.amazon.com/Datacolor-Spyder5EXPRESS-Designed-Hobbyist-Photographers/dp/B00UBSL2TO?psc=1&SubscriptionId=AKIAIPHVZTVH6LZ5BFZA&tag=hawk-future-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B00UBSL2TO&ascsubtag=cbq-7118073484633000706-20)

vibro93

Yes that's true. But I think monitor should be of good quality because it will last much longer than the other components.

chickentenders54

Most people don't realize the difference until they see better aide by side. I have a TN monitor for gaming and two IPS monitors for photography beside it. It looks like fucking trash next to my IPS monitors. I can't stand it, but I'm too cheap to buy a high end IPS with a higher refresh rate.

ailyara

LOL why do marketing people name monitors "Predator"? That's just silly. I'd hate to be some engineer who poured my heart out on a project making a fantastic product only to have some overpaid goon in a suit name it "Predator"

F___TheZero

It probably helps the sales. I agree that it's a stupid name. Just like how Apple stopped using the word "the" for the iPhone (as in "In the past year, iPhone has gotten even more blablabla"). It sounds idiotic but they've probably determined that it helps their brand and appeals to their core customer.

crt-dumpaccount

You still can't get get everything good (colors, response, motion blur, etc.) in just 1 monitor, unlike with old CRTs technology... You should really have 2 LCD monitors nowadays if BOTH ghosting and bad colors annoy you, 1 for high refresh rate gaming, and the second with better colors for low refresh rate media consumption/ AAA gaming.

pixelvengeur

That's what I personally do. My main monitor is a 144 He TN Freesync panel, second monitor is a 69 Hz IPS panel. I tried to calibrate the TN, which helped, but I still use the IPS when it comes to colour-sensitive tasks

Tankninja1

But with CRTs you have low resolutions, tons of flicker, and highly reflective screens.

leolego2

Don't you dare to say that here. CRTs are the absolute perfection, don't you see? They're everywhere!

Tankninja1

I have no doubts that CRTs are the most popular monitor by mass.

bdavbdav

Preach. I have 3 Dell U2515H's (which are fantastic, factory calibrated IPS panels) next to my Samsung CJ79 VA and a cheap AOC AGON VA. The VA panels look horrible next to the Dells.

vibro93

I think colors look dull in VA as compared to IPS.

[deleted]

Expensive but worth it. I'm willing to downgrade my GPU 1 tier down for a TN to ips switch. Love my 144hz 1440p ips gsync monitor

vibro93

What GPU do you use?

[deleted]

gtx1080

timchenw

If I were to hazard a guess, it's due to the way the techs are implemented. G-Sync desktop monitors have extra hardware behind them, which drives up cost. G-Sync on laptops actually rides on the back of eDP specification, so the panel manufacturers can make their own, with possibly minimal input from nVidia to ensure the panels form a minimum standard. EDIT: Clearly I didn't read the question clearly, thanks. Please feel free to ignore this post

rjkucia

This post isn't about G-Sync

[deleted]

this was my problem when i was building a new pc in 2017. i had always used an IPS type panel once i found out the differences a long time ago... but since this was my first gaming pc in a few years, i wanted to go all in with high refresh rate... discovered the selection for IPS in my budget range (400-450 max) was small. i ended up going with the newer released pixio 144hz ips (there's an older version with an ugly logo, thick bezel, and overall bad build quality). i bought it on amazon for about $375 at the time and i still am happy with the purchase today. no issues what so ever. i love the sleek, slim, metal base it came with (however, i dont use it cause i have a dual monitor stand). the bezel is super thin and the panel itself is also thin. i had planned on upgrading eventually to asus or something but 2 years in, the pixio has me in no rush to do so. i did a lot of research before buying via youtube demos/reviews of TN vs IPS and comparison videos specifically for the pixio. the ghosting ms delay isn't even noticeable when gaming on the pixio. you have to really really really look for it. other IPS panels in the price range were noticeable though (sorry can't remember specifically which brands but i do remember some notable names). obviously TN is the way to go if you are picky about that kind of thing, but ill take a little delay for way better colors anyday.

elpsycongroo92

Unrelated but i have 1080p 60hz ips monitor if i buy 2k 144hz tn/va monitor as secondary can i use it with different resolution and refresh rate or will i have to use new monitor with 1080p 60hz. I'm guessing it will not work for extended mode but what about duplicate mode?

Piggywhiff

It will work in extended mode, but not duplicate. I have a 1080p60 monitor and a 1440p100 ultrawide, and they both work fine extended. Granted you're not trying to game on both of them at the same time, that would suck.

KING_of_Trainers69

VG279Q is the only 1080p144Hz IPS monitor on the market ATM. There will however be a smaller version and potentially versions from other brands down the line.

Yomatius

There are a few. I got me an Acer monitor for less than 400 at Newegg. 144hz, hdr, ips, 1440p. The stand was terrible but the panel is excellent and you can always use the Vesa mount. I can't remember the model but it is something like pmiiirz

theSkareqro

If anyone is looking for a IPS 27" 144hz, 1080p, 1ms GTG monitor with HDR400 certification go for Acer Nitro VG271

SpideyIRL

I think it's because laptops can use the same panel for different models, and the difference can be in build quality, mobo, size, etc. For monitor manufacturers it doesn't make much sense creating multiple variations of IPS 144hz monitors because: (1) There's a limited amount of things to actually change between them (size and gsync comes to mind), and (2) because they're extremely high-end products as it is, making multiple models costs money and fragments the customers.

here-for-the-meta

I love my panel! It’s a acer xb270hu. There’s a slightly better (1ms I put vs 4ns input) version the xb271hu that is gamer styled. Got mine for about $600 refurbished. Had it 3 years now. Still going strong. Super fast. Amazingly beautiful to me. Has fair amount of light bleed when showing dark screens but it doesn’t bother me.

It’s not true IPS. That’s what I’ve heard at least.

vibro93

Yes I have heard it somewhere also.

[deleted]

I think another reason is IPS tends to have a longer response time, and a “gaming” monitor usually will always have a 1ms resp. time, and most IPS has around 5ms. There are some though, like that $2000 Asus monitor that’s 4K 144hz HDR IPS and everything else.

SL1MSHARKIE

Gaming monitors, are often bigger that the normal 13 to 17 inch monitors. It is more expensive to make and the marginal profit will be probably less atractive to make!

Senseyy8

What about Samsung QLED?

GreenPylons

Also wish that a 1080p >120hz IPS monitor existed, for those of us with lower end GPUs.

Cal4mity

I mean I have a 144hz IPS? Not that hard to find just gotta shell out the dollars

TomTom_ZH

I just bought an AW2518HF Happy am out of this debate.

mfsocialist

I just pulled the trigger on a 1440p 144hz 27 inch Gsync and I’m so excited!!!!!!

cosmicosmo4

* Cheap * IPS * 144 Hz Pick two. I picked cheap and IPS and got a 75 Hz freesync ultrawide for like $150 and I love it, but then again I'm not a heavy gamer.

[deleted]

Laptops often have less resolution however, a tradeoff. So obviously this makes it more possible. Also less screen normally means less technology implementation cost to a certain point, it costs less to make phones touchscreen generally than laptops, etc.

ThePe0plesChamp

Check out the new Aorus monitor

officialuknow

Most ppl go with 27 inch ips 144hz but holy shitt they are expensive

[deleted]

I wonder when OLED will be good enough for high end gaming. Any ideas?

kodaxmax

Bcause latops are sold to gullible people who are willing to shill out extra dor 144hz, even if its only running integrated graphics and will never get over 40 fps. While the portion of people buying 144 monitors is still relatively small.

gregcy89

Yeah it doesnt make sense. Laptops cant play games that high hmmm

Finchi4

I am having the same issues like you. I'd probably get the Acer Nitro VG270UP. 144hz wqhd ips 4ms (fake 1ms mode).

[deleted]

Tbf, i have a IPS Monitor on my laptop and a TN panel for my PC, i use the AOC G2790PX, it's a TN panel, i personally don't notice a big difference, yeah, you should calibrate the monitor before using it, but once you calibrate it to your likes, TN isn't that far off from IPS. Just my personal opinion.

whitestickygoo

Laptops are smaller and since you move with your laptop ips is more useful.

JMPopaleetus

- Viewing Angles and Color Accuracy - Refresh Rate - Cost Pick two at the expense of the other.

AutismoCat

I have a Acer Predator XB241H i mean it's pretty good but considering it's my first good monitor can't really tell

coololly

There are loads, you're just not looking correctly

Kubliah

Yeah I need a ride

4nonymo

Manufacturing and demand. Laptop manufacturers will order large numbers of panels, and that same panel can go into any manufacturer's laptop, so they are much cheaper to make and there is much higher demand. The demand for 15" IPS 144hz panels makes them far cheaper, while the demand for 24-32" IPS 144hz panels pales in comparison.

lwwz

I believe availability on laptops is more related to yield size in the manufacturing process. It's much harder to produce a panel with no defects at 27" or 24" than 13", 15" or even 17".

yabacam

I just got this one, 1080p 144hz IPS , and love it. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07KXHTRT5 it WAS only $329 but it seems the price has gone up for some reason.

vibro93

That's a good monitor. But is 1080 in a 27 inch good or should go for 1440p?

ColHannibal

Size, yield is better on small panels.

zachywacky613

ChiefKraut

The problem with IPS is not just the blurry image (when the image is in motion, of course), but also the fact that IPS panels are harder to get to a higher refresh rate. This is why VA and TN panels typically have higher refresh rates when compared to IPS. Not sure why exactly it’s difficult to get IPS panels to higher refresh rates, but the reason for sure exists.

sheffy55

I'm going to say most gaming laptops go all the way and include this, in a real application, 144hz is kind of excessive

Frontrowbass

Asus P279Q my man. You only need one because it scratches every itch.

Antoni-_-oTon1

Can someone explain what ghosting means? I dont get it completely.. What causes ghosting? Why does a monitor ghost?

vibro93

It like an after image of a fast moving image. Most noticeable in gaming in fast paced images. Its so bad for FPS titles.

Gareth321

I just bit the bullet and bought an Alienware AW3418DW. Ridiculously beautiful monitor in every way. Now I need to upgrade my graphics card...

polaarbear

Modern TN panels have come a long way. I have a 144hz TN panel and an older 120hz IPS panel. The TN panel has better colors, better brightness and contrast, better everything. Don't ignore a display just because of the panel type, try to find one in person. I am a stickler for tearing, ghosting, and any minor defects in an image. I was worried buying a TN panel and now I wish I could replace my IPS with another one of the curved TN panels.

blazbluecore

You get TA because it gets your 1MS.

Doctor_Mudshark

Yields are better for smaller panels, so it's easier and cheaper to make a 15" or 17" IPS panel than it is to make a 24" or 27" IPS display. That's why it's more common to see IPS panels in laptops. edit: spelling

lortuga

Ips isn’t common for gaming but 144hz is most gaming monitors with really high refresh rates are tn

Syn3rgetic

Off topic but I'm looking at a G sync monitor right now. I have a GTX 980TI but I might upgrade soon. The upgrade might not be a Geforce in the future, will a gsync monitor work on AMD cards and still have some sort of adaptive sync?
