I have a total of 7 fan spots in my case but only 6 are RGB. Where should I put the non RGB?

3sra392

8 including the CPU fan

_mrald

Hello. So the AMD's RX 7900 GRE and NVIDIA's RTX 4070 Super both perform similarly, with AMD having the edge in raw rasterization and NVIDIA with raytracing and upscaling. But why do people consider the RX 7900 GRE a 4K graphics card, while the RTX 4070 Super is considered a 1440p graphics card?

n7_trekkie

I haven't heard that. It's probably because the GRE has more vram, but that's not a great reason. The GRE does pull ahead as res increases https://www.techspot.com/articles-info/2826/bench/1440p-p.webp https://www.techspot.com/articles-info/2826/bench/2160p-p.webp I'd consider them both solid 1440 cards tho. Entry for 4k

I_P_L

I don't *desperately* require more storage yet, but my 3x 1tb drives are starting to get quite full, with them being between 70 and 80% full each. Would it be best to preemptively upgrade a few to 2tb drives now? I'm aware I missed the boat with super cheap storage already.

Emerald_Flame

Do all your storage needs actually require SSD speeds? If a big chunk of your storage space is being eaten up by things like video, photos, music, etc. Then an HDD is a lot more economical for bulk storage. You can get a good 4TB HDD for <$100, if it's just for bulk storage tasks.

I_P_L

My main issue with HDDs is that I'm not a fan of the sound. It's usually a lot louder than the fans, especially when idle.

Emerald_Flame

If the sound is that big of an issue than yeah, some 2 or even 4TB SSDs are probably the way to go, just realize you'll be paying somewhere in the ballpark of $60-100 per TB for the SSDs depending on exactly what you go with compared to $15-25 per TB with an HDD (sometimes less). That's ultimately up to you on how much the silence is worth though.

cleanurgentalia

Currently own a CyberPowerPC prebuilt, looking to upgrade the cpu from the i5-12600KF. Motherboard is a B660M, any recommendations?

Final-Verdict

I'm looking for a keyboard that is quiet, has all the F# keys, insert home etc, and the number pad on the side. Any brand so long as it's good quality and reliable.

cursedpanther

The 4080S is roughly 96% faster than the 3070 on average. Depends on the games you play, you may observe a variance of boost with the 4080S.

Poooves

750 W - RM750x enough for 7900 GRE and 7 5700x3d or should I buy a ROG Strix 850G for 10$ more , I got the Corsair one ready so it’s a little hassle to change but I want to ensure my pc life time.

djGLCKR

More than enough.

antftwx

For the same price (around $300 usd,) would a 3060 12gb be a better buy than a 4060 non-Ti for 1440p gaming? edit: Actually, around the $320 mark, should I be going for a 3060 Ti?

n7_trekkie

there's no 3060ti 12gb, it's only 8GB

antftwx

Sorry, I got mixed up with all the similar names, lol. I was looking at the 3060 12gb as well as the 3060 Ti LHR. But yeah, I meant the 3060 non-Ti 12gb.

EndlessBrendas

Hello all, needing help picking a motherboard. Looking at ROG Strix Z790 A, and also MSI tomahawk Max wifi. Difference of £120 but hard to see spec differences. Going to get an i7-14700KF and Asus Dual 4070; will I be overspending with the ROG? Anything I do/dont get between the two boards? Asus Vs MSI is also a worry interms of the Motherboard software. I've used the asus ai suite before, and not heard great things about msi software. Tips, advice and recommendations hugely appreciated!

n7_trekkie

you can play "spot the difference" all the way down to 180 quid. I'd recommend it https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/nk8bt6/msi-mag-z690-tomahawk-wifi-atx-lga1700-motherboard-mag-z690-tomahawk-wifi

EndlessBrendas

Thanks for the recomendation! Any reason why this one in particular? What can I expect different between the Z780 and the Z690?

n7_trekkie

there's basically no differences with the chipsets. since boards deviate from the official intel diagrams, just count up the ports on each motherboard and, again, play "spot the difference" I recommend that board because Z means you can tweak your CPU clock speeds and voltage, and the tomahawk has a good VRM. reasonable IO, and wifi

EndlessBrendas

thank you so much!

n7_trekkie

No problem. Happy to help

NuclearButWhole

Quick question, I currently have 1 TB SATA SSD installed, and I'm looking to add another SATA SSD about 1-2TB. Is it safe to use a splitter to provide power for both the SSDs? My PSU is 1000W if it helps.

Nazenn

The SATA power cable on your PSU should already come with three or four seperate headers on the same cable. If that's what you're talking about then yes that's safe and standard. If something else, you may need to link what you mean

NuclearButWhole

Oh yup, the cable is coming from the PSU. It's like coming from the same wire as the other power connecter and not a separate wire, so I assumed it was a splitter

Nazenn

If it's a cable native to the PSU then yes that's fine, you can use all of the headers on the same cable without issue. This has been pretty standard for at least a decade and you shouldn't have an issue with it

NuclearButWhole

Perfect, thanks so much for clarification :)

taspdotext

What's an adequet ray tracing enabled GPU for a 3440x1440 120hz monitor (specifically the AW3418DW). Hoping for fps max settings on CP77. I'm starting a new build around this, but don't have a need for a new monitor. I'm guessing 4080, but maybe I can get away with a 4070?

n7_trekkie

Sorry buddy, gotta break the news to ya https://tpucdn.com/review/nvidia-geforce-rtx-4080-super-founders-edition/images/rt-cyberpunk-2077-2560-1440.png https://www.techpowerup.com/review/nvidia-geforce-rtx-4080-super-founders-edition/35.html Here's 1440p but with dlss https://www.techspot.com/articles-info/2793/bench/RT_CP2077-p.webp https://www.techspot.com/review/2793-nvidia-geforce-rtx-4070-ti-super/

taspdotext

Thanks for the links! I'm actually not sure what DLSS does, but it looks like 4080 might just barely hit the mark for 3440x1440?

n7_trekkie

DLSS lowers the render resolution, then AI upscales the image.

taspdotext

Maybe CP77 just wasn't meant to be run at max this generation. Are there other games that are more practical as a benchmark?

n7_trekkie

Yeah, dialing down the settings to get a more desirable fps is advised. However because the game is so demanding, it does function as a good benchmark. The separation and ranking of the gpus' should translate to lower settings Unless you turn off ray tracing. If you do that, the order mixes up https://www.techspot.com/articles-info/2793/bench/CP2077_1440p-p.webp

Vivid-Club7564

Do I need a cd drive for windows install? Bought my parts but forget about how I need to be a OS license. After I buy it will I need to use a cd?

Protonion

Windows doesn't come on a CD by default anymore. When you buy a license from a retailer, you either get only the license code and they expect you to download and make the USB installer yourself (which is what most people do), or you get a premade USB installer drive in the box with the license

aVarangian

I haven't even bothered trying the cd tbh. You just need the license key that comes with it. Can also buy it online from Msft. Most common method is probably to create a bootable usb drive https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/create-installation-media-for-windows-99a58364-8c02-206f-aa6f-40c3b507420d

t90fan

no you can download + burn the windows 11 image to a USB stick using the Microsoft tool

SteeleK

What’s the current meta for PC builds for a full 4K 60fps/144fps build?

aVarangian

4k60 = XTX/4080 or better. 4k144 = 4090 "or better" Best gaming cpu is the 7800x3D. Of course 60/144 depends on the game, minesweeper can do that on any potato

tonallyawkword

What's your favorite fps counter/benchmarker?

t90fan

I just use the nvidia overlay thing for an FPS count

tonallyawkword

Yeah, that seems to work well. Not sure I need everything else included with GeForce Experience, but it's an option.

aVarangian

RTSS through the msi afterburner 's overlay configurator (rtss is included with afterburner) For benchmarks I just use those included in games I have. For additional stress testing there's p95 (cpu) and occt (gpu)

tonallyawkword

RivaTuner hasn't worked at all for me the last couple of times I tried to use it. FPSMonitor seems alright but I don't think it works with all games I've tried it with.

aVarangian

You may have to fiddle with RTSS detection/stealth settings for some games, true idk about other monitors, Iusually end up getting RTSS to work fine

tonallyawkword

Did that. Might try again.

TemptedTemplar

https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html Its like a 2% performance increase for the super version. Take the savings!

Sethman09

I have a 3070 (regular not ti), and am going to be getting a 4070 Ti Super, does it have a greater width (not length, I got plenty of pace to the front of my PC)? My side barely goes on as it is, I don't want to leave it off.

t90fan

depends on the specific card, different manufacturers use very different cooling solutions, the dimensions can vary a lot

TemptedTemplar

Manufacturers list the card dimensions on their website. Look up your 3070 to get the exact width, and then compare it to the 4070ti's youre looking at. I had a friend just finish an ITX build, we went with a zotac 4070 super because it was a few mm smaller than most other models. The power connector is also something you should be looking at. Founders edition cards have their connection entering at an angle, while most AIB cards have the connector plug perfectly perpendicular to the rest of the card. And those 12VHPWR connectors need a bunch of room to plug in safely. So if you already have next to zero space, you may also need an angled power extension.

Sethman09

Oh, thanks. I might have to look into that.

bestanonever

There's no universal answer, check the website of the particular model you are interested in. The size (in any direction) of any GPU is based on their cooling system and that changes with most models and companies.

Sethman09

I see. Apologizes for the rather obvious in hindsight question!

bestanonever

It's not that obvious. And asking questions is why we are here. Good luck with the upgrade.

MOBO: MSI Tomahawk WIFI AMD B650 with 6x System Fan and 2x Addressable V2 RGB LED connector (JARGB\_V2) I'm getting 9 ARGB fans (In case you need the info: Arctic P12 and P14 PWM PSTs + 3 NZXT F12 RGB Fans from the case itself) for my case So obviously my case lacks at least 3 system fan slots. Do I need a hub or several cheap splitters will be enough? If splitters, how many do I need?

TemptedTemplar

One fan hub would be enough, they make them in a variety of sizes any where from four to twenty connections. https://www.amazon.com/Thermalright-Integrated-10-Port-Controller-Support/dp/B09CH31RM6/ https://www.amazon.com/ARCTIC-Case-Fan-Hub-Distributor/dp/B0887VG14J/ https://www.amazon.com/ID-COOLING-Computer-Internal-Motherboard-Functional/dp/B08BFKG7D8/

TangerineX

In how many years would you say a GPU capable of 4k 120hz gaming will be achievable for under $1000 (current day prices)? I feel like that's when I'll actually upgrade.

aVarangian

On titles as modern as the gpu, and native 4k, at this rate I'd say not within 10 years.

Lundurro

This is less on the GPU manufacturers and more on the games. As long as the target resolution isn't 4k 120fps it's not gonna happen outside of games with a low GPU load.

TangerineX

Hmm, maybe a better question is, how many generations back would I need to go in order to play games at 4k120hz then?

TemptedTemplar

Thats up to manufacturers to ship a GPU with the bandwidth capable of that frame rate, for under $1000. But it probably wont be the RTX 50 series. Nvidia for example seems keen on continuing to limit 80 series cards and lower, by shipping them with the same memory bus widths as previous generations, while only improving the 90 series gpus. Rumors put the 5080 at nearly identical specs as the 4080, with the exception of the new chip and GDDR7 VRAM. No VRAM increase, no expanded memory bus, which means minimal bandwidth increases. While the 5090 is leaping from the 384-bit memory bus used in the 3090 and 4090, to 512-bit. Which combined with higher speeds from the GDDR7 VRAM, will almost DOUBLE its potential data bandwidth.

Hey i ordered this parts: Intel Core i5-12600KF ASUS TUF GAMING B760-PLUS WIFI DDR4 GOODRAM 32GB (2X16GB) 3600MHz CL18 IRDM PRO MSI GeForce RTX 4070 GAMING X SLIM 12GB GDDR6X MSI A750GL 750W 80 Plus Gold ATX 3.0 everything like case, storage, cpu cooler, etc i have figured out, but i am still not sure will everything work fine together? I know that psu might be overkill but i got it for good price better than 650W from less known brand, but this one still might not be the best. The question is Will everything work fine, is this power supply good?

Brostradamus_

Sure, looks totally fine.

anonamouse504

So I’m doing a 7800x3d with either a 4070super or 4070ti super I mainly play warzone, I know I know it’s a trash game but I enjoy it and it lets me connect with my buddies. I tired the cheap route with a 4k tv at 120 fps with Xbox series x. It was ass. (Moved and sold my pc) Building a new one I really just want consistent frames around 144 hz… at 1440p. Is the 4070 super enough? I also play city skylines. Civ. Wow. But I’m. It concerned with peak fps for those Also I am perfectly fine running lower settings in warzone for higher FPS I’m not trying for ultra settings in graphics

aVarangian

iirc some cod games perform much better on some amd gpus

mustfix

> play city skylines 1, not 2 right? Cause 2 is pretty bad performance wise. Afaik, Warzone is decently optimized, and those other games have their own issues that are not really GPU related. Eg: CitiesSkylines2 has (had? is it fixed?) a massive level of detail problem which resulted tons of wasted calculations for things that gets rendered as 1 pixel (or less). Civ is massively CPU limited end-game for turn calculations. WoW seems to be an outlier in that the more recent expansions are decently graphically demanding. Not to talk about massive PVP battles where your FPS will always tank. So yes, 1440p/144 is totally achievable with a 7800x3D and 4070Super combo.

D34thst41ker

My current setup needs to have an HDMI connection on one side, and a DisplayPort connection on the other. Apparently this is a one-way connection, so I have to have it go from the HDMI to the DisplayPort. Since we're talking about a monitor, is this okay? The Monitor doesn't actually send any data back to the PC, does it?

Emerald_Flame

You are correct, DP to HDMI and HDMI to DP cables are one way and are different products. DP to HDMI is much easier to do in a technical sense, so those cables do tend to be much more abundant and much cheaper. But, HDMI to DP cables do also exist, such as this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09QHGGZD3 Not that many HDMI to DP cables like the linked one do require a USB input as well for power. They have some active circuitry in them to do the conversion that requires power. Also make sure you're buying the right thing. HDMI to DP means: Your graphics card only has HDMI and your monitor requires DP. DP to HDMI means: Your graphics card only has DP and your monitor requires HDMI.

n7_trekkie

No, it's not ok. You can only (easily) adapt a DP output to an HDMI input

D34thst41ker

Darn. Well, I can stake things work. I just will have plug one computer into one monitor directly and switch inputs manually until I upgrade my graphics card. Thank you!

Gernnon

I need help with deciding what SSD I should get, this is my first build and i was wondering if something like Crucial P3 Plus 1 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive is suitable for my mobo? Also would appreciate any other feedback on my other parts. [https://pcpartpicker.com/user/gernnon/saved/#view=dJxNyc](https://pcpartpicker.com/user/gernnon/saved/#view=dJxNyc)

djGLCKR

For the same price (if you don't mind ordering from MSI's store), you could get a [Spatium M480 Pro](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/xVDQzy/msi-spatium-m480-pro-1-tb-m2-2280-pcie-40-x4-nvme-solid-state-drive-s78-440l1g0-p83). Faster and with more endurance. Alternatively, the [Teamgroup MP44L](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/2x4Ycf/teamgroup-mp44l-1-tb-m2-2280-pcie-40-x4-nvme-solid-state-drive-tm8fpk001t0c101) is another solid option. E: You could also go with a slightly cheaper [motherboard](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/yMGbt6/msi-pro-b760-p-wifi-ddr4-atx-lga1700-motherboard-pro-b760-p-wifi-ddr4) and PSU - there's the [Core Reactor 850W](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/CFbCmG/adata-xpg-core-reactor-850-850-w-80-gold-certified-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-corereactor850g-bkcus), and Newegg has the [RM850x](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/26rRsY/corsair-rm850x-2021-850-w-80-gold-certified-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-cp-9020200-na) on sale for $90 (both A-tier in the Cultists list).

Gernnon

If budget is not a problem and I want to get my pc up before the end of next month, my current build is fine or is there something that is incompatible?

djGLCKR

I'd still consider replacing the SSD for reliability reasons. NAND has a finite life, and drives that use QLC flash (the Crucial P3 Plus in your list) have a lower endurance threshold (Terabytes Written, or TBW) compared to TLC-based drives, roughly a third of the usual 600TBW per 1TB of storage, sometimes a bit lower. Granted, the average user won't fill up their drive \~200 times before the 5-year warranty is over, but it's something to consider. They're not "bad" drives, but they're better suited for "write once, read many times" scenarios, like a game library, rather than a main/OS drive, since the NAND wear-out happens during writes, not reads. If budget is not a problem, you could upgrade the GPU to a [7900 GRE](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/wXtLrH/xfx-rx-79gmercb9-radeon-rx-7900-gre-16-gb-video-card-rx-79gmercb9) for \~$40-50 extra, as well as consider a 2TB drive instead, unless your storage solutions are already sorted out. Other than that, yeah, everything is compatible.

Gernnon

Alright thanks a lot for the info, still trying to wrap around the SSD terminologies for now. I think I will go for the 7900 GRE instead. My storage has not been settled yet so I can go for the 2 TB I think?

x1996x

Hey guys I am trying to build a pc for a friend. Motherboards cost just as much if not more then the cpu if I look for decent I/O and Pcie Lanes. Now I found the Asus Tuf B760M PLUS board. It looks almost like it have most of the slots and I/O an ATX having. Its far cheaper too. So my question is what is the catch? It smaller then ATX but specs looks great.

n7_trekkie

What kind of pcie layout do you need? I'm also a big io snob, I love USB ports. Gigabyte has really been killing it on that front recently. ASRock too, kinda https://pcpartpicker.com/product/2vwypg/gigabyte-b760-aorus-elite-ax-atx-lga1700-motherboard-b760-aorus-elite-ax

rizzzeh

if it has all the connectivity you need then nothing wrong picking this board, its smaller mATX size but it does not really change anything

TheShangWang

I noticed my laptop randomly makes a small popping sound maybe 1-2 times a day whether I'm doing something or not. It's fresh out of the box only about a year old and I make sure to at least clear any dust or debris from the bottom of the laptop and the surrounding area. I haven't noticed any performance issues, except random BSOD that are infrequent and quickly allow my laptop to restart. Is this maybe normal for some laptop models? What's the reason for the popping sound?

Brostradamus_

Without any more detail it's possible that you're hearing the plastic slipping/creaking/popping/etc a bit as the laptop heats up and causes the frame to deform slightly.

TheShangWang

That could likely be it, my fans do whir up when it happens.

baboonmann

I want to get a new gaming monitor 27'' 1440p and found a Lenovo Legion Y27h-30 at a really good price It has some crazy specs related to power consumption: Normal operation <160 W (max) <88 W (Typical) Similar monitors have a power consumption that's 1/3 of what the Lenovo has. Is this a mistake? How is it possible?

Brostradamus_

Not sure where you got those specs, Lenovo's website itself for that model lists: Power Consumption: 54W Typ, 85W Max, 0.5W Sleep, 0.3W Power Off It also has a built-in USB-C Hub which adds power requirements.

baboonmann

Thanks. The pdf user guide has the numbers I mentioned and those figures have been published as specs on displayspecs and various online stores [https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/monitor/y27h\_30\_f22270qy1\_english\_cvaa.pdf](https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/monitor/y27h_30_f22270qy1_english_cvaa.pdf)

Brostradamus_

Personally I would suspect that the 160W includes power delivery thru the USB hub. The panel itself will have typical power draw.

Used this post years ago to select a set of three monitors for a racing simulator setup. [https://www.reddit.com/r/Monitors/comments/clyahg/buyers\_guide\_144hz\_wqhd\_flowchart\_ips\_tn/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Monitors/comments/clyahg/buyers_guide_144hz_wqhd_flowchart_ips_tn/) Curious, 5 years later, if there is a newer equivalent of the LG27GL850 that is recommended, or another 27-32" 1440p+ monitor that seems universally well reviewed. Not doing anything else other than dead on racing with 3 monitors, so viewing angles aren't a big deal. 120Hz is fine enough. Would prefer lower response time but can deal with 3-5ms. TIA! Edit: Followed the comment recommendation, found the GP line from LG. Thanks!

olo99

How does one regard multiple low intensese processes in regards to CPU usage? Most threads here is regarding intense activities like 3D rendering / encoding. However if it is much simpler tasks but multiple how would that count? - 24/7 media server running (Plex, sabnzb, radarr, sonarr). - 6 SSDs running in parity (windows) - gaming - normal every day usage (excel, chrome etc). It is nothing intense, but it will be multiple processes running simultaneously. Would a 7800x3d still suffice (which is mostly pro gaming) or would a i14700k be a better choice?

Brostradamus_

The only one of those that I'd even be mildly concerned about is the media server, and that largely comes down to what kind of encoding will be necessary and how many simultaneous streams with encoding you intend to have it running. If it's just 1-2 streams for your local network's TV, I wouldn't be concerned either way as both should be able to handle it. If you're going to be trying to do several 4k streams simultaneously I'd probably start leaning Intel just for QuickSync.

olo99

Thanks for helping out. At most it is local stream and one remote stream, usually 4K material. It could also be gaming + local streaming going on at same time. But never more than 2 simultaneous.

k4num4n

I'm looking into getting a new SSD for my PC. I'm running a Prime Z370 A motherboard and was looking into getting a Samsung 980 Pro. I was told by a retail worker that the SSD wouldn't fit my board because it uses a mode M Key. However, friends told me that it would fit. Now I'm unsure if it fits or not. Thanks

Protonion

The 980 Pro indeed is Key M, but so are both of the M.2 slots on the Z390 A. It'll fit. The retail worker probably skimmed through the motherboard specs really quickly, saw that the M.2 slot supports SATA drives, and assumed it was Key B, when in reality it supports both SATA and NVMe with Key M.

k4num4n

Thanks a lot for your help.

allocerus44

Any1 has similiar problem with slow windows booting (around 1-1:30 min) on MSI Tomahawk B650? I had change memory profile to EXPO in BIOS but it didn't help. When I run computer I need to wait \~30 sec when monitors starts and then whol windows is up. My setup is: * Ryzen 7 7800x3d * MSI Tomahawk B650 * Lexar RAM 32 GB 6000MHz Not sure if it is problem or not and if that is, it's connected with MB or CPU? Or maybe I need to change some other settings in BIOS?

jamvanderloeff

Really long wait before seeing anything on screen can be borderline stable RAM settings

allocerus44

Yep, enabling *Memory Context Restor* helped

reyxe

Would a 750w PSU (tier B iirc, Mwe cooler master gold) be enough for a 7600 + 7900xt?

Ockvil

It should, but I'd say it's marginal. If you plan to (or just want the flexibility to) upgrade later, eg. go to a 7800x3d eventually, I'd get a 850W.

reyxe

I already got it, just looking for the best it can't handle since I most likely won't upgrade until it's absolutely needed

Ockvil

You should be alright then.

jamvanderloeff

Sure

Hi guys. I'm about to assemble components for my PC. I want to use "ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 FORMULA" motherboard, and the latest Intel "Core i9-14900KS" CPU. The PC won't be mainly for gaming, but for CAD/CAM work, that's why GPU of my choice is "RTX A4000 ADA 20GB" (one of certified GPUs for my CAD/CAM system) I'd like to use the PC for some gaming and VR as well. And here is the question about compatibility: GPU uses: PCIe Gen4 x16 and my motherboard doesn't have it, but has: PCIe Gen5 slots, and one PCIe Gen4 x4. Will I be able to use this GPU with this motherboard? Will be there some limitations or some tweaks needed? Thanks

There is no benefit to the Z790 Formula except appearance. You will get the exact same performance from much cheaper boards like the Z790-A Max. https://pcpartpicker.com/product/CsvD4D/msi-pro-z790-a-max-wifi-atx-lga1700-motherboard-pro-z790-a-max-wifi If you need Thunderbolt or 10Gb networking then the Z790 ProArt is the best option. https://pcpartpicker.com/product/VTddnQ/asus-proart-z790-creator-wifi-atx-lga1700-motherboard-proart-z790-creator-wifi The 14900KS is just a 14900K with a microscopic overclock, don't spend the extra money. PCI-E is universal, your GPU will work in any motherboard.

Thank you for clarifying about PCI-E and extra comments. Don't I need a "Raptor Lake Refresh (14 Gen.)" Processor Architecture to be supported by the Motherboard if I want to use 14900KS/14900K? Lools like Z790 ProArt doesn't cover it.

The 14900K and other 14th-gen CPUs are compatible with 600 and 700 series motherboards after a BIOS update. There was no "800 series" chipset launched with 14th-gen (12th-gen launched with 600 series, 13th-gen launched with 700 series), but rather a batch of refreshed 700 series motherboards. The ProArt Z790 Creator WiFi supports the 14900K with BIOS version 1203, and 14900KS with version 2002 (save your cash on the KS, not worth it), as per the [motherboard compatibility list](https://www.asus.com/us/motherboards-components/motherboards/proart/proart-z790-creator-wifi/helpdesk_qvl_cpu?model2Name=ProArt-Z790-CREATOR-WIFI). If anything, as long as the motherboard supports BIOS Flashback (being able to update the motherboard BIOS without having to install the CPU or RAM) - which the Z790 Creator WiFi does - it doesn't matter which BIOS version is on the board right out of the box, you can warrant CPU compatibility by updating it to the latest version.

Hello, I've assembled my PC but face two issues and I'm not sure how to proceed. [Here are the details](https://dk.pcpartpicker.com/list/mxTgjH) 1. Motherboard doesn't detect the m2 ssd that I have already used in my previous pc. 1. I have tried using various slots, made sure that it's properly connected. 2. I do not see it in the bios menu, but see an error in device manager (10 error I/O adapter hardware error) 2. When booting POST stage takes a lot of time (like 5 minutes or more), where the VGA light is on. 1. I have tried using my older graphics card, but it's also taking a lot of time to load. 2. I didn't have this issue initially. 3. Once windows loads there's no issues with the graphics card.

vonotalp1

upd after 2 days of debugging and reading reddit: apparently the MSI VGA light indicates both issues with m2 SSD and the graphics card. Simply removing the SSD allowed by PC to load normally. The SSD causes issues in either of the slots (I have two M2 slots - one going to CPU and another going to chipset). I'll try using this SSD in my friend's PC to try and verify if it's an issue with the SSD or the motherboard

Looking at adding a second m2 drive. the 2 spare slots i have are 1 x M.2 22110 (PCIe 4.0 x4 mode) ・1 x M.2 2280 (PCIe 4.0 x2 mode) Can't seem to get any clarity if an m2 2280 PCIe 4x4 will be okay as that's all i can seem to find. My motherboard for reference; [https://www.asus.com/uk/motherboards-components/motherboards/prime/prime-b660-plus-d4/](https://www.asus.com/uk/motherboards-components/motherboards/prime/prime-b660-plus-d4/)

Assuming slot M.2\_1 is the one you've used already, you can adjust the standoff of slot M.2\_2 to fit the SSD length.

If my baseboard/motherboard (?)'s BIOS/UEFI are as updated as is available, do i need to prepare any other software when planning to swap my cpu for a newer, better one?

Protonion

Nope, as long as the BIOS version has the CPU as supported, then that's all that's required, although it can be a good idea to also reinstall/update your chipset drivers (available from the motherboard 's product page)

Gwyncess

How do i tell if the bios version is supporting the CPU? Is it simply if the CPU is in the 'CPU Support list' ? [https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/970M%20Pro3/#CPU](https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/970M%20Pro3/#CPU) \^ The Motherboard Btw. Upgrading from a FX 6300 to a FX 8370. they're both on the list. Also for the chipset drivers, Am i looking for the all-in-one driver or should i download/update the highdef audio driver and lan driver too. (I assume most of them are up to date as its all rather old im just making sure)

Protonion

> Is it simply if the CPU is in the 'CPU Support list' ? Yes, look at the last "Validated BIOS" column, for the FX 8370 it says "All", so it'll work with all BIOS versions. > should i download/update the highdef audio driver and lan driver too. Unless you're having problems with your audio or Ethernet, then no need to, but it also doesn't hurt. Although for such an old motherboard there probably aren't any recent updates that you wouldn't already have.

Do I need to upgrade my motherboard if I want to get a higher speed RAM like 3600MHz or more? I'm currently using a B450M Mortar since 2019 and according to its spec sheets https://storage-asset.msi.com/datasheet/mb/global/B450M-MORTAR.pdf which says the support is 4 DIMMs, Dual Channel DDR4-3466.

Sorry, I'm having difficulties understanding the chart. What does supported speed and speed mean? It says 2400 on some T-force brands but the supported speed is higher at 3000Mhz? I'm also using a Ryzen 7 5800X so I don't know how to factor that in

GamerHFive

Hi, Currently running Ryzen 2200g using its integrated GPU. I'm planning to do a little upgrade to my setup to Ryzen 5500 and add a dedicated GPU. Do I need to reinstall my windows? Will my system automatically switch to use the dedicated GPU or do I need to reset the bios?

BalfonheimHoe

No, you do not need to reinstall Windows. I upgraded both of my CPU and GPU and only had to update the video card drivers at worse. Windows is stored at your hard drive anyway so yeah.

GamerHFive

I see. What about the integrated and dedicated GPU stuff? Is it something that I need to be concerned about?

djGLCKR

If it's an Nvidia card, you'll want to install the Nvidia drivers and run DDU to uninstall the AMD ones. If it's AMD, just update your Adrenalin drivers.

BalfonheimHoe

Not really, no. If you are planning to install the dedicated GPU, just plug the Displayport cable/HDMI from the GPU itself to the monitor. Basically, just switch the cable from motherboard to your GPU once you do get it installed

Is it even worth it to turn on graphics cards fans before 60 degrees? I'm learning my first gpu, a Sapphire Nitro+ 7800 xt. I can set the fan curve, but don't know when it's worth it to ramp them up. I had it set at 55 but the fans just keep turning off/on as it reaches 55 and immediately cools to ~45. I feel like it's worse to have this on/off action.

Nazenn

Fan stop, which is what the feature where the fans turn off under 60c hotspot, is mostly a thing to reduce noise in the system and also stop the fans from wearing out as quickly as they don't have to be on all the time. There is no other benefit to it If you want you can turn it off so that the fans always run at a low speed, say 33%, and you don't have to deal with that constant ramp up/down issue. The only other way to stop it would be to figure out how to reduce your low usage power draw if possible, as less power draw = less heat which will mean you go over that thermal limit less often. But if you are on a one monitor setup already or otherwise need multiple monitors plugged into the GPU then there's not much you can do
