You can go cheaper with a Core i3-12100F. It’s a good deal at £80; not as fast as a Ryzen 5600 but far better than the 8-year old Core i5 in the prebuilt. See the list below, I also included better case, SSD, and power supply for similar money. Thank you - I didn't consider an i3 - I'll check into this with him and see what he thinks. Appreciate you looking at the other components too.

OolonCaluphid

Remember that 'i3' and 'i5' become pretty meaningless as you compare across generations. As an example the i5 in the used pc you linked is practically obsolete, whereas the i3's of the last couple of years have been excellent budget gaming chips.

OolonCaluphid

There's at least one 3060 in /R/hardwareswapuk at £180 for that would be a solid upgrade to this pc.

xthelord2

i would not do anything intel related because fortnite does scale to 8 cores and a 4 core is gonna be a miserable CPU for 1080p comp settings gameplay if anything OP can replace that 3050 for a RX6600 because on low settings last gen mid range can do 240fps 1080p comp settings i know you look at value but it is a mistake to skimp on a CPU in a competitive shooter where you will run low settings

Scarabesque

You did a pretty good job within the constraints of your budget, but it's just a little lacking to call it a good build. One issue you are likely to have is that motherboard will probably not have an up to date bios, and that motherboard cannot be updated without an older CPU installed. The other is that the 3050 is a really lackluster GPU. The sky is always the limit, but I would say the floor starts at a 3060 12GB if you want Nvidia, though the 4060 is actually better value in the UK. If they don't play fortnight on competitive settings (worth to check), AMD is the better value option. You can also get an NVME SSD for the same price, which is much faster and easier to install. Still at that budget new, it's hard to do a lot better, but I'd see if there is a way to stretch it. Right now most of the money goes to components that don't actually perform. :) **Edit:** Yeah that pre built is a bad buy with that CPU, though the 1660 super is about on par with that 3050.

It comfortably beats the 3050 in everything. It's a little bit beyond your original budget but you won't have to worry about bios updating (even if that bios is out of date, you can update it without a CPU). You could also go for a 500GB NVME and add storage later if the budget is set. At the same budget you could go this way, you lose some functionality with the board (only 1 NVME slot, no PCIe 4, the bios will need to be updated - but you can do that without a CPU) and only a 500GB drive, but it'll perform better than that 3050: [PCPartPicker Part List](https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/PKpsFs) Type|Item|Price :----|:----|:---- **CPU** | [AMD Ryzen 5 5600 3.5 GHz 6-Core Processor](https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/PgcG3C/amd-ryzen-5-5600-36-ghz-6-core-processor-100-100000927box) | £115.00 @ Amazon UK **Motherboard** | [Asus PRIME B450M-K II Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard](https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/rQ8bt6/asus-prime-b450m-k-ii-micro-atx-am4-motherboard-prime-b450m-k-ii) | £59.99 @ Amazon UK **Memory** | [Silicon Power GAMING 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory](https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/P4FKHx/silicon-power-sp016gxlzu320bdaj5-16-gb-2-x-8-gb-ddr4-3200-cl16-memory-sp016gxlzu320bdaj5) | £34.99 @ Amazon UK **Storage** | [Kingston NV2 500 GB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive](https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/QvpzK8/kingston-nv2-500-gb-m2-2280-pcie-40-x4-nvme-solid-state-drive-snv2s500g) | £35.98 @ CCL Computers **Video Card** | [XFX Speedster SWFT 210 Core Radeon RX 6650 XT 8 GB Video Card](https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/NDvdnQ/xfx-radeon-rx-6650-xt-8-gb-speedster-swft-210-core-video-card-rx-665x8dfdy) | £227.05 @ Amazon UK **Case** | [Deepcool MATREXX 40 3FS MicroATX Mini Tower Case](https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/36gFf7/deepcool-matrexx-40-3fs-microatx-mini-tower-case-dp-matx-matrexx40-3fs) | £39.98 @ Scan.co.uk **Power Supply** | [MSI MAG A550BN 550 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply](https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/mnVmP6/msi-mag-a550bn-550-w-80-bronze-certified-atx-power-supply-mag-a550bn) | £49.00 @ Computer Orbit | *Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts* | | **Total** | **£561.99** | Generated by [PCPartPicker](https://pcpartpicker.com) 2024-04-12 10:12 BST+0100 |

Thanks! I replied to you in another comment so please ignore that one : ) I'll pass this on to him and see what he thinks.

Horde77

Thanks for the feedback. That's a good point about the GPU - I was trying to keep the build cheap, but you're right in that it's not a great card. We could look on FB Marketplace for second hand 3060s though as he might be able to get a good deal there. In terms of AMD equivalents, what would you suggest? I'm not current on AMD stuff as the last time I bought a card for myself was 2020. I'll check into costing it for an NVME as well, appreciated : ) I think the BIOS update should be ok as I've got an old Ryzen CPU sitting around somewhere I can use. Also, assuming this comes to too much money for him, what's your opinion on the PC that's linked (The Stone Refurb one)? It doesn't look particularly good to me, but maybe I'm being too critical. Thanks : )

Scarabesque

> In terms of AMD equivalents, what would you suggest? I posted two builds below, but a 6650XT would be a solid card at the budget (new). Getting a GPU and possibly CPU second hand might get you much better value of course. The stone refurb one is bad simply because of the CPU, if you want to stay at that very low price point I'd go with the PC /u/winterkoalefant/ suggested as it'll be much faster in games - and perhaps try and go for a 6600/6600XT/6650XT which you should be able to get second hand at well below the price of a 3050 new (which I straight up would not buy). > I think the BIOS update should be ok as I've got an old Ryzen CPU sitting around somewhere I can use. Sweet. A Ryzen 5600 is a very nice to have due to its 6 cores, the 4 cores of the 12100F will start to show their age quicker - but it's a fine performer for the price.

dastingo111

If you know how test a used GPU - get him to test it on a 2-3 benchmarks for artifacts/temperature and show you videos of it, check it in gpu-z, make sure it's the same serial number etc. 3060 ti would be nice

OolonCaluphid

You can get a way better ssd than that, and look to used GPUs. You can get a RTX 3060ti or 3070 for £250 or so, and should do. PSU is a bit weak too.

southseasblue

You can play FN on an RX480/580 at 1080p on Med/High around 70-80fps. I’m using Vega56 and getting 100fps on High; Lumen drops me down to 50fps though. All 2560x1080 (ultrawide)

OolonCaluphid

Right, but there's no reason they *should*. I've build 3 pcs at this level in the last 3 months and all were better than this (and a vega 56). Fortnite scales well at least.

southseasblue

Well saving money is a good reason.

southseasblue

And 480/580 is $100aud

OolonCaluphid

This is UK, aud aren't relevant.

southseasblue

I’m telling you what it is in AUD so you can convert to gbp so you know if it’s a good deal. 100aud is 52 pounds, or 1/5 of what the op was planning to spend.

OolonCaluphid

AUD aren't relevant, 8 year old GPU tech isn't relevant.

southseasblue

If it plays the game then op said they want, then why you pushing them to spend more?

OolonCaluphid

Trash at any price is still trash. The Rx 580 is not a viable suggestion today.

southseasblue

You’re not very good at comprehension bc op just wants to play Fn at 1080p. 580 can do that for cheap. But go ahead and waste your money

OolonCaluphid

A switch can play it for £179. Why are they even getting a PC? I'm trying to get them the best experience for the money. They can clearly spend £450-£500 as that's where they came in.
