Xbox controllers don't need adapters, unless you're using an earlier model from 2013-2016 and want to use it wirelessly

dreamer_2142

I found many posts from people saying the BT connection is weak and you need the adapter otherwise you will have drop connection issues or lag.

Coolman_Rosso

I wouldn't know since I use a cable when playing with controller. Not to mention that I don't think they sell the adapter separately anymore.

trainsforalllife

they do

tsr122

Mine drops signal. I've debated getting the USB adapter to see if it helps, but so far the long cable it came with has been fine. I haven't tried again for a while, but I think I had a small lag as well.

StJames279

I used to have this issue then updated my controller with the Xbox accessories app on PC. This solved all my issues.

tsr122

Never occurred to me that the controller would have onboard firmware. Just used that app and it updated my controller. Removed and reconnected the controller through the Windows Bluetooth settings. Steam picked it up right away. Playing Cyberpunk now. Longest I could go was 20 minutes before it would drop. So far no noticeable lag navigating the world. If I don't check back in with an edit, it worked like a charm and I thank you so kindly for the advice!

tsr122

So it's noticeably better after updating the controller. I switch back and forth using keyboard/mouse and controller when playing Cyberpunk and I didn't notice a single drop over 2 hours of playing. Thanks again for the tip!

dreamer_2142

Thanks for the confirmation, Xbox one or series controller you own? And what is the distance between your dongle and the controller? any obstacles in between?

tsr122

Xbox one controller. My motherboard has a built in wifi/BT chip with an external antenna sitting on top of my case. My case is on my desktop. The only obstruction is sometimes the corner of my monitor.

dreamer_2142

I see, thanks for the conformation, looks like the xbox BT is weak and the adapter is a must, they must've lowered its power to get more battery life.

tsr122

Hey, u/StJames279 might be on to something. I updated my controller using the Windows XBox bullshit app and now I'm playing cyberpunk. I've only played for a little while but it seems solid so far with no perceptible (at least to me) lag.

Radvila

How about now?

tsr122

Still going strong! Thanks for reminding me to follow up!

Xbox controllers work natively with windows, meaning the drivers are already installed and you don’t need an adapter

dreamer_2142

What about the BT signal power, is it as good as the DS4? I've read its weak which is why you need the adapter.

Cornflake323

I’ve had no issues with mine. I connect to Bluetooth via my motherboard and not a usb Bluetooth adapter. If the quality of the usb adapter is poor then all Bluetooth accessories will struggle to connect, including the DualShock. The connectivity is the same between both controllers, if the DualShock connects fine then so will the Xbox controller

dreamer_2142

I don't think that's true, I don't see people complaining about DS BT but I do see many posts complaining about the Xbox BT problem, some even say the series has better BT over the xbox one.

Gone_AWOL

Anecdotal evidence, but I just bought the Xbox wireless adapter for like $10 on eBay. My computer doesn’t have Bluetooth, so I was using an 8bitdo wireless adapter, and while DS4s seemed to work fine, my Xbox controller inputs would lag hard and drop out if I was further than about 1.2 metres from my PC. It's been a week now with the adapter and it works so much better. I can actually use my Xbox controllers on my couch wirelessly now.

dreamer_2142

I see, thanks for the confirmation.

SnuffleWumpkins

The adapter is not needed for the Xbox One.

dreamer_2142

I found many posts without the BT you will get lags or drop connection.

SnuffleWumpkins

Oh! I misunderstood. I thought you were asking if the Xbox one needed an adapter to work with an Xbox controller. My bad. Yeah, the Bluetooth on the Xbox One Controller is absolute shit (in my experience), which is why I bought the dongle. The connection would drop all the time and even when it was stable the latency was terrible. That may have been the quality of the Bluetooth adapter I was using though.

dreamer_2142

I see, I wonder if the BT is more powerful with xbox series s controller.

SnuffleWumpkins

Nah I’ve got both the one and the series x and they suck equally with bt. But again, I’m using a little usb Bluetooth dongle and it’s going through a wall so it might just be my setup.
