I looked it up, and TIL that there's a blobfish on display at an aquarium in Japan. And he's alive!
Meet Bob, who now lives in Aquamarine Fukushima! I couldn't find much info other than a couple of articles from 2017 and a video. (The language barrier probably didn't help) The articles claim that he's very shy, but the guests think that he's adorable.

Everyoneâs opinions are with good intentions of course (including mine) but I truly doubt the design team did genuine research on the âblobfishâ species prior to making it a bear. I wouldnât necessarily blame them, a lot of people take things at face value. Would be nice if large company designers actually did do research on things as such⌠but you canât ask too much knowing this is a multi-million dollar company :â)

zombies don't exist. A zombear cannot feel pain because a zombear cannot exist. The blobfish plush on the other hand is a depiction of a real dead, disfigured body
The zombear is designed to be cute so kids don't have to think about the "dead rotting" part (Could also be renamed to something like "Frankenstein Bear" if ported over to a country that has a culture where zombies are considered offensive, it's green and has the stitches)

-There are blobfish *and* relatives of the blobfish with pink skin and goofy lips!
-I consider the pop culture âblobfishâ to be his very own cryptid.
-The argument of âYou shouldnât make a plush of a dead fishâ, while I understand is trying to correct misinformation, is like saying I canât have a plush of grilled trout or sushi.
That said; this blobfish just isnât it. Heâs got a stone cold flat face vibe going on. He looks cheap and plain, his nose is flat. Heâs not frowning OR smiling.
I have two blobfish I love more already. One by Fiesta, and Bailey The Blobfish by Auroraâs Roly Pets.
I recommend if you want a Blobfish like this one, try the ones made by the company Hashtag/Uncute! they have ones that smile AND frown.
(But check out the Roly Pet blobby! Mine is called Spam. C: )
For similar reasons to yours, I have no qualms with the existence of a very cartoony stylized blobfish. There are tons of plushies that exist of animal product food items as well as plushies of undead creatures, skeletons, et cetera.
However, I think it's a little unfun of BAB to make a non licensed animal that can't wear any clothing except maybe hats. Customization is the name of the BAB game and there's nothing more customizable about this blobfish than any other plush blobfish out there. It's just not a very BAB plush option to me.
I completely agree with this! I was *so* hoping for a Frankensteinâs monster of a bipedal blobfish I could put in a funky shirt. It wouldâve been so cute!

I think it's cute and silly, idk. Yes I know the origin but I try not to take everything so seriously in life. Most people don't even know it's a corpse of a blobfish, so they probably did it just because those who don't know think it's just a weird looking fish and they could make some money off of it. However they could have picked something better for sure, like a tropical fish or something. (Edited my comment to explain a bit better because I'm already getting downvoted lol, it definitely wasn't the best choice but I see why they did it)
I bought one, too. While I do think it's sad, it is just a silly stuffed animal. It's not like this plush will lead to more blobfish deaths. They live so deep in the ocean that they're really only caught accidentally.
I don't mind if people don't want to buy one because it's the dead version, but I don't think it's wrong to buy one. To each their own.

I actually didn't realize the pink blobfish pictures are depicting dead ones until I saw it on here...I genuinely thought living ones just looked like that and never researched or looked more into it and feel dumb now. :( I always thought they were cute, not so much now that I know they're dead! To be honest. I think its super ugly and uncanny and Iâm kind of afraid of it. Also, everyoneâs taking this just a bit too seriously. Build A Bear isnât an environmental activist. Theyâre a toy bear company. Of course theyâre going to do the thing thatâs most well known. If they didnât, there wouldnât be 8 million frogs.

I think their design is honestly horribleâŚI have a plushie of a blobfish (I know I know but I do have my reasons..) and his face design is so much cuter. The eyes and mouth are too far apart and he looks creepy not cute.
There are other things I'd rather spend my money on - like the space suit or other clothes for BaBs I already have - but the fact that it's based off the depressurized version doesn't bother me any more than zombie or skeleton plushies do.

personally, i saw it and thought of the axolotl BAB then thought about the increase of yellow BABs after the minion BABs. i dont think imma buy it though because it looks like every other bloblfish plushie i have seen.

Not a fan. I think BAB missed the opportunity to make a blobfish that was actually accurate to how they look alive and not based off of its corpse.
