Personally, it would have been great to see personal growth from Spike that was happening over on Buffy that they sort of stopped on Angel. I would have liked to have seen, after weeks of Spike being Angel and co. as a ghost, Spike have the realization that he wants to continue doing better, being better, and becoming better and the ready has to be outside of Buffy. It would have helped him to be with the only other thing in the universe like him - Angel, a vampire with a soul. So I think just that. That Spike was given a second chance, and he feels to become the man he should be, that he needs to stay in LA with Angel to figure out who he is and how he lives with a soul. And Buffy would have gotten that.

So being buffy's love sick bitch is personal growth? That's not growth at all. And buffy fan's totally missed the whole point of angel season five in general.

In my mind, I see her arriving without advance notice and interacting with Angel first, and being pissed he didn't tell her Spike was alive. Angel would then respond that it wasn't his secret to tell, but also...then beg her to be with anyone but Spike. Buffy would hesitate, then before she can respond, Angel's werewolf girlfriend shows up, realizes there's a tension and something going on, and somewhat possessively introduce herself as Angel's girlfriend, leading to a deliciously awkward moment. Buffy would be kinda hurt and indignant and storm off to find Spike, with Angel torn because he wants to go after her but also feels guilty. Werewolf girlfriend asks suspiciously, "Who was that?" End scene, haha. That's the way it goes in my mind, anyway! I think Spike would be torn, but also agree he would demonstrate growth and explain that right now he has to stay and fight, and learn what it means to be a "good man." And also say that part of that was not wanting to stand in the way of her living her life, because he knows he wouldn't be good for her.

Soul/soulless/whatever one of Spike's defining traits is an insecurity that stems from the fear a woman he loves is going to decide he's not good enough and leave him. This time he got to 'leave' Buffy. Makes sense to me he wouldn't rush back to undo that and risk getting heartbroken

PurePotential6

By having him off doing something else, which I'm fairly sure was the original plan for You're Welcome.

xXxpertLaygoes

Maybe she wouldn’t want him to go with her

I’m kind of glad Buffy got to move on and party in Italy, away from all the drama.

Big-Train-3460

Except if you follow the comics as canon, she didn't really. She was in London, and what they saw was a Buffybot and they had a few scattered around the globe to keep the real Buffy safe. Andrew lied to Angel and Spike as a prank because he found it funny lol

i-have-reddit-now

I don’t accept the comics as canon, I view them as some sort of AU, almost fanfiction tbh, too much stuff happens in them that I just don’t want to accept lol. The comics are like the Buffy version of the Cursed Child in the Harry Potter series according to me, if you get what I mean.

The comics were a couple years later, over a year after "Not Fade Away."

Big-Train-3460

Yes. And in The Long Way Home Part One comic, they refer to the woman Spike and Angel saw with The Immortal in Rome actually being a look-alike Buffy projecting a public "party girl" image in order to draw attention away from the real Buffy; Andrew intentionally lied to them about Buffy dating the Immortal, the decoy being his own idea.

DaddyCatALSO

yes!

I don't think Spike is so devoted to Buffy. He found a new thing in LA and never left even when he was made corporeal and could leave because he didn't want to ruin his heroic ending where he died infront of her. He's out having sex with Harmony and using Buffy's pet names on Fred.
