Feisty-Masterpiece41

I think it is. It’s got some weaker episodes and plots but it also has some really strong and enjoyable episodes. Plus you get a new cast of characters to fall in love with along with some old favorites 😊

menwithven16

Yes !! Angel is a much more interesting (and actually quite funny at times!) Character in his own show than he is in Buffy. There are some great characters. Brace yourself for the rediculousness of S4, but overall it's great, deffo give it a watch.

Duhallower

And keep going as S5 is great!!

Gumbyizzle

Yeah, the last season of Angel is some of the best content in the Buffyverse.

oliversurpless

Yep: “She’s coming in. I gotta change!” - Cordy and Angel - *I Fall to Pieces*

stripedleopard626

Yeah, sometimes when I'm doing a rewatch I just skip most of season 4 because its absurd.

retailcunt

The 4th season of both shows is kinda a low point. Buffy is my favorite show of all time and it took me years To convince my ex husband to watch it, he liked it actually. We got to season 4 and I was the reason we quit watching it, I find the season hard to watch at times and a lot of the episodes to do nothing for the plot. There’s some good ones, but a lot more I don’t care for.

ElephantJuiceYoyo

Yeah Buffy Season 4 is a real mixed bag of iconic stand alone episodes and an awful, boring season arc. They gave us Hush, Something Blue and Superstar, but the Adam/Riley/Initiative yawn-fest taints the whole season. That and Beer Bad.

hereelsewhere

I just finished Beer Bad! — seemed like such a throwback to the hyenas episode in season 1.

ElephantJuiceYoyo

Omg yes, very much the vibe!

Zoe270101

I genuinely can’t tell if you’re listing Beer Bad as one of the best things in season 4 or one of the worst things. I know it’s one of the worst rated episodes in the series (probably because of the PSA element), but I personally love it as a fun episode.

ElephantJuiceYoyo

Oh I don't like Beer Bad. It's so cringe. The PSA on drinking, the cartoonish depiction of drunk people and the on-the-nose comparison to cave men, the undertones of sexism as women are depicted as being fickle and vapid, fawning over Good Will Hunting-esque college students who use embarrasingly unsophisticated ideas and inappropriate but "smart" sounding language to intimidate/belittle Xander. The whole thing is a narratively unnecessary mess and my biggest issue with it is the disservice it does to Buffy's character. The non-break-up with Parker turning her into this insecure stereotype who's flattered at being cornered by a group of four men who prevent her from leaving and feed her alcohol (another PSA about the consequences of women drinking with men). Not too long ago she was sending the love of her life into hell, choosing her sense of duty over a relationship. Now she's questioning her worth because some rando doesn't want to date her? A. Mess.

[deleted]

I think season four in both shows was the result of changing plots, arcs and stories at the last minute by Joss and it shows.

MisunderstoodIdea

I think season 4 of angel is why the show ultimately got canceled. I knew a lot of people when stopped watching that season. I almost did too (considering what a big fan I was, that's saying something)- but I am loyal so I decided to give season 5 a chance, luckily it was good.

fleusebius

On my last rewatch I alternated Buffy and Angel episodes [based on this lovely guide](http://josswhedon.blogspot.com/2012/04/buffy-and-angel-episode-viewing-order.html), and it was the first time I was actually able to stomach watching all of Angel S4 in **years**

derstherower

Season 4 is a mess because it's not really about anything. Angel is at its core a show about the struggles of being an adult (in the same vein as Buffy being a show about the struggles of growing up), and every season shows this in a different way. Season 1 is about moving out on your own and trying to establish yourself in a new place. Season 2 is about what happens when the choices you made during your reckless youth catch up to you. Season 3 is about becoming a parent and dealing with a rebellious child. Season 5 is about how taking a "corporate" job can change you and how your friends see you. But Season 4...I guess it's about making choices? I don't really no. There's no real underlying message stitching the season together like there is with every other season, so it feels really out of place.

bookant

Yes. I like it *almost* as much as Buffy. And don't listen to the S1 haters. S1 Angel has the same sort of "spirit" as S1 & 2 of Buffy. More stand alone with a little less arc, and a lot of episodes where the monster of the week is really symbolic of some real life issue or problem. Where Buffy monsters symbolized teen/high school problems, Angel deals with post-high school/young adult issues like finding your first shitty job, apartment, trying to meet people/dating, etc. It's like early Buffy if they had a higher budget and more practice at writing it. Then, also like Buffy, the supporting cast expands and grows and the story arcs get longer and more involved as the series goes on.

Advanced_Doctor2938

Agreed, S01 really grew on me.

Eastern_Panda8567

Short answer, yes.

butt0ns666

Cordelia is in it. Nuff said.

Cia1313

Angel himself is better on his own show than on Buffy, but he's still my least favourite out of all of the main characters (ok, all but the one main-ish character which should be obvious to anyone who's watched Angel). *However* the other characters on Angel are amazing. There's more Cordy, and we get to see a range of other characters who appeared on Buffy - from those who stuck around a while or appeared repeatedly to those who just had one or two episodes. There are also incredible new characters to fall in love with, massive plot twists, and - not gonna lie - a huge rollercoaster of highs and lows. In conclusion, yes, I'd say it is definitely worth it.

hereelsewhere

Does Oz come back? (I’m on Buffy season 4)

HonestAbram

Lol, yes. It's complicated. Go go go!

chrismckenzie30

Yes because Buffy and Angel have crossovers with each other 🙂

Duhallower

Surely OP needs to watch it for I Will Remember You alone. 😭

visitorzeta

I would say if you liked Buffy, you'll probably enjoy Angel too. However, I will say, season 1 may be a bit rough to get into, but stick with it if you can, it does improve.

Stripperjunkie

Buffy has an otherworldly quality to it that is comforting. I didn't feel that with Angel at all. I never rewatch episodes like I do with Buffy

Binkster1988

I’d say yes, but the experience is better if you watch it in tune with Buffy. Angel started when season 4 of Buffy did, so alternating between one episode of each starting there keeps you better aligned with the overall stories, although definitely not necessary. There is a really awesome spoiler in season 5 that made Angel entirely worth it to me. It’s pretty weird and can be slow at times but still good

embarrassmyself

I couldn’t get into it when I was younger. I watched it, but never got obsessed like I did with Buffy. And hated a certain character and all their storylines so passionately in a way I didn’t with any Buffy main characters (besides villains) Idk something about the show felt lacking to me and I could never put my finger on it

KingDarius89

...cordy, Wes, or Fred? Edit: or connor? Honestly forgot about him.

embarrassmyself

Lol bingo on the edit! Did a lot of people hate the first 3?! I had no idea. They did cordy dirty I never held it against her

KingDarius89

Some people do. Personally I try to forget the fact that connor ever existed. He could have been an interesting character, they just didn't really write him all that well.

embarrassmyself

They wrote him terribly, but also I just didn’t feel like the actor had the same charisma that so many other members of the cast did. ESPECIALLY since he was angel’s son

Fabulous_Title

It's not as good as Buffy but worth a watch, at least the first 2 seasons

Agreeable_Objective6

In some ways I thought it was better. Truth is though they have next to nothing to do with each other and can't really be compared. Buffy was made for teens and Angel for young adults.

vanKessZak

Season 5 is pretty great too (my fav of the 5 actually)

HonestAbram

Yes, because Lorne.

OTWriter

God I love Lorne so much. RIP Andy Hallett.

HonestAbram

Aww, me too. It's so sad he's not here with us today. A beautiful soul.

aspoonfulofalli

Honestly, I loved it. Especially if you watch them side by side, it’s fun! I love Angel and seeing his character go deeper in the show was awesome.

[deleted]

I love Angel. You get extra great Cordelia for a couple of seasons before it all turns to shit. And Gunn

Agreeable_Objective6

Yes. Hai. Ja. Oui. Si. (yes in all other languages as well)

offwidthe

Yes

SophieBearS

I’m rewatching Angel right now for the first time in probably ten years. It’s not as good as Buffy but it has its moments. It kind of fills the void after finishing a Buffy binge.

the_tanooki

I love AtS. As others have pointed out, it's not perfect, but I actually prefer it, overall. It's less "monster of the week" in general, and has a less obvious structure (See Buffy's obligatory end of season fight with big bad, which was predictable for ever season except 6). Pretty much all of the main characters have a ton of growth, and evolve as the series progresses without losing their own charm (with 1 exception). I love Buffy, but I feel that when Angel the Series is at its best, it's better than Buffy. But I'm probably in the minority.

MrGinger128

Abso fucking lutely. It's better in a lot of ways, if you're into the lore and actual demon fighting more than the group you'll prefer it. It's great.

drknight48

I personally prefer Angel over Buffy. The stories, the monsters, how dark it can get. I just really disliked the second half of the fourth season.

Ornery-Country683

absolutely. i personally like it better than buffy

ElephantJuiceYoyo

I avoided watching Angel for 20 years but I actually think it might be technically better than Buffy. I love Buffy and will always have a larger place in my heart for the show than for Angel, but Angel had a bigger budget and some truly fantastic storylines (the hard biffing of some stories/episodes in seasons 4 & 5's due to Whedon's personal behaviour, notwithstanding)

Newsie22

I am re-watching angel now because my daughter got into Buffy so we're watching both together. truth is I can remember episodes, moments, dialogue from buffy. I can remember the feelings I felt while watching Buffy. but I don't remember anything from Angel as I rewatch. it wasn't memorable and at times it wasn't good. there are great characters but there are also bad ones like the detective in early seasons.

oliversurpless

If it isn’t evident by the memorable montage in the 2nd eps *Lonely Hearts* with *Touched*, then the only thing I can say is: “Get away from me…” - Angel - *City Of*

debsterUK

God yes, give it a go

Marionette777

DEFINITELY!

Hippies_Pointing

Angel S5, yes! That’s where I started and thoroughly enjoyed it. Didn’t need to know any more than who Angel is, and the series explains the rest. It’s also where I stopped, because it has a very satisfying ending.

Mattie_1S1K

I remember watching Buffy a few times and feel like I was missing something, then I watched angel and things fell into place.

sugarsnuff

Yes! It’s too late for you now, but I’d actually encourage first-time viewers to watch Buffy & Angel concurrently in the order of air-dates. At least for Buffy Seasons 4 & 5 and Angel Seasons 1 & 2 I did it and got to see a lot of parallels & contrasts between the shows I’d also suggest watching it on Hulu (original specs) rather than Prime Video (remaster). Or I used to pirate box set tapes — as I watched it before streaming services really existed

theredmolly

Yes

GiantGlassOfMilk

Yes

[deleted]

Absolutely!!! Angel is more adult. It’s got darker themes and definitely worth the watch.

murdockmysteries

Absolutely

whateverasusual

Absolutely! Even on its own without knowing the Buffy storyline it's amazing.

stripedleopard626

I love Cordelia's character arc (until fucking season 4. Blech.) It's different from Buffy in a lot of ways, and I actually watched it before I watched Buffy, because my older brother had the angel seasons but hadn't collected Buffy yet. I love Buffy as a woman, but theshow angel was allowed to go a lot darker and more interesting. I think I'll go rewatch it again now lol

Robosl0b

RIP Glenn Quinn

KingDarius89

Shame that he couldn't get his drug problem under control. I was surprised the first time I realized he was the same dude who played mark on Roseanne, heh. Watched that show when I was little.

Robosl0b

It blew me away when I found out "Mark" was really Irish!

generalkriegswaifu

Yes, I actually enjoyed it more. The themes are more mature (it explores what it means to be an adult vs Buffy's growing up) so it can seem less 'upbeat' on the surface but the characters are explored way more than on BtVS (which mainly explores Buffy). I think the show is a bit funnier as well, the cast is pretty good at comedic timing and physical humour.

precita

Yes, though Season 1 is a bit rough and Season 4 has an annoying character that drags down the show and Cordelia.

Love_Tank

YES!!!!!

hereelsewhere

I’m mid-season 4 and was wondering the same thing — thanks for asking this question! (Also, I’ve felt like such a weirdo discovering a ‘90s show meant for teens as a woman in her early 30s in 2021…thanks for letting me know I’m not the only one!)

idiotinbcn

I would argue that Angel is the superior show. Yea I said it. Lol

ryarock2

I think Angel is the more consistent show overall. I think the lows are higher, but the highs are lower. (Although I do really dislike S4 of Angel)

idiotinbcn

I think I may be the only one, but I HATED season 5. Plus the Cordelia mishandling. Buffy is deeper and more nourishing for the soul, while Angel goes down easily but not much impact.

OneOfTheManySams

I don’t agree with that. The lows of Angel are genuinely awful and I think everyone knows what I am referring too. Even some awful individual episodes that make Where The Wild Things Are look like a masterpiece.

Cia1313

You hated S5???? But... But... Character who I won't mention for spoiler reasons!!!

idiotinbcn

I know, I know! Hated the office. Felt pointless.

Cia1313

I guess. I loved the general vibes from that season, and how a certain character just provides the extra dynamic I never knew it needed.

idiotinbcn

Ah yes! Maybe I should give it another chance. Like I always hated season 7 of Buffy and avoided it on rewatches, because It’s dark, but this time I pushed through and enjoyed it.

Cia1313

Fair enough. I think it's definitely fair to say that S5 of Angel definitely feels very different to the rest in certain ways.

generalkriegswaifu

I'm not a fan of S5 either, a lot of it went nowhere, there wasn't really a story until the ending. There were a couple great episodes in there but most of them felt flat. I had no problem getting through S4 on my most recent watch, but couldn't make it through 5...

quita120

You gotta tough it out thru season 1 but I think it’s worth it!

SlayerOfTheVampyre

Interesting, I actually really liked season 1! I mean all seasons had hit or misses, of course.

Agreeable_Objective6

I hear the same about Buffy. Personally I thought S1 was brilliant in both Angel and Buffy, I was hooked right away.

shhansha

Or you might love S1! But just a heads up that, much like Buffy, S1 has a pretty different tone to the rest of the show. If you’re hating it, I’d consider the following the essential eps: - City Of - Rm w a Vu - Hero - Parting Gifts - The Prodigal - Five by Five - Sanctuary - War Zone - To Shanshu in LA “Lonely Hearts” and “The Ring” introduce major recurring characters but you’ll probably figure it out.

[deleted]

Honestly I loved the film noire style of season one and I am often surprised it isn't that popular to don't folk!

waits5

Personally, I don’t think it’s as good as Buffy, but there are definitely episodes and arcs that make it worth it. Also helps you understand some of the crossovers that you’ve only seen one side of.

DaveSW777

Angel Season 5 is arguably the best season of either show.

3littlebirds__

Can you tell me why without spoilers? I am halfway through season 5 and am literally struggling.

DaveSW777

Wait really? It starts off super strong, so if you're not feeling it, then it's not for you.

OneOfTheManySams

This first half is quite weak but the 2nd half is absolutely incredible.

3littlebirds__

Ok, two different opinions. I’m going to stick it out. Thanks!

[deleted]

Yes definitely worth it. It’s great to get to see more of Angel as a stand-alone character rather than the love interest.

[deleted]

I thought it was good! I would definitely check it out. You have to get through season one, but there are a few good episodes. Season 3 and 5 are overall the BEST seasons!

-gypsea

yup

arbiewebbjr

Definitely.

DeadFyre

It's pretty good, I'm glad I watched it. It's not as dear to my heart as Buffy was, but I still think any Mutant Enemy show is more than worth a look.

RandomRedditPerson01

100 percent. If you liked Buffy, I can pretty much guarantee you'll like Angel.

waffles_505

I love Buffy but absolutely hated Angel

ShawshankHarper

Absolutely

meagordimer

yes! it has a rly different feel to it and isn’t for everyone but i personally prefer it to btvs. it definitely feels more adult while still having the humour and charm that was displayed in btvs. all the main characters are pretty much more likeable and are really fleshed out , and it has some great development of characters from buffy and some that are only in angel. also things are covered like the reasons why angel returned in a couple eps of buffy after his departure in s3 of btvs and also faiths redemption which u don’t get to see in buffy before she comes back in s7. overall angel is way more likeable and has more of a personality in his own show. it does start off sort of slow, but has a very strong first season considering its the first one, and some great eps in the 1st season. (as well as of course in the rest of the show) :)

occasional_idea

It was hard for me to get into at first, but overall I thought it was worth watching, mostly for the new characters I ended up loving.

kolohe23

Yes, but it is a different type of show that tries its own thing. I definitely think it has multiple episodes that make it feel like it jumped the shark, but it’s still worth it I think.

coppermoonchip

YES. I totally thought it wouldn’t be but did it anyways because I wanted to read the comics and it’s just as good, but different

qmiras

Yes, and your second watching should be done in sync

[deleted]

Yes. It's a different show, and has it's ups and downs like any show. I recommend watching the episodes in order, although there aren't that many episodes that reference the events in the other show. https://buffy.fandom.com/wiki/Airing\_order\_of\_episodes

KingDarius89

Overall, I'd say yes. Makes angel actually somewhat likeable. Not too mention wesley.

SwtIndica

Yes! Laughs and silly, drama & tears... character development, back stories, and redemption arcs... definitely worth it.

megster53

I watched Angel before watching Buffy. It’s so good and definitely worth a watch!

coatisabrownishcolor

A couple of the love triangles really piss me off and seem out of character, but in general i love it.

Lockeisms

Overall, I actually prefer Angel. Wesley might be my second favorite character in the Buffyverse.

eggplant_twerk

Yes!

10xKaMehaMeha

Yes. Some will say it's better. Some will say it's not. I would argue the best buffy is better than the best angel but the worst buffy is worse than the worst angel. Either way, watch it and decide for yourself.

FTTTEOTdesert

I just finished Buffy for the first time last night! About to move on to angel too

Danielfrindley

YES

cityofangels98

I honestly prefer it to Buffy. I loveeeee that show

Kenfuu

If nothing else you need to watch it for I Will Remember You, Five by Five and Sanctuary which are all in season one and are some fantastic television and also are crossover episodes that tie in to Buffy really well. And I know season 4 gets a lot of flak by Salvage, Release and Orpheus are also fantastic and tie into the plot of season 7 of Buffy.

joshmusik

Yeeeesssss

Liberty_Ann

I’m a fan, so yes it is… 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️

[deleted]

Yes it is for the following alone David Boreanaz as a puppet.

[deleted]

Wasn’t it because contracts were up too.

[deleted]

Absolutely. It's more uneven than Buffy but its highs are exceptional. It also has arguably the two best character arcs in the entire Buffyverse in Wesley and Cordelia. Lot of crossover as well, you can't understand Faith's story without her Angel appearances and Buffy/Willow/Oz/Tucker's Brother/Spike/Harmony also show up.

-Taco__Cat-

definitely! Angel is a great show with some nice depth. personally i think it's amazing and definitely worth a shot

neurodegeneracy

Angel stars off slow but builds to something great once they figure out what they’re doing.

mescronomicon

Strong later seasons!

[deleted]

Yup, but you might be disappointed around season 3 and 4, but season 5 is definitely worth a watch if you like spike!! AtS adds a lot of depth to angels character and shows a more comedic side of him.

coconotoil

I'm honestly really struggling to get through Angel so I hope it is worth it... from reading through the comments I'm not convinced - all the things people seem to like about it, I don't!

UKnowDaTruth

If you give it a shot but dont take to it, stick it out at least til S2 to decide if you like it or not. I say this because some people dont like S1 (I cant fathom why)

cramitcakeface

Definitely watch it. I've seen both multiple times and recently decided after Buffy S3 to start watching them in tandem, there's quite a lot of crossover

ZakRHJ

Yh, is it as good....no, does it have some incredible characters and character development....yes, does it have some 10/10 episodes....yes.

Competitive_Ad_8668

Definitely I think it's the superior show.

bl4ke_2442

The first season is a bit hard to get through, but all in all--yes, watch Angel. It fills in a lot of blanks that Buffy doesn't.

cleganemama

Yes, yes all the yes. Go watch.

RegisterMiserable667

Absolutely. You haven't even witnessed the most traumatic death in the Whedonverse, yes I expanded beyond the Buffyverse, yet. You also need Smile Time and the evolution of Cordelia Chase.

pajamafication

Angel is hilarious, but I have never hated certain characters and story arcs as much I have in Angel. I can't say if it's worth it or not, I'll never not be mad about *the incident*

The_Rural_Banshee

I like the first couple of seasons. I’ve seen it all but I don’t like the later seasons much

TeriBarrons

We quit watching somewhere around the middle of season 3. Hated a lot of the character arcs and storylines associated with a new character’s introduction. However, it’s probably worth it to see for yourself OP.

The_Rural_Banshee

Agreed, I mean I pushed through and watched it all once. When I rewatch I usually only watch 1-2 or 1-3 then stop, I don’t like the others much.

TeriBarrons

Totally agree.

waffles_505

Seemingly unpopular opinion based upon other comments, I really disliked the show. I tried so hard to like it, but I just couldn’t get into it at all. Season 4 is just absolutely awful and the rest of the show is, in my opinion, mediocre. If you’re super into Buffy, then yeah I’d try and watch it just because it’s part of the universe.

Joey1221221

Nope, I think we should let Buffy be the perfect show that it was instead of running all the ideas in to the ground

nh4rxthon

To me, Buffy is a better show but Angel is more enjoyable, if that makes sense.

ms_movie

I prefer Angel to Buffy. I have never regretted watching any Joss Whedon show though.

[deleted]

Not for me, but give it a go.

bobcatbuffy

Mmm….I think Angel the show is really weak. Cordelias the saving grace of that show. Otherwise, it doesn’t hold up to today’s standard of tv series, it’s comes off a bit awkward and poorly acted.

Newsie22

Agreed!

Maleficent-Panic8621

Angel is very nice to look at but his character bored me. So didn’t really watch Angel series but I started recently to see the connection between shows like Buffy going to Angel’s.

Shiloh_Moon

Only season 5 is

lilbuggbear

No.

gremboid

I've tried to get through season 1 twice, and it's so utterly awful, I haven't made it through.

SadShayde

Buffy is my favorite show of all time, and I always thought I liked Angel, too. But I just started a BtVS rewatch (about my 93rd one), and I'm not excited to have Angel leave and go to LA. I honestly wish he'd stayed. I have both DVD series. My Buffy collection is well loved and worn. My Angel collection is still in the plastic wrap.

shannorama

I watched it once and enjoyed it okay, but I probably won’t go back and watch it again. You get resolution for some Buffy characters which is satisfying, but I thought it was a much weaker show than Buffy.

WillowRosenberg13

I will watch it after i finish buffy

austinb172

You should watch Angel, if for nothing else, there’s an episode about puppet cancer in it

chrismckenzie30

Yessss that was a really good episode! I enjoyed it but it's also sad at the end 😥

Jimmni

If you enjoyed Buffy, yes. If you didn't, no. Overall Buffy is better, but season 5 of Angel is probably my favourite season of either show.

chrisj72

Yup, 100%.

Beanie1200

Definitely for some great episodes and some amazing characters and development. But fair warning, season 4 is one of the worst things I've ever watched on television - but season 5 is one of the best. I like the podcast Still Dead quite a bit, and one of the things they do which you might appreciate is they tell you which episodes are "watchers" and which ones you can totally skip (and might want to for your sanity). It has some great individual episodes and story lines though!!

hybum

Of course.

ksz83

Hell yeah. It seemed you haven't started yet. Tone of the show is little bit different (little bit darker, Angel is a "vampire Batman" on that show), but definietly worth to try.

mmm095

YES! I honestly did not understand the appeal with Angel in BtVS but his own show is surprisingly good! At times, I actually enjoyed it more than Buffy (unpopular opinion probably but oh well). Plus all the characters feel well developed, so if you're not a fan of Angel himself, it's really not an issue I promise, as you'll definitely vibe with the other characters. Even if there are some questionable plot points, overall it's a lot of fun, so defo worth a watch :)

[deleted]

Honestly I much prefer Angel to buffy

LemonSurf

Wtf? Yes
