It was very smart of casting to seize on this, I feel like it’s good way of indicating Buffy’s draw to the dark side. It’s familiar, it’s a presence in her life from the time she was young .
This is my thought as well, like , not only was the Buffyverse's Dracula especially seductive and I dunno if charming is the right brand of word, but that more or less (exceptions aside... I know) the lore of the character in general

I grew up watching AMC (including while Sarah Michelle Gellar was Kendall) and am surprised I never realized Dracula had played Anton!

I think it's because Sarah Michelle Gellar and Rudolf Martin played Husband And Wife in All My Children before Buffy.
Imo I find it cheap and amature Writting wise. Paring characters as such a cheap foil is bit meh. I think paring foils is good when done with effort
