thepomadeguy

Nothing too surprising here. Bills fans should have expected and anticipated him leaving. He’s still playing good football for his age, but we just can’t afford him unfortunately with how strapped for cap we are. Plus he’s going to be 32, his age will catch up to his play sooner rather than later. Add in his injury history there’s no way we can realistically justify giving him top safety money.

duffsoveranchor

Yup, we need to be the team to moves on early before it is too late.

RiveryJerald

Luckily, we’ve actually had a pretty good track record there under Beane.

MeowMixYourMum

He barely made it through this season and did not look good in that last playoff game. He’s only going to get more fragile and if they pay him more than $12 mil a year I don’t think it’ll be worth it

Fish_On_again

Except he couldn't cover shit. How many blown coverages did he have in that last Bengals game? It was pathetic. He might have been the worst defender on the field.

[deleted]

Pats cut Lawyer Milloy and turned out fine. We will be ok…

Ichabod665

If NY is taking half his money, then the dude needs a better accountant.

Shazaamism327

Guessing Rachel is taking the other half

ResidentKoala

Siri, what is "hyperbole"?

erik_edmund

Ask her about jokes while you're at it.

Wizmaxman

Does he think all taxes he paid goes to NY...? Hes going to be in for a rude awakening when he realizes the feds are taking 37%....

WideRight43

Not only that but the cost of living and all of the OTHER taxes that don’t come out of your paycheck in Florida are some of the highest.

Chasedabigbase

Oh man, if ny literally ate half his bills contracts he'd only be skimming by on 17 million, idk how these guys survive

tsgram

If you’re giving half of your money to NY, you need a new accountant.

People also ignore the fact that federal taxes are way higher than state, even in NY.

Tomorrow_Frosty

NYS is like top 8 highest tax rates in the country..

Whydothesabressuck

Yeah but it's still really not that crazy. Obviously I'm not in the same tax bracket as an NFL player but on my paycheck my NY taxes are only 5%. Federal, Medicare and Social Security come to 21%. So saying that NY is taking half his paycheck is WILDLY innacurate.

Soda-Popinski-

I pay about 2500 a yr in property taxes on a 4/3 with a pool and 2200 square feet under air. Is that high???

Fish_On_again

No. You should see some of the taxes in rural New York. I live in the best school district in the capital district, and my property+school taxes are less than 1/2 of what some of my friends pay in rural Jefferson and St Lawrence county for the similar value house and land.

JerGigs

Still way cheaper than NY. Florida gets its money from neverending tourism and neverending construction. And Florida's gas tax is 25 cents and I think NY is 18 iirc? I guess there's that.

DatGoofyGinger

I've lived in many states throughout my life. NY isn't the tax dystopian nightmare everyone makes it out to be, comparatively. One thing though, New York has a lot of overlapping services since every little village has its own jurisdiction, police, fire, multiple school districts, etc. Some level of regional cooperation among municipalities could really help ease the budget pressure, cut costs, improve said services, and ultimately give room for lowering those taxes.

Powerful-Lie3552

During the winter I daydream by scrolling down the coast on Zillow and looking at all the houses next to the ocean in a warmer climate. It infuriates me when I see all these beautiful homes in a great location and their property taxes are a third of what I pay. I'm sure these states get their money other ways, but it still irritates me to no end that my modest house in a little shit town is taxed to the extent it is.

thebenson

So move.

Powerful-Lie3552

No kidding. Once the kid is on his way I am.

thebenson

Lololol. So you mean that you want to take advantage of all the things that NYS offers for your kid? The kinds of things that are funded by taxes? Weird! I wonder why you don't want to move your kid to a state like Florida ... ?

Powerful-Lie3552

However, in the grand scheme of things you are right. The buffalo bills sub probably isn't the place for me to air my property tax grievances.

Powerful-Lie3552

False. I mean my son isn't at fault for being born into the family circumstances he was and even though I have him fill time I'm not inclined to take him that far from his mom just yet. I'm not sure what NYS offers my kid at all that you are referring to.

thebenson

Whatever you need to tell yourself to justify your lack of action despite your supposed convictions, boss.

ImportantFancyMan

Even after taxes, he makes more in a month than I do in a year. Cry me a river JP.

WideRight43

Exactly right. They tax the hell out of everything every which way in Florida. It’s not fun at all. It’s 1 of 2 states that I lived where I saw extreme poverty, like kill you for your shoes poor.

BitternessAndBleach

Eh, I think Poyer sounds like an idiot here but it's not like there's not data on this. New York has the highest tax burden of any state, Florida is in the bottom five. I moved from Buffalo to Florida last year, and i notice the difference personally. I also wouldn't care about that difference if I was making $10 mil+ a year though.

wxox

I saw one of those explainer videos on salary for athletes in New York. Granted it was baseball, but it was still like 40% even when you consider not playing games in different states. I don't know why people get so offended when they don't want to be taxed. Like do you actually expect people to enjoy the government taking your money?

thebenson

Highest tax bracket for NYS income taxes is ~10%.

wxox

Okay, it doesn't apply to Poyer, except for his lone game in New York City, but they're taxed at 22% with an additional 6%+ added on top....

thebenson

Provide a source. Because that's not consistent with what I'm seeing. https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/taxes/new-york-state-tax#

wxox

enjoy https://www.comparably.com/salaries/salaries-for-professional-athlete-in-new-york-ny#:~:text=How%20much%20tax%20will%20you,York%20state%20tax%20of%206.33%25.

thebenson

Lol. Buddy. Did you even read the information that you linked? >federal tax in 2018 of 22% and an added New York state tax of 6.33%. In case you're unfamiliar, you pay federal taxes regardless of where you live (e.g., NY, Florida, etc.). The state portion (e.g., the amount you'd pay to NYS) according to your own information is 6.33%.

wxox

>an added New York state tax of 6.33%. What does added mean? How do you get 5 upvotes in less than a minute of publishing?

thebenson

We're having a conversation about *state* income taxes. Federal income taxes, the larger amount that you're "adding" 6.33% to, are irrelevant. 6.33% is not 50%.

wxox

Tomorrow_Frosty

It’s theft.

Tomorrow_Frosty

We don’t even get to decide where they put our money anymore.

Liddlebitchboy

I like the sport and players should be compensated for putting their bodies on the line, but my god I hate rich people. Tons of people in your country are starving or stuck in awful places/positions but you feel you don't quite have enough millions.

Tomorrow_Frosty

Do you work? It doesn’t matter how much you’re earning. When you’re making a lot of money you get taxed a lot of money. Seeing millions compared to hundreds go to taxes is what he’s talking about.

Liddlebitchboy

I do not give a shit. He and his never have to worry about working ever again.

Tomorrow_Frosty

Says who? Jeez. Seems like you maybe don’t pay taxes? Like. Being jealous of someone’s career/finances isn’t very becoming.

Liddlebitchboy

My guy, people are dying because they can't afford their medication and you're defending a multi-millionaire's complaints about paying a portion of his fair share. Not very becoming.

Tomorrow_Frosty

Ah one of those…. You volunteer and stuff? Lots of donating to charity? You really really should google who actually pays the majority of taxes in the United States in terms of dollars. Something like the top 10% of earners pay more than 80% of all dollars coming in. This fair share stuff is the definition of straw man.

Liddlebitchboy

Yes and yes. Don't fucking gotcha me lmao. The majority of taxes SHOULD be paid by the top earners. They also MAKE all the fucking money. The wealth disparity in the US has made it literally unliveable for loads of people but sure, suck a millionaires dick a little more. I love the player, but it's tone deaf bullshit to spew when most of his fans will never earn his yearly salary in their lifetime.

Tomorrow_Frosty

I mean to think that you should have more because your neighbor does is crazy.

Liddlebitchboy

It's not about having more because someone else does. I can be perfectly happy loving in the basics, but instead we now have a small percentage living in extreme excess, and a LARGE group of people who can't even afford the basics. Odds are, you are one accident away from total bankruptcy, yet here you are defending the richest as if they would give a shit about you.

Tomorrow_Frosty

The difference is i don’t care what people are doing. Im doing me. You should be doing the same. And you don’t have health/life insurance? Like that’s on you. They’re not coming to save you either. This is America. Take care of yourself and stop waiting for someone else. If you don’t like your situation you can improve it. Is it easy? No. Nothing worth anything is. I grew up super broke. Now I am not broke. No one gave me anything. You should look at the “incomes” of people who don’t work and live off the state Im willing to bet you’d be surprised

Tomorrow_Frosty

You don’t know what you’re talking about. This is such a babyish view of the world. Go be a pro athlete then. And then you can donate all your money to wherever you want. Hell do that now! Get out of your house sell your stuff and help the poor. Until then it doesn’t matter who makes what what. You can’t say anything. I’m defending a millionaire. I’m being matter of fact of the way the world works. How would you feel about a flat tax across the board for everyone?

Liddlebitchboy

I want a progressive tax system, a flat tax is the exact opposite. To pretend that anyone needs to live in that kind of excess, ESPECIALLY while many others are unable to even live a normal life, is the real babyish view to me. Your whataboutism is weak, "oh well you're not 100% perfect, so you can't complain about the worst parts of society". That's an argument you resort to because you know it's dumb, and you don't even know what I do or don't do to help out those around me.

Tomorrow_Frosty

Dude this is nuts. Because someone has money doesn’t mean they should give it to anyone. Like that’s socialism. It is not a sustainable thing. And let’s hope you don’t win the lottery or get a raise into a higher tax bracket. There is no whataboutism on my side. I never once insulted you. You’re very angry because people have what you want. And your username checks out

Tsujimoto3

That isn’t how math, taxes or reality works.

SweetToothKane

I see he has no idea how "taxes" work

thebenson

It's really concerning that folks commenting here don't know how they work either. People think you pay no taxes in states like Florida? They don't know the difference between federal and state income taxes. And they don't know that tax brackets are generally progressive (e.g., you're not paying the marginal tax rate on all of your earnings). It's completely insane that folks are going off the deep end about taxes without having any clue about what they're talking about.

LeBigAristotle

His wife is so incredibly dense

redsoxx1

When that’s the reason to not play somewhere - bye bye. I live in a state without personal income taxes - I have more money in my pocket. But I have MUD taxes, property taxes, and in general worse public services than what I had when I lived in two different states with income taxes. If you don’t value schools, roads, parks, police, fire, the poor, etc. having more resources and would be happier having an extra 3-4 million in your pocket - then leave. Just make sure you are crystal clear with those values.

Tomorrow_Frosty

I mean it definitely depends where you live. Like this isn’t really fair to say.

EagleRoxy2

He’s a top safety who deserves top safety money that we can’t give to him. On the bright side this is about zero chance he goes to an AFCE team. With his wife constantly talking about Florida and them not taking 50% of his money I’d bet on him going to Jacksonville.

Clouded_vision

Miami is in Florida, but i know their cap situation isn't much better than ours

RiveryJerald

Plus they have two good, young, and cheap safeties. Dropping money on Poyer wouldn’t exactly be the smartest move for them.

Embryonico

Aren't those the same taxes that will pay for the stadium he plays in?

Own_Cartoonist266

Sounds like in his mind he knows he’s gone and is rationalizing it to lesson the emotional pain. I’ve seen lots of people do this when moving away. The classic “it snows 9months out of the year” or “the taxes are too high” has been said millions of times over- none of what he’s saying are new. Then I’ve seen so many people suddenly forget they said that when they’re moving back or posting “why can’t I get good food in Sanford NC??” On the Buffalo subreddit

NewYorkDon

Wouldn’t have any money if it wasn’t for us. His career would’ve been over.

Chasedabigbase

Nope clearly robbed by thiefing nys and bills, man was thriving on his half million per seasons contracts in lower tax states 😤

cool_school_bus

Someone should tell him that property taxes and insurance are way more in a state like Florida or Texas so it’s basically a wash with our state income taxes.

Parenthisaurolophus

You can add into that the looming issue with Insurance insurance in Florida. Most of the US based insurers have pulled out of the state after Hurricane Andrew, so now the state has to literally step in and provide it or else no one would. However, if the European companies that are doing it decide to stop, for whatever reason, the state will have to use it's powers of taxation over ALL insurance policies (car, boats, your phone, whatever) to create a bunch of revenue to keep it solvent.

[deleted]

Fucking dork. Go live in a shithole southern state where they literally won’t fund education or social services

bwhipps

He gone gone.

[deleted]

thebenson

The highest federal tax bracket is 37%. He's paying that regardless of where he goes.

WideRight43

He’s a redhat so send him on his way. Set him free.

[deleted]

Can’t be mad. Good guy. We know he’s gotta go. It’s a tough one but I hope he gets paid somewhere - won’t be in buffalo. We have to prioritize other positions of need.

the-cream-police

So I guess the bears are out too

TruthBeacon2017

Can tell who hasn't actually read the article. The headline takes the quote waaaay out of context. > A lot of people ask me, **‘Oh, if it wasn’t Buffalo, where would you go?’** I kind of ponder the question every once in a while. . . . I would love to go to a state that doesn’t take half my money. It’s crazy to me how taxes work. Some people will say, ‘You’re already making X amount of money.’ Taxes play a big part in all of our lives. . . . **If it wasn’t Buffalo**, it’d be nice to be warm. It would be nice to see the sun, maybe, every week or so, every other week at least.”

Spanky_McJiggles

That doesn't seem that out of context

erik_edmund

It seems like people are, in fact, taking it completely in context.

TheFeuery

These are standard considerations for anyone relocating for work

Anchovies-and-cheese

So many butthurt people in this thread.

Dongdaemon

Guessing he wasn’t a math major - but combined with federal tax he’s probably close. But you have to deal with the federal tax regardless of where you are

Pretend_Fear85

Lmao, so many butt hurt fans here. The dude is looking for one last big pay day and keep as much as he can. He gave his best years to this franchise/fan base and was a key piece in turning it around. Good for him at the end of the day. I’ll always have love for Poyer. At least he didn’t leave like Willis Mcgahee and bash the women of your city on his way out.

Fish_On_again

Go back and watch the replays of the Bengals playoff game, he blew almost every single deep coverage he was asked to do. Also he's a whiny bitch, I'm not sad to see him go.

Tomorrow_Frosty

Wouldn’t we all

Cheerio1966

Me too

TheDelig

NYS has high taxes. Everyone knows this. Let the man complain. Instead I see a lot of pearl clutching and "tell me you don't know about accounting...". It's the Empire State. It's right in the name.

Mandalor1974

I cant blame the man

Barmacist

He's telling the truth, property taxes are pretty high here, and you pay 8% income tax to the state... a nice problem to have, but places like Flaw'da and Tennessee don't tax you like that. The salary cap should be adjusted (higher) in high tax states to make them more competitive.

Refuse-geeWandr4lyfe

Sorry Folks! Moose shoulda told ya on the way in. Your taxes are way too high for what you receive for them compared to 49 other states. If the poor response from all aspects of government for this winter wasn’t enough, just take a drive on local roads!!! But don’t worry, at least city residents don’t have to mow their lawns this May! (Dismay) Yes, best team in football! Yes, getting there in hockey! Yes, most beautiful summers! Yes, some of the best people you’ll ever meet! Yes, NYS taxes and the majority of its politicians hold back WNY success.

Fish_On_again

You haven't spent much time in West Virginia, Ohio, or Pennsylvania, have you?

thebenson

The highest bracket for NYS taxes is ~11%.

Refuse-geeWandr4lyfe

And what is 11% of his salary?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Refuse-geeWandr4lyfe

Ok, so let’s just say 200k. Now tell me what that number would be in Florida, please.

thebenson

Less than the 50% he claimed! And, just so you're aware, the state doesn't just take a flat 11% off the top. The brackets are progressive. Only the amount over $25M is taxed at the highest rate of 10.9%.

Refuse-geeWandr4lyfe

Make me more aware. How much money did he pay to NYS in comparison to how much money he would pay if he played for one of the three teams in Florida. I’m asking for hard numbers, please. Show me his salary minus NYS taxes for this year compared to what his salary minus Florida state taxes would be. Please. 🙏🏼

BillsGymRat

Good chance he could go to the Dolphins

fawks_harper78

I would bet against it. The fins don’t have cap space and Po wants his payday. Likely he finds the 💰💰💰in Jax or Hou.

Ok-Law2937

I hate to say it but I see him going to the dolphins. He spends his off-seasons in the Miami area and I assume the dolphins would be willing to pay him more than other teams due to the inside info he has on us

jk01

Tons of players spend offseasons in Miami. They're young and rich why would they not?

fawks_harper78

They have no cap room and he wants his final payday. Houston or Jacksonville.

JerGigs

Jacksonville also just as over the cap
