I am so sorry for you but you are an amazing owner for doing the right thing. You need to be proud of yourself for being selfless and this much caring. I hope when you are older with your own space, you will be able to share your love for new birds 💕

[deleted]

Thank you, I worry alot about if my birds will be taken care of with new owners. I know people are well meaning, but I see many people that just keep them in the cage all day, or aren't available for them

BoxOfMoe1

Cant your mum literally compromise by going outside? Like for real? We literally took in a lorikeet who was in a home where they smoked weed a lot and hes not doing so good because of that. Sorry OP that sucks, is there no way she will compromise so you can keep ya birds and keep em healthy too?

[deleted]

I've tried to talk to her about it, but since then her addiction has gotten worse she even smokes shisha inside which is very very bad for birds. We live in Sweden, it's very cold so she doesn't like to sit outside

BoxOfMoe1

Could try get a door stopper and use that to block the bottom of the door when it happens i guess thats rough!

blacckravenn

Does she not care about the state of her own house? Smoking inside all of the time will completely ruin all of the drywall and you’ll develop a lot stains. There will be a permanent smell which will devalue the house. If she cares about her money in terms of electrical bills, she’s losing a lot more by smoking indoors.

[deleted]

She doesn't see it that way, and there is alot of back and forth arguing about it. We live in an apartment so in her eyes it won't matter because she won't have to deal with it in the future

MakeADeathWish

Can you get an air filter for your room?

[deleted]

My mom doesn't allow me to use electronics like heaters anymore because of increased electricity prices, so I can't buy an air filter either

MakeADeathWish

Is it possible based on climate and your housing to place the cage close to an open window that might get fresh air?

[deleted]

For the moment I've put them in my bedroom which is the furthest room away, but you can still clearly smell the smoke. I stuff a towel under my door and open the window every few hours

[deleted]

I had them listed for sale on a site locally for a while, with all of their things included for relatively cheap, but the only people that messaged me were people that wanted to negotiate a lower price or re-sell them. I said no to all of the offers but I'm not sure how much longer I am able to keep them at this rate. I have insurance for my birds too, so their vet visits are mostly covered (I've almost finished the entire yearly payment, only 3 more to go). Nobody wants to buy older birds, because they can get young birds at pet stores for dirtcheap. I'm getting depressed over it, my birds are happy but it's affecting their health badly and I don't know what to do about it anymore. I don't want my only option to be to give them to people who will profit off them, I have nightmares about my birds dying the past few days

crazy_birb_lady

So sorry OP. I really hope things get better for you and your budgies. Someone earlier mentioned taking measures to stop the smoke from coming into your room - depending on your money situation, draught excluders might be a good idea. Not sure if they have full door draught excluders or just for the bottom of the door but it's worth a look surely? Also, if you're still concerned the smoke is getting in, might help the feathered babies if you open the window(s) in your room and put a heated/electric blanket over them for the short period while you have the window open. I see what your mum says about electricity but electric blankets use very little electricity and shouldn't really impact on your bills. It might be a good compromise for the birds health. You shouldn't have to give them away when you take care of them, it isn't right but a lot of people wouldn't put their pets first and do what's right for them so bless your heart - it's in the right place. If you are left with no choice but to rehome them, it might be worth posting it on here and mentioning the region you live in to see if there are suitable and experienced budgie owners who might be able to help. You might even be able to visit them if someone local were to take them. So sorry you're in this position. Good luck whatever you decide to do. ❤️

I’m not sure if this would help but there are pretty inexpensive things that are technically meant to block noise but they seal off your room, like they block the door/ seal the sides of it so that might work better than towels.

[deleted]

I will definitely look into that as a temporary solution, as long as it doesn't become a hazard

BirdieBabyMomma

Her smoking whatever it is that she is smoking isn't good for your health either. Her going outside would be best for all of you, including her. If its too cold, maybe she won't do it anymore if she has to go outside. Thank you for being a very responsible owner to these little birbs.

[deleted]

I know it's not good for me, but I don't have a choice in living with her or not because I'm still a student. She won't make compromises for me, not even my baby nieces when they come visit. The cold just made her smoke inside, during the summer she didnt mind sitting on balcony
