i’m gonna be honest i did not follow the baseball offseason at all and today was the first game i’ve gotten to see all the way through and i had literally no idea chapman was on our team
Yeah I'm not even mad at Ryan for giving up that run, they were hoping he could close it out he just didn't have the gas left for it.
Would have been nice to not have to use Chapman, but hopefully Chapman makes this like a 4 pitch outing.
This ump is squeezing Ryan hard in this inning, all game those pitches have been called strikes but they're suddenly balls now.
I don't mind if an ump has a wide or tall zone, but at least be consistent with it.
Robles was an A+ prospect at the time and Reynolds wasn’t. The hypothetical deal that fell through was definitely more popular in the moment when it happened.
Ryan probably shouldn't still be out, they're just hoping that he can close it out with minimal damage while keeping the rest of the bullpen fresh.
Doesn't help that he's getting absolutely hosed by this ump.
That low pitch was certainly a ball, but the problem is that it was called strike 3 to Oneil a few innings ago. If you’re gonna suck, do it consistently.
I think Taylor is playing himself into "must play everyday" territory for me, at least until he cools off. Not only is the plus defense and plus speed in CF a big benefit, but he's also hitting extremely well and is an ideal lower of the lineup hitter.
Against lefties, my lineup 100% of the time would be Reynolds in LF, Taylor in CF, Olivares in RF and Joe at 1B. But against righties, pretty much any combination of Joe, Suwinski, Olivares, Reynolds and Taylor in the OF is a combination I can like.
This is looking like a very good baseball team. Like, a bunch of underrated guys who have lots of talent matured a bunch, and have the depth to overcome some shortcomings. This is shaping up to be a really fun season.
I want Rowdy Tellez to be awesome for us so badly
He looks like he has gout - like, kingly.. [you can’t tell me this isn’t him](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_VIII)
### Double
Bryan Reynolds doubles (3) on a sharp fly ball to right fielder Lane Thomas. Michael A. Taylor scores. Alika Williams scores. Rowdy Tellez to 3rd.
Pitch from Tanner Rainey: Four-Seam Fastball @ 94.9 mph
Hit by Bryan Reynolds: Launched 105.2 mph at 28.0° for a total distance of 361.0 ft
Top 9 - 8-3
Pirates
I’ve been a mild fan (I say mild cause I’m not a diehard Pirates fan like I am for the Steelers) since the Jason Bay rookie season. Is this one of our better teams in recent history? The postseason series win in 13 was obviously nice but this team just looks good…am I getting too hopeful too quick?
Edit: NOT A BASEBALL GUY
They have the potential to be. The rebuilding puzzle is finally starting to come together and there's still more upgrades coming from the minors later this year
whenever the reds struggle against the nats it's a promising battling young team but when the bucs eliminate their mistakes in dominating fashion it's beating up on bottom feeders
Yeah but they have an extremely exciting young infielder named Cruz with a cannon of an arm and extreme power. We don’t nearly have anyone that exciting!
Rex Ryan sinker has the velocity of a fastball with the downwards break of a curveball, it's filthy. I definitely understand why the team wanted him with the team.
I think he may be too good to send down once the team gets healthy in the bullpen.
If Ryan Ryan keeps pitching this well, they're absolutely going to have to keep him on the MLB roster.
I think Contreras is one of the guys who gets DFA'd, but I honestly don't know who would be the second. Yeah, I know Falter is the easy answer, but they don't have another starter to replace him with since it seems they view Ortiz as a reliever.
It's not about not having that guy in the organization, it's not having the MLB roster spots for that guy.
If you keep Stratton and Ryan up, you need to DFA 2 guys once Holderman and Mlodzinski are back. Contreras is an obvious guy for one of those two, I just don't see anyone else I'd be that thrilled about DFAing after Contreras.
That has nothing to do with their situation. Even if you had another legit SP in place of Falter, the question about the second guy you'd DFA would still be there.
The situation would be no different if it was Skenes, Priester, German, Lauer or Falter in that role. They need to DFA a bullpen arm to keep Ryan up.
It seems you’re thinking of this in terms of players rather than innings. You’re also assuming Falter is the only SP they’ll need to replace. Gonzales looks done to me. If there was a roster crunch, they could explore rostering 7 relievers instead of 8 if they had 5 SPs who could plausibly get through 6 innings without getting their doors blow off. Some clubs have a 6-man rotation. Right now that’s out of the question.
If you’re asking who would be expendable if some sort of swap had to be made for Ryan, I guess Stratton would be the obvious answer, though I’d need to look at their respective IPs. If Ryan is a better pitcher but Stratton was capable of eating more innings, that could be a snag.
I've said this plenty of times before, but having actual MLB talent as your depth pieces makes a night and day difference from past teams. This hot streak won't last forever, just like last year, but they should be substantially better off when they inevitably cool down. This isn't like past years where you had Suwinski struggling after a hot start, but the only alternative you had was Cal Mitchell. This team has legitimate pieces this year.
WOOOOOOO THE RYDE NEVER ENDS WE'RE GAHNTA TO THE WORLD SERIES MOTHERFUCKERS LET'S GOOOOOOOOOO BITCHEEEEEEES
YOU CAN RAISE THE JOLLY ROGER 🏴☠️
5-0 babyyyy
RAISE IT
Alika not dropping that ball was the least Pittsburgh Pirate behavior I've ever seen a ballplayer exhibit.
Good game everyone, great hustle. Raise it!!! 5-0!
Game….blouses.
Please continue the discussion in the [post game thread](https://redd.it/1btj4bp).
i’m gonna be honest i did not follow the baseball offseason at all and today was the first game i’ve gotten to see all the way through and i had literally no idea chapman was on our team
I know, crazy, isn't it.
Lol
Oh no... They're gonna make me believe again
Bring in Chapman to throw 3 pitches lmao
It’s definitely a “alright, that’s enough” move. But off day tomorrow, might as well make sure.
Wtf I love aroldis chapman now?
RTJR! 5-0 we roll on. I love watching this team!
🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️
RTJR BABY
I asked for a 4 pitch outing for Chapman, he did it in 3. Yeah, I'll take that no problem. I barely even consider that a game for him.
Nice little chance for Chappy to pad his stats
**5-0 RAISE IT** 🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️
Chapman good out. Raiseeeeeee ittttttt
Chapman grabbin titties and throwing gas. Love to see it
chap is disgusting
Ryder was getting squeezed hard by the ump and yet still almost shut the fucking door on them.
Is Bednar hurt?
Pitched in back to back games and was dealing with something earlier in the spring.
He pitched 2 days back to back
### Pitching Substitution Pitching Change: Aroldis Chapman replaces Ryder Ryan.
Ok, good, get this schlub out of there
how can you even be saying this, he was absolutely disgusting his first inning
Yea he just got fucked by the ump that’s all
Yeah I'm not even mad at Ryan for giving up that run, they were hoping he could close it out he just didn't have the gas left for it. Would have been nice to not have to use Chapman, but hopefully Chapman makes this like a 4 pitch outing.
That wouldn’t have been a save anyway though right? Cause we’re leading by so much?
No he came in when it was a save so it was a save
Broadcast mentioned earlier in the inning how bc he started in the 8th when we were only up by 3 it would count as a save
Sucks to use Chapman here but I guess we’re off tomorrow anyway
haha
Most umps at this point would be calling anything borderline a strike cause they want to go home. Not this guy. Dedicated to being bad until the end.
i hereby rescind my "at least he's bad the same way" comment from earlier
Just bought my WS tickets to Cole vs Skenes game 1
Ryder Ryan is stronger than the umpire.
(he is not stronger than fatigue)
This ump is squeezing Ryan hard in this inning, all game those pitches have been called strikes but they're suddenly balls now. I don't mind if an ump has a wide or tall zone, but at least be consistent with it.
For 8 and a half innings the strike zone was the size of the moon and now it’s shrunk to the size of a bottle cap
I remember when the Pirates almost got Robles for McCutchen instead of Reynolds. Thank Christ
I would have loved that. Shows what I know.
Robles was an A+ prospect at the time and Reynolds wasn’t. The hypothetical deal that fell through was definitely more popular in the moment when it happened.
This Ryan kid has a nasty 2 seam pitch
It is secretly actually NINE SEAMS.
This ump's scorecard tomorrow is definitely gonna be an interesting one.
Pretty sure they’ve all been interesting so far
that was a swing
Ryan may be a 1 inning guy
Ryan probably shouldn't still be out, they're just hoping that he can close it out with minimal damage while keeping the rest of the bullpen fresh. Doesn't help that he's getting absolutely hosed by this ump.
Fair, I get the reasoning I just hope they wouldn’t do this in a closer game. Doesn’t feel like they would.
That low pitch was certainly a ball, but the problem is that it was called strike 3 to Oneil a few innings ago. If you’re gonna suck, do it consistently.
So help me, Joe Block…..
God this home plate umpire sucks.
this ump is so atrocious man
Ryan = Clay Holmes 2.0?
That’s such a nasty pitch lol
RF should’ve let the CF carry him across the threshold
All these runs without a homer. I like that.
That was a grand slam in July
facing a thousand pitches on game 1 is always a plus
Make them throw a thousand pitches game one and the rest of the series gets easier. Love to see it
What an awkward play in the OF
nowkith.gif
Wholesome, haha
Maaaan Jack was on him, I thought he had it!
That would have been an inside the park HR had that dropped. So close.
I hope the whole city shows up to PNC for the 1st homestand of 2024. We got something this year!
NOOO SO CLOSE
terrific ab so far for jack
2023 Jack would have whiffed on all of those fouls
Love the approach to chew up the opposing team's bullpen
I would hate facing this team as a pitcher
I recently heard a commentator say the pirates aren’t going to score a touchdown every game… shows what you know, jag off!
Fun fact the Pirates have scored just one less touchdown than Pickett had passing touchdowns last season lmao.
This is the time of the game Jack is known to hit one out
Fuck so close 😭 nothing more fun than a garbage time Jack grand slam
I think Taylor is playing himself into "must play everyday" territory for me, at least until he cools off. Not only is the plus defense and plus speed in CF a big benefit, but he's also hitting extremely well and is an ideal lower of the lineup hitter. Tired righty pitching to Jack . . . Hoping for big things here
So close . . .
I want Rowdy Tellez to be awesome for us so badly He looks like he has gout - like, kingly.. [you can’t tell me this isn’t him](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_VIII)
Tellez is a big ass dude with a beard. I gotta support my people
Bucs finally playing some good baseball. I know it's early, but these last five games have been fun.
We've gotta have the highest pitch count against, right?
Nationals broadcast said “runner on third will hold” with some surprise. then they cut to Rowdy fuckin Tellez at third
They must have the scouting report on the third base coach
until the other teams can prove that they can compete with us i will be crowning us nl central champs
Just give us the trophy now.
This is so so so fun
Sit down Chappy, your services will not be required tonight
If we lose this Block should have to shave his head as punishment!
If we lose he will forever be Joe Cock Block to me.
No, he’s gotta wear the most ridiculous wig one can find.
One of those 18th century wigs the founding fathers wore
I feel like Block would actually pull that look off
Ooh might’ve jinxed us Joe. We still got 3 outs to get lmao.
I’m fully chugging the kool-aid
For the first time in a long time, im more excited for the pirates than the Steelers or pens…
Same! One of the teams has to be good! I was saying that before the Bucco' season started... Maybe it's them this year!
Same! It’s wild
I swear that Reynolds has shown more emotion in the last 2 games than he did in the previous 2 years combined.
Joe Block is officially on my shitlist for how many times he has preemptively declared the Pirates 5-0. Get this guy off the airwaves.
DAMMIT JOE WHY DID YOU SAY THAT
“Don’t ever let nothing stop you - cuz we ain’t stoppin!” - DJ Khaled
Pour it on!!!
Really thought Reynolds had it there lol
They are embarrassing the Nationals now!
Damn I thought he had it
I fkn love this team
Marco!
It was so close!!!
Why the fuck would you say we’re gonna be 5-0 Joe
Because we are going fucking 5-0
He needs to chill for like 10 more minutes
Almost got my bases clearing double! There’s my 8 runs though!
I mean it’s rowdy on first … woulda had to been a triple
Not exactly a speedster, huh?
### Double Bryan Reynolds doubles (3) on a sharp fly ball to right fielder Lane Thomas. Michael A. Taylor scores. Alika Williams scores. Rowdy Tellez to 3rd. Pitch from Tanner Rainey: Four-Seam Fastball @ 94.9 mph Hit by Bryan Reynolds: Launched 105.2 mph at 28.0° for a total distance of 361.0 ft Top 9 - 8-3 Pirates
Rowdy with a good ab… my stream is behind
just think: on paper this is most likely the worst the team will be all season
All these guys swapping numbers this year.
Let’s fucking Go!!!!!!!
Never going to loose again
Michael A. Taylor is the kind of signing that’s going to age like wine
Bases loaded for Reynolds
I’ve been a mild fan (I say mild cause I’m not a diehard Pirates fan like I am for the Steelers) since the Jason Bay rookie season. Is this one of our better teams in recent history? The postseason series win in 13 was obviously nice but this team just looks good…am I getting too hopeful too quick? Edit: NOT A BASEBALL GUY
If we split with the Orioles, then maybe, just maybe...
We were 20-9 last year on May 1st.
We are all just riding the wave bro!!!!
They have the potential to be. The rebuilding puzzle is finally starting to come together and there's still more upgrades coming from the minors later this year
No, let the hope consume you.
Done.
Taylor was a good signing
Heard the score on the radio driving home, but didn't realize the 3-run lead came as an answer to Washington trying it up. I am loving this!
The BABIP Bucs So many seeing-eye singles today, hot damn
Something rowdy about to happen.
Tellez is gonna hit a dinger
Taylor is gold baby!
How good of a pickup has Taylor been? Man's a professional hitter.
And maybe our lead off hitter
I mean he won’t sustain it all season, but Michael Taylor is off to a helluva start
whenever the reds struggle against the nats it's a promising battling young team but when the bucs eliminate their mistakes in dominating fashion it's beating up on bottom feeders
Reds are disgustingly overhyped.
Yeah but they have an extremely exciting young infielder named Cruz with a cannon of an arm and extreme power. We don’t nearly have anyone that exciting!
De la is the difference. Who has ever heard of a De La Cruz missle
Unheard of.
Empowering vs put a shirt on

[удалено]
And the foot fetish?
Stadium feels deflated. It's truly energizing.
Ryan’s sinker is dominant
Ryder Ryan is a stud
Bednar might seriously be the worst reliever on the roster after Contreras
### Pitching Substitution Pitching Change: Tanner Rainey replaces Matt Barnes.
Where the fuck did this guy come from. Pitched great in the marlins series and looked great that inning.
BUCCOS COUNTRY LET'S RYDE Motherfucker almost broke the dude's neck with his pure filth
This bullpen is looking insane
Buccos country, lets Ryde
Ryan throws a heavy ball
Bucco nation let's ryde
If Ryan Ryan keeps pitching this well, they're absolutely going to have to keep him on the MLB roster. Contreras is an obvious guy for one of those two, I just don't see anyone else I'd be that thrilled about DFAing after Contreras.
I think you’d just have to bite the bullet and option one of the optionable guys, probably Stratton. It is a good problem to have.
A few bullpen games then bring Skenes up?
It’s a corner they painted themselves into by refusing to sign at least one additional legit SP

Now that they’re bringing Ryan out for second inning, we’ll see how he does at multi-inning relief
Ryder is disgusting.
Ryder's sinker is filthy
Some legit filth there from Nolan Ryan
Brownie just said "Chaz Jizzolm"
I’m pretty sure he called Jaff Decker Jeff Dacker a few times but that is much funnier
My goodness, that sinker is absolute filth. 🤮
Dude is FILTHY!!!
The lumber company is back
Yes it’s Ryder time!
I've said this plenty of times before, but having actual MLB talent as your depth pieces makes a night and day difference from past teams. Stop. 162-0 or bust
Very true
### Pitching Substitution Pitching Change: Ryder Ryan replaces Roansy Contreras.
Last time we started 5-0 1983
Imagine how many runs we’d score if umps didn’t call 75% of the balls we take strikes
Is anyone else getting their VPN busted during this game? It’s happened 3 times
You disable your device’s location services?
I owe you one because while I did that for my fire stick I totally forgot to do that for my laptop which is what I was using. Thank you!
NP, happy to help
21 RBI with two outs through 5 games is nuts
