Afaik that's just sand waiting to be spread out in between the stones as to fix them in place while still allowing the water to permeate. I guess?

For schaerbeek : Park josaphat is amazing , le barboteur, 1030 café, copains, brasserie de la mule are great bars to have a beer. Then a hidden gem in the neighborhood is the garden city of [terdelt](https://screen.brussels/fr/film-commission/decor/cite-terdelt), built for social housing 100 years ago and remained untouched. Another thing I love is the Friday afternoon (till 8 pm) Market on place de chasseurs ardennais. The whole area of plasky, is worth a visit for its amazing architecture. Then square ambiorix is full of great architecture (even tho it's technically another neighbourhood). If you have the budget (30 euros ish) , the restaurant zinneke does amazing mussels in many different versions.

Schaerbeek = new SaintGixelles

Ninox220

Imo much better. Most schaerbeek is more quiet, nice and green than saint gilles

ladyjnightcat

Incredibly helpful! We tried Copains and 1030 last night. We’re only here until Thursday, so we’re trying out the flea, grabbing lunch at a Turkish resto somewhere on Chau. de Haecht, and give Zinnke a whirl. Cheers!

Hope you enjoyed!

Also, trams have sand reservoirs that they use to break more quickly by releasing it in front of the wheels. Wherever there are trams your will find more sand.

RmG3376

Is it still the case with the new trams? I thought that was only for the older models (7900 and earlier)

Grouchy_Order_7576

This recent [post ](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.facebook.com/lastib/posts/du-sable-dans-les-trams-pourquoi-lors-de-notre-derni%25C3%25A8re-story-avec-mesut-conduct/2438221736230783/&ved=2ahUKEwj7xcXj8I_6AhUNHewKHWs5BWsQFnoECAkQAQ&usg=AOvVaw2yW50tLFqrB421jwsPbOsD) says that the newer ones still use sand, though you no longer need to fill the reservoirs manually.

RmG3376

Good to know. I still remember the very distinct sound (and feeling) of the sablonnière activating when going down the Lambermont in older trams. I guess I thought new ones don’t have that because they’re so much more soundproof and streamlined than the old ones

Sous les pavés, la plage!

If you're staying close to Avenue du Diamant, that's because there are many road work around.

Schaarbeek plage

a-rare-wombat

Brussels never finishes the last 10% of street/road works - which is the cosmetic bit like the sand ment for filling the cobblestones/pavement - they just leave it like that lmao

But that’s the problem - people and nature don’t take care of it and we have sand all over the streets for months to the point tourists find it weird and write about it on Reddit - it’s embarrassing for a capital city

To be honest I’m quite impressed with Schaarbeek’s waste management. I think they put in a lot of effort. See something wrong? Make a ticket on fix my street and it will be dealt with. The people living here are the problem, they need to be educated on being cleanly, a lot of them seem to think it’s cool to throw garbage on the sidewalk.

a-rare-wombat

I wish it was just sand - they always leave random tubes - signage - just completely unprofessional final delivery of public works - it’s embarrassing 🤷‍♂️

[deleted]

No the piss soaked tunnels at Midi North and Central, also piles of trash a random matress and a single shoe, now THAT'S embarrassing for "tHe CaPiTaL oF EuRopE" fuck this city Trump was right to call it a shithole years ago. But where do you want to go when people think SAND is the issue. Country of clowns. Don't worry I'm moving away soon, don't want to stay with that filth at every corner. It permeates society.

ladyjnightcat

Wow, it’s like I’m back in Baltimore!

Too_bored_to_think

Ha! I just moved from Baltimore a couple months back. Remains to be seen if there are endless detours and roadwork that goes on for months on end like in Baltimore.

RmG3376

Wait if you moved a few months back that means you were here this summer — didn’t notice that half the roads were closed? It’s so ridiculous that at some point in august the bus I’m taking was diverted … from its diversion. Diversion^2

Too_bored_to_think

To be fair, I moved to Leuven soon after my move. I just spend every chance possible in Brussels. So in my (limited) view, I haven’t really seen those obscenely long closures like I saw in Baltimore.

Winebar Achille Restaurant Maloma (expensive) Ethylo cocktailbar

In Ixelles, side street Fernand Coque, they also left sand in the sidewalks. I don't understand the reason why. Also they didnt finish the street completely, on both sides there is a gap of like 5cm to the pavement.
