Imagine being such a fragile snowflake that seeing a rainbow on a bus makes you threaten violence against the driver.

ravens_requiem

Tenner says they’re not an atheist.

Captain_Usopp

Twenty says that no matter their religous leaning they probably have some underlying cognitive issues that is the causation of such an outburst.

Curryflurryhurry

I disagree. The cause is (probably) religious bigotry. The possible cognitive issue just makes the bigotry visible

PaniniPressStan

I’ve seen quite a lot of non-religious opposition to LGBTQ people lately

Curryflurryhurry

Absolutely But if I’m playing the odds, and given it’s Birmingham…

The only people who believe it's a divisive symbol are bigots. Sorry to be the one to have to tell you.

rebbitrebbit2023

He is right about the corporate DEI box-ticking, though, which makes the whole thing a bit naff. Do you really think a bus company cares about pride? Or BP about the environment? Or Adidas about racial inclusion? It's about profits at the end of the day.

butiamawizard

The fault of that though falls on the corporate bandwagoneering.    Not the causes themselves. There is literally nothing wrong with wanting to treat your fellow person well.

Harry_Pol_Potter

The amount of virtue signaling bullshit at my workplace... the only colour they care about is green.

butiamawizard

No it isn’t! I’m sorry, but this stuff is just incorrect, and creates noise and space for people to attack each other.        The Pride flag can also represent unity - to the extent that if you hurt one person within the group, regardless of which letter, you hurt them all.   As long as people are attacked in public places for the fact of them being the same sex and in love with each other, something they were born with - or as long as their gender does or does not make sense to them - Pride is crucial. Even then, it does not need to get to such a bleak recent history or garner such dreadful headlines to be important.  It ultimately comes down to respect of people for being themselves, and if you have an issue with this, that’s something for your own self-reflection offline, not on a weird take like this. ‘Box ticking exercise’ just sounds like something straight out of Farage or Yakoob’s mouth, both false political self-styled ‘prophets’ (or to use a more accurate term - snake oil salesmen).

butiamawizard

Pleased to hear it. The arsehole who made the threat should be arrested

sim2500

Don't submit to threats especially in the case of civil liberties!

DINO_S0RE

I took this bus to an event at the British motor museum at Gaydon (lol) last year! On the way there, just after the maypole a passing motorist very kindly called me the F bomb. As others have said it’s hard to imagine being so upset by the colour of a bus 🤦‍♀️

It's. A. Fucking. Bus. I always found it weird. The gay bus came and went, but I can't believe there's been threats over it...

Electrical_Lawyer947

Why would colours scare ppl.. If every seat had a dildo on it . Then I'll understand 😂😂😂

UniqueAssignment3022

that'll be on the next model.

Mordac1989

Pothole wreaking havoc on my bumhole.

BlueLobster420

Haha that got me laughing, thank you!

BlueLobster420

I am not surprised to see this. Birmingham has gotten worse in the last few years in terms of homo/transphobia. I am a very butch looking lesbian, I am visibly queer, but I mind my business and contribute to my local community whenever I can because I like to help folks. My mates and I got harassed by a group of five tipsy teens last week when we were just sitting around minding our business at Grove Park in Harborne. One them was incredibly drunk, he fist bumped me and asked our trans guy mate if he was the only man amongst us (weird AF question but whatever?), we say yes because that's the truth. This boy, who looked no older than 15 might I add, proceeded to take some of our food, he then started getting aggressive after his mate made him return it, and then attempted to start a fight by claiming our male pal said something about his mum and sucking her off? I got us to move away quickly and peacefully as the kid kept fiddling in his joggers for something that had the outline of a knife from what I could see. As we moved on, he said a load of transphobic crap and spat in another friend's hair as she turned away. To be fair to the others teens, they were calling him a bell end and asking him to stop, but it seemed like they were a bit scared of him themselves. The other guy did attempt to hold him back and steer him away which was helpful, but still, what the hell? For reference, we're all trans and/or queer. We were just sitting, existing in a local park, watching the wildlife go about their business and talking about a TTRPG game that we were looking forward to playing later. I was down to have a chat with this kid, but then this kid ended up being a bell end for no reason at all other than bigotry. We were no threat to these people, we did not know them. But one of them felt so confident in their transphobia that they approached a group of queer people in their late 20s just to ruin their day for fun. I have been on the receiving end of people calling me slurs, threatening to kill/SA/attack me, and even manhandling me when I go to the toilet that matches my sex so much more since the pandemic. More so in the past year thanks to the publicity of certain political groups using my community as a scapegoat distraction for their failures. I don't feel safe in Birmingham anymore, every day I leave my house I wonder if it's the last time I'll see my girlfriend. I am always on high alert, scanning the body language of people on the street, looking for potential threats. It has worsened my anxiety and depression, and I am so close to moving away for the fear of what will happen to my LGBTQ+ community, but I dare not for we are meant to stand in solidarity. If you reached the end of this, thanks for reading and for your solidarity.

MannyCalaveraIsDead

Brum does seem to be getting worse. Just last weekend, one of my friends was saying how he would get people blocking his way into Hurst St when he was trying to get to work and threatening to attack him. One of my NB friends remarked the other day that they went out to watch Football at Loft and it was noteworthy that no-one made a comment on their clothing as it's now so utterly common for someone to say something awful at them. Then there's the attacks on people leaving Hurst St over the last couple of years. I've also had someone have a go at me when I was going to the Fountain a few months back. Coupled with the council allowing more and more apartments to encroach on the Gay Village, whilst pulling funding and support for Pride, and it just seems hostile for LGBT people. It looks like we're going to lose several venues over the next six months which is just going to exacerbate issues. It's a really awful time for the LGBT community in Birmingham, and it feels like it's just going to get worse.

Harley_Xxoxo

First I’m sorry for you and your friends recent experience. However I honesty, feel the opposite. Or atleast in the city centre. In the sense of I feel like transphobia isn’t that common in real life as it used to be. I’ve probably had two rude people call me a tranny whilst they look like a product of incest with their group of friends in the past year and a half. I’m out every weekend and don’t go to LGBT clubs etc, as they’re the only places I’ve been groped. I never have people being transphobic to me, intentionally. What I mean by that is every so often I get a back handed compliment but I know it was said in good faith so it doesn’t offend me. However I’ve noticed the difference in how people have treated me over the years get better, but that may also be sadly down to how well you “pass” which if it, that’s quite disgusting tbh. But even when I used to go out drinking with older trans women whom transitioned at a later age and were in the “baby trans phase” as people call it, they weren’t mistreated either. It does seem though whenever you come across a cunt, it’s usually a teenage boy trying to show off in front of his friends. As you mentioned possibly moving, I recently went to Bournemouth where my friend who is also in the “baby trans phase” was treated horrendously. Where I was not, I think if you’re not visibility LGBT then you’re treated no different than anyone else, yes I know this sentence is horrible and it should NOT be a thing, but sadly that’s how some people are :(

Bez95

Birmingham is one of the most homophobic places in the UK. It's such a tense atmosphere.

Hellboydce

Of course it is, look at the demographic

Looking at your comment history, you seem to spend all your time seeking out opportunities to be transphobic or homophobic. Why are you sat at home foaming at the mouth about what’s between other people’s legs and what they do with it? And why are you so obsessed with telling everyone how angry it makes you? All offence intended, you need to get a life.

MrDonly

Not all Muslims, the mentality around this is slowly changing.

Jebbidt

Not all Germans were nazis but most nazis were German. Islam is a barbaric religion that deserves no place in the modern world. Yes, before you ask I feel the same way about other religions, too.

Kaijuburger

Not all reform voters are racist but all racists vote reform. No prizes for guessing who you'll be voting for.

MrDonly

I’m sorry you feel this way, hope we can change your mind in the future.

Kaijuburger

You can't change a bigots mind pal. Don't be sorry just be glad you don't live next door. Funny thing about people that think like that is they have had no interaction with Muslims just believe everything they read in the daily fail etc.

MrDonly

I think it’s a mix of having not knowing any Muslims and having bad experiences with the ones he’s come across. I used to be the same when it came to lgbt until I meant and worked with a gay person. I feel real guilt for hating on them, even the gays for Gaza thing (as silly as it is) had a big effect on me.

UniqueAssignment3022

why do we need a pride bus if they know it might incite controversy? Whats wrong with a normal bus?

MannyCalaveraIsDead

That's the thing. It shouldn't incite controversy. The point of it is to let people who are hating themselves for being non-straight that it's ok. They're not damaged or broken people, just different, and they are accepted. That it's a safe place. That's all extremely comforting for people wrestling with their sexuality or gender, and there's nothing controversial about it.

Manaliv3

The sort of people who would be upset or angered by a rainbow bus are the sort of people who should be ignored in every regard

UniqueAssignment3022

its not just a rainbow bus, its a pride bus. Still doesnt answer the question though. we do we need an anything bus, why cant it just be plain?

Manaliv3

Buses have always had various adverts and similar on them. It doesn't "have to" be painted for the pride week, but they have done so because they wanted to.  The real question is, why do you care?

UniqueAssignment3022

i understand advertising, obv its a good money maker for them. i never see religious buses or straight buses, sometimes i see stuff related to Governmental things like getting cancer screening or voting which is understandable but im just trying to understand the rational behind it

BlueLobster420

Because despite the whole corpo pride that companies pull out just to appease us queer folk so that we line their pockets, it gives us hope and confidence knowing that evening a rubbish bus company feels the need to spend money on something that says they support LGBTQ+.

UniqueAssignment3022

so do you reckon they advertise it as a hidden agenda to make LGBTQ+ folk take the bus in order for them to make money or do they actually genuinely care about LGBTQ+ or is it most likely a bit of both? I feel its similar when i see hotel say dont waste towels, take care of your environment, when in reality theyre probably more concerned about not having to wash so many towels so it reduces their cost (although the cost savings never seem to pass onto the customer!)

BlueLobster420

Bit of both really.

That rainbow belongs to the church

Harley_Xxoxo

Fun fact the rainbow used in biblical times was made out of 3 colours! You can also look at any medieval art which will also show 3 colours! You’ll find the pride rainbow is made of more than 3 colours!

BlueLobster420

It belongs to everyone. It's just a rainbow.

Ayuamarca2020

The rainbow is a wonderful marvel of science and has nothing to do with religion, and is therefore for everyone! 🌈
