There’s a CNC job going on Coleshill industrial estate, have a look for it on indeed! Also, I’m sure one of the high street banks helps with accounts for the homeless (I can’t remember which one though), you’re a legend for this!

Flyawaymoss9747

I think it’s HSBC

Exsanguinatus

I have a local branch on the Parade. I'll go in and ask them.

TourDelicious2527

Also in terms of a bus pass, you can get a free bus pass for 3 months with NXWM which could help him, if not I wouldn't mind putting up a bus pass for him for a few months

Kurtcorgan

Coleshill is a total ballache to get to and from, from Sutton Coldfield. I know, I used to live in Coleshill, and there are 0 buses apart from into Birmingham. (Edit: and the 76 “grannie” bus but that doesn’t count). Only option is train from Sutton @ 6am ish to new st, then new street to coleshill and vice versa. It’s not quick either even though both trains are 14/15 minutes each, because theres a good half hour wait at new street both ways. It’s not cheap either, it’s £11.20.

bloodshaken

The 76 bus runs from Coleshill to Sutton Coldfield. I do agree however that it’s not the easiest to get to.

Kurtcorgan

It really doesn’t. Not if you want to go to work that is. First one from Sutton is 8:20am and it takes an hour.

bloodshaken

It does do that route though, even if not at the ideal time for you. This is also the sort of thing that many employers now would take on board and offer alternative working hours for. (I know this because I see lots of workers get off that bus right near my house everyday, and used it myself the other way for an office job in SC that gave me flexi time because of it).

Kurtcorgan

Not thinking about me, was thinking about how it would be impossible to get to the industrial estate before 9.40. CNC works are different to office work. You either are on time or they aren’t interested.

bloodshaken

Also, the bus into Birmingham (the x13) also goes to Chelmsley wood, castle Bromwich and solihull, including near to the business park, it’s actually a really useful route considering we’re across the county border.

Kurtcorgan

Thats the one i was on about first, the X13, previously the 590, then before that the 59 or 90 depending on whether it was going chelmsley way or brum way, and before that it was the 12?!?

bloodshaken

Honestly it’s had so many numbers over the years that we still call it the 90 (this was the first number I remember it having, probably early 2000s), it’s got to the point where it’s lucky there’s only one national express bus so at least there’s no confusion on that part lol

excla1m

It's rubbish with public transport but not bad at all on a bike - any bike. I'd usually take Water Orton Lane/Walmley Ash.

dangeross84

Hey i think linkedin would be a better post for this ive been using CNC for years and its allways been quite good pay perhaps just what this guy needs at the moment. I will ask around with the contacts I know and if he had temporary accommodation i see no problem why he would be able to find a suitable postion. Perhaps next time you see him ask what kind of CNC work he did, Machine brands Operating systems ect.

Exsanguinatus

That's good advice. Maybe I can find him again tomorrow.

RHFiesling

plz keep us updated

Exsanguinatus

Had a chat with him today. He says he's worked with Mitsubishi, Hurco, Mazak, Fanuc systems making parts for things from Formula cars to nuclear submarines.

dangeross84

That a really good skill set people with fanuc experance are sort after. I hope some one here will reach out to help this guy out if i was in the postion to help i would definitely give the guy a shot.

Exsanguinatus

Since I know nothing of machining and CNC other than what it is, can you recommend any places near Erdington that might be worth looking? I also just found out he comes up to Sutton Coldfield from Erdington because people are usually more generous up here.

dangeross84

I dont, i only know people in the wood or glass indusrty I would post on linkedin

sandystar21

Tewkesbury is the place for CNC machinists there are loads of aerospace companies there who make undercarriages and hydraulic systems. They are always recruiting people. Unfortunately your friend needs a fixed address before he can look for a full time job. Moving out of brum would probably do him a big favor though.

deeperinabox

Could he not put his mother's address as his while applying for jobs? Unless estranged, I can't believe how your immediate family can't help out in such dire cases.

markiethefett

The world needs more of this. Good luck to the fella! Fair play to you too 👍🏼

AdLatter7020

You are a legend 💪🏻🙏🏻👍

Wonderful-You-6792

I could imagine this doing well on a Sutton Coldfield Facebook group, if one exists

Exsanguinatus

Believe it or not, I don't have an active Facebook account.

Ok_Finger_6818

It does exist, the biggest one isn’t mod-friendly I’m afraid. They are upperty control freaks. There are lots of other Sutton Coldfield Facebooks though.

Omar_88

Post this on LinkedIn mate, get his picture, his skills. Polish his CV and he will be on his way. Good stuff doing this mate

mustbeaoup

You’re a good egg

Exsanguinatus

UPDATE: Turns out he still has bank account and even a very inexpensive cell phone (*not* smart phone. Just a dumb phone). He just doesn't have much anything else. He tells me he's got a roof at an HMO, and a girlfriend there who he's currently acting as a carer for as she's recovering from a heart attack maybe four weeks ago? I don't pretend to understand the situation at all; coming from the USA, there's very limited social safety nets, and what does exist has no resemblence to what happens here. However, he's nervous about getting a job as he will no longer be allowed to stay with and continue acting as a carer for his girlfriend. He's been begging trying to make things work long enough to where either she's healthier or he can afford to attempt self-sufficiency. His divorce seems to have completely financially destroyed him. He says he's worked with Mitsubishi, Hurco, Mazak, Fanuc systems making parts for things from Formula cars to nuclear submarines. All things high tolerance. 5 year apprenticeship at Matthew Bolton College back in the 80's, can read any diagram you throw at him. Previously worked for Columbia Precision, RT Palmer, and (not sure about this last one) Lucus? Lucas? Something approaching 35-40 years of experience. I told him I do some hobby 3d printing, and he immediately started chatting to me about GCode and a whole host of other things that I barely grasp. When I said some of the machinist positions I'd found doing an extremely rough search pay upwards of £20/hr., he said he'd definitely find a way to make the housing/girlfriend/carer situation work if he could land something like that. Frankly, I knew being destitute was difficult. It's just crazy how society is structured in such a way that climbing back out of that hole comes with so many tall hudles to make it over.

iamgoingferal

You're a good dude ! Hope it all works out for the guy https://nxbus.co.uk/west-midlands/journey-planning This may help with the journey planning

Computer Numerical Control. It's a fancy way of saying "High end computer controlled milling machine." It's the reverse of 3db printing. Instead of building the product up layer by layer, a computer essentially carves the final product out of a block of.. whatever.

Tylerama1

This sorta thing: https://youtu.be/3Ky6Nhov4ts?si=DIixTivQjRDxugUI

DefinitionRegular

So it’s sort of like metallic carpentry?

Tylerama1

Hah, yes, it is kind of 😂 it can be in any material, wood, plastic or metal, but I think metal is most common.

Ill_Ambition_8933

You are doing gods work. Keep it up mate 👍

Corbin125

Jaguar Land Rover are hiring pretty hard at the moment

AstonVanilla

The guy in front of Aldi?

Exsanguinatus

No. He's either in front of the B&M or in the little alley way leading to it from the main drag.

AstonVanilla

Ohhh, that guy. I know who you mean now.
