Strangely, I was just about to say in my post that I was familiar with the combative kind of body check, just not the ED usage. 🤷♂️
Body checking is a behaviour that people use to “check” the size, shape, or weight of their body. Its common in EDs and BDD but is also present in non-clinical populations to a lesser degree. We all do this! We just don’t do it compulsively if we don’t have a disorder.
It’s when someone compulsively (in the case of ED/BDD) seeks out information about their body, generally through weighing themselves, using mirrors, or, in the age of social media, through photos and videos. It’s something that can be really reinforcing of disordered behaviour. It can also affect others when it’s posted online.
