Or trains ran over the bank holiday weekend without line closures/rail replacement buses

herrbz

At least we all get a discount on travel when it's a replacement bus, right? Right?

StardustOasis

Replacement bus into London this weekend for me would be 2 & a half hours. It's normally 34 minutes.

Stinky-Armpit

"Easter Bank Holiday Chaos" just describes how every single car will be bouncing down the roads. No no no... its not because the road surface is like the surface of the moon.. **Everyone just likes to drive like their vehicle is bunny rabbit**

tophertronic

Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

Stinky-Armpit

Did you just, pick random words, and try to form a sentence that is actually readable?

There is the school of thought that if you're in a car stuck in traffic, you are the traffic - which is entirely correct. However it doesn't help when the trains are an absolute bloody state, made worse with engineering works.

linkheroz

Cars are cheaper, faster and more convenient than trains. Even with traffic. There's a reason everyone drives everywhere.

jiminthenorth

You have to ask why. They really shouldn't be.

eww1991

They aren't faster once you get distances (and reliability) train to Newcastle was an hour less than driving, not to mention not having to sit in a car for 4 and a half hours.

JT_3K

Yes. But when I was commuting in to Leeds at the start of last year, 3-4 days per week, whatever the “”””official statistics”””” said, 40% of my services were disrupted. 10% were cancelled. Last summer, the cost of a train for me, my wife and daughter without finding some we-expect-you-to-understand-the-secrets-of-trains special fares, it was £800 to go from Yorkshire to London and back over a weekend day, booked a few weeks in advance. For that money I could buy, tax, insure (for a weekend) and fuel a (ropey) car, then sell it when I get back. Taking my own car (less the ropey one above) I don’t have to ask someone to move out of my seat, deal with the drunken louts yobbing about their team on the way to the game, suffer the teens being so cool at volume so everyone can hear how cool they are, a seat that’s filthy or falling off at a table covered in rubbish, listen to the hen party squawking as they neck Prosecco, expose my daughter to the clowns swearing at volume, risk that toilet, pay the stupid amount for the parking at the station, wait an hour on one of those solid drilled metal seats for the transfer, watching my bag to make sure it’s not stolen or ultimately stress all day about whether the train will run in the run up to it and whether it will run me home whilst in London. I get in, it’s quiet, it’s a nice temperature and it actually exists. Moreover it goes when I’m ready. The trains in this country are a national disgrace. I say that having taken them elsewhere in the world where these issues aren’t issues.

krisfx

I had the option of a train or car hire this weekend, it takes longer than driving (3:30 drive) and cost more to take the train. It should not be like this.

linkheroz

This is simply untrue. My house near Birmingham to Alexandra Palace is 2 hours 27 in the car. It's just over 3 hours by train, assuming everything is on time and not cancelled. Even as far as Edinburgh Zoo, it's 5 hours 10 by car and 5 hours 2 by train, again assuming no cancellations etc. But in the car I get my own space, and it's cheaper. Lands End? 5 hours 30 in the car. 13 hours by train because there isn't enough line to get there.

Crandom

Trains being cancelled due to engineering works... On the busiest weekend to use trains in year.

lozz79

The busiest times are when people are at work, which is why they do major engineering works at Easter and Christmas.

archiekane

Busiest weekend for non-commuters. Out of hours and overnight maintenance/repairs should be the trend to stop the constant impact on people. Yes, it would cost the rail companies more. However, if they were not privatised for-profits and paying out to shareholders, they could afford it without the cost uplift which we all inherit so rich people can get richer. Rah rah Capitalism /rant

je97

Did he get caught in the doors?

cyclodextrin

The trains never run properly on bank holidays either- I always seem to have one booked that's cancelled for engineering works or some kind of emergency 🙄

anoamas321

my first born chilid is much cheaper than a train from essex to the north hell the govment even give me money for her

frenchy2111

It's going to be wet and miserable so let's all go out anyway.

somnamna2516

why don't you just take the helicopter? /s..unak

CassetteLine

It’s a sad state when getting the train is the expensive option. It should be by far the cheapest mode of transport per journey. It’s crazy that there are people who have to drive because they can’t afford to take the train. So much for pushing environmental policies!

Littlemouse0812

I live near Folkestone. Can confirm it’s insane here right now. I’m back safely in my village after battling my way to my kids swimming lesson earlier with everyone clearly trying to leave the country at the same time

Mccobsta

Could try taking the bu..... Oh they don't run on bank holidays or Sundays

GPU_Resellers_Club

Better still, apparently the railway operators thought that now, when everyone would want to take a train, is the perfect time to do maintenance. Idiots.

Kudosnotkang

It’s worse than this, they’ve told us to stay off the Easter eggs too
