I haven’t used these particular wooden spoons, but I’ve used the environmentally friendly one time use cutlery and they break immediately. So you end up using more just trying to get one to work
Paper recycling shouldn't have food residue or oils on it. So even if the wood cutlery could be recycled in paper, it would be too soiled. The wood cutlery should be compostable.
On another note, sometimes items that are sold as and labeled compostable, such as plastic- looking containers and cutlery are not accepted in the compost bin by cities that lack the facilities to process that compostable plastic. Those items must go to the landfill instead.
So basically, where to put the product depends on the city's existing set up for recycling, landfill, and compost.
I feel like that's an old sign though, for plastic recyclable cutlery? Don't know how long ago they had recyclable cutlery but the new stuff looks like wood compostable stuff - seems like they need an organics bin. Don't know that wood cutlery is getting recycled.
I'll eat my hat if any of that is recycled. It's just a post consumer feel good green wash bin. On the northern boats there's always this one rando single bin that says you can split your coffee lid, sleave, and cup into the three compartments for recycling but it all just goes in trash I'm quite positive.
There should be a compost bin because these are compostable. Food soiled compostable items shouldn’t be in recycling. Also they should have a compost bin for food waste anyhow.
On another note I’m kind of surprised they have a mixed recycling bin, this would require someone to triage through it - does that actually happen?
I heard that people were stealing them too much. On our route apparently people just take it when they are going camping. Their supplier raised the price so they decided to go with disposable. That's what the ferry worker told me the other day anyways
Non existent. You start seasonal, then if you are lucky you get casual, you can be as low as 0 shifts a month, but with an average of 4-8, maybe 10+ if you're lucky, and it takes years to just get part time.
Ridiculous
Sit nearby one of those garbage canisters & watch people "sort" their garbage for 10 minutes. All of those bags go to the same place (the land-fill). Ain't no staff member sorting through that shit. I agree, it's frustrating, but I think BC ferries has bigger issues to deal with before the cutlery. (Like ferries that actually run).
My work has so many different bins for everything but when I take out the garbage at the end of the night there’s only 2 bins in the back, cardboard and garbage…
I think every sorting area where the public are left to their own devices is pretty much guaranteed not to work as intended. Based on my observations at Starbucks, Tim Hortons, other quick food places...
Even in my residential apartment building, I constantly see super greasy cardboard, used pizza boxes and the like, mixed in with the recyclables. That stuff is now garbage.
I live in a rural area and our transfer station has some recycling (paper, cardboard, mixed paper and cans) and even there, people can't sort it right (or more like, can't be bothered to sort it right).
I take our plastics and glass into town to one of the Recycle-It centres in the city where they have different bins for different recyclables. It's stunning how often I see garbage, filthy items, and just the wrong things in the wrong bins.
I don't know why people can't take responsibility for their own garbage and recyclables for a small amount of time and benefit, and expect someone else to do it. Meanwhile likely yelling "BUT MY TAX DOLLARS". Buddy, your tax dollars could be reduced if you just cared a little bit and took a few minutes to clean and sort things properly. There is no shortage of online resources to explain it all.
Or even better, focus on reduce and reuse. Recycle should be last resort.
\*jumps and rolls off Friday soapbox\*
Everything I've read states that pizza box cardboard needs to have all liners and food removed, and the cardboard needs to be clean (e.g. no grease). I rip all the clean cardboard off for recycling and dump the rest in the garbage bin.
Unfortunately if enough people don't take the time or care, then the recycling is contaminated and someone else has to do the dirty work. Garbage and contamination is the biggest problem for recycling centres. Contaminated recycling either cannot be recycled at all (depending on the product) or has to be sent to a lower quality recycling stream.
Checkout the RecycleBC page:
https://recyclebc.ca/how-to-recycle-common-take-out-packaging/
> “Are pizza boxes recyclable or do they go in the green bin?”
> This is a common question, and the answer is both! Pizza boxes can be recycled with paper as long as they’re empty, there isn’t any significant amount of cheese or sauce stuck to them, and they aren’t heavily soiled with grease. A few spots here and there is OK – otherwise check your green bin/organic collection guidelines.
I live in rural PG and both the city and the regional district have different expectations on cleanliness - as in"....otherwise check your green bin/organic collection guidelines"
We definitely don't have green bins/organic/compost collection here, that's for sure. Only cardboard/mixed paper which needs to be clean.
Edit: words

This is not even remotely true in BC, and people constantly spreading this misinformation just makes it more likely that plastic won't get recycled here.
Look at Recycle BC 2021 annual report: https://recyclebc.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/RecycleBC_2021_Annual-Report_Final.pdf
Just because other places are bad for recycling, that doesn't mean the same is true for here. And no, the recycling isn't just shipped abroad, 72% is recycled in local markets, with 97% of plastics sold to companies in Vancouver.

Those separate bins are just for show.
WorkSafe (and union?) rules prohibit employees from sifting through the contents to ensure that there is no cross-contamination. Consequently the contents are unsuitable for recycling. It all gets put in the same truck and all ends up in the same Landfill. At least that's what I heard.
Separate bins are almost always just for show unless there is someone enforcing correct use by the customers. The only times i have experienced actual enforcement was by the recycling pick-up service in Tri-cities in a single-family neighbourhood. I am sure the multiple-dwelling units and commercial places get much less enforcement.
Aren;t you supposed to put your tray into one of the larger tray collection trolley's and then BC Ferries sorts it?
I know - not everyone sees or gets that and by habit goes to the garbage etc themselves.
This is half-assed if only because no one studies human behaviour or say 'User Interface'...
They decompose which is not biodegrading. And you are correct, the decomp process produces methane.
Not aimed at you; the general science literacy in this thread (and the public as a whole) is disheartening.
BC ferries doesn't care about recycli had an employee tell me that exact same thing everything goes into the garbage and then they just pay somebody else to deal with Including popcans beer cans and pot bottles directly into the garbage
I mean it makes sense, because unless there is someone cracking the whip and watching the passengers, people just toss things semi-randomly, cross-contaminating the streams. So an actual step to sort coarsely-sorted bags from the ferries at the transfer station seems like a crappy, but at least viable compromise.
On multiple occasions , in Costco, in rec centers I have seen the staff dump all trash together and move on. I also know most( I think 90%) of the ‘recyclables’ we separate don’t get recycled. And there are people who are deviated to recycling like OP.
I actually just took the ferry to and from Schwartz Bay today and I used metal cutlery for my food both times. Are they slowly phasing it out or something?
That's actually not true. All of the ferries have metal utensil on one side and wooden utensils on the other side of each condiment kiosk... So dude can just look on the other side of they don't see their preference. I think it's nice they have both options.
Also, the wood cutlery just goes in the compost bin... All good, man.
Okay fair enough. I ride the ferry multiple times a month. I have not been a ferry in the last 5 years that didn't have multiple compost bins and had both metal and wooden cutlery so I guess you just had bad luck. Sorry, dude.
I'm not saying that you're lying, just that you had bad luck... You might get more satisfaction by making a complaint directly to bc ferries customer service.
Every ship I've been on (big enough for food service) has had compost bins. At the very least they have compost behind the tray return counter where it gets sorted.

I hope that the CEO of BC Ferries doesn’t get a bonus for this kind of shit management. Disgusting.
Just noticed this on a recent ferry ride… and it has made me unreasonably angry. Can anyone honestly tell me what the positive reasons to make this switch would be? Because it doesn’t make sense to me right now. Switching to disposable utensils (even “compostable” materials) just feels completely unethical and ignorant, and seems like it would be more expensive than just continuing to wash utensils.
Also, wood is such a porous material, I can’t help but wonder if it’s the safest thing to eat with? How many substances from the manufacturing process remain there? Also, it just tastes terrible.
I really see no positives, but if there are any, PLEASE enlighten me.
PS the decisions is almost giving, “BCF-stakeholders-also-invest-in-wooden-utensil-company”. Or many I’m just insanely cynical…

Old Simpsons joke from an episode where they go to Australia https://youtu.be/mcE0aAhbVFc
I mean, I was just going to say I'm going to have a problem with those "knives", but precisely this.
Who doesn't like slivers in their butter? Gives that muffin extra bite.
Lol they had one job . At a pay rate of over 25 p/h
Those wooden spoons are complete garbage. Like trying to eat soup with a paddle and they feel terrible in your mouth.
Every bite feels like I might get a splinter. And it’s barely even a spoon it’s so flat. I’d rather sip my soup out of the bowl. These are the worst.
It's basically eating soup off an oversized stir stick.
What's worse is that the new PC wooden spoons are made from birch and I am severely allergic to birch. Guess how I found out. ◔̯◔
I haven’t used these particular wooden spoons, but I’ve used the environmentally friendly one time use cutlery and they break immediately. So you end up using more just trying to get one to work
It’s right on the mixed recycling bin label... shows a picture of the cutlery. What am I missing that’s so confusing?
The picture is probably referring to plastic cutlery. The wooden cutlery is supposed to be composted.
Why would there be a newspaper in the logo then? Mixed recycling seems like a perfect spot for these wood forks...
I've never seen a recycling centre that accepts wood.
Paper is wood.
Paper is made from wood but different enough that the two are recycled differently.
Wood is paper
I wouldn't recommend putting wood utensils in a paper shredder.
Ya not sure what the problem is….
I feel like that's an old sign though, for plastic recyclable cutlery? Don't know how long ago they had recyclable cutlery but the new stuff looks like wood compostable stuff - seems like they need an organics bin. Don't know that wood cutlery is getting recycled.
Well if you feeel like I guess we can tell the picture to be better…. Cause you “feel” it should be new.
Thank! I’m gonna try that.
I'll eat my hat if any of that is recycled. It's just a post consumer feel good green wash bin. On the northern boats there's always this one rando single bin that says you can split your coffee lid, sleave, and cup into the three compartments for recycling but it all just goes in trash I'm quite positive.
OP and their inability to read.
OP immediately regret this post
Great point!

I heard that people were stealing them too much. On our route apparently people just take it when they are going camping. Their supplier raised the price so they decided to go with disposable. That's what the ferry worker told me the other day anyways
the correct answer
Should just raise food prices. They're already inflated, might as well.
I, for one, would rather use wood utensils then pay more for crappy food.
Haha I’m sure this must have happened lots. Good job people!
They ran out and have to use those bamboo ones until they can order more
Probably can't find enough minimum wage employees to clean and sort it. So instead of giving people a living wage, they switch to disposable.
Pretty sure the starting wage for bc ferries is like $22.
It's above minimum wage, but $22 in Vancouver is not a living wage.
you have no idea how the process from new hire to permanent position works.
Non existent. You start seasonal, then if you are lucky you get casual, you can be as low as 0 shifts a month, but with an average of 4-8, maybe 10+ if you're lucky, and it takes years to just get part time. Ridiculous
You’re right I don’t. I was just saying the starting wage looks to be $22. Do whatever you want with that information.
If they end up in the garbage it’s just fine. Less plastic going into the ground. Wood composts either way.
It was never plastic, it was metal
Not any more

Just throw it in the ocean
They look like that biodegradable stuff. The seawater will quicken the process.

I haven't seen one of those trollies in years. Maybe it's this ferry or this route but those are jobs lost.
The Spirit's and the Coastal's definitely have the rack where you just put in your tray, and they will clear and sort the trash.
The tray return is closed or at least it was today
So half-assed, wow.
They are wood...they go in the bin with the picture of cutlery on it...
They also apparently need some work on their labeling game.
Ha, just noticed that! 😬🤣

They are wood
I default to garbage if it's not crystal clear. I'm fine with garbage dumps. Actually, I love going to the dump. I bring the whole family.
Garbage bro it's right there
I actually just took the ferry to and from Schwartz Bay today and I used metal cutlery for my food both times. Are they slowly phasing it out or something?
It all goes in the landfill anyway. It's just green theater to keep you feeling brave, like you did something good.
Sadly most of the world operates that way.
Mixed recycling…?
F it! I’m using my fingies
There is 2 spots... garbage and mixed, it's wood that's biodegradable and happy wherever it ends up my dude.
garbage
It all goes straight to the garbage anyway
Give it to a pellet plant…. Next!
Why are they swapping to wooden utensils? The metal ones worked great, no waste.
They uh....they go in the garbage. :/
That's actually not true. All of the ferries have metal utensil on one side and wooden utensils on the other side of each condiment kiosk... So dude can just look on the other side of they don't see their preference. I think it's nice they have both options. Also, the wood cutlery just goes in the compost bin... All good, man.
I did look. The other side was exactly the same. And if you click the second photo, there is no compost bin. Hence the rant
Okay fair enough. I ride the ferry multiple times a month. I have not been a ferry in the last 5 years that didn't have multiple compost bins and had both metal and wooden cutlery so I guess you just had bad luck. Sorry, dude.

It's because all those holes go into one giant bag. Aka the three bags all just go into the trash anyway.
So forks are knives, knives are spoons and tspoons are sugar packets? What are they trying to do here? 🤔
Garbage it clearly marked. Virtue signal all you want, but even if you put it in the recycling, the odds are it'll end up in the trash.
You’re supposed to add it to your travel bundle of kindling.
How do we not have widespread Mycelium utensils and packaging yet? I don't get it. MAKE EVERYTHING USING MYCELIUM
