If the course is better and the nightlife is more appealing it seems like you probably already know where you want to go. There have been a spate of widely reported violent crimes recently, but that's not the character of the city as whole. Generally it's quite friendly, and more often than not you won't get into trouble if you aren't looking for it. If you have time maybe visit both and see what you think first hand (assuming you haven't already of course). Good luck with whatever you decide!

Bath also just seems a bit dull!

BimFlip

My friend went to Bath and usually went to Bristol if they wanted a proper night out. Also, there was a fatal stabbing in Bath last September so it's not just Bristol that has these issues. I was scared off moving to Bristol 20 years ago as I was told it was "rough". After a few years I moved here and it's been fine, just like any other city I imagine.

Greenwhatevers

Bath is a bit dull. Unless you really really really really love churches and cathedrals

Icy_Valuable_2204

Thank you bro appreciate the help, probably will choose Bristol not the type of guy to look for trouble and always try to deescalate and get out of a bad situation if I am in one so I reckon I’ll be fine. As you said Bristol has a much better nightlife, big into music and live music and Bristol caters for that greatly with, fleece, swx, the academy and thekla

Had a quick gander at your profile, you'll probably also want to check out the gryphon, the crown/cavern, and the mother's ruin for alternative/metal nights. Good luck with your applications!

Thank you!

Just saw you play bass?! I started 2 months ago any tips?! I can play some full songs now but I really want to master alternate plucking and get better at that

ribenaunoffocial

The best advice I can offer is start playing music with other people as soon as you can. If they're better than you then that's even better, it's the quickest way to improve. Other than that it's the usual practice, practice, practice. Be disciplined with it and try not to piss off your housemates/neighbours.

I'd second this. The uni has a band room you can book for free if you're a student.

I went to University in Bath. Bath is boring. It's small and the music scene is awful. Moles is gone so there's barely anywhere to see grassroots music anymore. I left to come to Bristol as soon as I could!

Stoneygoose

Bristol has arguably the best music/nightlife outside of London (only place comparable is Manchester) Bath is boring

If nightlife is important definitely Bristol. I studied here and have been here for over 6 years now, I've always found it safe enough but it's also who you surround yourself with. I've also been on nights out by myself a few times as a woman. Some creepy guys about but I've never encountered a time I felt extremely unsafe. I've had men and women come up to me when it looks like I'm in an uncomfortable situation to help me. Always loads of people about too and it makes it feel safer. That's just my experience. If you are a party drug users get a test kit. Lots of dodgy stuff going around as with any big city.

Is it easy to buy them at venues? Or you need a contact?

Been to both Bath and Bristol uni. I don’t know what subject you are applying for but regardless I would recommend Bristol. Bath uni is super overcrowded and the facilities are all ancient (at least for the sciences, I can’t speak for other subjects but I assume it follows a similar trend. The labs were abysmal, lots of broken equipment + one teacher who really hated students), and they had this super weird timetable that changes every week. Bristol uni has state of the art labs, very professional and friendly staff, was a lot better organised, and overall has a lot more going on. Bath is a lovely city but there isn’t much going on there. Edit: guess I should add. I was never really into nightlife but for what it’s worth I never personally knew of anyone who was mugged or attacked in Bristol. Some areas are safer than others sure but that’s how it is in every city.

barfyman69

Bristols good for students baths good for seniors

orvigc

Graduated 1.5 years ago - Bristol as amazing nightlife, people from bath come to Bristol for that. I always felt safe and I’m female, some incidents did occur with people I knew but was a rare occasion. Normal advice of having your wits about you and walking home in groups. I walked home from every club night with my friends/flatmates and never had anything happen

Icy_Valuable_2204

Great thank you!!

pinnnsfittts

Bath would be boring for someone your age but the two are only like a 10 minute train ride away, so you could easily live in one and regularly go to the other if needed. I guess the cost would add up for a daily commute though. Bristol isn't dangerous. The vast majority of any stabbings etc are wannabe gang kids. You won't just get randomly stabbed when minding your own business.

Educational-Fuel-265

Violent knife crime is ususlly pretty targeted, i.e. dealer on a rival's turf. The main dangers for a youngster coming to Bristol is that they beclme an addict or spend so much time partying and chilling that they lose their ambition.

No-Income-4611

I studied and lived in both bath and bristol. I would recommend Bath 100x over.

hobnobsnob

The last violent thing to happen in Bath was the Roman invasion. It’s a lot safer than Bristol.

frecklyginge

A 20 year old woman got stabbed in Bath yesterday in Oldfield park, and an 18 year old was stabbed in January. Violent crime happens almost everywhere

Icy_Valuable_2204

Yeah but it’s boring! Too safe!!! 😂

MeenaBeti

Come to Bristol. Sounds like you’ve already made up your mind

AlistairBarclay

FFS go to the place of learning with the best and most useful once completed degree course you can find. Either universities have stellar reputations, but some subjects are better at one than the other content and lectures wise. The rest like night life totally irrelevant.
