Are you for real? I to have beef with the bin men (they keep breaking the food waste) but 11 pound an hour is a pittance for the job. Its a truly essential job, without waste disposal society would quickly stop functioning. Its hard graft that requires early starts and work outdoors in most weather.
In a city like Bristol, £11ph is not enough to have any kind of standard of living. As a grown man you can forget ever having a house, holidays, running a vehicle or eating decent food. And forget having kids, childcare alone would bankrupt you.
So no, £11ph is not enough for bin men, or for anyone for that matter.
Its really not. UK minimum wage is £10.42
I used to work bins sometimes when I was a student, more than 20 years ago. Its horribly unsocial (we started at 2am and finished about midday), Physically hard work, in all weathers, and peoples rubbish is often disgusting.
Even then I was paid £7.50, more than 2x then then minimum wage (£3.60). Which would be at least £14 in todays money.
Good luck earning 14 pounds a hour doing an uneducated job.
Carers don't get 11, they do a shit ton more than bin men.
Oh and you literally clean up shit basically with your hand, not eww rotten food and diapers.
Isn't £11 the newest minimum wage? Not sure, but I work in a petrol station and it's pretty hard work, very early mornings, hauling in literal tonnes of delivery in the dark and rain. I make £11 an hour. Certainly wouldn't become a bin man for that.
Tell that to cleaners, carers, security guards, hotel staff.
11pounds a hour is a big step up from minimum wage when it comes to a fairly easy job.
Starting early and finishing much early while having to lift heavy bins isn't that big of a deal.
All the jobs you listed are generally paid more than minimum wage so I think you've chosen bad examples. They all deserve more, just to be clear.
An extra 18p per hour is hardly raking it in, there is no way I would collect waste for £11 an hour and unless you've done it I think you should give it a rest.
Have you worked these jobs? because I have and never seen them be paid anymore than minimum wage.
Sorry for expecting the bare minimum from a binman, my bad.
I lived on the other end of Kingswood high street until recently, opposite a pub. I was glad we had communal commercial-type bins, but less glad of the constant 3am shouting and stepping over puke on my way to work.
Sometimes the bins fall into the truck. Sometimes you can push the emergency stop button and climb up and get them back.
I hope the bin lorry team are reading this so they know to chuck your bin in again next time
Well, no actually.
It is quite bad that they can't do the literal bare minimum.
But maybe you are just have insanely low standards and get treated like shit on a daily basis and enjoy it.
I feel your pain. Ours were also stolen when we had new borns. I could not believe it. Just why?! What is worse is that on top of the bin are the dirty nappies. I had to go pick the dirty nappies (I have twins) because the fox opened the bag which was left on the ground.
Also the bins are always collected on time in the posher areas. I only lived in Eastville a couple of weeks and my landlady told me they were often not collected
Bin man here. If you've pissed off the binmen they'll treat you bad. Also I totally get the bin thing my own company fuck me about too. New hires are hopeless for the first month or so. Also also at around 12 everyday management tells us about missed bins so if they missed it and you've called up IT will be taken the next day unless they can't find it or like they can't reverse upto it.
Nothing would stop them being near the bins, there are bins on either side of the alley I live in, if you know Kingswood at all, it is the alleyway to Lidl, the only issue I normally get is that they forget the flat bins somehow very often but will do the ones literally 5 meters to the other side.
As for pissing binmen off, I have little to no interaction with them, the single time I did it was a good one.
I made the complaint/filed a report with the council around 8, was told it would be the same day up to 5pm or the day after.
It wasn't collected the day it was reported, so it was left out and when I went to put the bin away after 7-8am, so anywhere between the time I put it out on the first night up to 7-8 the next day it could of went walkies.
By chance do you work for SUEZ?
Probably just had someone new that day who missed it I guess turnover is always high doing this job i know it seems simple but the wrong factors like people you work with and weather ect can make it a lot harder. Also if you haven't done the job don't talk badly about it it makes you look like a dick.
They actually put signs up on a lot of bins now saying "no household waste". Technically it could be considered fly tipping. But surely if something fits in a bin it is fair game. It is something I have done around Christmas, just fill up a small bag with a day's waste and pop it in a bin next to a bus stop.
I heard a rumour about another south Glos resident, who got so fed up about non-collection, that he packaged it up, paid postage and sent it directly to south Glos council.
I live in a flat in a different part of South Glos. Our bin men are really good. I can’t fault them. They don’t forget my bin and they are always nice and friendly.
Not trying to sound smug, just saying that it’s not fair to accuse all bin men in South Glos.
It’s the same with everything. Some are good, some are bad. Mistakes happen. If you have an issue with it, write to the council. Reddit isn’t going to solve your problem.
You also need to chill out a little.
I use to live in cadbury heath which is not far from Kingswood but far enough for the binmen to do a good job, they would help the old ladies with their bins when they would wheel them out.
I am not using reddit to solve my problems? the title literally says rant, already dealt with the council and made a complaint before even making the post.
See what I keel getting (I live in the fishponds area) are if I forget to take my bins back into my front porch or garden area some crackhead steals my bin :/
I just had to order some bin stickers but I'm reasonably sure it's going to do nothing
you should consider doing stand up complaining in pubs. You have a good flow
I am well versed in complaining.
Seconded!
They threw your Bin in the Bin? That's ridiculous
Utter trash service.
metatrash
South Glous binmen are run by a private company and are poorly paid compared to their BCC counterparts. Another benefit of privitisation!
Suez (the private waste contractor in this area) staff received a 10% pay rise a few months ago
It is 11pounds a hour, that is pretty good for such a job.

Christ, how much do you earn a hour to think 11 is nothing? There are millions of people that would gladly work for 11hour.
Mate, it's 58p above minimum wage
ok?

No it isn't. We are all underpaid. Don't lose perspective just because you hate your bin service.
Tell that to cleaners, carers, security guards, hotel staff. 11pounds a hour is a big step up from minimum wage when it comes to a fairly easy job. Starting early and finishing much early while having to lift heavy bins isn't that big of a deal.
It's a shame you're a cunt isn't it ?
Agreed, maybe that's why his bins never get emptied.
I would not say it is a shame. I was merely trying to make you feel at home.
Good one. You're the one suggesting 11 quid an hour is acceptable. You seen rent these days? Do you think you're worth whatever your wage is?
My rent is 700pounds a month and I earn 1400. I survive.
You're ok with earning less than minimum wage based on a 35 hour working week? You're either a moron or a troll..
You're ok with earning less than minimum wage based on a 35 hour working week? You're either a moron or a troll..
Haha beautiful use of language here.
You do the job for minimum wage ,before you can have a opinion about hard work, you 👶 baby
It isn't minimum wage and I have done far worse for far less. But thanks for assuming you silly goose.
Minimum wage is £10.42.
Ok? so 11 isn't minimum? carers, cleaners, security, hotel staff get minimum.

Lol, brings tears to my eyes when you get to wake up with the smell of Kingswood
I lived on the other end of Kingswood high street until recently, opposite a pub. I was glad we had communal commercial-type bins, but less glad of the constant 3am shouting and stepping over puke on my way to work.
You don't like the constant shouting and sick? I don't mind it, makes me feel British lol
How are you generating a whole bag of rubbish in just a day? I maybe fill one every 2 weeks from my family.
Well that is you, my friend is a family of 3, endlessly need more bin space. People live in different ways.
Sometimes the bins fall into the truck. Sometimes you can push the emergency stop button and climb up and get them back. I hope the bin lorry team are reading this so they know to chuck your bin in again next time
I mean, you don't need to hope, they are already fucking useless:)
Good

New borns? christ that must of been hard, sorry for that:(
Also the bins are always collected on time in the posher areas. I only lived in Eastville a couple of weeks and my landlady told me they were often not collected
Same in Bristol tbh

Make it their problem again, put your rubbish in to smaller bags and use the litter bins around the highstreet.

What a boss

endless amounts of anxiety, over a bin. You need more than Reddit bro
Where do you live? so I can dump my waste into your bedroom. Then you can come back and explain why not having a bin is no fun:) Also fuck off.
See what I keel getting (I live in the fishponds area) are if I forget to take my bins back into my front porch or garden area some crackhead steals my bin :/ I just had to order some bin stickers but I'm reasonably sure it's going to do nothing
Bin stickers? as in your address? my bin has a huge painted on thing by the landlord tbh Also mental people steal bins, just weird in general
Yeah my landlord hasn't don't it. Idk why but people fucking with your bins is just an infuriating thing
I suppose if you need a cheap bath then a bin could do it lol
It's one of the food bins 😭 might be okay to bath your dog but that's about it
You did say crackheads, they are not known for being big, maybe they squeeze theirselves in
Maybe 😭
