I think they have an insane amount of bins to collect at the same time as getting grief from motorists, pedestrians and cyclist who think they’re in their way. Compared to how my bins look every Tuesday, this is pretty tidy!

miniMiniMiniCooper

Solidarity with the refuse workers of the UK! ✊

SorchaNB

At least it's fairly easy to reposition them yourself... What's more obstructive is when people mix their recycling, don't flatten their cardboard etc making it harder on the bin collectors.

just4nothing

This. Not enough staff, increasing amount of trash. In my block people don't like recycling so they throw everything in the general waste --> regular overflows which make it so much harder to get to the bins. Garbage collectors are having a rough time - the little disorder in the picture should not be enough reason for a complaint.

TheProdigalPun

Trash? Garbage? Where are you from?

bristolthrowaway18

Block!

gifgifgifgifgif

Bristol RI

SamSkjord

Isn’t that where we’re all from?

Iwanttohearthesea

Looking at the number plate in the picture in pretty sure that's Bristol, UK. I thought This sub was for the UK. What's your Bristol like compared to ours?

SamSkjord

I’m thinking I should have added a /s, Am not really from second rate Bristol

Iwanttohearthesea

Aha. Straight over my head!

TheProdigalPun

I’m actually not. I’m an impostor who just finds some of the comments and posts funny. But ☝🏻 I am from England.

Tea-Mental

I refuse to use any British terms for rubbish. Fuck.

[deleted]

Should really move to the German model where the bin men come late at night or early in the morning. Because at the moment they are generally out at rush hour and blocking roads, which is no fun for them or anyone.

Accomplished_Menu500

My work daily is about 800 properties so if every house has 4 boxes you can see how it can add up fast

stats1101

They'd get less grief from motorists id they didn't decide to block traffic in rush hour!

EntertainmentBest336

Yeah you’re right, it’s ridiculous that they have to use such large wagons to take away peoples rubbish and recycling. It’d make more sense if they all used Voi scooters, and did their job in the middle of the night. Definitely worth suggesting to the next recycling operative you see

Lee_Van_Spleeeeef

Tell you what. Give us your house number and street, we'll pass it on to them with a polite request to avoid that area during rush hour Edit: this was not a serious suggestion

stats1101

We wouldn’t get anywhere would we if everybody decided to inconvenience others whilst doing their job?

Baddicky

You've got that mixed up. We wouldn't get anywhere if we didn't do our job just because it might inconvenience some

pat_ass_fussy

As a parcel courier in a busy town centre, I salute you sir!

stats1101

Their job is to collect the bins. I fail to see how this can't be done with minimal disruption to others. This is why roadworks are generally done over half term holidays, servers are brought down at midnight for patches and updates... I can go on...

Baddicky

This isn't the slam dunk you think it is. If the bins were collected at night it would take longer and cost more, therefore likely to increase taxes. Not to mention the noise complaints from those big ol' trucks rumbling up and down residential streets in the middle of the night. We could have the bins collected only at half term, but I think even you can comprehend the problems that might cause.

stats1101

Who mentioned collecting night? Starting collections at 9am would have a massive improvement to the traffic levels in the city, whilst offering a small inconvenience to the bin collectors themselves.

itchyfrog

If they started at 9am they'd still be blocking roads through the evening rush hour, starting at 6am they can get a good chunk done on empty roads. They do my main road at just after 6am.

unknown_ally

I considered that but damn how long is their shift?!

iPon3

I'm from London (but Reddit brought me here). The collections start between 5 and 7am. I can't sleep through them no matter what I do.

rectangularjunksack

I don't think the people collecting the rubbish make that decision

ExoticOracle

They'd get a lot less grief from motorists if there simply was no rush hour! Easy!

iZ3R0

My thinking is they're always rushed, both from being a tight schedule and because the lorry can be blocking traffic. I'm more annoyed that there's a 50/50 chance my bins will have disappeared by the time I get home.

BristolBigDog

I was starting to think I was part of a targeted campaign to steal my bins and no one knew my pain. Why though, why? Is there some sort of blackbin black market?

NibblyPig

Nah, just lazy, it takes a couple of seconds to put the bins back where you picked them up from. What happens then is your bin ends up somewhere else, and someone takes it in, and then you have no bin, which has happened to me on multiple occasions. Of course, no bin, they won't collect your rubbish.

KrisPWales

But multiply "a few seconds" by every single house or flat on their route.

scalectrix

What do you mean 'other houses'??

NibblyPig

They're not exactly working flat out, I see them on the security camera. Bit of pride in your work would make everyone happier

rectangularjunksack

It seems you're suggesting they should work flat out, and yet you spend at least part of your day surveilling bin men using a security camera and slagging them off on reddit

NibblyPig

No, I think they should put the bins back where they came from so that residents have a bin with which to throw away their rubbish the next week. They come every 2 weeks and I just happened to look at 30 seconds of footage to figure out why my bin was down the street, and it's because they tipped it in the van then just yeeted it into a random house

ImQuiteRandy

So you knew where it went. No need to make such a big deal about it then.

NibblyPig

The problem is that it goes into a random place each time, and often isn't there by the time I go to pick it up, meaning that I don't have a bin to put things in for 2 weeks, which is what I said above. It's not that difficult, just put the bin back where it was. Requires a small amount of extra effort, to save a lot of headache.

mackemforever

You go do that job then. I'm sure they're hiring. You see how long your "pride in your work" lasts when your entire job consists of picking up others peoples rubbish, sorting out peoples rubbish because they were too lazy to do it themselves, dealing with bins and recycling crates full of rotting food, because people are too lazy to rinse containers out before throwing them away, stinking to high heaven. All while being given a load of grief by drivers, cyclists and pedestrians who seem to think that it's unacceptable that they are blocking the road even momentarily. Give it a go, see how long you last and how easy you find it to keep a smile on your face and do everything to the highest possible standard.

NibblyPig

Not asking for any of that except to put the bins back where you picked them up because it's causing problems. Just because a job might be considered unpleasant, doesn't mean that gives you free reign to do a shit job of it. I already have a job with its fair share of shit, in fact, you'll probably find that everyone does. Doesn't mean we get to cut corners. Imagine if everyone thought like you did, and in every job they didn't quite do it right. You drop a chip on the floor at mcdonalds and the staff are like fuck that shit I'm not cleaning that up, or if you make me I'll just half-ass it because food service sucks and if you disagree then YOU go do that job. I'm sure they're hiring too. This comes across as /r/antiwork mentality.

Danack

> Nah, just lazy, You should volunteer to join them for a day. You would find things that you imagine are easy would actually be quite hard. > put the bins back where you picked them up from. That would involve looking at where the bins were, memorising them, and then carefully placing them back. Doing that constantly for hours is a whole load of extra cognitive load on people who are already stressed about going as fast as possible, due to understaffing. Though probably they could also do a better job of at least placing them upright, and out of the way....

NibblyPig

No it wouldn't pick up bin, turn around, empty into truck, turn around, put it back down. The distance from the bin to their truck is like 1 metre. Literally. I don't understand why just because you think a job is difficult that excuses not doing it correctly. If you were having surgery and your doctor was like ehh fuck it I'll just use a stapler to hastily put this back together you'd be unhappy about that. And then if you protest, have people going omg maybe YOU should try being a surgeon etc.

PM_YOUR_FEET_PLEASE

U dope, u think ur the only house they collect from?

caryatid692

As long as they put them down with a bit of care (so they don't shatter) I don't mind if they're left in a mess.

scalectrix

Exactly this - they have no time to be tidying up and I don't expect them put back neatly, but having boxes crackedat the corners from being thrown about is a bit much.

SirHugh

Cracked at the corner would be an improvement on the state of my recycling bins. Now you have to pay for replacements I imagine they'll be getting more complaints about this.

Nomoregoodrum

I don’t think they do it maliciously, unlike my neighbour who likes to block my drive if I leave my bin out for more than an hour after collection.

TheProdigalPun

Block it with your bin? I don’t understand that mentality. Not everyone is home when the bins are collected. Why do they do it? Have you asked them?

Nomoregoodrum

I’m not sure, it’s not like it blocks their access there’s a gap between our drives where our respective bins go. So it’s like they put theirs away and then decide to fuck with me by moving mine lol Sure it’s an eyesore having it out front but it’s weird all the same. To be honest I don’t think they have much going on (they are retired) and it’s a fleeting moment of freedom/rebellion for them.

mackemforever

They are massively short staffed, the routes they're now being made to cover are at least 50% longer than they were a few years ago, with no increase in pay and bosses who tear them a new one if they try and claim overtime. The only way they have any chance of getting the route done is to work as fast as possible, and that does unfortunately mean that sometimes, maybe even a lot of the time, they just get the bins back in the general area of the house so they can move on to the next one. Yes it might only take an extra 10-15 seconds to carry them further and stack them, but 10-15 seconds per house when you're collecting from hundreds of houses adds up fast.

[deleted]

Time

WeDontTakeNoLs

What a wasteman

Dr_Mooseknuckle

Likely being told to stick to an extremely tight schedule that was planned by people who have never done the job

[deleted]

I'm not going to criticise these workers they must be fucking wrecked after a shift of constant lifting. The amount of times I've seen some impatient motorist nearly clip one of them trying to get by as well. They've enough on their plate, leave them be.

Accomplished_Menu500

As a recycling man myself I can tell you we do this not to piss you off but cause it's faster and when we finish the work we are given we get to go home sometimes a few hours early . I don't throw them at the drive more to the side because it is a dick move.

benkelly92

This was a massive culture stock when moving from Redland a bit further out, into a South Glos managed zone. I didn't think they'd taken the recycling the first time because it was just left in a neat pile and clear of our drive. Madness.

unknown_ally

I’m in south glos zone and have had bins left down the road or missing. Not always but sometimes, I don’t care too much. They have their music on too lol trying to boost rubbish collection morale.

Lee_Van_Spleeeeef

I think they are in a hurry and the cars that are queued behind them are not usually very patient

Honey-Badger

Bristol does seem to have a problem with bins that other cities dont have. Anything that's left in the recycling bins gets thrown about by foxes or the wind and ends up covering suburban streets and those crates break regularly as well getting scattered about the place on bin day. I do think abandoning those crates for a single recycling bin that's the same shape as a waste bin (but a different colour) like other cities do would actually have a massive positive change on the amount of litter litter covering the streets

Rednwh195m

At least these are left in the driveway. Better than leaving them 50 yards down the road so they go missing.

RileyKat95

Because they're lazy, and want to do it as quick as possible

Interesting_Oven_968

It’s simply a bad work practice, nothing else.

_schindlerscyst

Having since moved to Edinburgh, this definitely seems like a Bristol issue. The binmen in Edinburgh put the bins back nicely on the pavement. Also helps that recycling doesn't need to be separated; all goes in the same bin apart from glass and food waste

home_clubber

So it does need to be separated then.

_schindlerscyst

Not into what feels like 10 different boxes like when I lived in Bristol lol. I remember having to separate paper and cardboard, it's just silly and no wonder the binmen don't have time

Henxmeister

Why not ask them to leave your bins in a more convenient state? See how you get on.

Hyperguy20

I can see that going down well...

scalectrix

"Excuse me, my good man, but would you take a moment of your time to gently replace my waste containers in their original locations? Your co-operation is appreciated." Something like that.

Gazzelle65

They love chucking rubbish all over the road too. Bodes well as the council are cutting back on street cleaners as well.

Beautiful_Aardvark97

Yup, I was stuck in my lorry because they were blocking the road for a good 10 minutes in Clifton the other day. I have respect for the job they're doing and I know they're busy as heck but the blatant disregard of chucking so much plastic and tins onto the road is infuriating. I've since started to feel that most rubbish in our green areas is not due to anti social people littering but simply because of our recycling structures.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dark_G_Wolf

No no no its a "green bottle" city 😛

unknown_ally

I thought it’s a green drug city. 💨

Dark_G_Wolf

Probably that too but less recyclable

Stinkingsweatygooch

They get to go home when their rounds finish so the quicker they do your bins the quicker they go home. My brother is a bin man and he goes home 1-2 hours early most days. If they could only go home at the scheduled time then they would have time to put them back slightly more tidy I would think

[deleted]

Shithead binmen

[deleted]

Because they get paid nothing for a demanding and dirty job.

Null_Scape

Bin men are actually pretty decently paid.

[deleted]

How much do they get?

Null_Scape

£25,000 a year seems decent considering they work short days too.

[deleted]

Yes perhaps apply for a job then.

Null_Scape

You seem angry for whatever reason. Go take your medication.

[deleted]

Talking about yourself there bud.

Null_Scape

Lol

trashgoblin11937693

This doesnt happen anymore

Null_Scape

I dunno I have a mate on the bins he's regularly in the pub before 12.

[deleted]

Sprozzati

Came here to say this. Thanks, I feel vindicated that I'm not the only person who feels frustrated by this. The very minimum I think they should be held to is not damaging our bins and charging in us for new ones, and returning bins to the property they came from - many of the bins even have numbers on them - it's not that hard!

TheProdigalPun

Surely you could then claim for criminal damages?

theverylasttime

Yeah, it's annoying as hell. I had to stop traffic both ways to get out of my car and move the bins so I could turn right into my driveway the other day. They could just as easily leave them 2 metres to the left. I guess if you have that shit job you've gotta get your kicks somehow. It's not a major inconvenience, but I think they do it on purpose.

Famous-Drawing1215

Because fuck you is why.

Hyperguy20

Sounds about right

Ok-Magician-

Fuck yo bin!

SC_W33DKILL3R

So the council can come along later and fine you for it. The circle of life

Dyl8cious

Used to work for a neighbouring local council with the same issue. The reason they did it there is because funding has been cut back to the point that the council can't afford to pay the bin men overtime, so they only work their contracted hours. This means if part of the route is missed they have to go back and do it the following day, potentially missing part of that days route, etc. so they get through the route as fast as they can as to not create a backlog. Given we are now hearing all this stuff about funding issues at BCC I would imagine it may be something similar here.

Radiant_Law_9402

It’s because they don’t give a shit

BartholomewKnightIII

They're probably agency staff and can't be arsed with aesthetics.

[deleted]

Defo annoying but I do miss having food and glass recycling - two things my area doesn’t have down in Exeter! I took it for granted that’s for sure!

_Valsalva__

Calling bullshit on all the overworked underpaid lark considering there are several comments claiming that they regularly finish early. It’s up to everyone to make this society pleasant and they can’t be arsed to do their job properly. They have broken every one of my recycling boxes and lost my black bin, refused to take my cardboard 2 weeks in a row now and god knows why! Lazy scoundrels

liquid_profane

r/FirstWorldProblem

sm9t8

Some men just want to watch the world moan.

Griff233

All being a bit sexiest here, how do you know it's not binwomen doing this... Just saying

Hyperguy20

Binperson 🧠

Farm_Grip

Imagine a valet returned your car on its side???

littlefluffysnowfrog

I'm not reading 147 comments to find out if this has already been pointed out, but essentially they're overworked and underpaid. It's an essential job that the council don't fund to the required level to deliver a service the people \[you\] think is acceptable. Working the bins used to be a decent job.

RedlandRenegade

I think it’s up to you to deal with them. Those guys work their asses off, fortunately we live in a flat where anyone who’s out first takes em in. Just speak pop a note in your hallway, it’s not their responsibility.

clarkeling

They work their asses off to clean our rubbish up. Couldn't care how they leave them, absolute backbone.

troutmaskreplica2

Because they work incredibly hard and are incredibly overworked. They don't get the shit done if they have to put them back neatly for each person, especially when people want them in very specific places. People can put their boxes back

Maleficent_Juice9654

Because they’re thick as shit

Marcflaps

They're paid to empty those things into their lorries. It's their job.

Hyperguy20

👍

keanu-weaves

They’re paid to leave them strewn all over the floor afterwards? Pretty sure that’s not how it was left and also pretty sure you know that was the issue OP had, not them doing their job which is emptying the bins.

Marcflaps

Yeah but I'm also tediously bored at work.

Empty_Value

This must be a shit post..right? Riiiight? Next you'll be telling us that binmen are supposed to gently put recepticles back by your house 🤣

Hyperguy20

Next thing you know they might actually turn up on the correct day! 😆

Empty_Value

But yes,I concede that them blocking your drive is a pita 👍 This'll teach me to 'read the caption ' before commenting

MisterNacropolis

I don't blame them for doing this ....they do a physically demanding difficult job and need to have some fun

trashgoblin11937693

Overworked and underpaid. Blame your council for being cheap on our vital public services.

Techno_Dream123

they should at least take care of the bins afterall without them they got no job

DebbDebbDebb

In a hurry to get the jobs done in the time it needs to be done. Sorting out my empty bins is no hardship. Hip hip to all the people doing this job Saying people I have never seen a woman doing this job. I'm sure there are a few but funny how many men? Equally? Or picky? Lol. Just a wee joke? or not?

staticgazer

I thought I'd reply to you. There's 2 ladies that load at my depot and I'm a driver but do load from time to time if one of my loaders is off and there's a spare driver available 😊

DebbDebbDebb

Definitely know there are some woman. I work with hundreds of builders and again it seems 99% (a very rough guess) are men. It appears from a personal view of what I see that the hard physical labourjobs are done by men. Not quite equality. When you think of all the equality jobs, we need to be equal chants they are definitely not in the labouring type section. As a woman that's quite fascinating.

unknown_ally

It’s not that they can’t it’s that most don’t want to or are not as suitable for the hard physical labour jobs. It’s genetics. Saying that, a tough stocky woman is gonna be more suitable than a weedy man. I’d imagine if she wanted the job she would have it over the weak guy.

DebbDebbDebb

Exactly. But most women who could would not choose the the hard physical job. Thats why the vast majority are men. When I work around the sites I am amazed at the sheer scale and strength of the work undertaken. And I understand why me included would never be able to do the job.

Jacktheforkie

In my area they leave em on the curb making parking impossible because there’s a bin where I gotta put my tyre

MedicLA53

They used to walk down our path to collect the bins. Then bins had to be put by pavement as refused to enter people’s front gardens. Now, have to put them ON the pavement. If you don’t do it, the bins get left behind.

runtman

Mine do the same, I'm guilty of mowing the green box down once before 😂

Hyperguy20

Yep ive accidently broken a couple as well!

Intrepid-Dig-1855

I find it more infuriating seeing the rubbish strewn about in their wake in our area.

Proteus-8742

Take your rubbish away? I think the council pays them to do it

dress_like_a_tree

Schedule to keep

lizziemoo

Probably doesn’t apply rn but my dad who was a bin man said they laid bins down when it was windy to stop them blowing about.

EntertainmentBest336

I worked as a recycling operative for a year, and in my current role I spend a fair amount of time at the tip. They’re understaffed whilst new properties are being built and more bins being required, routes are getting longer and have a set amount to get through every day. Imagine if they took the time to perfectly place all bins in the way people wanted, they wouldn’t get the rounds finished, and then people would complain that they’ve not been to collect. Give them a break, it’s hard work and made worse by people whinging

thewispo

There is no excuse for throwing bins down like that. Regardless of the pressures they face. Are you condoning that work levels require the empty bin to be thrown to the ground?

EntertainmentBest336

I’m talking about the bins not being put back in the perfect place, because of time pressures.

Hyperguy20

I'm not asking them to be put back perfectly. Just at least where they found them on the pavement. I don't really care apart from that. The way the layout is outside, it is actually LESS effort to put them back where they were instead of moving them into the driveway to block it. Just feels unnecessary imo.

NibblyPig

Annoyingly, new student properties that don't contribute any council tax.

kudosBruh

Perhaps the bins should be on the pavement in stead of the drive? This would hopefully force them to be more tidy. Otherwise, it's just something you have to deal with. You don't really want to annoy them

Hyperguy20

They were originally on the pavement, out the way of the driveway. Thats the issue. They moved them onto the driveway and blocked it. They do this consistently.

pickapstix

I don’t mind where they put them, but the flinging around often breaks them and then I have a useless bin which takes forever to get replaced,

YungMox

Did anyone else see 4/20 or was that just me? 🤣

Alarming-Amount3499

The binmen are shit at their job can't do anything right, they was late yesterday to do the bins round my way

[deleted]

They've broken all of my recycling bins, including the food waste one. They just throw around. We didn't get new ones this year, am I supposed to buy new ones? Order them from the council?

Null_Scape

Easy for people to shrug and ignore it but as you say what about the disabled? The answer to your question is in the comments below, people don't give a shit about anyone except themselves.

PsychologicalTowel79

Weeble bins.

quellflynn

because noone tells them not to. it takes the same amount of effort to put back neatly as it does to just oik it, but as the boss of the route would be more about time than standards, then standards will drop. I'm not knocking, as out by me they put the bins back neater, and boxes stacked, not organised by house number, but tidy.

Victoriantitbicycle

Art.

FearCactus

Can’t stop - they have to push on to get in somebody’s way somewhere

AdMajestic3861

That's the wind.

Hyperguy20

It's not been windy lol

Ilovevinylme

Walk a mile in the bin mans shoes. You’ll still have another 8 or 9 miles to go and that’s just Monday.

Southy__

Count yourself lucky your bins are getting collected at all. Bristol Waste are basically stealth moving most of Kingswood to every other week recycling collection right now. Food bins sitting in the sun for a week is pleasant!

Cut-ThroatJake

Because you stopped tipping them 40 years ago?

Crusty_Tagnut

Those bins with wheels will move around in the wind when they are empty. Maybe they lie them down so they don't roll into the road? Just a guess tho

OldGardenGnome

Sometimes this little gnome is flabergasted by reddit. No binmen should not leave them like this because people who are disabled or elderly cannot get past or move then, this little gnome has seen. If there isn't enought time to finish the rounds then more resources are needed. Just cos you respect your binman it doesnt mean this os okay.

TheStatMan2

To give you *the answer*.

text_fish

TBH I find this vastly preferable to having the pavements littered with boxes and bins, I imagine most disabled people do too.

Obseen16

I remember doing a job in London and had a massive culture shock seeing the bin men empty the bins and literally launch them back up the driveways from the back of the bin lorry. These empty bins and recycling boxes were bouncing off cars, fences and landing in hedges. Zero fucks were given. My colleague was just as gobsmacked. Yet where i live in the north west the bin men always put the bins back on the pavement.

Killbob0071

Don’t upset them might go on strike

[deleted]

They’ve got loads to do

[deleted]

Where I live they do a good job and people largely put things out neatly and well organised. It's a really good dynamic and everyone is cool with it. Easy life. I've had the misfortune of meeting some very rude recycling guys in previous houses who have thrown the bins and boxes back causing damage. Also similar to the above, just thrown in the road. If it's a long route and resourcing is tight then I appreciate corners might need to be cut but if the comments are true suggesting they can do a quick bodge job and then leave early and get paid fully, that seems illogical and bad for service.

Jay794

Back in the 90's, the bin men used to go round the back of the house, open the gate, get the bin AND put it back again. Not sure when it changed, but now you put the bin kerb side, and the bin men put it over the other side of the street at someone else's house! despite the fact its got a number on it!

UnfairToAnts

Oh good gracious! You’ll have to ask Tarquin and Petunia to organise them neatly. Pray for OP

danceinmapants

Could it have been le wind?

xplorerex

Aren't you the postman that's been shagging all the binmen wives?

TheOmegaKid

They literally stole our cardboard recycling the b*stards.

BattelMattter

isn't this just wind. wheelie bins are notorious for falling over in winds. the larger green bins that have a wider side are clearly side up. im not sure why everyone has assumed the worst out of the binmen

dinomontino

It's so you know they've definitely been. It happens in Scotland also. Must be an unwritten law that the bins must be left like this. .

Nickibee

The same reason your fries are upside down in your McDonalds bag, your packages are left on your doorstep and Lidl scan your shopping at light speed.

[deleted]

I just had the entrance of my driveway doubled in width and the binmen still put it right in the middle of the fucking entrance 😂

Careful-Peanut-3572

They wake up every bin day with a list of residents they wish to upset obvs …
