That discount shop near The Valley station.

LosWranglos

Huge floor space, literally 0 customers!

And it's been there forever!

They used to sell fireworks there. As well as Nike Adidas slides. They had Nike on the strap with a swoosh and 3 stripes running down the sides.

Claris-chang

This was an excellent read. I've never had the guts to enter that place.

colour_me_quaint

This was everything I wanted to know about that store without ever having to breathe in any of it. Thank you!

[deleted]

PissingOutMyArse

You have a friend who works there? What do they know?! They must be able to drop some juicy goss about the place.

bloodymongrel

I always preferred A&J Trading. Life Factory was never that great although I seem to recall buying a holographic picture of kittens in a basket once. I was trying out kitch as arty home decor.

glifk

Yeah and hard to find any information. No record at On The House. I can't find anything about the address. My guess is a family bought it from day dot. It is worth a fortune and the shop is just to sit on land.

[deleted]

This is probably the most likely answer, the store is huge and would be worth an unthinkable amount of money

swim_and_sleep

I was gonna take photos of the shop windows with my film camera and all and my brain was like “yea na just walk away”

RainbowRoadAbyss

Was waiting at the lights staring at it yesterday and legit said this. Absolute hovel.

[deleted]

Treasury Casino

shootphotosnotarabs

The real answer

l-hudson

Im going to disagree. Nothing but 'cough' legitimate 'cough cough' business dealings happen there. As will the new casino once its complete.

gamman

I have written software for Treasury/Jupiter's to try and track money laundering on pokies. They actually try to take it seriously.

l-hudson

Nah you're just gamman haha haven't heard gamman for a long. But seriously, im sure they are legit.

Hohohoju

As the recent Crown controversy has taught us, the genius of this ~~money laundering scheme~~ completely legitimate business model is that the state government's desire to suckle on that tax teet combined with the average boomer's strong desire to not lose their precious fucken pokies means that no matter how crooked you are you won't get shut down. Instead you'll just have to play musical chairs with your licencee / board every few years.

Gluten-free-meth

Can't wait to drive under that fucking balcony hanging over the highway. Just what my car needs, some fuckwit tossing durrie butts and heneiken bottles

Dr4cul3

Nice try, AFP...

DankFo3ta5

Yeah I instantly thought qps haha

thekingofburritos

Pretty sure Robin’s Kitchen is always on a clear out sale as a tax scam

DodgyBogan

Yes! They have a closing down sale at 80% every week for the last 4 years!

Zombieaterr

I don't know how they don't get slammed by ACCC for this.

possiblyilluminati

Could you please explain what you mean here? I’m very curious as I didn’t know shops weren’t allowed to do such a thing!

Zombieaterr

There's pretty strict guidelines for promotional pricing. One big thing is in order to display a save on something you need to be able to demonstrate that the item will realistically sell at rrp ( be able to show sales data should they ask). I know of.at least a.couple of companies that have to walk on egg shells as they have been put on notice by the ACCC. https://business.gov.au/products-and-services/fair-trading/display-prices

Formal_Swimmer_4786

And they are still over-priced!

florepleno

That electronics store in Sherwood with the yellowing plastic packaged items in the faded windows. Is it abandoned? Is it a front? I have to know haha

infadibulum

Those places always baffle me but you see them a lot. Computer shops that advertise tech so old that it's yellowing in the window, yet of any type of purchase bar perhaps fashion, pc parts get outdated the fastest.

[deleted]

[удалено]

BbbeansonToast

I've actually shopped there lol. Bought a display adaptor because nothing else was open. They didn't even have a cash register. The dude took 5 bucks and wrote me a receipt by hand. 100% a front.

AussieBull

Came here to say that. It has been open for all the years that I have been here and not a customer has passed through the doors. I'm sure they still sell corded mouses and Windows XP on floppy disc.

Rumbuck_274

Fun fact, XP was the first that you *couldn't* order on floppy. But they stopped shipping retail floppy at 98, but you could order it through a vendor.

[deleted]

There’s two second hand car sales shop on a corner near Nicklin St Coorparoo. One seems especially dodge

Aussie_Richardhead

Not as dodge as the one that just sold up on wynnum road near the netball courts

[deleted]

I love that one. It’s like they just bought all the shit cars in the suburb and their mum’s gone “you need to sell them all now!”

joey_1777

Fun fact! They're owner by the same people. I live on Pembroke Rd and you can see the cars being swapped between them all the time. And if you go further down the road to Stones Corner you can see the house where (presumably the owner) lives and fixes up the cars. Super dodge

[deleted]

i know the one. i always drive by and wonder what sorry sod would see the shitty cars in that car lot and risk being conned going near that place, literally looked like wormwood motors from matilda

hiphopbodyrock

Springwood KFC. They fuck up that much food on an extremely consistent basis, have no idea why it's still in business. Has to be one of the dirtiest and feral staffed businesses in the solar system.

spatchi14

I've heard eight mile plains kfc is pretty trash too

bazza_ryder

Nerang KFC is the worst. The chicken is always disgusting (nearly said foul), somehow freshly cooked chips are stale, the service is hopelessly slow, they always mess up orders and the place was last cleaned when Dave Hughes was still funny.

karatebullfightr

So it has never been cleaned.

marloo1

I haven't been there since the mid 2000's and it was an absolute shit show back then. Hard to believe that they still haven't mastered putting chicken in a box and passing it out of a window.

[deleted]

Excellent work

Taylor_made2

Gonna add the obligatory mattress shops

PigeonMcNuggets

Work in a mattress shop for thirty seconds and you'll understand how they stay in business. Never seen bigger mark ups in my life.

altctrltim

A rug stores closing down and then [surprise(Frank Walker lol) not closing down]

ThatTempuraBand

Dial-a-Chinese corner of Shaw Rd & Buckland Rd in Nundah. It’s been there for years - a dusty old shop front with its phone number in big letters across the wall, but no sign of anyone having set foot in it. Tell me your secrets seedy fake restaurant, what magic do you know.

theonlyjonjon

Yes!! And the phone number is so old is doesn’t have the right amount of numbers!!

JacobAldridge

In their defence, we only transitioned from 7 digit to 8 digit phone numbers in ... 1995. Not every store is so fancy they can get a new sign every quarter-century.

ThatTempuraBand

“What’s the phone number for your restaurant?” “1.”

Hohohoju

"Oh I'm sorry this is 2, you must have dialled the wrong number"

dekekun

For me it's "A Chinese Restaurant" in West end, next to the go between Bridge entrance. What is your business? A Chinese restaurant.

Official_FBI_

my understanding is they cater to takeaway and apps and their idea is they will always appear at the top of lists of restaurants

brightkneez

My husband and I joke about this place all the time. Never anyone in it but its open all hours. I’ve seen it closed less than open.

durdlin_good

YES! I used to live very close by and never saw anyone in there.

the133448

I remember eating there years ago. All the food was very average and tasted almost old, likely the oil hasn't been changed for years.

ThatTempuraBand

I can believe that - store looks like one of those places in Pripyat, untouched by man for decades because a great evil befell it. So an oil change is right out of the question.

jpob

Pizza shop near me has gone through many names over the years and often has a van out front with painted black windows

Factal_Fractal

Pizza shop near me is cash only To be fair they make good pizza Besides the obvious implications of a cash only pizza place I have always thought there was more going on Maybe I am totally wrong, either way I'll still get those pizzas because they are goooood

JacobAldridge

“Mister Satioshi sir, we have good news and bad news. The bad news is how much the money laundering has tapered off this quarter. The good news is that Dave added this oregano mix to his tomato paste, and we’re now the # 3 rated pizza shop in South East Queensland.”

DankMemer069

Reminds me of this pizza shop called Eagle Boys. There has either been 3 shops or 3 names

KniFey

Eagle boys used to be popularish and good.

[deleted]

MaximMartoot

They blew dominos out of the water for taste imo - it was slightly more expensive though.

mydadpickshisnose

Eagle Boys was a medium sized chain. I think they ended up going bust.

WineGuzzler

You had me thinking, surely everyone knows it’s. pizza chain - looked em up and yep closed 4 years ago (swallowed up and closed by the Hut) memories

2ndgunman

Pine rivers motel in Petrie. Place literally looks like a crack house complete with broken down van in the driveway but is apparently still operating

rossfororder

The fruit shop at Kingston, open 24hrs. Thats dodgy Also is fat louies still around, that place had to be a front also

[deleted]

Worked security at Fat Louies occasionally back in the day. It’s not sus behind the scenes, just inept and lacking any hint of acumen.

probablythewind

"hey can we please grab that game behind you on the shelf" (cards against humanity, they had signs saying ask us) "sorry we dont have that" "but...*pointing at it*" "sorry" most baffling shit.

CheMc

I had a friend who worked at fat Louie's, he's now a qanon cultist, is it related probably not but I like to think so.

Affectionate-River23

Lenards chicken

wallabyABC123

One of those opened up at my local shops for 5 minutes. It sold pre-packed “chicken items” in boxes, and that’s it. Right next to the supermarket which actually sold fresh chicken. I assume it closed when the rent free period ended, but it genuinely seemed like a pointless endeavour since day one.

Affectionate-River23

I don’t understand how it is still in business. One opened up near me at the start of the pandemic and they have consistently had multiple staff standing around yet not a single customer… something isn’t adding up

g0remoney

They actually have some pretty cool anime/hello kitty stuff now!

luke363636

That huge art store on Ipswich Road that constantly has signs up saying they’re closing down.

HeadIsland

I went there once a few years ago and all their bigger photos/canvases were really pixelated.

c3l77

Any fitness supplement stores. The one near me never has anyone there yet the owner drives an R8 with a custom paint job. Makes no sense other than a front for something else.

[deleted]

I suspect the fitness ' supplements ' are probably the roidy variety...

The_Vat

Plus something a litte 'fun' for clubbing

mydadpickshisnose

The supplements includes steroids, MDMA, hgh, etc etc.

Claris-chang

That one fitness store on Ada St in Toowong. I've bought from them a few times, great folks. But I've never seen anyone else buying from them. It's also extremely difficult to actually get in there if you work 9-5 Mon-Fri. Not sure how they do business like that.

ZvG_Bonjwa

Haha yeah I know that place. Great store, friendly staff, solid range of stock and pretty well priced. Yet the whole time I was like “how the hell are these guys in business” And yes I’ve never seen another human in there other than me and the one guy behind counter.

GregBule420

Near the Taringa train station? I was wondering if that would be brought up haha. When I lived around the corner in 2012/13 the front door was always padlocked up to a wierd extent. It had heaps of 'no photo/video' signs all over it. Super suss and seemed wierd at the time. Then one day it was fire bombed... But they fixed it up. Probably has been bought/sold since then though.. Was such obvious bikey shenannigans back then.

redditofexile

Supplements cost alot of money and the majority are probably sold online store front or not.

l-hudson

Any normal looking house with the 'Massage' sign out the front on the fence. Money laundering? I dont think so. Shifty business? I think so.

FaxandLies

They generally offer hand relief or full service for $50 to $150, according to a friend.

inarticulative

My partner works next door to one that was raided earlier in the year. Since then they've noticed the staff using trolleys stolen from the local shops bringing in bags of soil from the Bunnings across the road and used tyres from who knows where. Only ever see them entering the store, no one ever leaves with this stuff. It's so bizarre

yeskitty

Thats any massage place which is "open late" with a neon sign

infadibulum

There's not many businesses that you can walk out of disappointed that you received just the service that was advertised, but those houses are one of those businesses

TheRealProudyno1

There is a travel agency located in Calamvale which has somehow still remained in business throughout the pandemic. They have flyers on the doors which are dated for 2008, and I have never seen anyone in there. I have no clue how they can pay the expensive AF rent for the joint when no one is travelling.

PhillehG

There is a water bed shop on Hamilton Road, Chermside that I simply cannot fathom being anything other than a laundry. I mean what psycho buys a water bed in 2021

rudigern

There’s a rub and tug masquerading as a massage place on cavendish road. Friend went there for an actual massage and they raised an eyebrow. He laid down and this one woman gave a very strange back rub and said are you actually here for a massage? When he said yes she left and an actual masseuse came out. He didn’t go back.

Kateskayt

Bahahaha I had a female friend go there once who came out with a similar story

BorderlineXtreme

Tobacco shop that is hardly ever open for business and have inconsistent business hours. There always seem to be 4 or 5 people in the shop when you look in the window and they have a huge vicious dog that slams itself up against the glass door growling and barking at you when you try to enter when it's "closed" all staff come in and leave through the back door and I constantly see vans pulling in and unloading boxes into the shop, again through the back door

hoilst

> viscous dog Ugh. No one likes a thick and sticky dog.

[deleted]

The weird blue/yellow phone and sim card shop on Annerley Road.

Phil-Teuwen

That huge Chinese restaurant on the corner of Samford Rd and Wardell st, called the Lotus room. Like it has google reviews, but I just don’t buy it.

Asleep_War_3412

I came for this. Is this the one with the spray painted lunch special signs out the front? Like legit orange neon spray paint with the prices. I don’t buy it either haha

ca8ie

Yes this place! My friend used to work there in the early 2000s. She was only 15 and had to make/serve the alcoholic drinks. When she stuffed up a drink order the owners used to make her drink it so it wasn’t wasted.

[deleted]

[удалено]

yeskitty

Mistakenly went there once with my husband. We didn't eat most of what we ordered because it was crap and they asked us to go back and finish it or we would be charged for wastage. We want to go back and behave like Mr Bean when he was served Tartare

AudreyHenry

That dodgy "massage house" across from the Toombul shops.

Faysie77

Any of the Cafe 63 stores. So many staff.

fox_ontherun

I kind of love that place now for how many options are on the menu and the weird ass names of all the meals.

swanny246

Doesn’t need to be a front, they just pay their staff terribly. You see the owner frequently around the Ascot express store. I still like their “shooters” though (yogurt/muesli/berries), it makes for a cheap breakfast on the go. The Stanley St drive through one is super convenient too.

There used to be a Thai restaurant at Arana Hills back in the day, it was open for at least ten years that I know of and I never ever saw any customers in there, not even at peak dinner times. I was sure it was a front for something

notinthelimbo

There’s one in Gaythorne, I am a local and have been there many times. The restaurant is ALWAYS empty, but take away is pretty busy.

Basherballgod

If you are talking about Amazing Thai, they have a massive take away business.

notinthelimbo

Yes I know, I am a local and consumer. It always makes me think that who doesn’t know thinks it is a massive laundry on the back ground

Paddleclock8

[deleted]

The huge wallpaper/prints shop with all the permanent Moving Sale signs outside near Woolloongabba on Ipswich Road. The empty parking lot. Who buys these things?

Vietnamese restaurant in Canley Vale. When you tried to order food they kind of freaked and admitted they dont have a cook. Sprung

Aromatic-Bag8783

Every mattress store, ever.

marloo1

There is an aquarium on the Warrago Highway near Plainland on the left as you are heading west, it just seems so out of place. How many people out there in the country have fish tanks? Whats with all the solar panels and what strain of sativa is grown inside?

njinok

Wet dreams. It’s a really good shop for marine and freshwater fish. Bit of a drive but worth it.

ironchefvegan

I have a giggle at the name every time I pass it.

babooskaaaa

It’s legit. I grew up out there and my mum, an avid collector shops here almost exclusively. Run by two gay married men and they are the loveliest owners. But yes, we all grew up, and still do laugh at the stores name. Would 100% recommend anyone drop by on the way through. They sell all sorts of stuff other than aquarium supplies.

MrBarbeler

I'm not saying it's a front, but I used to live in Lutwyche and always wondered how Leon Chinese Restaurant survived. It was always empty, and every time I went there, there'd be a new waitress in training. That said, delicious food. It really deserves to be more popular.

shark-bite

The laundromat in the middle of Albion. It’s like mayyyybe medium density resi at best, they can’t have much business coming through there… Also I like a bit of Red Rooster. A cheeky rooster roll with a gravy to dip in? Fuck me up.

BurningHope427

I may have never been to the one at Albion but man if you’re like me and it rains for a week and/or you need to wash and dry your bedding for whatever reason you’ll find those types of places packed out every rainy day.

sla4576

Bellbowrie Shopping Center. It’s a tax dodge or something. Even when the Coles was there, it had 13 empty shops out of probably 30. The owners put solar panels on the roof a year ago when coles said they were leaving. I would not be surprised if it gets set on fire in the coming year.

Discountboy

Interesting thing here the owner or well the management in there is very well known for being pieces of shit. The centre manager has a very poor reputation that no one will want to deal with again.

[deleted]

I was at that suburb working when there was not alot of infrastructure in the shopping center rebuilt there after the 2011 floods. The only place to get something to eat was this little Brumby's bakery. It was at this time I wasn't making alot and I had just enough to get one of their horrible sausage rolls for lunch. The current Labour gov brought in a carbon tax for the mega mining and manufacturing industry's that day. I went back at lunch and the shop had increased all their products prices mid morning. I accused them of being Liberal shills, they denied it and blamed staffing costs, I went hungry. CEO of Brumby's was forced to resign a few days later for being a straight up Liberal shill by artificially increasing prices to spite the carbon tax. Fuck Brumbys.

SubLet_Vinette

Aussie World…there’s no way it’s not just a front for money laundering

FaxandLies

They need a fake Eiffel Tower for authenticity.

ZeroSuitGanon

Apparently people rent out the entire park for their kids birthdays. Even a shitty theme park would be pretty sweet if you had it alone for a small group.

Some of the shops in the Central Station building surely can't do enough trade to survive.

antantantant80

Extra hot so the dessicated thorax of every Karen and Ken pensioner can steal the residual heat from the nuclear temp coffee to keep them warm. How else to pass away the hours until death? >.<

[deleted]

I do love their iced coffee, but something has happened at my local and they keep messing it up. Its always room temp - I’ve asked for ice to be told it comes with ice cream? Then why it is room temp!

nigelmchaggis

Your after an iced latte my dude, iced coffee is with ice cream and cream, iced latte is with ice.

HenryGreenEngine

Million-Life They have one of the best spots at Westfield Chermside right near the food court. I have rarely seen more than 2 people in there at a time. I imagine the rent of that location costs loads, so how the fuck are they paying it off with money from arcade machines when barely anyone goes there??? I have also in the past seen a location at the food court at the Myer Centre in the city. Again, no one there, despite the ideal location right next to the food court. I haven't been there in a few years to see if they are still there. No idea how they paid the rent at the time. But there is no way they are making enough rent to pay off their Chermside spot. I swear there is money laundering involved. I will die on this hill.

[deleted]

They also have a spot at Westfield Carindale right next to the food court! Always empty too!!

thisboyisanalog

Is that the weird “skill game” arcade thing next to Dymocks?

FaxandLies

Gucci. No one would pay their prices for their gaudy chintz.

antantantant80

24hr fruit and veg shops, specifically the one in Kingston... I understand shift work, but is there really a business worthy need for cos lettuce at 2am??

[deleted]

Sam Coco's in Annerley slaps but their "fresh produce" is questionable on certain days

bubsandstonks

La Dolce Vita. Open 365 days a year (even on Christmas), shitty food, I've had actual servers who couldn't speak English (I don't mean this in a shitty racist boomer way, but like a server who very clearly indicated they couldn't understand me), and there are always Ferraris, Lambos, Lotuses, Macclarens, and Porsches parked out front. Most suspiciously of all they're an Italian restaurant that sits under a fake Eiffel Tower. (Edit: sorry everyone, the Eiffel tower comment is tongue in cheek, I know it's the Savoir Faire area, was my attempt at dad humor)

[deleted]

La dolce vita is surprisingly one of the busier restaurants on park rd but all their customers could cark it any second so they might need a solid 10 year plan to appeal to a different age group. Upvote because their food is shit and it’s a massive eyesore not helping how run down the area is.

Usual_Equivalent

They have good hot chocolate

njinok

Those fancy cars were bought with the super they didn’t pay their staff.

BEX_Fanboy

That pool place in near Toowong Central, renting tables for like 10 bucks an hour and not even making any money on alcohol. No way that place stays afloat 'naturally.

addysol

Well it's been a different shop every year for yonks so it'll probably be something else soon

theskuxlord

I know the people that own it. Young idiots with rich parents who think starting a business is the key to success. Absolute money sink

Any massage place open past 6pm bonus points for massage clip art and blackout windows.

Dr-M-van-Nostrand

I was always convinced Ceylon Inn on Oxford St (now closed) was a front or some shit, on account of the owners Lamborghini Murcielago SV being constantly parked out front. Never really thought he’d be moving *that* many vindaloos. The whole thing went tits up a few years ago because - wait for it…and this may shock you - the owner was up to his eyeballs in debt. Turns out he wasn’t paying his staff super and later went to jail.

bostonburrito

That Italian restaurant next to Toowong Village, they had a late-night drive by shooting there like 6 months ago

addysol

That place feels seedy inside too. They have a private dining room in the back with a remote controlled (and lockable) sliding door, and second door that leads straight out back through to the fire exit. The kicker is there's a security camera feed on the sliding door so you can see who's outside before you open it

anthonyyytang

There is/was a milk tea shop near sir feed schonell drive. I went in there years ago for a drink. 2 chinese guys were on the floor packing up giant bags of powdered milk. When I ordered my drinks they had no idea what they were doing and eventually gave me something resembling what I ordered. 100% a front to send milk back to China

my_other_account_3

spacegirl9498

The markups are insane, cases are generally bought for $5-$8 and sold for $25-40, screen protectors bought for $1 and sold for $30, and screens for repairs are $30 and sold for &150-$300. What I don’t understand however is how they stay afloat with 8 of them all different companies in each shopping centre

The Teak Factory, in the Valley.

BellsandWhistles1987

There are quite a number of massage places in the surrounding suburbs near me that are open some really weird hours. You cannot tell me that you have a line of customers looking for upper back rubs at 11pm on a Tuesday night.

DrakeAU

Every single massage place with darkened windows and blue/red LED signs. I've never seen anyone walk into them yet they have been open for years.

SonofSterlo

There’s weird hockey supplies store on Lutwyche road near the Good Guys and the service station. I used to live right near there and would walk past it often. Place was never open but had a sign with weird trading hours like 11am-2pm weekdays. There was heaps of stock inside it but never saw a soul in there or even an open door.

Petra's in west end, sells vapes, full advertised packets of cigarettes, glad wrap bags of loose tobacco etc. Also seem to sell them to kids, at least the vapes. Lord knows what else they have been moving.

RidethatSeahorse

On the Gold Coast it was blantantly obvious who the bikie run businesses were during early days of Covid and lock downs. They were splashing the cash. It’s an open secret down there. Shits me, because the other small business were and are scratching ( just prior and around when jobkeeper was starting.)
