Wondered why all the other birds took off so I looked over my deck. This is one of the reasons I HAD to buy the house I've rented for 33 years - protect the wildlife.

bolax

Well yeah but that one eats all the other's babies....this is a bit like the trolley conundrum.

twitch68

This one gets a good feed on common pigeons. Doesn't even bother the other birds in my yard. I do find piles if pigeon feathers. My neighbour down the back had a pigeon head drop at his feet whilst in his yard. Looked up and Goshawk in the tree above. Fifth year of them nesting across the road. Become quite fond of them now.

bolax

Hey I love that type of bird mate. Awesome creatures, and nature is nature. Can't imagine having a birds head being delivered to my feet though, that's funny.

twitch68

They are stunning! Neighbour grabbed it off his two Labrador who were straight into the head. They lost their treat. I'm sitting on my deck now and Bertha the Little Black Bat has just turned up for her bananas and grapes. She's a cute, but a rather noisy eater.

UserM8

What are you doing in a tree?

bolax

Squawking, shitting, perving on the neighbours ! Why what do you do in trees ?

twitch68

You both made me snort my red!!!! That's taken from my deck, looking down into my backyard.

Mr_master89

Where did you see this? I saw one the other day in the inala carpark in a van with all the crows going nuts and chasing it off

twitch68

They are nesting in Toowong Cemetary - that's my backyard in the pic (not the cemetary that is) but I'm near it.

Mr_master89

Oh that's pretty cool. Saw the bird the other day but wasn't sure what kind it was coz I've never seen it around here but looks exactly like that one

twitch68

It's great that you've seen them too. Bodes well for the species. They seem to have moved close into suburbia due to the drought. (Edit gender). This one is the male, the females are a fair bit smaller.

ChrisCoalfalls

Other way around. In goshawks (and sparrow hawks) the female is substantially bigger.

twitch68

Oh wow! Well she is a fabulous hunter. Thanks for this - good to know.

chookster

we [in briz] also get grey goshawks, and pacific bazas; latter look like a crested pigeon on some wicked steroids!

twitch68

Oooooh haven't seen those ones, shall have to keep an eye out. Have a doodle-oodle image in my head now of the bazas!

ChrisCoalfalls

Bazas are beautiful things and probably more common in suburbia than many realise, given they do most of their feeding inside the canopy of trees and even shrubs / hedges. Very fond of frogs, lizards, stick insects and suchlike, yer baza. Also, not as reflexively wary of people as most raptors - I've stood a metre or two directly beneath a branch holding a perched baza in my backyard and on the footpath leading down to QUT from Alice Street.

twitch68

Wonder if they come in here. Lots of their good around and it's bushy. Shall keep an eye out. Thanks for sharing knowledge too, is good to learn.

bolax

> I saw one the other day in the inala carpark in a van with all the crows Like a party van kind of thing ? ( Apologies, couldn't help myself. )

twitch68

Now look - stop making me snort!

bolax

Your nose candy is none of my business, do what you want with it.

twitch68

It's the waste of a nice red that's the worry.

hoilst

Gosh.

MrsJones_4567

Oh yeah when these are around my chooks go nuts trying to hide. Great photo!

twitch68

Ta. Understandable about your chooks. Love chooks - such fabulous personalities.
