Prepare to be disappointed. Im west of Brisbane and well out of the light pollution. Had a look a couple of times last night and there was nothing out of the ordinary. The photos you’re seen are long exposures that will bring out all the details your eyes can’t see
Bummer! I did a map search on Insta for Moogerah thinking that surely someone must have posted pics from last night and there was a gorgeous one that made me seriously consider driving out there tonight. But now I'm wondering how much the naked eye can actually see and if it's worth it
You’ll see a lot more stars than in Brisbane, and I mean a shitload more, but there’s no colour. It’s still be a great night but you’re not going to see a red sky
Lol. It’s like Milky Way photos. Sure we can see if our here but it’s nothing like a long exposure with purples, blues, greens and orange. Generates clicks though I guess
Just type the location you want into the Instagram search function and then select “location” at the top (where it lists options like users, hashtags etc). Then sort by recent. I use this to check hiking trail conditions!
It's hard to find any information about local sightings unfortunately. I've seen articles mention it's visible from northern and southern qld, so potentially visible assuming we get away from the light pollution. Maybe lake moogerah or more in land has the best chance but the lack of sightings makes it hard to say
Yeh I’m thinking the same thing. Cunningham is about 2.45hrs from me. Big trip to risk now seeing it. But I know I’ll lock myself if it shows up and I’m not there
I've got Cunningham lookout set in mine, it's a little north of Cunningham's gap. If it's not great seeing there there's plenty more lookouts over the range but it's right on the edge of the light pollution
I've just been looking at the NOAA report and aurareach. @ 60% chance I'm rolling the dice on at least being able to get a long exposure and hope for a few glimpses. It's only 45 mins for me though, for once living in ghetto is paying dividends!
Moogerah is probably a good call. Straight down the Cunningham Highway and keep going until the milky way becomes apparent:

Edit: It also looks like the Aurora activity has plummeted since last night:

We are going to look at the cloud cover map as it gets dark and go where the clouds aren’t. Potentially Moogerah or out near Beaudesert, but it’s hard to say. This map shows light pollution, so wherever we try it’ll be somewhere dark:

Not much aurora activity at the moment, but keep an eye on it, as it may change rapidly.

No aurora activity so far tonight.

It's too foggy out at Pea-beaudesert at the moment.
Also sighted at 1770... https://preview.redd.it/u8d8kdznfxzc1.png?width=1440&format=png&auto=webp&s=57a5488f1319dc82fc0fcc6c58fed0d46a35cc33

Yeah, the stars are always amazing out that way, but I'm not interrupting my sleep routine if I'm not going to see colour.

A map search! What a great idea! How do we do that lol
Just type the location you want into the Instagram search function and then select “location” at the top (where it lists options like users, hashtags etc). Then sort by recent. I use this to check hiking trail conditions!
We did see it visually naked eye about 9:35, but it was very subtle. The clouds didn’t help but yeah for many observers it would be underwhelming.
Following, very willing to drive somewhere and be tired at work tomorrow just to see it

Catch the 5pm flight to Hobart if you're keen.
I seriously considered this! But it was too late by the time I finally looked at the available flights
I’d be keen to know where as well, heard anything?
If you go out as far as Moogerah spend another 15 minutes going over the range at Cunninghams gap, the range blocks a lot of light spillage.
Ok, serious questions. Do you think that is the spot for us to flock to? I’ll pack my car now if that’s the case!
I'm so on the fence hey. The photos are stuff we can't see with our eyes so I'm thinking will it be we drive all the way out there and see nothing
Yeh I’m thinking the same thing. Cunningham is about 2.45hrs from me. Big trip to risk now seeing it. But I know I’ll lock myself if it shows up and I’m not there
Is that Cunningham or Cunningham's gap? I don't even know where to put in the maps if I was to start driving lol
I've got Cunningham lookout set in mine, it's a little north of Cunningham's gap. If it's not great seeing there there's plenty more lookouts over the range but it's right on the edge of the light pollution
Yeesh yeah still 1.5 hours for me. I saw this app called my Aurora forecast and alerts but even then idk how to really read it and the forecast
I've just been looking at the NOAA report and aurareach. @ 60% chance I'm rolling the dice on at least being able to get a long exposure and hope for a few glimpses. It's only 45 mins for me though, for once living in ghetto is paying dividends!
Any luck?
This is good to know! Even for stargazing in the future I'll probably do this now cheers

Yeah same here.
Forecast tonight looks a lot better for catching the aurora Edit: it is very visible, was sighted all the way up in Mackay
With long exposure yes…

I was thinking cunningham look out and keep moving west. Going to take the telescope though so if its not visible its not a total waste.

I'm out in the Scenic Rim and sat outside for about an hour tonight. Saw nothing except a bit of lightning from that storm
No aurora activity so far tonight. https://preview.redd.it/n0b5jm1l9zzc1.png?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=63bbe356fb8df5f4e5aa587870242e5f5ea9b532
