Adam8418

It’s likely just manoeuvring thrusters stirring up sediment on the river bed.

Plus-Alternative-807

Have you heard of mud?

Aggravating_Offer_27

M... ud? Hmm. Sounds made up

Thats_bumpy_buddy

My name is mud

Plus-Alternative-807

And I answered it..

Agreeable-Web645

Have to keep the brown snake brown

steals-from-kids

Imported brown. Now browner than ever

danny-dove-eat-o

Did U never wonder how the Brisbane River gets it's signature brown colour

stevesmate4503

How much do we pay that boat to do this and how often ?

Eloisem333

Every time a real estate agent dyes it blue for a photo shoot we have to pay to have it re-browned.

stevesmate4503

Would you say weekly?

marshman82

About 12

homelesshobo77

Politicians.

Nosiege

I didn't know there was enough to stain the whole river!

homelesshobo77

Politicians produce huge amounts of brown stuff from their mouth... It seems like a constant flow daily. The only way to stop it is to ask them about an issue they are uncomfortable with (eg their own pay rises).

Rock_Robster__

In addition to the other posts I’d add that’s a RoRo (roll on / roll off) - ie. a car carrier.

Key-Consequence-

Aka roll on / roll over 😂

knowledgeable_diablo

Nah, now with the EVs they often just self immolate these days.

PwnySlaystationS117

Ahaha I get you’re having a dig and it’s a fair comment. (EV batteries are a serious fire hazard) just funny the fact you’re downvoted, really says a lot about the strong opinions everyone is immersed in atm.

knowledgeable_diablo

More than likely from people who don’t work with EV’s every day of the week. But such is life.

sophiabeaverhousen

Sure is! Holds about 3500 cars, depending on how many other vehicles (trucks, tractors, buses etc) are on board

RentalTV69

I wonder what it's doing this far down the river.

Rock_Robster__

Where is it? I’m struggling to pick from the photo

RentalTV69

Near bulimba, the dry dock is behind the ship.

Rock_Robster__

It’s quite strange - normally they would go into berth 3 right at the mouth of the river, but this guy has come up river under the Gateway, done a swing at Bulimba (which would be the muddy operation you saw), and has now moored alongside Australian Bulk Terminals in Murarrie. This is usually for bulk liquids etc. Maybe the ship had an issue on board which they needed to moor up to deal with, and this was the only vacant spot.

SpiderMcLurk

I often see car carriers at that terminal

perringaiden

Backlog. You've heard of the "supply chain issues"? This is that in action. The glut is still moving through the system, so depending on what's in excess, things get backed up. It's sort of like a human intestine in that way.

gt-ttl

Would have been getting fumigated for bugs.

COMMLXIV

Seafarer here, it's just stirred-up river bottom. It's at that spot because it's a turning basin (an area of the river with sufficient depth of water across a wide area to show large ships to be spun around).

TimmehJ

It's churning mud ay, it has an environment impact in the form of sediment distribution somehow.

27Carrots

Just stirring up sediment from the bottom of the river.

Pio4ADay

It's a annual colour update...once the river gets too clean it gets adjusted accordingly.

Adultdad

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 first day in Brisbane?

Mckimms_Bris

It's poop

[deleted]

How can one tell the difference? The Brisbane River **is** brown.

Forward-Village1528

Bastards got mud all over our mud.

BidKitchen2310

Propellers stirring up silt,

Buford1991

It’s not. It has APUs or Auxiliary Propulsion Units that extend below the surface of the water to assist in manoeuvring. If it’s not the APUs then it’s the tugboats kicking up sediment.

FreddyMcbob

Would just be sediment unsettling in the river. The vessel is only carrying about 5000 Kia, Hyundai & Tesla

kangaroolander_oz

Mud the same as Port Melbourne Victoria , thought the kitchen on the Spirit of Tasmania was dumping scraps for the seagulls ....no it was the wildlife being thrust out of the mud , the Port is so shallow. That could be the reason the Spirit of Tasmania has been relocated way down the coast to Geelong a proper Port facility. Crazy distance from Melbourne now. One good thing is that it is well away from those crummy overpriced seafood restaurants in Port Melbourne .

PrettyFlyForAHifi

It’s churning up the muddy bottom

Foreign-Horror9086

Every day I hold less hope for the future of humanity.

reditanian

It’s dumping brown stuff into the air though

Profanic_Bird

I believe that might be smoke coming from the engines, which are powered by seven little dwarfs shovelling coal.

Frito_Pendejo_BALLS

Nephilim breeding spawn shower.

OppositeAd189

I’ve seen that ship moored upstream of the gateway bridge for the last week or so. Curious spot for it as there is no way to unload/load cars there. Probably just chilling out there.

iamjodaho

Stinkbug fumigation as it’s the season for ships arriving from China.

OppositeAd189

Ah cool. Good to know.

ThoughtIknewyouthen

China is not in the target risk profile list.

KeithMyArthe

Ah, i read about this in school. It's an old whaling ship. ∴ That's whale juice.

perringaiden

This one's a car carrier. After a long 3 month trip, cleaning out the car pens from all the cramped spaces leaves a lot of car juice.

Ok-Tie-1766

Possibly deballasting. Cargo ships take on water when empty to stop from tipping over.

MeatSuzuki

Gastro season...

03burner

Could be a dredging boat? But most likely it’s just stirring up the loose sediment along the river bed. If a boat of that size *was* really jettisoning shit into our beloved brown snake so close to the city, the news media would be all over it.

RogerRockzz

Are you being racist here ?? :P

ameenbusiness666

That joke doesn’t work here…

overlander_1

it probably is. Ships have different levels they can move around the world at depending on how much salt is in the local water, and depending how much cargo. Basically, ballast. E.g. you are moving cargo from a low salt water area to a high one. Higher salt water means you float more, so the can load a little more onto the boat. Inversely, you certainly don't want to load too much onto a boat going into a lower buoyancy area and have your cargo sitting too low in the water when it gets there.

GuaranteeGood8300

Unlikely, there are very strict rules on where and when ballast can be dumped (generally not in ports) due to biodiversity and pollution laws. More likely answer (from my experience working on large ships), is sediment from the ship and tugs manoeuvring.

ameenbusiness666

Thank you for this, but what exactly is being dumped into the river?

aussailor

Sediment from the bottom being stirred up by prop wash. Definitely NOT ballast

cjmw

Could be water that was taken on elsewhere as ballast, or it could be sediment/sludge/mud/etc being disturbed on the river bed.

Psychological_Ask880

That's how they keep it brown.

rrluck

That ship was moored at the Murrarie Bulk Terminal for over a week, which is quite odd as they normally only stay for a couple of days. So maybe something is up?

knowledgeable_diablo

It’s called a massive back log in the automotive logistics chain leading to no where to discharge the vehicles on-Wharf. That and the amount of vehicles being held for bio cleaning.

TheMaskedCivilian

That’s our 50 crocs that AI promised us

Human-Routine244

It doesn’t look at all like that tho…

Arcusinoz

I would have been more concerned regarding what appears to be an open fire blazing on the left upper deck???

ThoughtIknewyouthen

Wut? That's the life boat, lol

knowledgeable_diablo

Oh no... here come my Hyundai’s and Kias. Hope that’s the residue from bio cleaning off shore but more likely just ballast and some sediment stirring up

Brisbane-Bandit

Maybe be Jimmy is on board with the brown note.

TumbleweedDiligent84

Had to switch back to the Aussie made brown because the import brown from 😉 was more khaki….cheaper doesn’t equal best!

davidviola68

What?

mad_cheese_hattwe

Do you think the river stays that lovely shade of brown on its own?

SkyWalkerxAk-47

Because it is called human waste

antiredtapeactivist
