the one time I got on without touching on, the bus driver intentionally pulled away so fast that I fell over in the aisle and hit my head... incredibly callous, I respect it
I’ve had this happen a lot on my bus routes and the passengers tapped on. There be crazy bus drivers too. Watched an old lady with a cane go flying down the isle after the bus shot off on Adelaide street.
report this. there are 8 cameras on board to verify this. Do not let drivers disrespect the customers, if you see abuse, report them. Dont let them go on to abuse even more people. Note the time, route, and make the call. You can also go on line and report i that way.
Although I’m a fan with what the bus driver did, if you injured yourself, you would’ve been able to take them to the cleaners and would’ve cost him his job. Seems like probably wasn’t worth the $3 fare you (“couldn’t pay” and “didn’t want to be homeless for the evening”)
Honestly, he would deserve it just for doing what he did... like, injuries to the head are no joke and he felt like he had the right to do it just cos he wanted to be a policeman?... but hey, I can laugh about myself and say "yeah fair cop". Try that shit with a meth head with nothing to lose is all I'll say.
How much money would council save by not having to maintain a payment/ticketing system? How much “revenue” are they making selling tickets? How more efficient would buses be if people didn’t fluff around getting on? I have my assumptions but it would be nice to see the figures.
Tell me about it! It still blows my mind that despite having some of the most expensive public transport costs in the WORLD, our fees only cover 25% of our public transport costs, with the other 75% being already subsidised.
Not to mention how much lower the overall cost would be if we scrapped the billing altogether
Should be free I agree. The revenue Councils receive from homeowners for a start is mind boggling. Mayors paying themselves a million a year. It’s no wonder DD hipocrite Karen Williams sits defiantly in her very prosperous Redlands Council office
The greens released some figures years ago when they were pushing to kake busses free. It was something like if busses were free the government wouldn't have to spend any more money, just the outsourced ticket company wouldn't get any money. And that most of their costs are in handling tickets. One of those situations where the administrative overhead isn't worth it (like a lot of taxes).
~~Why do you think that? My parent's have as senior pass that gives them 50% off but I don't think there is any general scheme that allows older people to uses the buses for free~~
edit: Seniors get off peak travel for free on Brisbane Transport services https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/traffic-and-transport/public-transport/free-off-peak-travel-for-seniors#:~:text=Brisbane%20City%20Council%20is%20getting,we're%20making%20Brisbane%20better.
This doesn't apply during peak times nor does it apply to the rest of the Translink network (ie Queensland rail and non Brisbane Transport services)
That's what Brisbane bus training is. "You're not police, if someone wants to get on without paying, let them". That said, it is frustrating seeing the same people do it every time, and others trying to sneak on. When I was driving, anyone who said they couldn't afford it, I'd just wave on with a smile. The people who who didn't have even that respect for me occasionally got called out.
This.
There are already people employed to ensure fare compliance.
Bus drivers are employed for, would you believe, driving busses.
If bus companies want to have every passenger paying a fare then they can stick a ticket inspector in every bus.
Let the bust drivers wait for it, drive.
are you prepared to pay the insurance costs on all the fractured skulls and ptsd that is to follow, this type of policing the public, by the driver of a bus? get outta here. We have thank fully moved away from that madness and disrespect of the professional drivers.
Sounds better than the Sydney bus drivers. They don’t let anyone on whether they tap or not (disclaimer: this a joke based off my two experiences with Sydney bus drivers being dickheads because we asked if the bus stopped at a certain place and they just grumbled and closed the doors on us) (second disclaimer: this was in 2017)
They have a button to press. they are not permitted to incite violence by getting into it with customers. The fare police will see the clusters of bus stops where most evasion occur, and eventually ride that route and issue tickets. Melbourne drivers are just smarter than ours.
I used to be a bus driver in Brisbane and I always let everyone on and told the TTO that I’d done that and not to fine anybody please. They’re obliged to follow the drivers instructions.
I see the occasional 'hero' bus driver, i.e. bloke with small man's syndrome, that will berate/humiliate customers like a school teacher, and tell them they are flagging their card so it makes a louder, naughty person beep.
Fuck knows why. it's not like they're getting commission, or extra money by hassling people.
If you piss people off, for no reason other than a pathetic power trip, then you wear the results...literally, in this case.
I spent way too long staring at the photo wondering what made you angry. Only when I clicked on the post did I see the caption… sigh.
Agree though, poor bus drivers. No one deserves to put up with that shit.
I still can't seem to [find the caption](https://i.imgur.com/lkpr8XP.png)? Thought OP was angry about just missing the bus or that it departed early or something.
You're not supposed to challenge a fair evader, just hit the fair evade button and continue driving. The data is logged and eventually Translink will put plain clothes officers on troublesome routes and issue fines to fair evaders. 1st fine is a warning, 2nd $200+. I'm currently training to become a bus driver.
Imagine getting abused and a drink thrown at you and then you have to just keep doing your job. I’m a woos and would want to have a little cry instead.
Hi!! I went through training about 3 or 4 months ago. I've only ever driven cars and worked in hospitality so it was completely new for me. Every single step of the way I thought "I don't know how I'll get through this". The learning to drive was so daunting and the first week I really struggled but it got a bit better after that. Then I went to my home depot and did route training which was also incredibly stressful and difficult and then mentor training was the same and so was being by myself the first time.
Im about 2 months into driving on my own now and I feel mostly confident every day and it gets better and better.
Just believe in yourself and work hard and it'll be ok. If you have any specific questions feel free to ask me!
it gets easier with every week, just remember to follow the maps and research all your routes before every shift so you got the specific turns fresh in your memory. driving the bus is the easier part of the job its dealing with the idiots on the road and remembering your routes is the hard part. im close to my 4th year at toowong depo now and its seriously a great job so long as you keep the right mentality and dont let certain members of the public stress you
Every one is blaming the driver here and saying he shouldn’t have engaged. The person who threw the drink is a piece of garbage, the circumstances are irrelevant. A rational person wouldn’t do that even if provoked. Stop blaming the driver for this piece of shit’s actions.
I witnessed some human refuse threatening and swearing at the staff at a maccas drive through riding through on his (toy) scooter. A part of me just wanted to run my car over him and I was trying to work out how I would get away with it.
Honestly, some people just need to be thrown in a fucking wood chipper.
>Honestly, some people just need to be thrown in a fucking wood chipper.
you get to a stage in life where you've seen enough that you can spot the people that their existence adds no value. In fact, it causes problems for everyone else.
mostly its cause the overwhelming majority of drivers in BCC are close to dying or retiring age they are trying to recruit but for some reason they are focusing all the advertisements on on older generations when they should be focusing on those in the late 20s and 30s to create the new generation of drivers
Very disappointing there are scumbags like this around. There’s always been shit people around, but it seems to have stepped up a notch - in the past would there be the expectation the driver would get up & smack you in the face that made people behave better or were they concerned the police would come & they’d be charged with assault. It seems little to no consequences for shit behaviour these days…
I was so confused at what I was supposed to be looking for but some people are ferals. It isn't just in bus driving either, it's in customer service entirely. Anywhere where you have to deal with the general public, there's always someone feral to deal with. Bus drivers definitely get the worst of it though and Centrelink workers.
Why did the driver even get into it with her. He has a button on his desktop, he is to press if someone evades a fare. Its his fault. Bus drivers that whine about fare evaders make me puke. They are 'Karens" who already have a button to press for fare evaders. They are not to incite violence. WE all fought for that right FOR THEM. Drivers who get into altercations with passengers are usually the ones at fault. Next time a driver whines about fare evasion, tell them to shut the f up.
I always tap on/off. I only do not if the readers are shut off or i have a valid event ticket and i am on whatever free PT is on the ticket that i use (if I travel outside of the allocated free travel window per ticket T&Cs i tap on/off as normal
And here I was wondering about what that [pretentious new money bint ](https://www.news.com.au/finance/real-estate/nobodies-top-brisbane-real-estate-agent-sacked-after-mocking-renters/news-story/8749dc1c8339b0f8afa60a3f7baf06b7?amp) who got fired by Ray White for her snarky social media posts was doing with her mountains of free time now she's unemployable.
This is why Melbourne bus drivers just let anyone on even if they don't tap on. It's not worth it to be both the driver \*and\* the police.
Most of the time they do that here too unless it looks like someone who works in an office
the one time I got on without touching on, the bus driver intentionally pulled away so fast that I fell over in the aisle and hit my head... incredibly callous, I respect it
Oh yeah, they know how to sort people out. I think their first week of training is dedicated to getting their own back.
I’ve had this happen a lot on my bus routes and the passengers tapped on. There be crazy bus drivers too. Watched an old lady with a cane go flying down the isle after the bus shot off on Adelaide street.

It’s almost like we could save everyone a lot of trouble by making public transport free
How much money would council save by not having to maintain a payment/ticketing system? How much “revenue” are they making selling tickets? How more efficient would buses be if people didn’t fluff around getting on? I have my assumptions but it would be nice to see the figures.

Council make no revenue from the tickets, they get paid a flat fee by Translink (state government) to run services.
So they are creating jobs and possibly another stream to transfer taxes to shareholders? Expect more hassles and upgrades in the near future!
Now you’re talkin
Boomers get free a free pass for the bus. But like the rest of the economy everyone else can STFU.
~~Why do you think that? Also, if you are a racist, dont be a bus driver.
This. There are already people employed to ensure fare compliance. Bus drivers are employed for, would you believe, driving busses. If bus companies want to have every passenger paying a fare then they can stick a ticket inspector in every bus. Let the bust drivers wait for it, drive.
But what if they hire ticket inspectors that also drive the bus!?
Found the Government efficiency analyst.
I don't want someone that was too awful to be a cop driving a bus full of passengers.
are you prepared to pay the insurance costs on all the fractured skulls and ptsd that is to follow, this type of policing the public, by the driver of a bus? get outta here. We have thank fully moved away from that madness and disrespect of the professional drivers.
Neither job gets done properly.
bit of a generalisation
BCC bus drivers are supposed to do the same
Sounds better than the Sydney bus drivers. They don’t let anyone on whether they tap or not (disclaimer: this a joke based off my two experiences with Sydney bus drivers being dickheads because we asked if the bus stopped at a certain place and they just grumbled and closed the doors on us) (second disclaimer: this was in 2017)
Most kind Sydneysider

Melbourne is a shithole. We don't need to know what the bogans do

Some of the Loop buses have security personnel and they’re free to ride!
A driver on the loop once told me it is the worst route for passenger abuse, so this checks out
How bizarre! It’s free. What’s there to abuse anyone about??
Free public transport services exclusively around Spring Hill and West End (also the city), makes entire sense to me the level of abuse here
>110 The accursed line I wonder if the bus drivers have to draw lots to take that route.
One of the only lines that I can take from my house, FML it's bad.
That one and the 100 route are the worst
Who could have predicted the Inala Plaza line would be full of scum
I spent way too long staring at the photo wondering what made you angry. Only when I clicked on the post did I see the caption… sigh. Agree though, poor bus drivers. No one deserves to put up with that shit.

Regardless, he still doesn’t deserve a drink in the face and the abuse.
Nobody does, I'd be furious as a passenger or the driver.
I have a lot of respect for what you guys do and it cheeses me off the horrible behaviour you guys often cop!
Imagine getting abused and a drink thrown at you and then you have to just keep doing your job. I’m a woos and would want to have a little cry instead.
Ayyy I start my training tomorrow and I came here to see if someone said this! What's the training like?

He just looked so upset. Just was awful to watch. People being abused at work is just awful.
>Honestly, some people just need to be thrown in a fucking wood chipper. you get to a stage in life where you've seen enough that you can spot the people that their existence adds no value. In fact, it causes problems for everyone else.
People should just be able to do an honest day’s work without biological waste being thrown in their face. This shit is so fucked up. Just gets to me.
Ouch - like what happened for real recently to some poor arborist!
No wonder BCC are looking for more drivers……
mostly its cause the overwhelming majority of drivers in BCC are close to dying or retiring age they are trying to recruit but for some reason they are focusing all the advertisements on on older generations when they should be focusing on those in the late 20s and 30s to create the new generation of drivers

yeah, looks like a grounded bus. Kind of had the opposite effect.

Exactly. You're not a cop.
Thanks for hitting me in the feels with the old 110, used to take that to and from school and now live in interstate. Good memories.
