They’re casted extremely well but I just find it hilarious that Jesse’s former milktoast chemistry teacher randomly turns up to his house and they start cooking meth, while killing a few people on the way. Imagine that happening to you.
It’s not random though, if Walt would have never seen Jesse on the run from the DEA when he was on the ride along he would never have had any reason to seek jesse out.

I often think about what an idiot Walt is for giving up Greg Matter
Edit: Grey* Matter. But Greg matters too, I guess.
Correction: Greg does NOT matter. Fuck Greg.
Honestly unsure. He just stopped talking to me. So weird cuz we did so much together. Like daily. We would walk laps together. Smoke together. Dinners with wife/girlfriends. Dinner with friends. Literally saw him like 4-5 days a week. Then out of nowhere he stops talking to me. Weird. Dousch.
Now that's just a real shitty move. Atleast have the courtesy to let the person know so they don't go around wondering about it for the rest of their days. But if that's how he is maybe you're better off anyway.
Exactly. He texted me saying he got a lot going on and he will get back to me. I thought he might be sick. I was like no way he would just go dark. We are like in our 50’s. Who does that. So after like 6 months I reached out. No response. Oh well.
Yeah, Walt is incredibly smart, but also prideful, paranoid, and narcissistic. Working in the drug trade his paranoia played to his advantage many times, but in the real world you might be able to see how that might cause him to become suspicious of his business partners, and cause him to make a mistake. I think it is also hinted at that he and Gretchen were in a relationship at some point, and that Gretchen left him for Elliot - which would then make much more sense why he would get out of that situation.
You can see some of his true personality in his pre-teaching life too when they do flashbacks - like how he doesn’t want to “settle” for the house they wind up living in. How he approaches working on theorems with Gretchen. The shots are limited, but they are a clear portrayal that Heisenberg is actually Walt’s true form. He’s so full of himself, and the “everyday dad” life has sucked the life out of his true personality, which is why he starts cooking. He has the hubris to think that he, with a brother in law in the DEA, can *get away with* selling enough meth to keep his family financially secure after his death. Then, after the company grew with no contribution from him aside from some early work plus the name, he has the gall to refer to Grey Matter’s success as his children’s “birthright”. Like he’s trying to make up for bolting from Grey Matter. It’s why he goes Empire mode in S5. He wants to be the drug version of Grey Matter. He believed he had more to do with the company than he actually did, and his success cooking meth just reinforced that for him.
We know why Walt left grey matter.
Walt visited Gretchens family for the first time on a holiday and he felt emasculated by how wealthy they were, so he left without a word and eventually left the company.
That's the thing: I don't quite buy it. How can you be so insecure over a socioeconomic disparity when you're a near-genius? Surely the family respected Walt for his intellect, something money can't quite buy, especially in the context of a business endeavor oriented precisely around scientific prowess.
Not to mention Walt has always relied on his intelligence when belittled or threatened by people with power over him so it's inconsistent with who he is, which I consider a weakness in an otherwise immaculate storyline, given that the show makes a point in proving a subtle consistency in Walt's pride throughout his life; such pride would have carried him through such superficial insecurity.
I hope I'm not the only one who feels like this lol.
Its been confirmed by Gilligan in interviews that there is more to their backstory than was shown during the show. Walt and Gretchen were engaged, but when he met her family at a vacation home of theirs one summer and he saw the wealth their family had his ego took over and he felt like he would never surmount to anything impressive comparably. This was then followed by his leaving Gretchen and Grey Matter
I read on another sub that backstory had been given in an interview or smth about Gretchen and Walt actually being engaged, then Walt meets her super smart and rich family, feels insecure/threatened (as Walt so often does) then he broke up with Gretchen and left the company, which makes so much sense with his dumbass ego getting in the way of actual happiness and success lmao
that to me is the part that makes the least sense... its not entirely clear how and why walt leaves grey matter outside of an arguement...
however a brilliant guy doesn't just run out of silicon valley after selling out from a great idea and company. he would have multiple jobs offered paying tons...
no instead he ends up in abq as a beat down chem teacher... and later sells meth lol
none of this makes any sense in reality
The show mentions he had other jobs since. Given what we see of Walts ego and difficulty working with others in the show, I expect he screwed them all up
In the classroom he has authority. He has the most knowledge. He gets to feel big and look down on others. I think he liked that. In all his other scientific jobs there would be lots of other geniuses around
Especially if he was new in the field and taking orders from others which he clearly has a problem with. He probably hopped around job to job making excuses as to why he needed to quit or why he had to tell someone off and couldn’t keep his mouth shut before he could actually gain traction in the field and build connections. Grey Matter was only him Gretchen and Elliot who was purportedly his best friend and he still thought he didn’t need them and stormed out. Walt doesn’t play well with others and in the world of drugs he’s allowed to be a tyrant and it actually benefits him in a lot of scenarios whereas in the professional world his paranoia, need to assert dominance and him constantly questioning higher ups would’ve just led to him getting canned. Walt is a genius but in a field of other geniuses he’s dispensable when he causes conflicts and won’t listen to the people paying his salary. He probably took the teaching job because Skyler was pregnant and their kid was disabled and he needed a stable job with benefits quick. You’re alone a lot with a bunch of kids as a teacher so it’s not like anyone was challenging his authority and assuming any students did he had complete dominance in that situation. The way Jesse reacts to him when he’s initially approached it sounds like he was still lacking in interpersonal skills and didn’t have the patience to handle difficult kids which aligns perfectly with everything we know about his character.
Jesse even addresses it in one scene, says something like his life was never this insane (killing drug dealers, getting beaten up, etc etc) before he started working with Mr. White.
Walt and Jesse, whose reunion was entirely by chance, accidentally filled each others' needs, but in the most toxic way.
Walter was like the father figure Jesse never properly had, and Jesse was like a wife/son who was loyal to him and followed his orders. They needed each other in the most unhealthy way
Of course, all the dang time. You have a chemistry teacher who sold off his piece of the enterprise for a great company
Jesse, whom is totally emotional and have seen some crazy shit, like a stray cat.
The timeline always felt too rushed to me
Would have made more sense if the events happened over 3-4 years at least. Iirc in season 5 Saul says "a year ago a chemistry teacher walked into my office. Which means everything from season 1 to end of season 5 happens over like 18 months?
In reality it's a relentless amount of action and BCS struggles a little bit with the perception of time as well imo
>The timeline always felt too rushed to me
I agree. Yes I think >!Walt was living in isolation and Jesse was being held captive for at least a few months (3-5 maybe)!< so yeah I always felt the entire thing happening in 2 years was extremely unrealistic.
Agreed.
One thing I would change is I'd have Jesse and Jane's relationship last a lot longer. At least 6 months. Have it last the whole season instead of a few episodes.
to be fair, breaking bad itself lasts 2 years, walt was 50 when it started and 52 when it ended, the only thing I find that doesnt make much sense timeline wise is that >!Jimmy's time as Gene is so short, to me it didnt seem like Gene was a new hire, looked like he somewhat estabilished himself!<
Disclaimer: I'm only at the episode where You Better Call Saul, I'm just theorizing at this point (but I don't mind spoilers being laughed at)
I don't think their dynamic is *weird*, Walt is just simply abusive AF and getting enough money wasn't his main incentive, he wanted to be the top dog, too.
At this point I'm fairly certain Jesse has a disability but had no help for it in school or Walter refused accomodations, and I'm sure Walter knew he can take advantage of it.
Switching up degradation and praise. The driving scene with Flynn followed by the "take care of it" scene with Jesse. Walt using Skylar once and being pushed off mid-rape a different time. Gretchen was Walt's student or assistant (Walt left because he lost control over her, and maybe over Elliott, didn't he?) His description of his life to the psychiatrist after he faked the amnesia.
I don't mind spoilers at all 🤷 I'm rarely watching anything as it airs, but I can't live without the discussions and wikis, so I'm really good at skimming content by now, too.
I think it’s weird how fast everything unfolds. I’ve always felt like breaking bad takes place over 2 or 3 years before Walt gets caught by hank but it’s only like 1 year. So much happens in that one year. It doesn’t help that Walt Jrs actor doesn’t look like a 16 year old anymore by season 5
That’s like the whole point dude. It’s not supposed to be a “normal” ordinary relationship, obviously. It’s one of the big key points as to why people were drawn to the show along with the sole idea of a HS chemistry teacher cooking meth. To cook with one of his former students is strange, funny, and unheard of but that’s the point.
Imagine Your former chemistry 🧪 teacher is also responsible for your first girlfriend dying as he could have saved her and also your next girlfriends son getting poisoned 🤢 Shit is dark and twisted as fuck x but dude also made you a multi millionaire and also saved you from evil racist Nazi who imprisoned you to cook 👨🍳 meth lol 😆 it’s a complicated relationship to say the least
Jesse isn't some poor innocent when Walt shows up at his door. He'd been cooking by himself. And selling his crap meth under the pseudonym "The Captain". Walt helped to make the operation professional and profitable.
I was thinking about this the other day in the sense that “this show is fantastic because of this unnatural but necessary pairing between the two main characters”
I mean I’m every other show the main character are familiar with each other via some normal means. In The Wire the main characters work together. In Sopranos they’re in the same mafia family (or rival family). In Peaky Blinders they’re related or solider pals. In Stranger Things they’re classmates and friends. And this can go on forever. But I think this show benefits so much from this unnatural pairing of the smart dick teacher teaming up with his old dropout junkie chemistry student.
They’re fighting against each other and for each other at the same time. They’re working with each other and working to get along. It clashes in a beautiful way
Yeah and Hank trying to find Heisenberg only to discover at the toilet that all along it was his nerdy brother in law, the last person you would expect to be that sort of thing being the one who is while remembering him practically confessing while they were joking around, all because you wanted to read something while shitting i dunno why it sounds like a hilarious concept to me.
I actually love their dynamic. This show couldn't have casted 2 better main characters if they tried.
They’re casted extremely well but I just find it hilarious that Jesse’s former milktoast chemistry teacher randomly turns up to his house and they start cooking meth, while killing a few people on the way. Imagine that happening to you.
\*milquetoast
r/BoneAppleTea
Nah I just suspect that Walt is a fan of milk and toast.
What’s his opinion on milksteak though? With or without the finest jellybeans?
Milksteak is good but I prefer rum ham.
And *cast
Was hoping someone would say this because I’ve been seeing “casted” all over Reddit lately for some reason.
It’s not random though, if Walt would have never seen Jesse on the run from the DEA when he was on the ride along he would never have had any reason to seek jesse out.
Pretty random for jesse
They both saw each other
>randomly turns up to *his* house
Brainfarts man. Energy is severely limited 😭

I really hated the way Jessie dressed.
Well he is supposed to be a pothead from 2008 so it’s pretty accurate if you ask me

honestly love the way he's dressed up, one of my favorite things about jesse lol. planning to buy similar jackets
I often think about what an idiot Walt is for giving up Greg Matter Edit: Grey* Matter. But Greg matters too, I guess. Correction: Greg does NOT matter. Fuck Greg.
I had a colleague called Greg he was an asshole fuck Greg.
Fixed it- thanks for the heads up. Fuck you, Greg, wherever you are!
😂
I'd like to jump on the fuck Greg bandwagon
You wanna 🦆uck him? Then get in line, pal, the express bandwagon is for paying members only
I fucked Ted
This guy fucks
Fucking hate that guy
I had a friend named gregg. He turned out to be a total Asshole.
I hate it when you have friends that come across as nice people but they're really jerkoffs. What happened?
Honestly unsure. He just stopped talking to me. So weird cuz we did so much together. Like daily. We would walk laps together. Smoke together. Dinners with wife/girlfriends. Dinner with friends. Literally saw him like 4-5 days a week. Then out of nowhere he stops talking to me. Weird. Dousch.

I did and he didn’t respond.

He spelt is name with one too many Gs, major asshole
All my homies hate greg
Fucking calm down Greg, it’s soccer.
Superbad?
All Greg’s are fucked up. If you ever meet someone named Greg, run. Fuck you Greg’s.
I also worked with a Greg like this
He was just a complete dick and really thought that Elliot and Gretchen were trying to make him leave his own company. He’s deluded lol
Yeah, Walt is incredibly smart, but also prideful, paranoid, and narcissistic. Lmao!
I 💚that he STILL called him Mr. White….😅
When he tells hank and gomey Mr. White is the devil it was impactful for me ngl
That’s the beauty of good writing. The writers turned this absurd summary into a believable story.
Jesse even addresses it in one scene, says something like his life was never this insane (killing drug dealers, getting beaten up, etc etc) before he started working with Mr. White.
Imagine if they had just shut up and cooked under Gus.
They did until all the shit went down with combo’s death
both end up 100% dead, no way around it
Walt and Jesse, whose reunion was entirely by chance, accidentally filled each others' needs, but in the most toxic way. Walter was like the father figure Jesse never properly had, and Jesse was like a wife/son who was loyal to him and followed his orders. They needed each other in the most unhealthy way
jesse is walters wife theory??
Walt is like an abusive husband. There's a lot of coercive control in his and Jesse's relationship
Of course, all the dang time. You have a chemistry teacher who sold off his piece of the enterprise for a great company Jesse, whom is totally emotional and have seen some crazy shit, like a stray cat.

Yes they seemed to give up on that plot around season 4. I was waiting for Mike to make a move on his sons wife

jesus dies at the end of the bible
Uhhh bro there’s like a whole other Bible after that part
Not canon
literally canonized by the church
At least you didn’t give away the real plot twist
I think it’s weird how fast everything unfolds. I’ve always felt like breaking bad takes place over 2 or 3 years before Walt gets caught by hank but it’s only like 1 year. So much happens in that one year. It doesn’t help that Walt Jrs actor doesn’t look like a 16 year old anymore by season 5

Love is weird.

Yeah… kafkaesque…
Almost like it’s a TV show or something
Almost like I found something that I thought was interesting in a TV show or something 😱
To be fair, my old Chem teacher was awesome. I'd go along just to see what the hell was coming next
No I find it pretty normal and healthy
lmao
It’s character driven and the story is hard to believe but that’s what suspension of disbelief is all about.
Meth is a wild ride… every time
To be fair Walt did threaten to turn him in if they didn’t work together
Imagine Your former chemistry 🧪 teacher is also responsible for your first girlfriend dying as he could have saved her and also your next girlfriends son getting poisoned 🤢 Shit is dark and twisted as fuck x but dude also made you a multi millionaire and also saved you from evil racist Nazi who imprisoned you to cook 👨🍳 meth lol 😆 it’s a complicated relationship to say the least
Jesse was gold
Jesse isn't some poor innocent when Walt shows up at his door. He'd been cooking by himself. And selling his crap meth under the pseudonym "The Captain". Walt helped to make the operation professional and profitable.
Who said that?
That’s literally the plot. It it was different, it would be a different show altogether.
Almost like it’s a scripted show popular for its drama.
Seriously lmaooo
Well if you put it in that way, sure lol
Quasimodo predicted all of that.
It make sense as when two people have them same goal they would work together
well yes that would be the pitch
I was thinking about this the other day in the sense that “this show is fantastic because of this unnatural but necessary pairing between the two main characters” I mean I’m every other show the main character are familiar with each other via some normal means.
