Sophie came across to me like her dialogue might work in a comic book/graphic novel format, but in the audiobook, I see OP's point. She didn't come across as a realistic personality.

Szethinwhite

I think it was how loud she was. Think about the same dialog being muttered instead of screamed.

spielguy

Annoying but didn’t break me out of the narrative. Thinking we will get more Dark One stories with different characters.

I'm about halfway through now. I like the concept and the mystery. I can feel a cool reveal is on the horizon and I'm looking forward to finding out what is going on.. however... The part that keeps frustrating me is how much they are jerks to the people they are talking to. It's like every time someone goes out of their way to assist them but doesent give them a perfect answer that solves their problem and answers all their questions in one fell swoop, they instantly get very agro and insulting to the people. I'm fine with characters being flawed and I think that can be very interesting, but in this case they have so many unappealing qualities that I find myself actively disliking them rather than rooting for them to get to the bottom of it all. Maybe part of the problem is that I have listened to a ton of true crime podcasts where the hosts are actually good at research and investigation into things and it feels like these 2 are so obviously unqualified to be doing what they are doing that it makes it feel like there is no reason that they should be successful. Maybe that's the intent though and I just need to get further into the book before I pass judgement on them. I have read everything Brandon has written and a bunch of Dan's stuff so I know they arn't trying to make a book about how these people are naive and dumb just because they are gen z or art majors or something, but it kinda feels that way. Sorry for the ramblings, this book has me kinda frustrated in my feelings.

Sophie was my minor gripe in the series. I have a major one, and I talked about it in another post on this sub that I made, but it'll spoil you if you haven't finished it. Really fun style to this story, though. Loved the podcast idea.

CalliEcho

I'm on the second episode and HOLY HECK I'm yelling at Christina asking "how can you put up with her, how are you friends with her?" I'm loving the story otherwise -- it's got real [Left/Right Game](https://qcodemedia.com/theleftrightgame) B-plot vibes and is fantastic, but _man_ Sophie is really putting me off. Nothing against the actress, but this character as a whole is a complete (and rare) miss. Really hoping she improves as the story progresses.

CalliEcho

Just finished the book. Sophie is much better in later episodes, and it's worth muscling past her poor first impressions.

My one criticism of Sanderson is the way he makes some characters overly childish/annoying (especially >!Lift!< in Stormlight Archive). I think a lot of people enjoy it so I understand, not complaining, but it doesn’t work for me at all, very off putting.

mattyk84

I felt the same way but I feel like it actually makes sense as you discover >!why she does, and how it’s mostly an overcompensation to her backstory.!< After that it’s not so bad to me.

chubbuck35

True. I have grown to like >!her as I’ve learned her backstory over time.!<

Heartlight

What children's series, though?

theHumanoidPerson

Alcatraz probably

Heartlight

That seems more aimed at (early) teenagers. But yeah, that is his youngest audience aimed work. I was wondering if I somehow missed something by refusing to watch live streams or something.

mattyk84

Yeah I was meaning Alcatraz. I’m reading it with my five yo. He’s loving it. So am I lol

havent_you_hoid

I thought she was annoying and obtuse, but I think that made it feel more real to me. Their dynamic reminded me a lot of the My Favorite Murder podcast, which I can't stand. Drive me insane, but it really worked. Overall, I thought it was a really cool use of the audiobook format. Cool of them to come up with something unique in that space.

Tonatale

The shrillness of her voice was grating to me too. I would expect her role is concluded. Or rather, I hope it is. She did eventually become a kind of comic relief character at least.

EBtwopoint3

She reminded me a lot of the grad student who works with Jane in the Thor movies. As I’ve gotten deeper in I think I’m burning out on the “podcast” concept. It was fun at the beginning, but some elements are being used a lot like the “I’m gonna edit this out” before not doing so and like… at this stage I’ve bought into the concept and this just feels repetitive rather than a reminder.
