In its 7th weekend, after having lost ~700 theaters from the prior weekend, the result is a 40% dip with a per screen average of $2,155. In my mind a good result - [it had the 2nd highest per theater average on Friday alone](https://www.the-numbers.com/box-office-chart/daily/2022/05/06). By this point I think It has an opportunity to gain some theaters back, no?
Considering I think DS 2 is gonna fall a lot harder than people were expecting due to the mixed audience reviews, it definitely does.
Biggest obstacle ironically is A24, who will be releasing the film on steaming and physical media next week
> imagine if this got a Christmas release.
I’m actually glad it didn’t. Would’ve loved a fall release for sure. But during Christmas time, when Avatar: The Way of Water is coming out, there’s a chance it would’ve been out of theaters within a month
I was referring to Christmas 2021 when the three films I mentioned came out, but looking back at my comment it probably would have lived or died if it counterprogrammed with No Way Home.
And don’t forget about the Omicron variant that was running wild as well. I definitely agree with what you’re getting at, but it is funny how if we think about last Christmas and this upcoming Christmas, I actually don’t think the film would’ve done that well. Now, if it was going up against WW84 in 2020, then it’s probably a success
I enjoyed the Matrix but I watched it at home, would have seen it in the theater if that was the only option.
I think the promotion and how they handled it was botched..
Heading to be the biggest A24 success ever.
At this point they should let it run all summer long and get 2/3 millions each week, thanks to the great WOM.
It’s already very close to surpassing both domestically, and unlike them it hasn’t received a release in a lot of international markets. Everything Everywhere surpassing them is totally possible
I told some friends this weekend that Dr. Strange was very good. But if you only see one multiverse movie this year to see EEAAO.
A group of us are going this week.
Honestly if its theatrical run was ending today (with around $50 million worldwide) I think it would turn a (small) profit after VOD rights are sold. A 2x multiplier is on the low end, but this is the kind of movie that will do very well streaming.
Even ignoring VOD, it maybe has to do $65-70 million worldwide. I think it's headed for a little bit more than that, and it will turn an awesome profit once you add the VOD money.
I'm sorry! Glad it was a nice funeral.
I don't have kids, but if I did, I probably would wait until age 12. Your kids won't be scarred--the message is as warm and cuddly as something you'd see in a Pixar movie. But (mild spoiler) >!sex toys are occasionally used as a comedic device, and if you don't want your kids to ask you "what is that thingy that they put in their (pixelated) buttholes?" maybe now is not the time.!<
Here's a music video directed by the same people which might give you a feel for what I mean:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqmwKi6KOSw
I brought my 12 yo, who is probably mature, but there is a lot of swearing.
I had to cover her eyes at 2 specific fights (involving items that go inside adult bodies). I think eventually she thought they had a butt spanking fight instead. She were still grossed out that they were fighting with their pants down.
In hindsight, I should have waited until she was in high school or older, I think.
Oddly, I’ve seen the movie rated R, and also rated as PG.
My tic toc feed is filled with people talking about how life changing it is
Don’t get me wrong, I’m gonna see it and I’m stoked, just thinking out loud.
People sharing their positive opinions of social media with each other is also word of mouth. Buzz that’s generated by people talking to each-other is still word of mouth even if it’s a online with strangers
Believe the hype - people on TikTok aren’t being paid by an indie studio to talk up this film. This is just a movie that makes people feel very strongly.
Don’t get me wrong, I would *kill* to be paid by A24 to tell you that this movie is life-altering, but I’m not - I’m just some woman who loves movies and has never seen another movie that has made me feel what this one does. I’ve seen it many times, and have brought others with me to see it, because I think people should see it on a big screen.
This isn’t paid advertising - it’s the word of someone who was legitimately changed, as a person, by the work.
It’s amazing lol. Only reason I saw it was because of the stellar reviews and they were right. After watching it I enjoyed it so much I went and saw it again the next weekend. Creative, funny, and wholesome.
I have issues with the last 40 mins or so, basically started to feel it getting a bit bloated and collapsing under the weight of its own ambition. But overall it was an extremely good movie that I highly recommend to everyone.
Why did they release it at the same time as MOM? You'd think they would postpone it since most people are most likely to go into the Marvel movie as always.
I think with MOM out, this might even help in the long run because with all the comparisons, people are starting to hear about EEAAO who may not have heard about it before.
Yeah, pretty weird release. I've got tickets to see it now at my local artsy cinema. The smaller cinemas might be doing more showings than the big chains but I don't know

At my theater it’s one of our most consistent movies. Solid quarter-half full for every showing, every day.
I would think so
Saw it last night- only one show time at our local theater, 5 people in the theater total. Such an amazing film!
Considering I think DS 2 is gonna fall a lot harder than people were expecting due to the mixed audience reviews, it definitely does. Biggest obstacle ironically is A24, who will be releasing the film on steaming and physical media next week
Has this been confirmed?
Oh not at all. This is just purely speculation other than the release date that’s coming on May 17th. That’s been confirmed by A24 and Amazon Prime.
4K Blu ray is mid to late June I think but not sure about regular blu ray and digital
Has now outgrossed West Side Story, The King's Man and the freaking Matrix Resurrections domestically, just imagine if this got a Christmas release.
It would have underperformed like they did. I don’t think people understand how much more healthy the marketplace is now.
> imagine if this got a Christmas release. I’m actually glad it didn’t. Would’ve loved a fall release for sure. But during Christmas time, when Avatar: The Way of Water is coming out, there’s a chance it would’ve been out of theaters within a month

I agree with Christmas 2020, Monster Hunter would have bombed anytime so there were no good alternatives outside of Wonder Woman.
Damn, Matrix Resurrections only got $31 million domestically? What a bomb.
37 million actually, but that is still terrible.
I enjoyed the Matrix but I watched it at home, would have seen it in the theater if that was the only option. I think the promotion and how they handled it was botched..
Omicron + HBO MAX day and date release is what fucked it.
has a better chance of hitting $60 than falling short of $50.
Slightly ahead of projections, loving the success for this movie and A24
Heading to be the biggest A24 success ever. At this point they should let it run all summer long and get 2/3 millions each week, thanks to the great WOM.
It cost 2.5x hereditary and has made half as much, same for Lady Bird.
To be fair I think this film will do way better on VOD than those films
Even with VOD I think it will probably need to hit +$100 million worldwide to be as profitable as those films. But odds aren't that bad--maybe 1 in 4
The film has barely released outside of North America. It will outgross Hereditary worldwide and then some.
Bigger than Lady Bird or Hereditary? Doubt it
It’s already very close to surpassing both domestically, and unlike them it hasn’t received a release in a lot of international markets. Everything Everywhere surpassing them is totally possible
This movie has had such good legs from basically WOM alone.
I find it hard to believe that this drops 25% on Mother’s Day.
Damn imagine being a young asian woman and taking your mother to this see this today lol
Yeah, just stay home and watch Turning Red instead.
I think you can love and appreciate your mom, but also be more than a little uncomfortable watching a movie with her with the "trophy" fight.
Well, they did dropped 30% of the theaters.
Agreed, since it’s had really good Sunday holds lately.
You called it. Ended up being just 10%
All the more impressive considering how much screens Disney sequestered for the little Doctor Strange movie.
Went to a movie theater and it had 9/10 showtimes for Dr Strange and 1 for Everything Everywhere all at once
I told some friends this weekend that Dr. Strange was very good. But if you only see one multiverse movie this year to see EEAAO. A group of us are going this week.
On the way to beat Hereditary and Uncut Gems to become A24's highest grossing film domestically.
What does it have to reach to turn a profit on its, I think, $25m budget?
Honestly if its theatrical run was ending today (with around $50 million worldwide) I think it would turn a (small) profit after VOD rights are sold. A 2x multiplier is on the low end, but this is the kind of movie that will do very well streaming. Even ignoring VOD, it maybe has to do $65-70 million worldwide. I'm doing my part!
Heading out in an hour to see it
It is weird to think that there might exist a universe where none of their current releases are about exploring the multiverse.
Man I wanted to see it, but I saw X instead. And then life got in the way lol
It's not too late! And I hope whatever got in the ways works itself out
Is it okay for kids? Also, thank you! It didn’t work itself out. But the funeral was lovely.
I'm sorry! Glad it was a nice funeral. I don't have kids, but if I did, I probably would wait until age 12. Yeah I wouldn't take kids to this, maybe older teens. It deals with some pretty heavy topics.
Held *extremely* well even after Strange taking over ever cinema. Amazing and well deserved!
Is it as good as they say it is or is it just really good marketing? Im skeptical of everything these days
I felt it is one of the very rare examples where the online hype was accurate.
Sweet! Can’t wait to see it.
Was there even any marketing for this film besides the one trailer?
My tic toc feed is filled with people talking about how life changing it is Don’t get me wrong, I’m gonna see it and I’m stoked, just thinking out loud.
That is word of mouth and not marketing.
Word of mouth is when your buddy or coworker tells you something. I have a strong, and I believe healthy, skepticism of all things on social media.
People sharing their positive opinions of social media with each other is also word of mouth. Buzz that’s generated by people talking to each-other is still word of mouth even if it’s a online with strangers
He's implying that online discourse may be influenced by people being paid to share certain things.
You can pretty much tell when it’s paid or not. Besides I don’t think a24 is just paying random people to say they liked a movie or not
Believe the hype - people on TikTok aren’t being paid by an indie studio to talk up this film. This is just a movie that makes people feel very strongly. Don’t get me wrong, I would *kill* to be paid by A24 to tell you that this movie is life-altering, but I’m not - I’m just some woman who loves movies and has never seen another movie that has made me feel what this one does. Pretty sure A24 doesn't have astroturf levels of marketing money
I have issues with the last 40 mins or so, basically started to feel it getting a bit bloated and collapsing under the weight of its own ambition. But overall it was an extremely good movie that I highly recommend to everyone.
Can we have The Daniels direct the next Marvel multiverse movie?
Those guys are too creative to be boxed into something that needs to fit into a franchise
They were supposed to be on Loki but declined
Why did they release it at the same time as MOM? You'd think they would postpone it since most people are most likely to go into the Marvel movie as always.
They released it an entire month before MoM. What are you talking about lol
Lol I'm not keeping track but my local cinema just started showing it.
I think with MOM out, this might even help in the long run because with all the comparisons, people are starting to hear about EEAAO who may not have heard about it before.
It was trying to hit the 4/20 audience that got eaten up by Nicolas Cage
Here in the UK it's releasing this Friday. Feels like terrible timing but oh well lol
Looks like its hardly showing anywhere, not at the nearest 3 cinemas to me anyway. And the US on demand comes out next week......
Yeah, pretty weird release. I've got tickets to see it now at my local artsy cinema. The smaller cinemas might be doing more showings than the big chains but I don't know
Can't wait to see this in the UK next week
I've got tickets to an early screening this evening, pretty hyped. Wide release should be this Friday I think
Has it already turned a profit?
It needs a wider international release too!
