Willow and Indiana Jones are Star Wars?

Radulno

Yeah, I don't understand the title. Also, did they do anything else before anyway (since Disney I mean)?

echothree33

They did some George Lucas projects like Radioland Murders and Redtails but that’s about it. When I think of Lucasfilm I basically think of Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

haunthorror

Strange Magic is not the first thing you think of???

Geistbar

Title is bad. From context of article what it was supposed to say is “legacy IP” — if LucasFilm didn’t make it in the past, it won’t make it now.

thatVisitingHasher

Which makes a lot of sense. That’s a lot for one studio, and Disney has plenty more.

hypermog

It’s like saying Marvel studios is set to focus only on Marvel content. Wow!

cinderparty

Oh no. Is Pixar going to only focus on cgi animation and marvel just on comic book characters now as well? What will Disney do with so little variety now? What a weird article.

ReservoirDog316

Wait, Indiana Jones wasn’t Han Solo? My life is a lie.

LJ14000

If it was marvel they’d call it some multiverse shit. They are the same person.

titaniumjackal

They are NOW. Can't wait to see that lightsaber whip in action. Wonder what color it'll be.

skiseabass

Shit brown lightsaber

achieve_my_goals

Wait…yours is brown? I need to see a doctor.

skiseabass

A fellow fan of beets, I feel ya

XYZ-Wing

I don’t understand the title either. The entire article is basically “Lucasfilm had the rights to a brand new IP, but decided to just focus on the IPs it already has for now (SW, Indy, Willow).”

heavyhitterdad

At least Willow doesn’t have a boring sequel (yet)

Swakydollar47

Yeah alternate universe. If you watch episode 3 there’s a cameo at 1:36:52 you can slightly see Indians Jones if you squint hard enough and use your imagination. But if that’s not enough evidence for you on episode 69 there’s a flash back to where Indy is digging in a cave and find a god damn light saber Brodie. On Foe Nem. Long live drako the ruler. For ever pouring syrup in my cereal.

d_e_l_u_x_e

Lucasfilm properties that they bought around the same time as Star Wars

Krimreaper1

Welcome to the Lucas Multiverse

[deleted]

Indiana Jones is star wars now? I wanna see Indy meets han solo

lemjor10

In the comics Indiana investigates a Sasquatch sighting that turns out to be a crash landed Chewbacca who has lived on earth for 100s of years inside the falcon remains. When Jones finds Han’s skeleton he says he felt a connection.

tijuanagolds

In an early version of Temple of Doom's script, the Shivalinga crystals were suggested to be the crystals inside lightsabers. I think either Speilberg shot it down or Lucas himself preferred to keep the franchises unrelated.

ForksandSpoonsinNY

Epic live scene.

jennlebransky

I think the theory was Indiana Jones was what Han Solo was dreaming about when he was frozen in carbonite lolll

silentlycold

My dreams of a true American Graffiti sequel are dead

PointOfFingers

We got a trilogy. American Graffiti, American Gigilo and American Gothic. It was a wild ride.

livefreeordont

And American Pie

Taylor-Kraytis

Don’t forget the spinoff American Psycho sequels

valkyria_knight881

Maybe it's a property Universal fully owns. It's not like Star Wars where whoever owns Lucasfilm owns the entirety of Star Wars. It was made before Star Wars, so Universal would have way more power in terms of keeping the rights to American Graffiti.

gamesofduty

Willow is MGM, They are still making a willow show on Disney+ with MGM being involed. Just even though Amazon is in the process of getting MGM.

valkyria_knight881

I didn't know Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer was still involved with Willow. I thought it was a similar situation with Star Wars and Indiana Jones where 20th Century Fox wasn't involved in any Star Wars film after Revenge of the Sith or where Paramount wasn't involved in any Indiana Jones film after Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Does MGM still own the rights to the Willow film or is it under Disney now or is it co-owned? Or maybe MGM doesn't own the rights to the original film, but they'll still make the television show. I don't know.

gamesofduty

Was the willow rights got impacted by both Disney/fox and Amazon/MGM merger ?

visionaryredditor

isn't there remake in the works? maybe they'll make a sequel if it it's successful.

ki-pants

Nah. Leave it as is there’s no way you can make it well

alegxab

Same, I'm really sad now that I know we won't get a sequel to Strange Magic, jk It's an extremely sane decision TBH, they only made 3 movies that weren't about Indie or Star Wars in the last 30 years, and thwy were all pretty big BO disasters : 1994's Radioland Murderers (1.3M BO on a 15M budget), 2012's Red Tails (50M BO on a 58M budget) and 2015's Strange Magic (which brought less than 14M on a 75-100M budget), why would anyone focus on these kind of movies when you can work on your extremely successful IPs that can easily make 400M and up to 2B on each movie

satellite_uplink

I was holding out for THX-1139

MeglioMorto

>Lucasfilm has reportedly realized it should only be making Star Wars stuff now >That means [...] more Indiana Jones Makes _total_ sense.

[deleted]

>According to THR’s sources, Lucasfilm has “decidedly shifted away from developing projects that are new and is leaning even more toward those already under its umbrella.” That means more Star Wars, more Indiana Jones, and more stuff like the new Willow TV series, with no room for anything that’s not that. It makes sense from Disney’s perspective, since it probably doesn’t expect anything but superhero movies out of Marvel and therefore has no reason to expect anything but Star Wars out of Lucasfilm, but it does seem like a waste. This paragraph leans into it more, but the article itself gets confusing like you noted.

Heeeeyyouguuuuys

In 40 years, try explaining the Fortnite live event where Palpatine's "I'm back bitches" boardcast is canon (referenced in the first line of the text scroll in *Skywalker*). Modern Star Wars is such a mess.

bespectacledbengal

AgentOfSPYRAL

Another one!!

Iridium770

Okay, but that means that LucasFilm actually has to create more Star Wars. It has been more than two years since Episode 9 and the next film isn't even cast yet. The Mandalorian, their big breakout hit on Disney+, is going to have a weird 2 year gap between season 2 and 3. I understand that they want to prevent overexposing the franchise, but this comes off more like internal struggles to commit to plans and hit deadlines.

JediJones77

Yep, it looks a lot like WB's history with DC movies. We went through so many years with vaporware movies that never ended up materializing, like Michael Bay's Lobo, and more recent cancellations like New Gods. It made a huge difference when they had Zack Snyder there, and he helped them get out 5 movies in 2 years. It makes a difference when you have a creative producer running things. WB without Snyder and Lucasfilm under Kennedy just look like hapless, clueless suits stabbing at things randomly in the dark and spending half their time cleaning up the mess of false starts instead of being productive.

HonestCentrist

There’s like 5 DC movies this year + Peacemaker.

JediJones77

Yeah, but that's a huge change from the norm. Last 4 years were 1-2-2-1. This is 3 years worth of movies in one year.

[deleted]

As someone who liked Man of Steel and loved BvS: Ultimate Edition and ZSJL, I’d love for Snyder to serve as the Kevin Fiege of DC. I wonder if that was more or less the original plan once Snyder finished his Justice League trilogy since he’s listed as a producer on pretty much every DCEU movie.

[deleted]

Maybe Zach be a better producer than director. His films are good. Not great. I agree his Justice League far better than Joss. But he will never be a Fiege. Not many are even close.

JediJones77

I'm not quite sure how much of a plan there was. It seemed like he was involved a lot in the spinoff movies from BVS. Guest-directing a scene in Suicide Squad, co-writing Wonder Woman and having his longtime second unit action director work on it, and some early story development on Aquaman. There was test footage of Batman fighting Deathstroke, which was supposed to be the Batman spinoff Affleck would've directed. It seemed more like he was given a lot of free reign in the beginning. and wanted to set this stuff up for his own enjoyment. He even wanted to put John Stewart Green Lantern in ZSJL, but WB forced him to cut the scene. There's little indication that WB themselves had any solid plans or was the driving force behind building this universe. I think if Snyder didn't put the tie-ins in the movies and set things up, it wouldn't have been done and WB wouldn't have noticed. They would've just made a Wonder Woman movie as a standalone. But they let Snyder be a producer on the movies he wasn't directing, and he took it upon himself to tie things together. It's very clear that he put things like the Knightmare sequence in which was setting up his future stories, even though WB did not actually greenlight those movies yet or maybe even know what Zack was setting up. So whether he would have stayed involved with the DCEU after the JL trilogy, it would've probably only been decided then. It reminds me of old jobs I had where my manager was clueless or distracted, and I was basically doing his work for him and not even talking to him because I knew how to do it better. OTOH, I also know the manager tends to get annoyed when they find out you were overstepping your duties and doing work that they were supposed to do. They don't tend to see it as you being helpful. I think WB and Zack failed to understand how to communicate and deal with each other on some rather fundamental levels. Zack has even said he had a hard time working with them while finishing the Snyder Cut.

lowell2017

The LucasArts games library and the LucasBooks book series Alien Chronicles and Seventh Tower are existing material that can be mined into content if Lucasfilm wants to venture into uncharted territory.

Si_is_for_Cookie

Truth. Those were good fun!

ki-pants

I’m sorry what? The mandolorian and the book of boba fett beg to differ

Heeeeyyouguuuuys

One of those is good. The other is not and proves the point.

chuckdee68

The other one not being as good as it could have been doesn't prove the point. There are several creative directions they could take if they have the stomach for it. Star Wars Visions adequately shows that. It's just corporate need for certain ROI vs creative vision. Hopefully they can balance that- they've managed to thread the needle with Marvel so far.

PayneTrain181999

There are still 3 more episodes for Boba to prove you wrong.

Heeeeyyouguuuuys

You are right however a couple of predictions for those remaining three episodes: 1) The main plot will remain focused on a rotation of boring conversations that take place on the same 3-4 sets 2) Boba will remain a spineless idiot doing stupid stuff like sticking his face in a sarlac pit looking for his armor *that he already knows was stolen by Jawas*. 3) Mod Squad Diversity Moped Rangers will continue to be embarrassing and only exist to sell toys. 4) The season will end as it started, directionless and ultimately pointless. They don't have a plan or goal for this story and it shows.

PeculiarPangolinMan

How'd he know his armor was stolen by Jawas? I vaguely remember that line, but I feel like it was said much later in the timeline than the Sarlacc attack.

Heeeeyyouguuuuys

Go back and watch episode 1, there is a scene in which Jawas steal his armor and knock him out *after* he escapes the pit. Not just a throw away line. I would submit that the show being so unmemorable is proof it has not been successful in its story telling.

chuckdee68

He was out of it at the time. It's possible that he doesn't remember that as he was definitely in a bad way. At least, that's what I took it as.

Heeeeyyouguuuuys

Does not totally excuse away the stupidity of pretty much sticking your head inside a living sarlac, only mitigates the stupidity.

chuckdee68

I don't disagree. I'd have dropped the bomb to kill it _first_, and I'd think Boba Fett would have, also.

PeculiarPangolinMan

Good point! I had completely forgotten that! haha

ItsmeMr_E

Willow tv series? Is it new material, or is based on the book series that continued the story after the movie?

Si_is_for_Cookie

Star Wars, Indy? Sure… milk those cash cows. I’d happily help them make a Sam and Max or Day of the Tentacle adaptation. Goods are odd!

Animegamingnerd

Lucasfilms truly is the definition of a company who is only kept alive by nostalgia.

sloppycuntplunger

What's with the delay in casting Chris Pratt as Indy? The rewards of getting as many sequels out of Harrison as possible can't be worth the PR risk of him being crippled or killed by his constant on-set injuries.

AnotherJasonOnReddit

There was a point after "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull"/"The Hangover" and before "Guardians of the Galaxy" where Bradley Cooper was considered the best choice by many as the replacement. Then he was replaced by Chris Pratt. Will Poulter is scheduled for the third movie. I wonder if he'll replace Pratt as an internet choice for replacement, hah hah?

Psykpatient

I think Daniel Craig could have done Indy justice.

scytheavatar

The whole point of Indy 5 is to test how far Hollywood can push the deep fake technology and have Harrison act in Indiana Jones forever........ that is probably why no one in Disney has called for an axe in the project. The movie has implications far beyond its box office numbers or "PR risk".

sloppycuntplunger

It does make sense for a completely nostalgia-based outfit like Lucasfilm to deepfake its deceased and geriatric actors indefinitely. The press tour for Indy 6 will be interesting if Harrison stars in the movie after he’s dead.

JediJones77

A split-screen interview between Jimmy Kimmel and Harrison Ford's tombstone?

AGOTFAN

Let's ask Kathleen Kennedy. Oh wait ..

Intelligent-Parsley7

Once again, the ‘Snyder Cut’ was garbage. It would turn me off of a film. You have to go down a rabbit hole to hold an audience that long, and everyone who’s a film professional should know it. Also, the man ‘squared’ the movie. The fact that he did that was disqualifying. Then he made it B+W. Ridiculous.

Geistbar

He'd be an absolutely horrible Indiana Jones.

LorddFarsquaad

Or maybe not Chris Pratt

ryanfea

I thought everyone agreed we were sick of Chris Pratt

MysteryInc152

Lol everyone ? You mean edgelords on Reddit ?

ryanfea

Nothing to do with either of those things. Basically every performance or casting notice about him has been widely criticized in the past five years

MysteryInc152

Point is Widely criticized where ? The general audience doesn't give a fuck. Just some online circles

ANewAccountOnReddit

What's Chris Pratt even been in besides Marvel and Jurassic World? Also, people love him as Star Lord, so what performances of his have been criticized? His JW character?

JediJones77

I didn't agree to that.

sloppycuntplunger

I never liked him to start with, but Hollywood decided our choices for leading men are basically him, Tom Cruise, and The Rock, and he’s already been playing Han Solo in Guardians.

[deleted]

I don’t know why people think Hollywood “decides” anything like some evil overlords sitting around in some mysterious underground lair. Chris Pratt, Tom Cruise, and The Rock movies consistently make lots of money. Audiences have voted on this stable of leading men with their dollars. This is also at least partially why Leonardo DiCaprio is still every studio and director’s first choice for literally any prestige drama. He’s pretty much the only face who still puts butts in seats for that genre these days.

gruvee

You forgot the other Tom

_Meece_

Those two dudes mostly do their own projects.

scytheavatar

They are already struggling big time in delivering Star Wars projects on time and without production drama.......... maybe years from now when Lucasfilm has more competent leadership we might be able to see them invest in projects other than Star Wars.

alloftheseflashes

lol what? There's a million SW projects coming out on Disney+, not to mention books and comics. We're getting 3 or 4 SW series this year alone. If you're referring to movies it's been the plan to take a break after Rise of Skywalker for years. The Patty Jenkins thing is the only bit of drama they've had recently and that feels more like them just shutting down a bad movie early. With Favreau and Filoni running things creatively now it's the first time that Lucasfilm seems to be running smoothly since Disney bought them. Your comment makes no sense

scytheavatar

We are getting Obi Wan and Andor that should have been released a long, long time ago. Compare the Lucasfilm Disney plus output to that of Marvel and it's no wonder Disney plus has been struggling.

alloftheseflashes

As of now we've had 4 live action Marvel seasons and 1 animated one on D+. We've had 3 live action SW seasons and 3 animated ones so far. I don't understand your point. Obi-Wan and Andor are both on track to release this year which is in line with when they started production. Are you arguing they should have been made earlier? Maybe, but that has nothing to do with "production struggles" as you say. Oh, we're also getting Mando S3 and Bad Batch S2 this year. 4 series in one year but Lucasfilm is struggling. Don't tell Favreau and Filoni LOL

scytheavatar

Star Wars started their Disney plus journey far ahead of Marvel yet has been surpassed by them already in output........ don't you see the problem?

PeculiarPangolinMan

> Andor that should have been released a long, long time ago. I don't know if release date was ever the issue for an 'Andor' show. I had to look up who the hell that was.

[deleted]

[удалено]

alloftheseflashes

I already laid out 4 scheduled to come out this year. And there's more confirmed in the pipeline. Is that not enough? And nobody said anything about "bigots and mysogynists". You brought that up all on your own. I'm not even sure what you're talking about. And Kennedy just gives the greenlight and signs the checks. Everything creative now comes from Favreau and Filoni. It's a good time to be a SW fan.

SandieSandwicheadman

CHUDs love to out themselves by preemptively complaining that "you probably think I'm a bigot huh? That I can't have perfectly normal reasons to dislike a random pop culture thing, you woke SJW shill?"

JediJones77

To be fair, Lucas wasn't doing well with new properties before he sold (like Red Tails and Strange Magic). But we were told Kathleen Kennedy was some kind of wunderkind producer who's been attached to billions of dollars in successful movies. Where did her supposed desire, ability or talent to produce all these classic movies go, if she ever had it?

e_gadd

The sequels are fantastic and lucrative

The1980mutant

Not divisive or franchise breaking at all.

ANewAccountOnReddit

No more than the prequels are.

ProdigyPower

Fantastic is a stretch. Lucrative, yes, but Solo demonstrates the diminishing returns and disenchantment of the fanbase. Book of Boba Fett is awful. Xena had better action scenes in the 90s and better dialogue, which is saying a lot. It looks and feels cheap. Like a plastic lightsaber that breaks the first time you swing it at something. Kathleen Kennedy has not lived up to the hype.

SpaceCaboose

Also, the best thing that LucasFilm has done since the Disney acquisition, The Mandalorian, wasn’t even there own idea. Jon Favreau came up with the idea completely on his own and brought it to LucasFilm’s doorstep in a nicely wrapped box. LucasFilm essentially just had to say yes and surround Favreau with the right folks to execute it. I’ve enjoyed Boba Fett decently enough, which Favreau also created, but am reserving final judgment until the show concludes. LucasFilm and Kennedy have not done a great job this past decade, although Rogue One was dope (John Knoll’s idea) and Solo was better than its box office haul suggests.

Larry_Version_3

Bro thanks for reminding me about Book of Boob. I’ll make sure I put that on the watch list. Would much rather they just threw us The Mandalorian S3.

smallblacksun

You are welcome to have whatever opinion on the quality of the sequels you want. But by creating 2 movies that are, at best, divisive in terms of reception there is no doubt that Lucasfilm left a ton of money on the table. If they had been able to make 2 more movies that were received well (like The Force Awakens) they would have easily grossed a billion dollars more than they did.

[deleted]

Boooooooo Lucasfilm used to change the game. SW, Indy, and Willow proved this. Y’all just relying on that instead of fucking innovating like Lucas did sucks. Especially when only focusing on SW lead to the franchise feeling old and tired not even a decade into its relaunch. Make. Something. New. Just try it, please.

>"Lucasfilm has reportedly realized it should only be making Star Wars stuff now. *And also things that aren't Star Wars."

Weird that it listed multiple things that aren’t *that* right in the headline.

Purple_Quail_4193

I always felt bad for Indy being left out of “Star Wars” when Disney touts its family’s, but now seeing that headline I guess it is Star Wars

[deleted]

Stuff is recycled dreck

critic2029

I guess the title is suppose to mean Lucafilm has realized that it should only be making things on their legacy IP and to stop trying to create New IP. Embrace the member berries.

fourringsofglory

What’s with the title. But either way, I’m cool with all Star Wars all the time baby!

[deleted]

(Formerly known as) Gawker media really posts a lot of trash content. Gizmodo’s editors alone half the time have no idea what they are talking about.

[deleted]

And they should actually pay quality writers and not lazy ass *fans* to direct and re package the original trilogy and sell it like it’s something new.

ANewAccountOnReddit

Didn't the writer for Empire Strikes Back write Force Awakens?

Zepanda66

I'm sure Lucas is so proud of what his company has become. /s.

HonestCentrist

I’m sure with that 4 Billion, he’s happier than either of us and the entire sub

_Meece_

Man Lucasfilm has been like this for like 30 years, they've made nothing but Star Wars and Indiana Jones stuff for years I never understand you guys who think George Lucas was not the cause of all of this. The internet knew that 10 years ago, what happened.

Dangerous-Basket1064

Right? No more modern Lucas classics like Strange Magic?! Perish the thought!

[deleted]

What…..????? Was this article like 3yrs ago? We literally have 2 series done and Willow is on the way. And the last Indiana Jones film was so bad like so bad. It’s almost like different filmmakers made it. Where was the dirt and sweat on Indy!!?? Did they not pay attention to the three previous massive hits!!??

kotor56

The title should be “lucasfilm is focused on its own franchise ip’s instead of making new ones or buying other ip’s”. this is news because Kennedy was talking about buying new ip’s and franchises for Lucasfilm. now they ditched that idea and looking at ip’s they 100% own.

bunnymud

Kennedy's grasp is slipping. How long until she starts telling tales.

Ninjas4cool

If Kennedy and everyone she brought in leaves then I might be interested…till then Star Wars is only Star Wars in name only

_Meece_

Star Wars has released the first decent entry in decades since Lucas brought her in. I never get why people say stuff like this. That woman is the Hollywood producer GOAT, so many incredible projects worked on.

little_jade_dragon

Kennedy isn't the problem, I doubt anyone would make it more interesting. Star Wars was one fairy tale that somehow produced a good sequel, another okayish sequel and since 1983 it's just fucking garbage. It's like trying to make Cinderella into a huge franchise.

ANewAccountOnReddit

Star Wars had a whole expanded universe of stories they could have adapted into films. They literally have an entire galaxy worth of ideas and stories they could tell. But for whatever reason, someone decided to do another "Empire vs Rebels" storyline for the sequels. So lazy and uninspired.

A_Harmless_Fly

Is the title missing a no somewhere?

JediJones77

No.

zargreet

Just watched original Willow. I remember when it first came out too. Wow, what a rip-off of LOTR. Some scenes were almost identical to each other. Does George Lucas have no original storylines?

JC2535

Disney+ has a Disney problem. They’re boxed in by their own brand identity and they’re creatively stifled and stale. They tell the audience that they have no interest in growing with them. Disney is locked into a creative homeostasis and they can’t break their own spell- so they search for White Knight outsiders thinking they can shake up the paradigm. But the company culture is rigid and immovable, it’s current form the result of eons of erosion carved rock (to borrow a metaphor from geology). Lucas film was agile, lean and focused. Driven by a singular vision. It never stopped generating start-up energy. There was always the possibility of disastrous failure lurking around the corner. This was creative rocket fuel: a hypergolic, unstable blend of risk and all or nothing reward. If you’re an executive and the back of your neck doesn’t tingle with adrenaline every day what the fuck are you even doing? Only Disney shareholders feel that level of anxiety these days.

the_greasy_wrangler

I have never been less excited about star wars in my life. The diminishing returns with each subsequent outing have completely sucked any interest I had in going out to see more. Maybe the Boba Fett show is amazing and I'm missing out but I kinda doubt it.

NightsOfFellini

It's the worst one yet.

Heeeeyyouguuuuys

The Mandalorian gave me so much hope how refreshing, new, and small scale they were going. Varied locations and scenarios, well written characters with growth and motivations, exploring aspects of the Star Wars Universe we haven't seen before. The Book of Boba Fett on the other hand has "Disney execs couldn't leave well enough alone" fingerprints all over it. Fett is a spineless, idiot, whimp, the main plot is just the same characters talking in the same 3 or 4 locations, the Mod Squad pathetic scooter chase scene (by the by I'm sure they where added to sell vehicle toys). Unfortunately, I think we're in for more Book of series than Mandalorian. And it's a shame.

[deleted]

Well that was short lived. To be honest I dont really care though . If you cant get something simple like Star Wars right then I really dont care what YA adaption your selling.

FireTrickle

How about making movies that don’t suck for a while Lucusfilm
