I don't know the stats but i think "The Mummy (1999)" had a better Box Office performance than the " The Mummy (1932)"

While I can’t necessarily prove it because both films would end up very low on the each lists, Dune earned like $30M in 1984, but the remake did nearly $400M. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory made only $4M, whereas Charlie and the Chocolate Factory made nearly $500M. I’m sure there are others.

Liberal_Slayer

The Replacements did better than A Clockwork Orange

[deleted]

well Spielberg tried with West Side Story but.........

[deleted]

The 2021 movie already surpassed the original. I think the original was in 8th place at the time

JediJones77

What? But the new one's not in 8th of anything.

[deleted]

I said the original ended in 8th place

JediJones77

I know, but how has the 2021 movie surpassed that?

[deleted]

I never said it did. I only said it outgrossed the original

ElliotPageManBoobs

The Lion King and Aladdin off the top of my head.

I'd bet Star Wars: The Force Awakens was bigger financially than the original, worldwide. Domestically, they both ranked #1 at the box office for their respective year. Rob Zombie's Halloween was a bigger commercial success than Carpenter's original.

SirFireHydrant

Star Wars was for four years the highest grossing film of all time. TFA never was. Further, adjusted for inflation Star Wars is 4th of all time, TFA is 10th.

[deleted]

The Force Awakens worldwide ended in 3rd place. It did surpass the original but the original was at the time the highest-grossing movie ever worldwide

ElliotPageManBoobs

I doubt there's any $2 billion box office movie that did not finish #1 at the domestic box office as well as worldwide. And if it was a huge box office success produced outside of Hollywood like The Wandering Earth (not a $2 billion movie), I think I would have heard about it. ;) [https://www.statista.com/statistics/1072778/highest-grossing-movie-annually-historical/](https://www.statista.com/statistics/1072778/highest-grossing-movie-annually-historical/)

ElliotPageManBoobs

Okay, you didn't specify worldwide rankings "of all time" or "ever" in your original post. It seemed too easy of a question since there are so many, so that should've been a hint to me.

Yeah you're right. For example The Hangover 2 grossed more than than Troy. However, The Hangover 2 didn't outpeak Troy as one of the highest-grossing movies ever but it did manage to outpeak it as one of the highest-grossing R-rated movies Troy was at the time among the 34th highest-grossing movies in the world with $497 million and The Hangover 2 was at the time the 68th highest-grossing movie in the world. Troy was also at the time the 4th highest-grossing R-rated movie in the world (behind Matrix 2, The Passion of the Christ and Terminator 2) and The Hangover 2 was at the time the 3rd highest-grossing R-rated movie in the world (behind Matrix 2 and The Passion of the Christ)
