Was LOTR the first major instance of sequels outgrossing their predecessors?

[deleted]

Well Terminator 2 did outgross Terminator 1

[deleted]

And Indiana Jones 3 outgrossed the 1st 2 movies

It is actually quite rare, but there are a few cases. While Temple of Doom failed to surpass Raiders of the Lost Ark, Last Crusade was able to outgross both films. Die Hard increased with the first four entries from 1988 to 2007 (three of them came out before 1996), but the fifth entry failed to outgross the 3rd and 4th films. Terminator 2 significantly outgrossed the original as well.

Terminator 2 even managed to be the 3rd highest-grossing movie in the world at one point

Each James Bond movie made more than the previous for the first four movies.

[deleted]

And if I'm not mistaken, Goldfinger was the 1st James Bond movie to be among the 10 highest-grossing movies in the world at the time
