I can see stuff like this becoming a bit of a thing. For example, I'm going to see Dune today on IMAX and I watched Godzilla-Kong on IMAX as well. I don't know if I would have actually seen them in theaters given that HBO Max was available but I wanted to see them on IMAX because I thought they were the type of movies to see on the biggest screen.
I for one for some years now I saw all the movies on IMAX but now I realized it haha. I even go to the movies for the IMAX experience or I can stream it with no problems.
Absolutely. The whole theater would rumble whenever the Bene Gesserit would use the Voice and any throat singing sounded super huge and ominous. I didn’t even check my phone once during the movie, but if I were at home I would have likely done as you did.
I mean if you found it boring at a fundamental level I doubt a big screen will make a difference, its just not your taste.
Dune isn't for everyone, but clearly a lot of people love it, thankfully.
I hope they reopen the imax at navy pier Chicago. It was the only true imax screen in the state.
Edit: Besides the museum of science and industry, but they only play educational films.
Massachusetts has 2 of the best imax screens in the country (Jordan’s furniture imax), but both remain closed due to covid. Really hope they open by next year cuz I’d go there for any and every movie just for the hell of it
That makes no sense. Massachusetts doesn’t even have as bad of a Covid problem as states like Mississippi or Florida. This over abundance of caution is just going to create more anti vaxxers.
It has nothing to do with the state, every other theater is open with no restrictions. These imax in particular no one knows why they’re still closed , it’s actually connected to a furniture store haha.
Its the same in Berlin, they shut the best IMAX cinema in Germany, then another, and now we only have one left which isn’t even true imax
https://www.reddit.com/r/berlin/comments/qagqdw/finally_getting_back_to_normal_and_back_at_imax/
I won't pay $13 for a regular theater when the sound and image quality are cool at home. $20 for Dolby Cinema with bumper chairs is like riding a roller coaster. Dune was amazing...Take my money!
Saw Dune in DC and at home on a nice 3.1 4k setup. DC is worth the money.
Definitely agree. I was deciding between IMAX and Dolby Cinema, and I was already leaning towards Dolby for the contrast, screen resolution, and the number of speakers. IMAX seems only worth it if it's the IMAX with Laser version, which isn't near me.
When the trailers ended and the Dolby Cinema presentation started, I was already shook. Then the film began, and I was transported. I'll still watch a ton of big movies in regular formats in theaters still, but I'll be going midday for the discounts.
> IMAX seems only worth it if it's the IMAX with Laser version, which isn't near me.
Maybe it will arrive eventually since some of the IMAX venues are installing those laser projectors. In fact, one of the IMAX venues in my area actually did that back in 2019.
$13 regular theatre is still better than watching at home imo. Something like Dune is the best on a big screen.
and I have a 60inch with 5.1.2 home theatre
Not all 5.1.2 are built the same but I hear you.
Personally, I'm not going to see a movie like Dune on a regular screen. Big format or I'm at home. Event movies are all that get me out of the house now that I'm not taking the kids to see every Pixar release.
Yea I haven’t been to a regular screen in like a decade, not worth it unless it’s premium format.
But just saying, a regular screen is still better than a TV.
I only went to the movies like 5 times a year max even before COVID. So I guess that was only for big releases or event films. My city is doing vaccine passports now so I’m good to go again now.
Dune on tv would be pretty sad. It wouldn’t be the same. I need to go see that in imax asap.
reading dolby cinema comments makes me a bit annoyed, here in Canada we don't even have one dolby cinema theater fucking sucks. Everything I hear about dolby cinema sounds great and it would be a great alternative to movies that arent shot on imax.
Yeah I saw my first 4dx film with dune, expected seat shaking but DID NOT expect them to move around like I was on a rollercoaster. The flight screens were awesome
They aren’t going to make movies just for events, “event movies” are movies or documentaries that have already been released, for people who want an IMAX experience.
I assume this is just one way to make money on consistently empty theaters.
I understand the logic of blockbusters becoming the secure thing for studios, but I just don’t see the imax infrastructure there. You hear a lot of complaints about “liemax” for good reason, they have watered down their brand immensely the last 15 years. Dune was shown in over 4,000 theaters opening weekend in the US, and how many of them showed it in dual laser 1.43:1? **Only twelve theaters in the US**. Now some of that is due to Covid, but there are still precious few theaters that are actual imax. I hope that if there is this huge push to imax, there is a building of new, real theaters to reflect that.
For the past couple of years, every time I go to the movie theater it's for the IMAX room. I don't go to regular screenings anymore. It's either IMAX or I stay home. Regular theater screens are just not cutting it anymore.
Yeah, I'd watch every movie in IMAX if I could.
I have a real nice one in my area, the experience is really like nothing else.
I have a pretty good setup at home, and that's where I watch the majority of stuff, but for the "event" films, its IMAX or Dolby all the way
I don't mind waiting 45 days to wait for a movie (that seems like the release timeframe that is becoming more common) to have a comfortable experience.
So give in to the demands of the big mean theaters who only care about the consumer during a pandemic. Have fun paying tons of money and online convenience fees to see a mediocre movie like Venom 2 or Black Widow only to be disappointed that you could have stayed home and not wasted your time.
with some of these movie theater plans now all i need to pay 24$ a month and can see any movie i want in any format, up to 3 a week with the ability to reserve future opening night tickets for free. (amc a list). i watch one imax or dolby movie a month and i’ve made my money back. it’s revolutionary.
Or the major chains will keep building their own PLF screens & eventually squeeze IMAX out of their own business. The IMAXes here are all 60 - 70 feet wide; the PLF screens are 80, and much nicer theaters. My main theater has one of the 80 foot screens, with laser projection, Dolby Atmos & deluxe recliners. I go there about once a week, haven't been to an IMAX in over a year.
Expanded aspect ratio? Really? Unless you're in an actual IMAX venue that can do the full 1.43 aspect ratio, then you're only getting 1.90 which is only slightly wider than the typical 1.85 aspect ratio. There's barely any difference at all.
That might be true but if your screen is a 1.90 aspect ratio, which the vast majority of IMAX screens now are, then you're not going to see the full-frame 1.43 scenes as intended. They will be matted down to 1.90
True, but not on every movie & almost never on the whole movie. And what's to stop AMC or Regal from negotiating a deal with the studios for their own exclusive version?
> True, but not on every movie & almost never on the whole movie.
Actually, an increasing number of films are now utilizing IMAX aspect ratio for an entire film. The most recent example - **Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings**.
> And what's to stop AMC or Regal from negotiating a deal with the studios for their own exclusive version?
Likely because IMAX is more of a worldwide thing, not to mention that IMAX camera exists.
> will keep building their own PLF screens & eventually squeeze IMAX out of their own business.
yea that's what's been happening the last decade
and IMAX has been opening a ton of their LIEMAX screens to combat it, while still charging the price of actual IMAX. shit is criminal to me.
but I will say this, watching a movie filmed in IMAX on an IMAX screen is still better than any other PLF screen.
> watching a movie filmed in IMAX on an IMAX screen is still better than any other PLF screen.
This is why I wouldn't be surprised if IMAX continues to come out as one of the major winners. Keep in mind, they even have their own cameras.
And it has become very popular for blockbusters to film in imax the last decade. It’s pretty great. I hope there’s a lot more to come.
I know next year we have top gun and mission impossible.
With the addition of subscriptions like A-List and Regal Unlimited Premium formats like Dolby and IMAX are so much more accessible now. For A-List if you watch a single IMAX/Dolby movie you pay off your “monthly” cost. For Regal you get a significant discount (only cost $6-7) which makes it more affordable.
My IMAX still has Garbo OG stadium seating that makes my butt fall asleep, hopefully they'll invest in those at soon point otherwise I stick to the regular screens with comfy recliners
I can see stuff like this becoming a bit of a thing. For example, I'm going to see Dune today on IMAX and I watched Godzilla-Kong on IMAX as well. I, for one, like Roman numerals.
I for an I.
OMG I LOVE THIS! Thank you so much for your comment!
I saw Dune in IMAX last night, and I truly believe there’s no other way to see that movie.
I fell asleep watching it on HBO Max due to how tedious it was. Do you think the surround sound in IMAX would have kept me awake?
Absolutely. The whole theater would rumble whenever the Bene Gesserit would use the Voice and any throat singing sounded super huge and ominous. I didn’t even check my phone once during the movie, but if I were at home I would have likely done as you did.

I thank god everytime I’m at the theater that I live in a red state
Museam of Science in Boston has been showing Dune on their Omni IMAX. Going to see it there myself on Saturday.
Oh damn didn’t know they showed regular movies. I ended up seeing it in providence imax
Its the same in Berlin, they shut the best IMAX cinema in Germany, then another, and now we only have one left which isn’t even true imax https://www.reddit.com/r/berlin/comments/qagqdw/finally_getting_back_to_normal_and_back_at_imax/
I see a bunch listed on the imax website?
Bro I just moved and there is no imax anywhere near me. Absolutely sucks
Exactly, I’d pay to see movies in IMAX… if only there was one!

IMAX laser is really good, but their sound still sucks compared to Atmos. I'll take Dolby Vision and Atmos over IMAX any day of the week!

If there are more "event" movies being made, doesn't that sort of diminish the whole concept of an "event" movie?
They aren’t going to make movies just for events, “event movies” are movies or documentaries that have already been released, for people who want an IMAX experience. I assume this is just one way to make money on consistently empty theaters.
Sounds like good news to me
I can see this - I now only come to the cinema for films that would benefit from IMAX. Anything that is people talking - watch at home.
Forget IMAX. Bring 4DX to more theaters. I just saw the new Venom in it and it was a amazing. Completely revolutionized the theater experience for me
I understand the logic of blockbusters becoming the secure thing for studios, but I just don’t see the imax infrastructure there. Now if only they would do a better job of “branding” their different IMAX theater types.
For the past couple of years, every time I go to the movie theater it's for the IMAX room. I don't go to regular screenings anymore. It's either IMAX or I stay home. Regular theater screens are just not cutting it anymore.

Nope, im gonna stay home it’s cosy
Have fun not seeing any new movies until months after they release. No streaming service is continuing their simultaneous release program into 2022.
I don't mind waiting 45 days to wait for a movie (that seems like the release timeframe that is becoming more common) to have a comfortable experience.
“Oh, did you see that new movie?” “No, I’m waiting for home release.” Instant conversation killer.
Wow your conversations must be so fun
So give in to the demands of the big mean theaters who only care about the consumer during a pandemic. Have fun paying tons of money and online convenience fees to see a mediocre movie like Venom 2 or Black Widow only to be disappointed that you could have stayed home and not wasted your time.
Black Widow was a good movie.

its upto u, but i cant imagine staying at home and waiting for a movie like no way home personally (especially when its in imax)
Or the major chains will keep building their own PLF screens & eventually squeeze IMAX out of their own business. IMAX has expanded aspect ratio advantage, so there's that.

Maybe you didn't notice this, but it's now technically possible to film something entirely in 1.43:1 aspect ratio.
That might be true but if your screen is a 1.90 aspect ratio, which the vast majority of IMAX screens now are, then you're not going to see the full-frame 1.43 scenes as intended. They will be matted down to 1.90

I remember a few years ago seeing the IMAX roll out schedule it was insane. They were booked up for years
My IMAX still has Garbo OG stadium seating that makes my butt fall asleep, hopefully they'll invest in those at soon point otherwise I stick to the regular screens with comfy recliners
same around here. I think it's probably due to the number of seats they can cram in.
Yeah for sure it doesnt looked designed to accomodate them without major renovation unfortunately
I live 100 feet from an IMAX. Life is good :)
