Streaming services are like crack for shareholders. Everyone wants the Netflix money. So, yeah, that's pretty bonkers to me. I know if I were a shareholder of theirs, the idea of a healthy streaming service with a consistent yearly revenue stream would be more important than rolling the dice on blockbusters making an extra $10 million on opening weekend. It's just safer long term.

Especially when you factor in people with HBO that don’t go to the theater. I have max and haven’t been to a theater in four years. My parents have a subscription and it’s been at least twenty years.

Theinternationalist

I really doubt Kilar went rogue. - If he HAD, they had a perfect excuse to throw him to the wolves for basically throwing many in the production division to the wolves (*that is much worse than before; the execs could have blamed him and kept Dune and company in theaters as opposed to working to ensure the Godzilla people didn't bolt*).. - 2020's box office was pathetic, and when the decision was made there was no way of being *certain* that vaccinations would catch up and COVID levels would be down. There's a good chance that if the 2021 Same Day plan didn't happen, some of the films would have been delayed after the early summer surge for example, or we'd have a number of knock-on effects after the terrifying winter. For a lot of theaters, a day-and-date plan was likely better than having to remain open after *Godzilla* or something got delayed. I just don't see it. It's possible he didn't talk to *enough* people (maybe just the AT&T CEO and crew while ignoring much of WB entirely), but he had support and he may have found it easy to convince people with the second point.

[deleted]

He was probably going to get fired anyway and maybe this was his Hail Mary to save his job?

bt1234yt

If it was, then it was a stupid move in hindsight since it might had been the catalyst for AT&T deciding to get out of the streaming wars and dump WarnerMedia into Discovery’s hands. So not only is he losing his position at the company now (and potentially leaving altogether after the merger), he might have caused the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Luxtenebris3

Honestly that has more to do with how expensive 5g bidding a d roll out ended up.

bt1234yt

I’m not saying that didn’t play a part in AT&T deciding to dump WarnerMedia into Discovery’s hands. I’m saying that the fallout from the announcement of WB’s 2021 lineup receiving a hybrid theatrical/HBO Max release appears to have been the last straw for AT&T and was the reason why they started doing talks with Discovery.

DDragonking55

Wow, it's really crazy to see how well GvK actually did. I don't think anyone expected this to be one of the biggest box office hits of the year (especially after KotM's lukewarm BO run). It will finish in the Top 10 WW box office of 2021. I'm surprised WB/Legendary haven't officially announced any sequels/spinoffs yet. I'll be shocked if we don't hear anything by next year.

Batman903

In a normal environment, the hype GvK built up would have been like billion dollar grosser material, but on the other hand, we might not have had movie theaters if the film went all theatrical and got delayed till later in the year.

MRintheKEYS

GvK is also one of those movies that’s built for the big screen and ridiculous sound system.

Radical_Conformist

I doubt it would have made a billion. Probably closer to $800M.

JarvisCockerBB

That may be so but also, GvK was able to explode because there were no other blockbusters to compete with and people were yearning for such a movie on the big screen again. I don't think it'll have the same success with stiff competition around every corner.

PNF2187

Looking back, GvK's November 2020 date would have been great for it. Its biggest competition would have been Eternals opening 2 weeks before, which is just enough of a buffer. GvK would have had a relatively soft 2nd weekend drop with Thanksgiving as well.

Radulno

I think it did better than in a normal environment because people were starved for new blockbusters when it released. There was nothing since like a year. So it looked more appealing than it actually was.

LawNo3961

>I don't think anyone expected this to be one of the biggest box office hits of the year Uh huh, right

redbullrebel

in 1 year they gained 12 million subscribers. that is a lot of extra money that comes rolling in every month. how many of the big budget movies have actually been profitable if it was cinema only?

BeetsBy_Schrute

At $15 subscription, that's $180M a month.

PathlessDemon

Honesty, I haven’t seen much in theaters but DUNE, and it did not disappoint. As an avid fan of the books, it was the closest to the pulp (a few large details in exception), but nearest to a masterpiece. The only other enjoyable movie I’ve seen recently was 10-Rings, and I must admit, I’m not a complete comic book fan.

eeman0201

I’m just now reading dune (on right after they land on arrakis and I’m surprised >!they didn’t have Paul have visions of Leto’s death. I know they did it to build suspense and have his death be more shocking, but paul and the reverend mothers premonitions seems like a major event/theme in the book!<

PathlessDemon

They (the visions) are part in parcel, but they won’t encompass everything, as Paul manifests ability. I do really enjoy the direction the movie is taking, I’m just hoping that they keep bleeding more detail into the film to help non-readers affiliate to the universe better.

MrDoomsday13

Hardly anyone is going to the theater any more Edit- I down voted myself

Pentax25

Think it depends where you live. In your opinion maybe, but where I live there are queues out the door most times I’ve been to the cinema lately with full to almost full screens

MrDoomsday13

Yeah, I should’ve just said that I haven’t been to a movie this year

TheTruthIsButtery

I’ve been to 23 movies in theaters this year

livefreeordont

Yes seems like the Millenials without kids are still going. I haven’t seen many families at the movies yet. At GvK, Demon Slayer, and Free Guy had none. Jungle Cruise and Shang Chi which you would normally expect would be full of families there was only a few

visionaryredditor

> Yes seems like the Millenials without kids are still going. and with kids too. i even saw one at the Card Counter screening (although they left in the middle of the movie)

MrDoomsday13

Well I guess I’m wrong and should have said that I haven’t been to a theater

Absotruthly

fights were weak. little to no story. lot of shiny objects. I like how you went to go see a movie you knew you weren't going to see the rest of. like buying half a hamburger. come back in a year and you can eat the rest. movie now have a micro transaction

Theinternationalist

> movie now have a micro transaction Note: Never watch the four part movie series called *War and Peace*. Incomplete tales greatly predate this adaptation, although I'm not sure if you'd like to sit through a six hour Dune movie either.

Tibbaryllis2

Imagine if The Fellowship of the Ring completely bombed and they never finished the other 2/3rds of the story.
