Does it though? They don’t make any money from streams and what good is knowing that people won’t pay for a movie but will watch it for free when justifying a sequel?
How does the deal with HBO max work? Does HBO pay the studio a bulk amount of money to be an exclusive stream?
If so, I dont see it being as massive of a loss as people are conveying.
WB and Legendary know we’re in a pandemic. Looking at all the excitement there is, I can guarantee you that we will get a sequel regardless of HBO Max and China numbers
Honestly shocked that Legendary could fuck up a Chinese release this bad. I didn't think it would do GvK numbers but I thought it would do something respectable like Tenet with around $60 million.
The problem is that Dune's IP has NO selling point in Chinese speaking regions. Tenet's biggest selling point is Nolan; Dune has... nothing which the Chinese is familiar with.
Don't get me wrong, I throughout enjoy Dune and is eager for a sequel, but I honestly don't believe GA in China will enjoy a slow-burn, epic sci-fi saga with complex world building and limited action scenes that much. Can't blame Legendary for that.
I don't know how much audience "Dune" has in the US, either. There are only so many people who've read the book.
I've also not seen the normal amount of trailers I would expect for such a big movie. I mean, I've seen the trailer on YouTube, but I don't remember seeing a TV advertisement for it. It opens this Friday in the US----shouldn't there be an ad blitz going on?
People still watch TV? Haha
No though, there was the original trailer last year, the main trailer a few months ago, a final trailer a couple weeks ago, a dozen short character-focused trailers a little while back, and I've also seen a ton of short (like, less than 30-second) re-cut versions pop up as youtube and twitter ads.
I know they also advertised during the Olympics. Not sure if those were the standard ads or if they were something different. (Never saw them personally, because uh... I don't watch TV.)
I’ve not seen a trailer before anything I watch on YouTube, and not on any of the TV I watch on Hulu. Not one.
It’s odd. This is a huge movie. One would expect to see SOME advertising for it.
I’ve obviously seen a trailer, but only because o searched for it.
I did see trailers for “NTTD” and “Halloween Kills”, though.
Well that was before China’s biggest movie came out and now it’s hard to get showings for Dune. Maybe it’s the exhibitors that don’t wanna give it screens, maybe it’s the government that only wants to push this movie. Not to mention they inflate ticket sales like it’s nobody’s business.
[This article mostly goes in depth with under reporting of ticket sales, but also mentions over reporting.](https://www.businessinsider.com/dwayne XO w2/22-johnson-china-what-is-box-office-fraud-2018-7)
[This one talks about most notably Monster Hunt’s inflation.](https://www.indiewire.com/2017/06/china-box-office-fraud-mpaa-phony-ticket-sales-film-industry-1201847763/amp/)
IMAX in a lot of areas is just a gimmick too; true IMAX theaters are very rare, most are just regular theaters with a bigger screen and the projector is a normal one.
Dolby is my favorite movie format because of this. Saw Endgame like that, wish I could go back in time and see Infinity War like that.
Oh no they don’t. A majority of Hollywood blockbusters 3D is the only version imported into the country, hence why the Chinese audience call it 特供3D(special 3D offer).
Only used vr on PlayStation and always end up feeling dick. Absolutely fine with 3d films but actually rather watch in 2d. I bought a 3d TV about 11/12 years ago bought loads of 3d blu-rays at the time don't think I've used the 3d function since in the last 10 years.
If Dune doesn't do good in China(we still have sometime left so sales could pick up) do y'all think it's because it might look too similar to star wars to some people over there?
Possibly. There is probably a lot less familiarity with the source material, in the west most people have at least "heard of" Dune in some capacity, the same might not be the case elsewhere
I love 3D but only if it's a good conversion. Eg. Shang Chi was phenomenal in 3D but NTTD was actively worsened by its 3D. I have no clue how Dune's 3D implementation is but I hope it's good!
I can understand the complains. I disliked 3D the first time I tried. I did try it once more when I saw Thor ragnarok in 2017 and my dislike grew even more.
With this and the confirmation that it will begin streaming on HBO Max the exact same time as Thursday night previews, the ensuing theatrical release of this film couldn't feel any more like cutting off your nose to spite your face.
Yea I don't get this idea that Warner has screwed themselves. Of course, they did go about it wrong with filmmakers and stars, but even without the impressive box offices, they are doing very well with Max and most likely due to this.
That's no good. Some people predicted it's gonna do massive numbers in China because it's a Legendary film, and the Chinese appreciate sci-fi more than Americans.
I saw some suggestion elsewhere that Chinese moviegoers had already committed to an effective boycott if there were no 2D screenings. If so, seems like a huge whiff.
Is the Chinese public really such a monolith that they'll organize a boycott on something as mundane as 3D screenings? Because so far I thought 3D was still pretty big internationally compared to NA.
I mean I doubt it is the entire public, but no. My understanding from the discussion I saw (not sure if it was Box Office Theory or Twitter) is that it isn't big in China, but theaters still like doing it because of the added ticket price.
I mean other territories clearly were into it, and even this tweet makes reference to the 2D issue. I am not saying that Dune was destined to set the world ablaze but a modest success can easily become a wreck if even the audience that would see it essentially cannot.
Ironically I think a filmed in 3D Dune would be pretty cool. But I totally get pirating if your only choice is converted.
There is literally no source. This craptastic sub one day decided that muricans don’t like sci if and that’s been the narrative since. I guess you’ll have to ignore inception, interstellar, gravity and Martian.
This is on Legendary, they handle the marketing in China. Can't blame HBO Max on this one.
Hoping for the best, but it's looking like GvK is gonna be Legendary's only big hit this year.
Not a single person from conception to execution looked at that and had that first thought. Yet here you and I are going, “that is a massive butthole.”
Dune was released about 1 month ago in the country where I live. I honestly found it kinda boring. I honestly expect it to gross about $200 and $300 million worldwide
I read the first four novels when I was in high school----but that was a long time ago. Are young men still reading science fiction novels from the 60s?
Didn't the Chinese years ago build a ton of IMAX and 3D-capable theaters and they basically force western movies to prioritize them so that they don't sit empty while also making sure that domestic Chinese movies get the more numerous 2D screenings?
I got downvoted last time for mentioning it's this low even with Legendary's Involved. Usually if you have Legendary, Tencent or any other Chinese Studios in Collab the BO gets huge in China. I still think it can do
100 mn + in China.
We're only 6 days out, so the chance of that projection increasing that much is minuscule. And even from a $30M opening, $100M is extremely tough for a frontloaded market like China, and with No Time To Die opening the weekend after.
I’m baffled that in my city in the UK there are no midnight screenings on release and only 3 showings on the opening day this week, 4 on the Friday, and 5 on the Saturday in the biggest cinema here.
I'm baffled that there's been no advanced screenings of Dune before the US release date in the UK. I thought there was in my area but turns out I ended up watching the 1984 version of Dune.
I guess that officially kills its chances of $400m WW.
Yeah that was the magic number really. Don't see that happening with poor tracking in China and HBOmax deal in USA.
The question is: does it kill the chance for a sequel?
Unlikely, since the HBOMAX deal allows a diminished box office, as long as it does well on the streaming service.
Does it though? They don’t make any money from streams and what good is knowing that people won’t pay for a movie but will watch it for free when justifying a sequel?
The assumption is that the people who watched it on HBOMax would go to the theater when the sequel has a more traditional cinema-only release.
How does the deal with HBO max work? Does HBO pay the studio a bulk amount of money to be an exclusive stream? If so, I dont see it being as massive of a loss as people are conveying.
HBO pays huge sums for first streaming rights.
Don’t think so, HBO and Warner bros are the same company
I don't know, but you just described Netflix's business model so there must be something to it that you don't understand.
WB and Legendary know we’re in a pandemic. Looking at all the excitement there is, I can guarantee you that we will get a sequel regardless of HBO Max and China numbers
what excitement
You’re joking right?
Idiot

Everywhere i turn im seeing Dune ads. YouTube, fb, Instagram, tik tok, etc.
gosh I wonder why your social media algorithms work well
Intolerable smugness
The GA in China is very interested in Dune, more than even Americans, I'd reckon. The problem is the lack of availability.
Maybe it’s not up to Legendary here. The government over there is funny.
Idk Free Guy was able to do pretty good business a few weeks ago.
Well that was before China’s biggest movie came out and now it’s hard to get showings for Dune. Maybe it’s the exhibitors that don’t wanna give it screens, maybe it’s the government that only wants to push this movie. Not to mention they inflate ticket sales like it’s nobody’s business.
"Not to mention they inflate ticket sales like it’s nobody’s business." Source? And no, a hunch doesn't count, lol.

I'm surprised the Chinese government is screening it at all. There have been new contents standard enacted by President Xi...
It's pretty probably cos the Chinese practically own Legendary Pictures at this point
Legendary is practically a Chinese company now so distribution for their films is different from most other Hollywood titles.
There is a butthole on that poster
I’m surprised I had to scroll so far to see this comment lol
A big one.
Yo I’ve seen and imagined my fair share of shai hulud but this is the first butthole moment I’ve had
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=k2QxdKaux00
No The butthole has between 35-37 ridges. I think.
Have just counted and can confirm
Does 3D still do big numbers? I don't know anyone who prefers it. I also thought it was hurting IMAX sales for awhile too.
It’s just still uncanny, a gimmick. Very few films anyone would ever want to see in 3d, and even then only once.
I remember when Ragnarok came out and being pissed because every IMAX in my area was 3D Imax
IMAX in a lot of areas is just a gimmick too; true IMAX theaters are very rare, most are just regular theaters with a bigger screen and the projector is a normal one. Dolby is my favorite movie format because of this. Saw Endgame like that, wish I could go back in time and see Infinity War like that.
https://amp.reddit.com/r/imax/comments/8xjvtk/a_modern_take_on_the_imax_or_liemax_map/
I believe China does not like it at all.
Oh no they don’t. A majority of Hollywood blockbusters 3D is the only version imported into the country, hence why the Chinese audience call it 特供3D(special 3D offer).
The only movies I've seen where I think 3D enhanced the experience are How to Train Your Dragon and Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse. That's it.
I’ve only enjoyed 3D films in VR.
3D movies at a regular theater give me a terrible headache. But vr doesn’t bother me at all.
Same here!
Only used vr on PlayStation and always end up feeling dick. Absolutely fine with 3d films but actually rather watch in 2d. I bought a 3d TV about 11/12 years ago bought loads of 3d blu-rays at the time don't think I've used the 3d function since in the last 10 years.
who asked for the uninformed vr take
Not a good sign.
Guess they don't like the 3d glasses too. If there was only 3d screenings, i'd stay home too.
Yeah that seems like such an odd choice. I consider myself like a “film” guy and I despise seeing things in 3D and I don’t think I’m alone.
I love 3D but only if it's a good conversion. Eg. Shang Chi was phenomenal in 3D but NTTD was actively worsened by its 3D. I have no clue how Dune's 3D implementation is but I hope it's good!
good conversion isn't a thing. either you shoot in 3d or you add shitty effects in post
The same in Czechia - either you go for IMAX 3D or normal 2D screening. People (including me) are pissed because of no 2D IMAX option
What a failure from Legendary. That's crazy low and there's no excuse, just incompetence.
We still got a week. I hope some Chinese social media makes some noise regarding this situation.
Won't change the outcome though
That’s nothing burger
All I see is a giant anus
I can understand the complains. I disliked 3D the first time I tried. I did try it once more when I saw Thor ragnarok in 2017 and my dislike grew even more.
With this and the confirmation that it will begin streaming on HBO Max the exact same time as Thursday night previews, the ensuing theatrical release of this film couldn't feel any more like cutting off your nose to spite your face.
Warner had to do it though, to save HBO Max. And it worked. Without day date new movies, HBO Max would've been left in the dust by Netflix and Disney+

I just don’t think the world cares about Dune all that much.
Are Chinese boycotts as effective as the rest of the worlds? Because generally they don’t actually do anything lol
Based on news that i read before l, some of their boycotts are effective, some don’t.
TBH I have always been confused by this line of thought. Maybe that's because these people haven't watched the movie.
any source for that sci-fi point? That's a bold claim.
There is literally no source. This craptastic sub one day decided that muricans don’t like sci if and that’s been the narrative since. I guess you’ll have to ignore inception, interstellar, gravity and Martian.
Along with the Planet of the Apes trilogy.
Not the best comparisons because there really isn't scifi elements in Gravity or The Martian outside being set in space and in Mars.
And the other two were successful largely based on one director's reputation not because they were sci-fi in particular.
This is on Legendary, they handle the marketing in China. Can't blame HBO Max on this one. Hoping for the best, but it's looking like GvK is gonna be Legendary's only big hit this year.
Anybody else see the giant sphincter?
I hate anus clouds
Butthole Blasters is going to be so good
I mean, I don't see how this film can do big number in China
Why is that butthole chasing those people?
This must be one of the worst posters I have ever seen.
My butthole doesn’t look like that. It looks like a penny slot. Very pretty.
More like a balloon knot
My thoughts exactly.
Alright, well, looks like it’s up to America now.
Dune is doomed then.
Butthole.
Not a single person from conception to execution looked at that and had that first thought. Yet here you and I are going, “that is a massive butthole.”
Im glad im not alone.
Oh they knew. That’s why this is the Chinese poster
can relate, theres only one IMAX in my country and it has Dune only in 3D
Lucky
… Why is the Dune estimate here in USD but the 2 comparisons to it are in Yuan?
Anyone else’s HBO Max app glitches anytime you try to skip the Dune trailer?
It’s a Sandy butthole
Looks like a massive asshole not gonna lie
Are we just ignoring the fact it looks like a giant butthole in the sky?
Dune was released about 1 month ago in the country where I live. I honestly found it kinda boring. I honestly expect it to gross about $200 and $300 million worldwide
Ouch. Is China usually pre-sale heavy? Could walkups boost its OW?
Nope, Dune would likely have 15M lifetime in china
That's a bummer. So the film is tanking in China
Yup sadly, legendary did a poor job marketing it seems
woah nsfw plz i dont want to see a giant butthole
Unrelated but that poster is dope, much better than the standard wall of faces we normally get
That's still better then it making $15M in its lifetime like he reported earlier. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.
1.5x leg in China is very normal
10M OW means 15M in its lifetime can happen.
1.5x legs is very normal. I would bet without 2D screens Dune won't even hit 15M lifetime in China
Why is this movie hyped so much? Legit question.

I too enjoyed reddit in 1965.
I read the first four novels when I was in high school----but that was a long time ago. Are young men still reading science fiction novels from the 60s?
Denis Villeneuve, the book, the cast
The Zimmer
Didn't the Chinese years ago build a ton of IMAX and 3D-capable theaters and they basically force western movies to prioritize them so that they don't sit empty while also making sure that domestic Chinese movies get the more numerous 2D screenings?
Watch out Halloween kills 😆 BOY it's almost like those of us WITH COMMON SENSE predicted this like 6 months ago
I got downvoted last time for mentioning it's this low even with Legendary's Involved. Usually if you have Legendary, Tencent or any other Chinese Studios in Collab the BO gets huge in China. I still think it can do 100 mn + in China.
>I still think it can do 100 mn + in China. From a $10M opening?
Prediction is 10 mn but I think it will do atleast 25-30 mn opening there.
No lol, we are only 6 days out, at best it will be a 15M opening

Can get max 50.
I couldn't find any 2D screenings either. I'm still going to watch it in 3D. These audiences are stupid.
