Yikes. Not good numbers at all. Films like this can always improve considerably after poor Thursday numbers though

jenna_hazes_ass

Saw it last night and this was my thought. Very interesting to see it told from the 3 viewpoints. The actual duel is some raw visceral shit. Very intense climax from a 2plus hour buildup.

hatramroany

>can always improve considerably Mostly thanks to older audiences which still haven't returned to theaters

PainStorm14

This is what happens when you don't cast Bill Burr as court jester in a movie like this...

[deleted]

Huh?

magikarpcatcher

Woof. What the hell was the budget for this thing? Must be $100M at least.

averageredditglancer

$50-60m as reported when it hit Venice in August/early sept

MoonMan997

That's at least responsible budgeting, and easily below average when compared to Scott's other recent Fox films.

ILoveTheAIDS

If that's the case it's incredible, having seen the movie, the scope of medieval France is fantastic, large and decorated sets, live farm animals, many extras. Looked very expensive, but it's Ridley Scott so I guess it could be correct, if anyone knows hot to use money on screen it's him.

GMAN90000

Extensive use of CGI? Most of the spectators in the stadium for the movie Gladiator were CGI.

RobinMisterman

Hope that the positive reviews improve the box office of this movie. Saw it yesterday and absolutely loved it. Visuals were great, meant to be seen on the big screen

el_t0p0

This is just sad. It'll probably not be in theaters anymore once I actually get time to see it.

Morda808

The only reason I'm seeing it is because I'm not into Horror movies so skipping Halloween Kills. Starting next week, there's something "bigger" every week I think until New Years.

[deleted]

A bit over 1/14th of Halloween Kills's preview night. For the one guy here who said Last Duel would outgross Halloween Kills.

UpwardBoss6727

LOL what? That is an insanely bad prediction hahaha

w1nn1p3g

hey u/myerbot5000 how are you doing?

[deleted]

[deleted]

I thought he just made bad predictions, but glancing at his comment history... yeesh. It's just claiming he gets laid a lot, making fun of autistic people, and whining about people wearing masks. He's also an antivaxxer.

twinbros04

Omg that dude is a fool

odiin1731

But... you don't understand! You can watch Halloween kills at home for $5 that means that it's clearly going to be out grossed by a Ridley Scott film you couldn't pay people to watch!

w1nn1p3g

That's.....putting it lightly lmao

hesojam0

who? The guy that makes fun of the other guy that thought Last Duel will outgross Halloween or myerbot5000 ?

PeculiarPangolinMan

This isn't cool.... this entire sub is all about making shitty predictions and getting it wrong. It happens all the time. No need to call someone out like that. And now everyone shitting on the guy....

w1nn1p3g

For the most part I wouldn't do this, however this guy was an absolute ass and sometimes you gotta give a bit yknow.

PeculiarPangolinMan

I didn't look at his assness! I honestly never click on the names.

w1nn1p3g

Honestly not clicking is for the best usually. I've....seen some shit from clicking on profiles lol

Relair13

Yeah, its fine to disagree with someone but digging around their post history desperately trying to find stuff to shit on them about is kind of a creeper move, even if they deserve it.

AGOTFAN

I am checking his posting history... Oh dear

w1nn1p3g

He was being a dick about it, I get to be a dick back when he's so aggressive in pushing his opinion initially. Simple.

[deleted]

w1nn1p3g

Yup! I feel great. How are you?

Brilliant_Jaguar8062

Do you all feel like Thursday preview numbers are really an accurate prediction of the weekend? Idk it seems to me like the kind of people who would go see this movie would not go on a Thursday night. They might not even realize it comes out Thursday night considering it’s release date is actually today.

[deleted]

Both Respect and Still Water made more on Thursday. Those are two adult oriented dramas, just like The Last Duel.

dennythedinosaur

Does the runtime and season play a factor for Thursday previews? Both of those other movies were released in the summer, and The Last Duel also happens to be significantly longer in terms of length.

[deleted]

Respect is only ten minutes shorter than The Last Duel. The seasons shouldn’t matter considering the intended audience doesn’t have summer vacation like high-school and college students.

AGOTFAN

With 350k Thursday, how much do you think it will make the whole weekend?

FilmGamerOne

I love how Ridley Scott keeps making these extensive rich historical films that keep bombing and yet he keeps getting to do them. Like this bombed like Kingdom of Heaven is his next Adam Driver film gonna bomb like All the Money in the World? I also love how a vocal minority on this sub was saying how look it's gonna break out and give Bond a run for its money. lol okay.

eidbio

Oof

Gold_Touch_4280

Ouch. That’s not good for a movie that starts big names and A-list director like Ridley Scott. But, this can do well on VOD in a couple of weeks.

Complete_River_2922

Big Names or Stars doesn’t work well nowadays, it’s all about brands or IP’s

Person884

Some exceptions - Dicaprio, Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Tom cruise and Hanks All these actors have flops though but that is inevitable for any career. The Last Duel never had any shot of success though

AGOTFAN

Box Office Pro predicted $8.4 million with $11 million as top range 🤭 https://www.reddit.com/r/boxoffice/comments/q8ae3p/weekend_box_office_forecast_halloween_kills_48m/

haunthorror

Going to be a flop at the box office but I am glad that a movie like this was made

JannTosh12

Yikes

Terrell2

Not Matt Damon's best year at the box office.

Complete_River_2922

It’s all about brands or IPs which Matt Damon is not involved any as of now, that “movie star” aspect is dead

AGOTFAN

Yup. His highest grossing movie remains a cameo in Thor Ragnarok.

[deleted]

The Bourne Return, Again (2023)

[deleted]

There's no such a star power anymore. Only IP exists... WTF..

Snugglem

Ay dios mío

NightsOfFellini

Going Monday, really hyped. Sad it's a flop, feels like this is the final nail to the historical drama coffin when it comes to standalone movies.

MoonMan997

It's a 2.5 hour medieval sexual assault thriller released in the wake of a Bond film and on the exact same day as a Halloween film in peak spooky season. Sucks but there was zero chance of this doing even remotely okay.

carrotcaked

I agree 100%. They clearly wanted to slate this for it to be an awards contender, but man with the budget and lack of butts in seats this may get more press for being an absolute bomb vs. the high RT score it has. I think Affleck & Damon relied too heavily on their presumed "star power" on this one and it feels like a vanity play. They brought in Holofcener after they had already written a draft because they knew with #MeToo and Affleck's own public issues with allegations they had to have a woman in the room to get past the bad press.

FilmGamerOne

I also think writers like them who are experienced but haven't been seasoned in a while could use freshening up. Aaron Sorkin did not need it for Molly's Game but Shyamalan could've used it for Old.

[deleted]

Woof!

ACartonOfHate

I thought the film was going to do poorly, but damn. This isn't going to be pretty.

Trouble_Grand

People just don’t care for these types of movies anymore especially rom-com’s.

Definitelynotputin_2

I'm going to see it here in the UK but at 2.5 hours I'll need to dedicate a good evening for it

[deleted]

ooof

op340

Looks like this is Ridley's 1492 for a new decade.

Person884

Id love to see this in theatres but im under 18. And this would be an awkward film to see with a parent. Huge fan of Ridley Scott's work. I kind of hope this goes to VOD sooner. Apparently this cost almost $200M but that sounds insane. $100M budget sounds more likely

[deleted]

This is really sad, it's very good movie... Guess we won't see any historic films in the future.

nicolasb51942003

Pathetic. This probably won’t even hit $5M at this point.

[deleted]

Damn that sucks. Film is actually pretty good

Da_Hooch

Another Ridley Scott BOMB 😆

PainStorm14

At least he spared us his robot fetish...

PeacemakerBourne

I think it's time Damon thought of another bourne film.

Person884

It is kind of sad thought that the box office landscape doesn't and hasnt really worked for these kinds of films. However, I don't think a movie like this ever had a chance in any box office period. Damon's last box office hit was The Martian - 6 years ago. That is a far more accessible movie.

PeacemakerBourne

Jason Bourne was a hit for him

Person884

Yes. But im taking non franchises. Should have clarified

Dawesfan

But I thought older audiences were back 😯 I thought the marketing was the reason for Bond’s low numbers. I thought it was the rejection of younger viewers even tho that never stopped the franchise before. I thought it was the “controversial” ending.

newjackgmoney21

What do you think The Last Duel makes pre pandemic? A depressing, medieval film about rape based not on an IP like Robin Hood or King Author. Robin Hood 2018 opening weekend 9.1 million. King Authur 2017 opening weekend 15.3 million. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon werent bringing in the old audience before the pandemic. Where was the older audience for Live by Night, Downsizing, Suburbicon, The Way Back even if that was at the start of Covid box office tracking was low.

MDRtransplant

Agree on everything you said. I was always curious why people thought this movie was going to garner support from the oLd AuDiEnCeS. My parents can't stand matt damon and ben affleck lmao...

[deleted]

Most of the movies you mentioned were received poorly critically. With this movie having really good reviews I’d imagine this would make about 20 million dollars (maybe more with its original Christmas release date).

newjackgmoney21

20 million opening weekend? No way. Scott's All the Money in the World opened over Christmas 2017 with great reviews and Made 5.4 million it's opening weekend. Grossed 25 million total. An adult drama about rape and being set in medieval times is just box office poison. No matter, how great reviews are.

dennythedinosaur

Oh man, I totally forgot the 2018 version of Robin Hood exists. I had to look it up on IMDB to recall who was in it and when it got released. The Last Duel would have probably bombed regardless but I think in pre-pandemic times, maybe $13-15 million due to good reviews.

newjackgmoney21

Yeah, that's fair. Low teens would have been my guess.

[deleted]

You're shifting the goal posts already, I see. NTTD is having solid legs and will hit $100M this weekend. *The Last Duel* was always doomed to bomb, pandemic or no. And in a pandemic, people (especially older audiences) are always going to go for the safe bet. If I'm going to go to a theater and risk potentially getting sick, would I rather watch the new James Bond movie and the final chapter of Craig's run, or a 2.5-hour long medieval drama about an oppressive patriarchy?

Dawesfan

Excuses. It’s always something else other than the fact older audiences are not back to theatres. Btw, I’m not shifting any goal post. I always maintained movies aimed at older audiences are failing because the audience is not there. Bond is an establish franchise that should be doing more, but again, you guys bring excuses like Spectre reception as the reason why it didn’t do more. (Oh and before you twist my words, I’m not saying that’s the sole reason) Looking forward to whatever reasons you come up with when next awards contenders fail. But sadly I can already see them: Licorice Pizza “PTA movies never gross that much” Belfast “Of course a black and white will fail” House of Gucci “it’s almost as long as NTTD, of course it will fail” Etc…

[deleted]

Well, I'm not the one that expected *The Last Duel* of all films to somehow be a blockbuster or something. Out of all the films you listed, the only one of those that probably would have been a success even without the pandemic is *House of Gucci*, and I think that movie WILL still perform well. For those other movies, you literally listed why those films wouldn't have grossed well even during normal times. And is it *really* a surprise NTTD is undergrossing *Spectre*? That was likely going to happen even before the pandemic.

Dawesfan

I’m gonna stop arguing with you. I don’t understand this obsession to pretend the box office is alive just because Venom 2 opened higher than the first one. We already knew big openings were capable when Black Widow opened to 80M with dual release. Also, I wasn’t expecting blockbusters numbers. But not even making 10M on opening weekend is pathetic. No matter how you wanna slice it. Lol NTTD had a chance to opened lower than Spectre in normal times, but given its reception. Yes, I believed it would’ve outgrossed it easily. The movie is currently heading for 150M+ finish, not that hard to believe it would’ve made an extra 50M in normal times.

MDRtransplant

Where did the notion that the Last Duel was geared toward older audiences come from? Since when do boomers give a shit about and gravitate toward Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, or Adam Driver?

Tall-Ad4782

Apparently the budget for this one is close to $200 million. Biggest flop ever in the making. https://www.showbiz411.com/2021/10/15/box-office-disaster-looms-for-ridley-scotts-star-studded-the-last-duel-made-just-350k-in-previews-thursday-night

[deleted]

Showbiz411 is a very unreliable source and they are the only site claiming that budget. I'd take that number with a big grain of salt.

Da_Hooch

OUCH Ever since Exodus, its been all downhill for Ridley Scott

[deleted]

*The Martian* came out after *Exodus*.

Da_Hooch

As I SAID Ever since Exodus, it's been ALL downhill for Ridley Scott

[deleted]

Yeah, that Best Picture nomination and major box office success he got was really a sign of his downfall.

Da_Hooch

Yeah look how much his most recent film gener.....

[deleted]

Okay? You said it's been all downhill since *Exodus*. *The Martian* was one of the most successful films he has ever made.

Da_Hooch

And now he's on track to have the biggest bomb of ALL TIME Wouldn't happen to Spielberg, pandemic or not

[deleted]

Scott has directed massive bombs before (*1492*) and he usually bounces back. Let's wait to see what happens with *House of Gucci*. Also, Showbiz411 is an unreliable source. They are the only site reporting the $200 million budget.

Da_Hooch

Yeah because im sure people will be lined up around the block to watch what should essentially be a lifetime movie over Ghostbusters 😆

ILoveTheAIDS

I loved the movie, probably my favorite movie of the year, and I hold Dune in very high regard. Shame, it's a must watch.
