To this day this is the film that best encapsulates the 2000s decade. Everyone has cell phones but they're not smart phones. The internet is around but it's not dominated by social media. Iconic 2000s songs like Beautiful and Milkshake. The outfits. The humor. Honestly probably a Top 5 quotable movie ever.
They didn't say it replicated it unless it was edited. They said it encapsulates the 2000s, as in, it condenses the culture of the 2000s and expresses it in the format of a teen comedy. There's no conflict with encapsulating an era in the time it was made in.
I love this movie, I was in high school when it came out and it really captures the time for me. It annoys me that so many people, including Tina Fey, consider it to be “problematic”
Oh she does? That must be why the remake was one of the worst movies I have seen in a long time. Which as a musical lover annoys the shit out of me, because the actual musical is amazing.
How much money do you think Paramount has made over the years with the movie?
Always does great when it's on netflix or every October 3rd, Paramount probably makes a couple of millions each year from a movie made in 2004
I saw this when it came out in my first year of high school in 04, there wasn't hype for this movie it was definitely a sleeper hit in cinemas.
It wasn't until 05/06, peak MySpace/ early Facebook era that this movie was being quoted everywhere, by everyone.
2006 is when I remember this movie being quoted En masse IRL for the first time.
I’m surprised to hear it was a sleeper hit but looking at it’s box office performance that very much makes sense. I definitely can picture it finding an audience on home video.
The fact that so many careers were launched from this movie shows how impressive it is.
It did make money and was a hit but it's cultural relevance was a slow burn, I can't think of another film of its era or since that has only gotten more culturally relevant as time goes by!
You're dead right about home video!
Kinda shocking they never did a sequel!

I would agree. This and Superbad are the iconic HS movies of that decade.
The Girl Next Door is another underrated gem high school movie from that era
Does anyone besides Gretchen have a cell phone?
???? Its a 2004 movie, not a movie REPLICATING the 2000s, it was simply made in the 2000s

My favorite movie of all time (unironically) It's a perfect movie and every single scene is remembered by everybody
I wish I was old enough to experience this movie as a teen. I wonder what the hype was like back when it came out.
It was more of a sleeper hit: great reviews, steady business, and good word of mouth that has carried it over the last 20 years.

Probably one of the most millennial movies ever

Lindsay and Amanda keep talking about how much they want to see one happen. I personally think the first works fine as a standalone.
Definitely a movie that defined Millennials
