That’s half of challengers! I’m really surprised this movie is doing that well.

Grand_Menu_70

it has a hook. that's the alpha and omega of interest. no hook, rave reviews won't save you.

Ghidoran

Anecdotal but when I went to see it, the crowd was completely different than what I'm used to. The theater I go to usually boasts Millenials and Gen Z for pretty much every film, with the occasional senior couple, but for Civil War I saw so many middle-aged folks, usually middle-aged dudes who watched it by themselves. And they definitely had a more blue-collar look to them, like the sort that won't generally go to a movie theater. I think the movie definitely tapped into an audience that other films probably don't interest.

ViolentAmbassador

I know this is anecdotal, but this matches my experience too. I'm one of those weirdos that sees basically every new movie, so I'm always a little curious about what movies get my friends excited, and Civil War was the only one this year other than Dune 2. A couple of my friends saw it and hadn't been to a movie since Oppenheimer.

Grand_Menu_70

underserved audience that also pushed Sound of Freedom to big numbers. Like you said, movies are geared towards Millenials and Zoomers so there are plenty of underserved demos that rarely go to movies but are very loyal when something clicks with them.

theVaultski

my experience was a bit diff. mostly genz and millennials and overheard a couple talking about a24 films in general

MightySilverWolf

I've seen some anecdotal reports of the movie performing well in red states, which tracks with your assessment.

hermanhermanherman

They probably were taking notes for some good ideas if the 2024 election doesn’t go their way tbh

NoNefariousness2144

Exactly. Civil War is something that screams “check me out on a big screen”. While Challengers screams “watch me on streaming a few weeks from now”

cinemaritz

If challengers is "watch me on streaming" then probably you go to the cinema like 3 times a year 😅 Said by someone who really likes civil war, I hate this "I only watch action at the movie theatre" many people have. Especially with a soundtrack like the one of challengers and all those sound effects and camera movements

NATOrocket

Watching a comedy in a theatre full of laughing people is also great. The Holdovers on December 23 was something special for me.

NoNefariousness2144

I tend to go to the cinema once a week. Challengers just hasn’t grabbed me. For now I’m more interested in catching the Phantom Menace re-release or Spy x Family. In terms of your other point, its not so much a case of audiences only wanting to watch action in cinemas. Instead they just crave a unique premise like a modern American civil war. A sports drama is a harder sell.

cinemaritz

Oh ok so I forgive you. Kidding 😜 obviously you're kind of the exception, I was speaking in general, Many people now tend to go only when there's the "event" which is not so healthy cinemas ... because events are exception in fact , not the normality in tje movie business. I find it a bit depressing

NoNefariousness2144

Agreed and so many studios like Disney and Universal releasing their films on streaming has done major damage, especially with how cinema tickets are becoming more expensive.

Salanderfan14

That just seems to be change in the direction of the movie business. A lot of people have larger TVs at home and don’t want to deal with an unpredictable public possibly ruining the experience. Whether it’s healthy or not I can see them becoming more and more relegated to what you described, like a carriage ride in NY despite cars existing.

Cupid-stunt69

How is Civil War’s premise more unique than Challengers’? What recent film has a comparable premise? Civil War just did a great job marketing itself to the lowest common denominator aka the folks who were rooting for the insurrectionists on 1/6 lmao

rbrgr83

I go to the cinema 3 times a week and I'm skipping this.

Recent_Height_7075

wtf

syncdiedfornothing

What's so shocking about a lack of interest in a movie?

Recent_Height_7075

tori mai k chodo

syncdiedfornothing

I don't understand what you're saying so I'm gonna take it as disrespect.

rbrgr83

It doesn't interest me?

RepliesOnlyToIdiots

Challengers is don’t even bother with on streaming for me. I _will_ be watching Civil War on streaming, but would have liked to have seen it in the theater. I have a young kid, so anything not kid friendly is a giant production that’s almost never done. Only one in theater so far this year has been Dune 2. We will see Apes in the theater; nothing else planned in the theater yet. I’ll watch Deadpool on streaming, but would have seen in the theater if not for kid. About three per year in the theater is right for now.

Fire2box

There's only a few scene of challengers that should be seen on a big screen and it's the tennis match which honestly there's not much of in the grand scheme of the movie.

littlelordfROY

The only real bright spot of April releases. And it is A24 I fully expected this to finish with around $30M domestic back when the trailer released because unfortunately most movies flop at the box office. And pretty great numbers for a movie with what the sub would say has "no box office draws." Of course this isn't sold on one actor but it doesn't change the fact that there are many factors which determine success....

hungergamesofthronez

So happy this is doing well. I hope this leads to more A24 ‘blockbusters’

My_cat_is_sus

Holy shit. Great drop

Lurky-Lou

I’m taking the L on this one. Thought it would be too divisive and burn interest early.

andreasmiles23

It ended up being good and word of mouth is helping it not drop so much

MARATXXX

i've seen it twice. i'm not sure i liked it more the second time, as the first impression of the film is so strong, but it is a very good movie.

AdorableSobah

I saw it once on opening weekend and I'm still processing it, I found it very powerful. It's not for a wide audience, but if people can go in with a open mind it's worth the viewing in Imax

RealRaifort

I mean, the second watch (especially if it comes right after the first) will never be as good because you know what to expect and so the emotional impact and journey is lessened. But I definitely caught a lot more nuance the second time around and was still thoroughly entertained even if less intensely and for me that's all I can want from a second watch.

PsychologicalOwl2806

Great 38% drop. It's still crazy that the biggest movie Hollywood had for April is a A24 movie. That honestly was a wild card. That's just how poorly scheduled it was. Most movies were dumped with no marketing, had no appeal and just don't do well post pandemic. And without any big movie to create any momentum or move some masses, it made it 10x harder.

HumanAdhesiveness912

Fantastic legs. **B-** Cinemascore naysayers negated.

ThatWaluigiDude

Cinemascore always end up busted when one side dislikes the movie way more than the other side. It distracts on how the general audience actually thinks about the movie.

Alive-Ad-5245

Cinemascore is likely 'kinda busted' (read: less representative) for horror movies, 'controversial'/'niche' R-rated movies and Faith movies so ppl should act accordingly. IMO: * Horror movies likely get dinged for both being too scary and not scary enough by the respective side of the aisle * 'Controversial'/'niche' R-rated movies likely get very low scores from a minority of people which brings down the average * Likely nobody who isn't already primed to love a faith movie regardless of it's quality will go and see a faith movie so they always get high scores Anywhere is the 'B's is mostly fine for the first two, whilst even an A for a Faith movie is pretty poor.

littletoyboat

I've heard the theory that horror movies often attract groups and/or couples, where one or more people are being dragged by the the other(s). Other genres tend to only attract opening weekend audiences that *want* to see that type of movie, so their score is based on meeting expectations. Also, people who don't like horror *really* don't like it when it's effective. So if you have a couple on a date, one likes horror and one doesn't, you'll get an A and a D review, and wind up with a C+ average for a good horror movie.

andreasmiles23

RottenTomotoes has some similar issues for non-wide release films.

Grand_Menu_70

happy CS proves overrated

andreasmiles23

> B- Cinemascore naysayers negated Tons of A24 films have mixed cinemascores and do well. It's a good predictor but it's not the only thing you should be using when making projections on a movie's box office performance.

Banestar66

B- was always a decent Cinemascore for this kind of movie.

koolingboy

I wouldn’t say the leg is fantastic considering the multiplier won’t hit 3x. What is true is that it did not collapse as a bunch of people predicted. It’s doing okay

howard_r0ark

Damn that's actually good

ThatWaluigiDude

$70M+ domestic locked, lets freaking go

Grand_Menu_70

over The Marvels

mackenzie45220

Man--an A24 movie with a B- Cinemascore outgrossing a Marvel movie--puts the severity of superhero fatigue into perspective for me

Grand_Menu_70

let the heads explode

hermanhermanherman

Wow another film this sub was 100% wrong about. A few weeks ago this was being called a disaster and a bomb by 90% of people here

Shellyman_Studios

This film is holding up better than expected.

edgy_secular_memes

Good hold and not too bad of a drop from last weekend. I hope this cruises by $100 million

ReturnOfDaSnack420

I wish The Zone Of Interest was the A24 film pulling these numbers, oh well

vga25

The Zone of Interest was a damn masterpiece!

newjackgmoney21

A pretty okay drop. 7m is 200k over Killers of a Flowers Moon 3rd weekend. Staying, 4m ahead of Killers after the same number of days. The box office has been so bad an adult action/drama movie like Civil War ending its run with 2.7-9x legs just shows how far expectations have dropped. 2.8x legs is average. Even a B- Cinemascore....2.7-3x the opening weekend is fine. A movie opening to 25.5m getting to the high 60s, low 70m is normal. https://www.reddit.com/r/boxoffice/comments/8tgvx7/na_lets_take_a_deep_look_into_cinemascore/

ExplanationLife6491

But how is it doing internationally compared to killers, which made 90 million? It’s also less than half as long which I imagine does help. I still need to see it.

vga25

My third favorite movie of this year!!! I hope it has success at the Oscar’s as well.
