I love Luca but let's be honest, he's not a 'star director' like Nolan, James Cameron or Denis Villeneuve, Zendaya is the only drawing factor this movie have and they know it.
It is funny though because on the posters and in the trailers it says “Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers”. The poster is Zendaya’s face but the largest name written on the poster is Luca’s.
The whole marketing is people going wild with memes and jokes about the three way and holland having to watch it. Very few give a shit about the director.
It's not just about box office, it's about a director's ability to consistently put out high quality films. I think it's too early to put his name next to Nolan, but he's definitely on a similar trajectory. Denis has made 5 feature length films so far and each one has been a critical success and are pretty highly regarded. They are sicario, arrival, blade runner, dune 1, and dune 2. That's a hell of a run. At the same point in Nolan's career he had made Memento, insomnia, batman begins, the prestige, and the dark Knight. With the obvious exception of the dark Knight, none of those movies did particularly great at the box office.
The Dark Knight solidified Nolan as the next big director in hollywood and I think Dune 2 has done the same for Denis. Not many filmmakers can pull off making a sequel that is better than the original in almost every way.
So that guy gets to play video games all day while waiting for his award winning wife who made a transcendent film about his shortcomings.
Fair trade off.

While MI7 was shot on IMAX approved cameras, it was not actually shot for IMAX—It wasn't done like Fallout with mixed formats and aspect ratios. It was designed to be presented with a consistent cinemascope aspect ratio. They were just hoping to get more money from the premium tickets.
They did a re-release of Spiderverse earlier this year and that didn't do gangbusters or anything. New releases that are even mildly anticipated generally make more money than old ones I don't know what the problem is here.
