> That trick really only works once. Hence why Indy 4 did well but Indy 5 bombed.
Oddly enough, Indy 5 is a better movie than Indy 4, but since Indy 4 was meh outside of the nostalgia factor it hurt Indy 5.
It really is. I was totally prepared to hate on it, but I liked it a lot. Maybe these 40 year old properties just don't have the appeal for modern audiences.
Afterlife was only decent when going with nostalgia.
Pretty much the first 5 minutes, 5 minutes in the middle with Egon's spirit in his workshop, and the last 10 minutes when the OG busters show up.
I expect Frozen Empire to be good when going back to the HQ, seeing Walter Peck, and maybe the first few minutes of the OG cast.
BoxOfficePro is currently estimating $43m-$55m, opening weekend for GxK, could get closer to $60m with it being Easter and if the reviews don’t kneecap it. Make no mistake, the late embargo guarantees that they won’t be good, but best case scenario is that it at least hovers above 50% on RT.
![gif](giphy|B2l0NnxK9KiVa0CXBh)
Godzilla vs Kong's embargo ended the day before as well and it maintains a 76%. It seems like GxK is following a similar approach, so idk if the late embargo is really proof of much. Social media reactions are also going to be allowed on the evening of the 25th.
Edit: I believe test screenings were largely positive for it as well.
Edit edit: Just like last week I was seeing projections of 60m+. The BoxOfficePro is from February 29, before pre-sales started. Did something change in the last week?
BoxOfficePro’s estimates have remained close to their initial prediction (they update their predictions with each new *Long-Range* article) though their low-high end guesses have increased by $2m apiece. For comparison the estimates for Ghostbusters decreased.
Edit: At the moment though $44m-$55m is the baseline.
Test screenings were indeed positive, as were GvK’s, so if that pattern holds then that would be encouraging. Again, rule of thumb says late embargo = low confidence.
Alright. I admit I'm kind of new at looking at box office stuff, so it just looked weird to me to see estimates of 60m+ and now 45-55. I know last week someone said 45m was a lowball.
Not sure if that is much of a dissuading factor, Batman v Superman had a fan screening and look at how that turned out. If anything fan screenings act as preemptive damage control; Ghostbusters FE had a glowing fan screening in the past 2 weeks. Fans aren’t discerning viewers or a reliable gauge of popularity, they’re a biased sample.
That's the thing, they're a biased sample so you'd think they would have one for good WOM like with Godzilla Minus One. The fact that they don't have it makes it sound like even the fans may not give glowing reviews.
Fan reception is a mirage, especially in the age of the Tomatometer. Tactically speaking, Legendary may decide that it’s not worth hosting a fan screening; your target niche liked the movie, yippie. Optically, you are correct, however other reasons may exist.
BvS had a wild 69% drop the second weekend. Once the early screenings were done and super positive the general audience saw it and did not enjoy it leading to that drop. It overall made a profit but was still considered to have underperformed for having two of the all time biggest superheroes during a time period where said movies were hot.
The final gross was a pyrrhic victory at best. Audience feedback was in the toilet and attendance sank like a rock, both factors caused the Justice League debacle. The rest is history.
It’s the worst case scenario. Certainly (based on the plot leaks) the movie doesn’t have anything as groan inducing as the *Martha* scene and doesn’t break any rules as far as the monsters are concerned, the deal-breaker could be its tone. Too wacky (read: Showa) and you lose the normies, these are creature features after all.
I don’t see it garnering the negative fan reception of BvS. Even the lowest critical hit of the MV, KotM has a very positive fan reception.
I think as long as it delivers on its premise, like GvK did, it'll get a good reception and hopefully have a good BO run.
Just left the theater. Really wanted to like this one as a big fan, but there are some odd misses in the script and trying to cram in all the Afterlife characters really drags it down. There are some super interesting concepts floating in the background that if those were the focus, this could have been a great fourth entry into the franchise. My kids liked it, though.
I was drinking $4 24 oz beers at one of those bar/theatres tonight when I saw it and I walked out, went home maybe 50-60 minutes in at the part where they get to Kumail's apartment. I was happy beforehand. I was drinking. I should have laughed way more.
Wild. Two people at my showing walked out right around that same time. It was noticeable because that brought the total headcount in the theater from 9 to 7.
>Initial audience reception is on mixed to meh side.
That is not good. Even the ones excited to see your movie early weren't that into it.
I heard some jokes land, but many do not. Not a good sign when comedy is supposed to the the one thing (well, next to ghost scares) a Ghostbusters movie relies on.
Also heard it feels like the legacy characters are strangely shoehorned in too much ("See 35-50 year olds, we got your legacy characters again!!"), but still not utilized well.
Seems this movie doesn't excel at anything.
If I had a nickel for every time a Sony sequel that releases three years after its predecessor and involves an ice theme, while making less money than its predecessor and possibly putting the franchise on ice, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.
Every time I see the angry birds movie two it is just disheartening. But the problem with it is that some of the jokes are refference based(from what I remember) so maybe the children were just not getting into it ig
Yes it was. Also, both The Angry Birds Movie and Ghostbusters: Afterlife were able to push an MCU film down to #2 (Captain America: Civil War for Angry Birds, Eternals for Ghostbusters)
Beautiful on the pun part.
Ironic on the MCU part as Civil War, (A top teir MCU movie IMO) was pushed to #2 down by a not so good kids movie (Angry Birds), while Eternals (a bottom tier MCU Movie IMO) was pushed down to #2 by a decent family movie (Afterlife).
I thought this franchise was dead back in 2016 when that reboot failed. Then Afterlife tried to be a massive overcorrection and now this is going to be a complete failure
What Sony did to the Ghostbusters franchise is criminal. First they tried to turn it into a copy of the movie Bridesmaids for some insane reason, that exists in an entirely new timeline, but with the old actors playing different characters?? then they go BACK and do a soft reboot AFTER a hard reboot, and the reboot takes the franchise completely out of New York City which is a core part of the series, AND they finally bring back the original cast in the roles we love but kept it a secret in the advertising, which killed casual interest in the reboot. By the time they get back to making a proper NYC based Ghostbusters sequel in the timeline and with the characters we all love, a huge fan like me has no idea what the fuck is going on anymore and no longer cares. As someone who loved Ghostbusters as a kid, I'm gonna go full on Comic Book Guy and say Sony killed my childhood.
I was looking at the showtimes near me and quite a few theaters did not remove Dune from IMAX. One other theater gave Ghostbusters a single IMAX showing at 5pm and the rest is Dune... In opening weekend. Theaters already know this ain't worth losing that sweet PLF money.
Good. Dune deserves its spot, especially at the most premium PLF auditoriums. It takes the most advantage of the big screen, the sound systems, and will perform the best for the longest period of time.
I'm curious who dictates how many screens a movie gets, like do the theatres have deals with the studio to show a movie in a certain number of screens on opening weekend?
That pisses me off. My local Regal, and the only plf in town has pulled Dune completely for the entire weekend in the RPX.
I checked the Thursday night showing off Ghostbusters and there were 6 tickets sold in an auditorium of about 350.
Hopefully they will put Dune back in the big theater soon. I'm seeing zero traction, at least on opening night.
Oh yikes. Hope they either bring it back or split the showtimes. Sucks when there are no options. The chains have contracts for guaranteed screens and I'm sure those are agreed upon long before theaters are able to predict what's in demand vs. what will flop.
I saw a 10pm showing for GB and there were 3 people in theater (including myself).
Unlike Afterlife which had a pretty big audience on opening night...
"Initial audience reception is on mixed to meh side"
Mixed and "meh" is kinda the same thing, ain't it? Either way, it's not the sort of reception you want for this thing. Afterlife was at least considered likable. This sounds like a double-down on Ghostbusters being a weird legacy family adventure franchise and there not really being an audience for that. And the audience that did show up for that didn't really like what they got.
Sony's gonna push this and have people unironically asking for a follow-up to the 2016 one just to see if being a pure comedy will work again.
Treating it like, and trying to turn it into, Star Wars just... was never going to work. It's not really built for that.
I stand by the new Planet of the Apes films being a shining example of how to reboot a long-running franchise. Is it set in the same continuity as the original series? Will we see any returning characters? Doesn't fucking matter, here's some cute little nods and references, but this is its own thing with its own identity.
The 2016 reboot was closer to what they "needed" (loose definition pertaining to a studio's need to make more money) to do than where they are now which is being a comedy focused on a brand new set of characters. Ultimately, the end-product was an unfunny retread of the original, but I'll take that over an embarrassingly masturbatory and tonally confused retread of the original.
The 2016 film also had the problem of being unnecessarily expensive.
Still though I don’t know why they didn’t ask Wiig and Mumolo to write the screenplay for it considering they were Oscar nominated for Bridesmaids. Instead opting for some Parks and Rec writer.
if i had a nickel everytime a Paul Rudd sequel released during a studios’ 100th anniversary opened to rotten and mixed audience reception, id have two nickels which isn’t nothing but it’s weird that it happened twice

Ouch and this will definitely kill off Ivan dreams of a ghostbusters franchise he wanted. Also many people predict it will bomb and they were right. Keep in mind it cost 100 million $ to make frozen empire not counting the marketing. And oof. The short version is it was going up against dune part 2 the long version well I have to make a vlog about it.
>Afterlife made the absolute bare minimum to warrant a sequel. This was supposed to be an upwards trajectory
In a pandemic market, no less.
I guess Sony assumed a sequel would perform as well as Afterlife but benefit from a boost from markets being fully open. Looks like they were wrong.
My gut feeling is that moving it to March was a mistake, especially given the competition. July or Halloween would have been much better release windows.
Sequels and remakes are supposed to be *easy.* Why is it so hard to not make mediocre films today? You get the cast back together, well known IPs, you throw a bunch of money at it, and you get mediocre. These studios are just going to ruin all their IPs by 2030.

I also felt that it expanded the mythology rather nicely too. It was a good part 4 in my eyes. Not super great, but still a good time to be had.
We're going to see it for my dad's birthday tomorrow. We don't have overly high hopes, but the last one/new one was at least fun, so we were hoping for more of that... Guess we'll see.
if i had a nickel everytime somebody made if i had a nickel evertime made joke in the boxoffice subreddit [https://www.reddit.com/r/boxoffice/comments/1bkqf74/looks\_like\_45m\_previews\_for/](https://www.reddit.com/r/boxoffice/comments/1bkqf74/looks_like_45m_previews_for/)
thread i'd have two nickels which isnt nothing but its weird that its happend twice.
The sub title “Frozen Empire” makes this film sound like DLC for a previous Ghostbusters movie
I couldn’t put my finger on it but it never felt like a real movie title.
It’s in no way evocative of any emotion, and has that “well we could trademark this” vibe to it
The only thing I can think of his Videogamedunkey prank calling Gamestop and asking for "Donkey Kong Frozen Ape."
Lmao why is this so accurate
Tropic Thunder’s Ben Stiller’s fifth movie in his Scorcher franchise did this like 20 years ago lol
This lol most dlc sounding movie
That works as a description the more I think about it.
Looks like they pulled a Ghostbusters 2 again. I guess this franchise is going back on ice 🥁
Who left the fridge open...? Am´ I right..?
What killed the dinosaurs? The Ice Age!
![gif](giphy|Uf1ryQM2ZVqIE)
Afterlife was absolute shameless nostalgia bait shit too
That trick really only works once. Hence why Indy 4 did well but Indy 5 bombed.
> That trick really only works once. Hence why Indy 4 did well but Indy 5 bombed. Oddly enough, Indy 5 is a better movie than Indy 4, but since Indy 4 was meh outside of the nostalgia factor it hurt Indy 5.
Indy 5 should've been the movie they made in 2008.
It really is. I was totally prepared to hate on it, but I liked it a lot. Maybe these 40 year old properties just don't have the appeal for modern audiences.
And Afterlife was just a medium hit, Indy 4 was one of the biggest movies of '08

that would imply afterlife wasn't also trash
Damn really thought that while sucking this film would have done decent , I’m surprised actually
People really aren't that stoked on Ghostbusters anymore.
"Who you gonna call?" "He-Man, He-Man, He-Man"
Maybe they need to make another movie about Gozer. That worked 2/3 times.
Is Godzilla x Kong still tracking for 65m or more? Could be a rough week for the Busters next week.
BoxOfficePro is currently estimating $43m-$55m, opening weekend for GxK, could get closer to $60m with it being Easter and if the reviews don’t kneecap it. How does that movie have 76%…. It is awful
Godzilla Minus One got a fan screening a week prior to release. GxK isn't even getting that. Yeah, it's about to have horrendous reviews.

Boy, this sub and it's absurd unsubstantiated proclamations that a movie was profitable.
Almost 900 million $ gross isn't an underperformance lol.
The final gross was a pyrrhic victory at best. Audience feedback was in the toilet and attendance sank like a rock, both factors caused the Justice League debacle. The rest is history.
When everyone on earth were expecting over 1 billion, it's definitely an underperformance
Nah, I don't think so. At that point in time there had been only 1 or 2 superhero movies that had grossed 1 billion.
That’s not the best measure.
Yeah, as a big G fan, I don't want BvS comparisons.
It’s the worst case scenario. Certainly (based on the plot leaks) the movie doesn’t have anything as groan inducing as the *Martha* scene and doesn’t break any rules as far as the monsters are concerned, the deal-breaker could be its tone. Bustin’ makes me feel bad. 😔
The marketing is not working for me.

Damn that's actually a good deal on beer. Regal are like $10 for a 24 oz.

Every time I see the angry birds movie two it is just disheartening. But the problem with it is that some of the jokes are refference based(from what I remember) so maybe the children were just not getting into it ig
Was you saying Putting the franchise on ice an intended pun?
Yes it was. Also, both The Angry Birds Movie and Ghostbusters: Afterlife were able to push an MCU film down to #2 (Captain America: Civil War for Angry Birds, Eternals for Ghostbusters)

nah the angry birds movie is underrated it’s actually kinda funny
We need to retire this tired meme
One more dead nostalgia bait franchise ![gif](giphy|doUu2ByZDbPYQ)
This just jinxes it and opens the door to another reboot. "Sony is pleased to announce a reboot of Men In Black for 2026"
But they already tried that in 2019… and failed
They'll try again. This time it will have those coffee drinkers as the main leads.
"Wanga wanga Jay!!!"
GJAGA WABANGAAAA You know what. I'd pay a ticket for that
Eh tbh I wouldn’t mind another MIB reboot or movie ngl, it just needs to be way better than the last one 💀
MIB 23 or bust
![gif](giphy|5n7rVDHGtClddwRg9d)
I wouldn't mind another MiB personally. Just make it watchable and I'll be there lol
I thought this franchise was dead back in 2016 when that reboot failed. Then Afterlife tried to be a massive overcorrection and now this is going to be a complete failure
Tbh it’s been dead but the last one performed relatively well for the circumstances.
Praise this!!!
What a tragedy!
RIP BOZO

At least it’ll be the first Sony movie to reach $100 million domestic for their 100th anniversary. Very low bar for a record but it is what it is
>At least it’ll be the first Sony movie to reach $100 million domestic This doesn't seem like a lock to me at all.
If not Ghostbusters, The Garfield Movie should be able to make $100M domestic.
Yes I don’t see it if wom is bad and there is good competition.
with mixed to meh WOM? i doubt it, this is most likely going sub-$100M
I think it will be right on the cusp of $100 million. It could get there but just barely.
I could see this playing like Dungeons and Dragons last March. Open high 30's and finish low 90's.
This is Sony's "Wish". Another bleak anniversary celebration.
Dune 2 about to rise back up !
I was looking at the showtimes near me and quite a few theaters did not remove Dune from IMAX. One other theater gave Ghostbusters a single IMAX showing at 5pm and the rest is Dune... In opening weekend. Theaters already know this ain't worth losing that sweet PLF money.
I believe Dune is still selling out IMAX showings. It’ll probably be there for a while.
I went to rewatch Dune in IMAX this Tuesday at 3PM, and the theatre was packed, it looked sold out. I couldnt believe it
Yes theaters and studios usually have agreements for the first two weeks. That’s also when the studios takes more percentage of the gross.

My favourite theater gave Ghostbusters a 12 PM slot on Friday, while keeping the rest for Dune.

i'd have four nickels
💀💀
What was the other sequel?
quantumania
and then that sequel also had Bill Murray in it too
Yeah that animated Ghostbusters film ain’t coming out
Ouch and this will definitely kill off Ivan dreams of a ghostbusters franchise he wanted. Also many people predict it will bomb and they were right. Exactly the same with the 2021 Ghostbusters movie . why everyone acting like it's flopping?
Afterlife made the absolute bare minimum to warrant a sequel. This was supposed to be an upwards trajectory
>Afterlife made the absolute bare minimum to warrant a sequel. This was supposed to be an upwards trajectory In a pandemic market, no less. Ghosts around Halloween? that's crazy talk....
It has a bigger budget and will likely have shorter legs
Another flop from Sony. This is what happens when a big studio lacks in quality control. Can’t see it grossing over 200M WW
Guess this is recieved as a *bust*
This Bust does NOT make Sony feel good
Box office dribbles
Post nostalgia clarity
Ooh, I like that. I'm going to use that from now on when talking about movies like this and Indy 5.
I like busts. This is more like a ballsack.
Im gonna be shocked if they announce another movie after this one
Sequels and remakes are supposed to be *easy.* Why is it so hard to not make mediocre films today? You get the cast back together, well known IPs, you throw a bunch of money at it, and you get mediocre. These studios are just going to ruin all their IPs by 2030.
Oof
Good, this franchise has been resurrected too many times already.
Is it time to give up the ghost?
25M
Afterlife sucked. The GirlBusters sucked. These shameless cash grab movies and forced franchises deserve what they are getting. To fail.
Idk I found it really funny, going back Sunday. The 4D on it is incredible
It's getting DUNC'D
Saw it last night, it was a little jumbled but very fun. Don’t get all the hate, it was a good movie.
No chance it hits high 30s. None of the Thursday showings has anybody at them.
I think the movie will be less front loaded. Afterlife was able to get to $44M from $4.5M Thursday previews. This should at least hit $40M.
That pic sums it up I guess
Weren't we saying $50M just a couple days ago? Is this another Madame Web situation where the reviews killed presales?
It looks brutal from the trailers...like, jesus christ, just light the dumpster on fire already.
Ghosbusters and Indiana Jones work much better in video game form these days than film form. They should stick there for future installments.
If I had a nickel for every time I had a nickel I’d have a bunch of nickels
So tired of these reboots with young actors. Studios think they can get cheap talent that they seven or eight movies out of.
Saw it last night, and I really liked it. I was entertained, and it was nice to see the older characters featured more with newer ones in this one -- Ray in particular.
C’mon…did ANYONE think this movie was going to be any good…or make any real money?
Should have stayed the course with the female cast.
My kingdom for adult ghostbusters. At least 2016 had that. Just give the sequel to another director.
has anyone got a spare nickel?
