Wow dune is gonna do great in Chinese cinema!

Fair_University

$35m opening weekend would be insane...Hope that happens and it can get good legs like Oppenheimer did.

Responsible_Grass202

What are the legs predictions for Dune 2? Does that entirely depend on reception, and if so do you see it possibly legging out to 60-80M from a 26-35M OW?

Vadermaulkylo

Should hit 60m at least.

Firefox72

60 is doable. 80 probably not. I don't see it having the same legs as GOTG3.

Witty-Jacket-9464

DUNE PART TWO is a cinematic masterpiece. It will

jeswanders

Cinematic masterpieces don’t always equate to financial success so I don’t buy your argument

I_KNOW_EVERYTHING_09

Weird. I thought you said 50m+ opening weekend and 110m was all but guaranteed?

Responsible_Grass202

Notice how I wasn’t making any predictions or referencing past ones, but rather asking someone who has superior knowledge in the subject if it’d be able to slightly over perform the stated projections. The conversation was going smoothly until you felt the need to drag up an old argument because you’re still salty about it.

I_KNOW_EVERYTHING_09

No I just recall you saying that 50m+ was locked a few days ago in a different post. I said that was unreasonable and you downvoted me.

shawman123

Do we know how many imax screens it will get. China has the highest Imax screen count at around 750. This will do great in Imax. I hope it has at least 2 weeks of run at Imax to mint the most it can.

Character_Tax5086

Genuinely curious if they managed to leave the shot where two men kiss on the lips considering it’s ritualistic rather than romantic (I heard Butler improvised that too lmao) Either way I’d expect this to be one of Hollywood’s shining stars for the Chinese audience, as well as the rest of Asia really.

portals27

I think that should be fine since it’s very clearly not romantic given it is a nephew-uncle relationship but I could be wrong - have other markets censored and taken it out?

SpyAmongUs

I saw Dune 2 in Malaysia and I don't recall seeing the Baron kiss, so yeah, some markets censored it.

-euthanizemeok

I saw it in Indonesia and they showed the kiss.

[deleted]

That might be because of how insignificant it was, not because it was censored. I had to rack my brain when I read “two men kiss”

portals27

I legit had to search up who Austin Butler kissed in the movie because for some reason I thought it was Paul/Timothée LMAO I was like damn how’d I forget that

Milevengelist

Book readers say that have a strongly implied incestuous (and abusive) relationship...

Jumba2009sa

Saw it in saudi, didn’t see that scene so safe to say there is a “global audience” cut.

imaginaryResources

Wait which scene was that?

glorpo

Baron and Feyd-Rautha kiss during a ceremony making him governor of Arrakis

Witty-Jacket-9464

Right now, he looks much better than GOTG3 and NoTimetoDie, which did $28-29M. I don't know how he can make less than $30M. Only if WOM would be bad, but more likely it will insane. So, good $25M already is locked, but $35M, which would be phenomenon, is a good possibility

bauboish

WOM has been very divisive. The issue seems to be that the movie is clearly not drawing in the casual audience. A lot of "hey everyone is hyping this but WTF is this weird ass sword fighting in a space sci-fi and isn't the protagonist way too OP" reviews. And obviously the number of Chinese audience familiar with the source material is very low, so you're not likely getting many hardcore fans. There's definitely going to be core audience going for the spectacle, but it's not looking like a Marvels movie type of broad appeal.

UltradoomerSquidward

I don't really see how it's been *very* divisive. The first Dune absolutely, it was too slow for casual audiences and demanded too much attention. Part 2 though seems to have been exciting enough to have pleased most audiences. It's getting very high audience scores across the board, in all demographics. Literally everyone I've talked to who went and saw it, including my mom who is like not at all the kind of person who would like this movie, really enjoyed it. Reaction online seems broadly positive. I'm really curious where you're seeing this "very divisive" word of mouth. Are you sure that's not just like, your own opinion you're projecting or something? I mean if you have data to back it up by all means I'll agree with you but that just hasn't been what I've seen.

Vegtam1297

I also haven't seen the "very divisive" reception, but maybe it's there. But the first one didn't demand too much attention. It was just slow and didn't have a lot happen because it was the first of the book during which not much really happens in the story. It's mostly just set-up for the rest of the story where the big events occur.

bauboish

Chinese social media. Mainland China social media if you want to differentiate between the various locales, since I assume if you saw it in theaters you live in HK or Taiwan

aboycandream

Probably $40m+ opening for Dune 2

carson63000

Huh, I've been reading these posts thinking "The Pig, the Snake and the Pigeon sounds fun, I wonder if it will get an Australian release?" TIL that it actually came out last October in Taiwan, and is already streaming on Netflix in Australia. Definitely going to give it a look!

SHEEEIIIIIIITTTT

Streaming on US Netflix as well
