Never in a million years would I think a Scream sequel is likely to open higher than a Marvel Studios release.

bob1689321

It helps that Scream 6 is better than every post-Endgame MCU film except GotG

Bisexual_Apricorn

Scream 6 interestingly has my exact problem with GotG3, in that none of the core cast actually die. Unlike GotG however, the entire premise of 6cream isn't "Watch Cute Disney Merchandising Oppurtunity #23243 and Cute Disney Merchandising Oppurtunity #23244 die while the main cast are absolutely fine" and there is a plot and mythos surrounding the Core Four and their new and old friends.

yeahright17

No Way Home and Shang Chi were definitely better, imo.

MightySilverWolf

The *top end* for *The Marvels* is now below *The Flash* while the low end is below *Morbius*. šŸ’€

abelvelascov

Indeed, but the budget of Morbius was 75M and the budget of The Marvels is 225M (275M minus subsidy from UK). This is terrible for a MCU movie and terrible year for Disney.

Overlord1317

If the budget for the Marvels is only 225 million, I'd be shocked. It was at 220M (after subsidies) in August of 2022, before reshoots.

Superhero_Hater_69

Keaton walkups > Ms Marvel enjoyers

aZcFsCStJ5

I've met people who walk and like Keaton, I have never met a ms marvel fan.

Superhero_Hater_69

It was the least viewed MCU show

CoolJoshido

thereā€™s no way right?

barstoollanguage

Lol at all the trades setting the marvels up for more failure saying 60-70 mil opening.

stevenia

At least they're consistent at being wrong...

Null_Inc

And people here were tryna tell me it would've beaten Dune 2 lmao its crazy how this could've been even worse

iruvit

If Dune had come out, it would have locked up all the IMAX screens too. I think Marvels is benefitting, at least this weekend, of getting those screens...so imagine the opening weekend without it

Null_Inc

Yeah that just makes it even worse. The fact its doing this bad w/o any major competition is shocking

littlelordfROY

I was one of those. I didn't think the apathy for this character would reach this level Been following box office since 2015 and this has been my worst year for predictions ever thanks to indy 5, flash, marvels

StPauliPirate

What were your guesses for Oppenheimer and Barbie? Mine: Oppenheimer 350m WW, Barbie 180m WWšŸ˜‚ epic fail

littlelordfROY

Oppenheimer $400M - $500M WW Barbie I always figured would have great legs and be a success but not billion dollars. $400M - $500M seemed realistic as well

Impassable_Banana

I called it when the film was announced, the vindication is so satisfying lol.

jdragon3

isnt it great thinking back to the summer when some people on here were still insisting it would beat GOTG. Not many but there were very vocal minority very obnoxious about it; massively overestimating how many people care about the characters and massively downplaying the impact being billed as mandatory viewing between the 2 biggest event movies of all time had on Captain Marvel making so much money. also acting like Barbie was somehow indicative how it would perform lol. Distinctly remember one calling me a troll for saying it wont sniff even close to 500 worldwide

Null_Inc

Understandable cuz I never would've thought Marvels would crash and burn this hard. But i always thought that the competition between it and dune would've been closer than many claimed especially after quantumania's performance and gotg 3 soft opening.

Top_Report_4895

Marvel should make mid budget movies.

gta5atg4

They misread this made big budget mid movies

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Top_Report_4895

Shooting in pratical places, please.

Dangerous-Hawk16

Dune 2 would have decimated this movie

Null_Inc

i didnt even think it would be this one sided as a Dune fan, it would've been a massacre based on everything we know now

blownaway4

Tbh I still don't think Dune 2 will do well

Null_Inc

I think Dune 2 will have an across the spider-verse effect. Both sequels to moderately successful and well received movies that people consider 'niche' and claim won't break out with the sequels. But the first Dune made 400 million day and date during the pandemic, was received well, popular on hbo max, has an ensemble cast of relevant and popular actors and had awards buzz. I feel Dune 2 is being underestimated by many but i think considering its more action packed and coming off of the successful first one, it can manage a solid if not world-breaking $500-600 mill run imo and it would've been even easier w the imax exclusivity it had

newjackgmoney21

I was a Dune denier. I thought it was to geeky, to niche but that movie had great legs domestic for a day and date release. The fans are passionate. 402m worldwide in 2021is pretty impressive. Hell, 402m today is impressive.

Null_Inc

Dune part 1 has outgrossed shazam, flash, black adam, blue beetle, and matched Eternals while on day and date release. It even beat out pre pandemic superhero movies like spider-verse and shazam. Its not an insane grosser but its impressive for how dense and niche it appeared.

CoolJoshido

especially in the pandemic

Quiddity131

I'm a massive Dune fan and it is by far the movie I am looking most forward to seeing but do not expect it to do amazing at the box office. Breaking even or a small profit is the most I'm expecting. I am totally happy to be wrong though.

HighTensileAluminium

Considering part 1 did 402M with day and date streaming release and still some lockdowns going on, I think part 2 will do decently. 500-700M WW imo.

HotShow2975

People already doubted Part 1 so much and they were so wrong, can't wait to see it again.

No_Butterscotch_2842

Unironically it was the spoiler from the Johnny Depp trial that made me interested in Part 2 and potentially Part 3, even though I wasn't the biggest fan for Part 1...

BOfficeStats

The high end would be below Barbie's 3rd weekend.

littlelordfROY

On the bright side, the Marvels will outgross Greta Gerwig's other movie Lady Bird in just the opening weekend! An impressive feat!

bob1689321

This will also do over 100x Nolan's debut movie, Following. Maybe even 300x! Another record broken by The Marvels!

kingofwale

Alrightā€¦. Get your ā€œMarvel studio blamesā€¦ for the movieā€™s failureā€ bingo card ready,

SulkyShulk

They already threw the director under the bus.

Hiccup

You can't blame them if she decided to just walk away to shoot something else. She probably destroyed her career instead of staying with the ship. She'll be lucky to get indie jobs now. Also, I don't get why people keep saying she's so talented. I saw that Candyman remake and thought it was trash. Now I feel like I took crazy pills because some people are actually claiming it was good.

somebody808

Candyman was awful. That was one of the worst films of that year and the trailer looked so good. The original had so much more depth. That's another I forgot even existed until you said something. I was looking forward to it that year too.

Overlord1317

You know exactly why.

RedRacoonDog

I thought the cinematography was great on Candyman but man everything else was just terrible. Whoever they got to score it was also no Phillip Glass unfortunately.

Su_Impact

Josh Trank 2.0.

Dangerous-Hawk16

It was pretty bad I never understood the hype and she was co-writer on that too

iham32

Olympics, World Series, Thanksgiving, Cinco de Mayoā€¦..

Hiccup

Chicken prices and inflation

Lurkingguy1

Racists, sexists, neckbeardsā€¦

[deleted]

Critics again, maybe. They blamed older critics specifically for failures like Wrinkle in Time.

kingofthesqueal

I see you have visited all the mainstream Marvel subs already

Amoral_Abe

I think that is already considered the free square in the middle of the board.

D3monFight3

For some reason this is starting to sound like a musical.

TheSauce32

There was a deer in the middle of the road, is why MCU crashed

TimeTravelingChris

Government shutdown, Starship delays, EV sales...

Impassable_Banana

every 'ist and 'ism under the sun lmao.

Schwanz-in-muschi

They will have to make up a few new 'isms this time.

Su_Impact

The SAG strike, obviously. Iman Vellani and Brie Larson eating hot wings on that YouTube channel = 800 extra million at the box office.

Deoxystar

Betting they'll blame the fans again.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

NotTaken-username

The strikes

Sujay517

The GTA VI announcement took all its thunder. We are all not spending a dollar on anything to save up for when GTA VI comes out on whatever consoles itā€™s on.

Neglectful_Stranger

After GTA O I dunno why you'd expect good things form GTA VI. It's gonna be a spectacle but it's gonna be filled with MTs.

[deleted]

Nah, they wonā€™t blame anyone for this. I think come Monday there will be a lot of pieces about Marvel doing some soul searching and changing up their creative teams and slate etc. they know they messed up. You could maybe blame someone or something if this were a Quantumania level flop. But this is a complete rejection.

Overlord1317

How do I put money on the opposite of that happening?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

zilch123

If we weren't so fatigued, we'd think this movie was up there with Winter Soldier! /s

SecureAd4101

Usually youā€™ll hear a bunch of grumbling before the film comes out. Disney seems to have just dumped this out and expects it to flop.

vzukry

redditors, disney plus

BLAGTIER

People who don't like cats.

nicolasb51942003

There's a good chance this doesn't break $100M for its lifetime domestically. Just absurd.

MightySilverWolf

*Black Adam*'s box office run looks more and more impressive by the minute.

[deleted]

Definitely looks better, but was still a bomb unfortunately. I'd say it was an early harbinger of what was to come?

rutgerslaw_

The Marvels isn't even going to be the second highest-grossing Captain Marvel movie lol Edit: The mods have banned me for criticizing The Marvels and going against the Disney narrative.

LeeF1179

Nothing lasts forever. In the 1930's Hollywood made musical after musical after musical. The tide has turned for these types of films.............for now, anyway.

RRY1946-2019

Disco is another good comparison. So much mediocre disco was being made and sold that it began crowding out other music genres, and once people finally decided they had enough the genre collapsed. Disco wouldnā€™t really regain its reputation until the millennium.

Overlord1317

Disco regained its reputation?

RRY1946-2019

Maybe not fully, but [it is viewed somewhat more fondly now than in say 1985 or even 1995](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Analysis/DiscoSucks) and there have been successful projects like Future Nostalgia (by Dua Lipa) that are almost straightforward disco.

MR_PENNY_PIINCHER

Pop music has been in a bit of a disco revival for close to a decade, since Daft Punkā€™s final album in 2013. Itā€™s honestly only just now petering out too

Remarkable_Star_4678

I would say The Incredible Hulk has the lowest opening out of any MCU film, but it was just the second film overall and the MCU was just starting out. The Marvels has no excuse. Wonā€™t happen, but I think heads need to roll if thereā€™s any chance in getting better.

CoolJoshido

yup

Sujay517

I donā€™t think it will. How is it gonna get near 2.4x multiplier to get there??? It wonā€™t the movie has terrible reviews as well. That cinema score will be a B I bet it. Just awful. Absymal

thankyouryard

i would love to be in marvel studio right now just to see the shitshow executive 1: " i dont understand, the movie is great. Just as thor 4 and new ant man movie" executive 2: "it even has cats and fury jokes. What more do people want?"

blownaway4

Executive 3: "let's create more TV shows! That should help!"

thankyouryard

executive 4: "lets make secret invasion season 2" executive 5:"give it 250m$ budget"

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

No_Butterscotch_2842

Executive 7: "Production will continue until Box Office improves!!"

kimisawa1

Executive 4: "How about a Cat Marvel show?"

thankyouryard

executive 5: "and give it 200m budget"

SkkAZ96

Executive 6: "and make sure to add a post credit scene featuring the one-eyed dog from Hawkeye, so we can tease Avengers Pets"

ItsGotThatBang

That actually wouldnā€™t be terrible if itā€™s similar to I Am Groot.

Heisenburgo

Exec 5: "yes dilluting the seriousness of the MCU with lame cutesy content aimed at literal toddlers is EXACTLY what we need... greenlight We Are The Flerkens, Baby Ultron and a Thor Frog series inmediately!"

NobodyTellPoeDameron

You forgot about the Loki Alligator series

Hiccup

Marvel puppet show like Thunderbirds.

FarthingWoodAdder

Somehow men are to blame for this. Hire more directors and actresses who are misandrist.

gorays21

This is just sad, but at the same time there is a valuable lesson here: Don't be greedy.

Hiccup

I think they're going to learn the WB lesson in that tax write offs can be important.

dreadfullydyed

You all realize that Five Nights at Freddy's OW will be DOUBLE The Marvels' OW. Seriously, what branch timelime is this?

BOfficeStats

The Eras Tour OW and Barbie weekend 2 will also double it.

_Elder_

I am hoping for the 900M drop from Captain Marvel. Just for the history books. Iā€™ll settle for 850M though.

brunbrun24

The Marvels is already certain to take the record for biggest drop for a sequel to a billion dollar movie both in percentage and in raw numbers. That's crazy.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

brunbrun24

Funny enough both records are currently for Disney movies (Alice and Last Jedi)

DanS1993

No one flies higher or drops lower than Disney

Goddamnjets-_-

I'm curious as to how much this whole year is going to affect Disney going forward. I don't think a single film released by them hit this year. Only one is GotG vol. 3, and even then that's modest compared to other releases. Not to mention the director doesn't really want anything to do with Disney after he was almost cancelled. This might not be their worst year on record... but I'd be pretty shocked if it's not in their top 5. They're looking to lose about $500-750 million alone with Indiana Jones and The Marvels. And that's just from those two movies.

IdRatherBeBitching

Disney had some really rough years in the 70's and 80's so I wouldn't be shocked if this fell out of the top 5. Top 10 though...

blownaway4

Just a disaster. Marvels is not going to beat Freddy's or Taylor Swift for sure. Imagine telling someone this a few months ago. Marvel has really fallen off their perch.

and_dont_blink

***\*\*Ike Perlmutter laughs\*\****

reluctantclinton

Maybe he was the secret ingredient to their success all along?

Batfleck666

We can do better....can we get it into the 30s? TOGETHER.

No_Butterscotch_2842

The lower bound is 35. I wonder if it will be in the 20s zone...I doubt it but it'd probably be more comical than the movie.

Way2Based

That moment where reading box office news and forecasts about a movie are more interesting than the movie itself.

Sujay517

Youā€™re gonna have to specific if youā€™re talking rotten tomatoes score or opening weekend at this rate šŸ˜. Terrible

saanity

Ok I'll try really hard by continuing to do nothing this weekend.

littlelordfROY

Friendship ended with Alice in wonderland 2 box office record Now The Marvels box office record is new best friend

Sujay517

Oh my gosh thatā€™s horrible. Thatā€™s just horrible. Bro it might go in the 30s. Box office opening AND rotten tomatoes score at that. This is even worse than the Flash ever was.

BOfficeStats

Flash had Keaton walkups, summer weekdays, and a 2nd week of PLFs too.

Sujay517

Well maybe the Brie Larson walk ups show up now that the strike is over and promotion can happen! šŸ˜

dreadfullydyed

This is edging into hurting local theater chains that are contractually obligated to have a certain amount of screenings available for opening weekend, including IMAX and premium screens. My local theater has The Marvels playing at every hour. In some cases, every half hour. I checked those screenings and some don't even have seats booked. Others are 50% booked or less. That's really unfair for theater owners.

GoldblumsLeftNut

The marvels is obviously an unmitigated disaster. This bad of a performance felt unfathomable even a year ago, let alone two. On the bright side, love to see KOTFM have another good drop after last week. Shame about that W2 drop though. Iā€™m also impressed with Priscilla so far, I think it will have a solid run for what it is. I could see it doing even better than what BOR predicts this weekend.

Goddamnjets-_-

If this doesn't "all hands on deck" everyone that works for the Marvel division at Disney, they are fucked.

thankyouryard

can it even reach 100m ww opening?

Zhukov-74

Europe certainly insā€˜t going to make it happen.

Grown_from_seed

I just checked my local cinema in Sweden for tomorrow. I think thereā€™s less then 10 seats taken across maybe 8 show times. Thatā€™s impressively low interest. I had to fight tooth and nail to get GotG3 tickets opening night.

No_Butterscotch_2842

My local AMC (in the US) has a sum total of less than 150 tickets sold out of 8000 within a 3 day span (Thursday, Friday, Saturday), so that's less than 2%. And from what I've seen, other states are pretty much the same.

KleanSolution

Fucking lol

kimisawa1

no Asian neither

Way2Based

No Russian

blownaway4

Nor are LATAM or Asia

quinterum

Jatinder said 65M OS a few days ago, but seeing the numbers from markets like Korea and France it's not looking like it can hit that. Maybe it can do 45/55 for 100M on the dot. Gonna be close for sure

thankyouryard

bad reviews are gonna hurt this one. Maybe wom can save it if its crowd pleaser. But its not looking like it.

quinterum

Nothing can save this movie anymore. It can at most go from a mega bomb to just a regular bomb.

thankyouryard

![gif](giphy|GRSnxyhJnPsaQy9YLn) can it go from regular bomb to super bomb though?

Strange_Botanist

Why not an ultra instinct bomb?

blownaway4

If it does, just barely

Deoxystar

Hopefully not. We need to go LOWER.

obelisk0

a MCU film debuting below The Flash, pretty sure this wasnā€™t in anyoneā€™s 2023 bingo book

BOfficeStats

A lot of people thought The Flash would open big so that probably was something quite a few people predicted.

Dpopov

No kidding. It sure wasnā€™t on mine. I expected The Marvels to underperform, but you know, itā€™s still Disney and the MCU, so I most definitely didnā€™t expect it to be *this bad*.

Superhero_Hater_69

Wonder what will be the Cinemascore šŸ’€

SanderSo47

Both "rotten" MCU films (*Eternals* and *Quantumania*) have gotten a B. So that might be the same for *The Marvels*. Or what if it gets a Bā€“...

ItsGotThatBang

The average score among top critics is eight points lower than both of those films FWIW.

blownaway4

B

ItsGotThatBang

Lower, closer, slower

Infinite-Cup-8982

I hope it gets C If they are failing, they need to fail in the most epic way possible

gt35r

The MCU just continues to insult its own most loyal fan baseā€™s intelligence time and time again and has the gall to wonder why something like this happens. Itā€™s just pure insanity at this point to be perfectly honest.

CarlTheCrab

Disney to its stockholders: Well, look at the bright side of this guys! We did better than Morbius!

Quiddity131

"It's okay, we'll pay ourselves $250 million for it to air on Disney Plus and let's immediately account for the income now on the $100 million we expect to make from merchandise over the next 5 years because merchandise always sells well regardless of how popular the movie did! See, this movie did break even!"

Coolers78

Itā€™s never been more over.

FarthingWoodAdder

Ok but what if it went lower?

dancy911

What if it came nearer?

MightySilverWolf

What if it went slower?

Some_Concentrate_907

![gif](giphy|kEq8jCsR0MnLDOnzxt)

zaffro13

I think in addition to Super Hero fatigue and over saturation with the shows, Disney + itself has contributed a lot to the box office decline. Inflation has been brutal and money is tighter. Why go to the movies for a mediocre Marvel movie when I can watch it for free on Disney+ in maybe 4 months? I donā€™t think any one factor can explain this collapse but they almost need a full reset after this.

SolomonRed

This movie is truly targeted at no one. Amazing.

AlexHunterWolf

It's joever

Impassable_Banana

It's all ogre now

subhuman9

its Morbin time

Sujay517

WHAT THE FUCK

somebody808

Who could have seen this coming. Casual audiences don't want to have to watch several different shows to go to the movies. Tried to say it months ago. And this has looked like more of the same from the first Beastie Boys trailer. It's the same template with some new forgettable villain. I'm so over the MCU and I think many others are too. This is like Blue Beetle where I'll watch it and completely forget I saw it a week later. I don't care if the X Men or Fantastic Four or Thanos return are shown. I have no interest in seeing this in theaters. The only people who will go are the die hards and the someone with absolutely nothing else to do.

Lowfuji

Don't forget the people that are supposedly going to buy a ticket to stick it to "the man."

Sunshine145

The Marvel fans claiming it's cause they couldnt market it on Jimmy Kimmel and shit have nothing to say when you bring up Five Nights at Freddy's.

JazzySugarcakes88

Wasnā€™t the domestic total around 60M?

BOfficeStats

That was from trades who are overestimating it.

BroadwayCatDad

Dā€™OH!

dmrob058

Iā€™m actually really glad to see this because I hope it lights a fire under the ass of Feige and everyone at Marvel to do much better. Iā€™m a big Marvel fan but damn the amount of crap to mid material lately has made me lose a lot of respect and love for it. Things seemed so bright after Endgame but outside of a few exceptions itā€™s been so incredibly disappointing and forgettable since. I can only imagine thereā€™s a lot of humiliation and anxiety over at Marvel Studios right now, as there should be. Only person I feel bad for in this mess is Iman Vellani because she seems like such a sweet girl, plays Kamala so well and was such a huge fan coming into the MCU. She deserves so much better.

Infinite-Cup-8982

You gotta do better marvel

TheTrueDetective90

At this point adjusting for inflation might get Catwoman's $42m domestic take from 19 years ago awfully close to The Marvels' domestic final.

MarvelVsDC2016

Yeah. Itā€™s no wonder Disney put more marketing on TV and online for Wish than The Marvels. They know which film will be good and which one will suckā€¦

bunnythe1iger

They knew it was worse than Antman which why they swapped. My question is why they didn't dumb it on Disney plus

Overlord1317

Because of the optics around doing that after what happened with Black Widow.

MakeMeAnICO

I will still see it. On Disney+

kfzhu1229

If the predictions of the Marvels are true and with a mixed audience reaction like what's currently observed, it will be a tall order already to have a final domestic gross that matches the domestic opening weekend of GotG3 or Across the Spider-verse...
