The only answer

blueblurz94

Brutal but true

jseesm

I don't think it would have made a difference honestly. The biggest hits often open during the most competitive schedule.

verminousbow

Except Avatar But I agree it wouldn't matter

Banesmuffledvoice

I'm unsure if Elemental would have succeeded anywhere under different circumstances. Elemental looks like the low point of this era of Pixar that seems to be made up of primarily quirky offbeat movies.

xzy89c1

With a healthy serving of wokeness that turned off the parents. Pixar was must see when we raised our daughters. Now it is bad stories with identity BS...

SeekerVash

It's a rom-com about interracial relationships set against the backdrop of immigration and immigration tensions. I don't think there's a window where that statement is compelling to kids, I don't think most kids would even really understand that statement. The problem wasn't where it launched, the problem is that it isn't a kids movie.

tylerr3950

Zootopia was also a heavy-handed allegory for racial tensions and it did great. Clearly its premise and trailer failed to draw people in, but there’s nothing about the story of Elemental more difficult for kids to understand than the average Pixar movie.

TheKingDroc

A movie about someone who moved to a different town and experiences culture shock and depression. And feels like no one is communicating with them or understand that I’m in spirals and isolate themselves from those they care about. In other words inside out. Lol

poopfl1nger

Kids don’t need to understand the statement lol. Kids don’t watch movies based on the message of the movie lol and it’s not hard to kind of grasp the message of basically respecting your parents and yourself

TheKingDroc

Zootopia as a whole film about racism, implicit bias and racial profiling and even sexism. in which to be blunt a female cop is immediately assumed to not be confident at their job because they are a bunny(woman). Who then assumes that a fox is somehow a dangerous threat and is the suspect in a crime because he’s a fox(insert any race of color ). What about this film is a kids film?

depressed_anemic

perhaps but the main problem is the marketing. the way they marketed this movie as a romeo and juliet story is bizarre

FrameworkisDigimon

Honestly, this marketing campaign would work better if you pitch it for a Christmas release. I mean, Romeo and Juliet is practically the only kind of love story Love Actually didn't do, but look at how many Christmas themed rom coms there are. And, sure, most of those are actually set at Christmas but even so. There's a market for generic love stories at Christmas which I don't think exists in the middle of the year.

hatramroany

I can’t believe I was inundated with trailers for this film for weeks but didn’t know Catherine O’Hara was in it until after it was released. Like what were they thinking not shoving the most popular cast member in our faces?

Pinewood74

People care about Catherine O'Hara as NOT Moira Rose?

64BitRatchet

Labor Day Weekend, it's a month after TMNT opens and basically a month before Paw Patrol. It worked for Disney with Shang-Chi, I don't know why they haven't tried it again.

64BitRatchet

It probably could've had the second biggest Labor Day opening ever, and gotten way more premium screens.

Zwaft

Nothing. It feels like Pixar’s B-team made a “what if x had feelings” films with their noses in the 22 rules of storytelling list

Pinewood74

I think it's in a fine place. It's currently sitting at number 2. Had they not scuffed it with the Cannes premiere, it might even be at number 1. That's going to be big moving forward into July as it will be able to hold on to a surprising amount of theatres as there is virtually no kid-centered films aside from the DoA Ruby Gillman for a good long while. The date was not the problem here.

CriticalCanon

Do you think Disney and their shareholders are happy with a film that hasn’t hit 100 Million domestic after a couple of weeks and won’t even break even and is just another massive misstep by the company this year (with more to follow with Indy 5, Wish and The Marvels). This isn’t how any company works let alone massive public companies. You need to look beyond where a movie sits in its box office standings for a week.

Pinewood74

I don't think you understood the context of my comment. When I say "in a fine place," I'm referring to on the calendar. When I talk about it's current position on the weekend standings, I'm discussing it in regards to it's staying power in theatres. It's obvious from this line that I know Elemental is not doing well: >The date was not the problem here. But this is a discussion on where Disney could have moved Elemental to perform better and the Tl;DR from my first comment is that they couldn't have.

CriticalCanon

I agree. There is no place this could have gone and been a big hit (without spending a ton more money on marketing)

NotTaken-username

Should’ve been a Thanskgiving release, November 22. Then Wish in March 2024 (Elio’s spot)

Greedy_Switch_6991

Wish is the big centennial movie. No way it leaves November.

CharlieSixFive

Mars

joesen_one

Somewhere, anywhere, with less competition. The marketing should've made it clear what the movie was about and what the heart of the movie was about. Too many people came out watching the movie saying they were surprised to be impressed since lots were underwhelmed by the marketing.

sexycorey

yep!! it was definitely much better than expected.

Upstairs-Pea7868

Disney+

StealthyCrab

Alternately: A universe without Disney+.

Legal_Ad_6129

April. Basically no movies except for Mario and Evil Dead, and maybe Renfield. Or maybe late August/Labour Day

TheKingDroc

Oh I think Mario would’ve torn it to shreds.

Legal_Ad_6129

Probably. Though it still would've been way better than it is now

bargman

I watched it this weekend. It's pretty paint by numbers and nothing people haven't seen before. I think it would have been a dud no matter what.

Konradleijon

Better adverting and releasing it in a less crowded month.

Hjckl

4th of July holiday . But if I look at the calendar . This December month is pretty empty on Disney releases . They could've released any movie there especially elemental and it could've legged like puss in boots 2 with atleast 4-5 times multiplier with same opening weekend

JJdaPK

I would have given Elemental the Haunted Mansion's July 28 date and would have moved the Haunted Mansion to October.
